RESTRUCTRING AT THE AUTHORITY

With the East Third Street Gateway Project underway and the Levee recertification in Lycoming County on the horizon, the Williamsport Municpal Water and Sanitary Authority has restructured it’s engineering department.  Following a review of staffing and production needs by the current administrative and consulting engineer, HRG it was determined that the Authority needs a full-time director of engineering.  While the search is on, HRG will continue as the program manager.  Officials with the Authority say the restructuring is needed as well due to the storm water management transfer from the city.

VOTE EXPECTED TO ELMINATE STAFF POSITION

Lycoming County Commissioners are expected to vote later this week to eliminate a staff position within the county in which the most recent person in that position was paid a yearly salary of $40,000 dollars.  Due to changes that the way the county collection’s office does business, Commissioners will vote whether or not to eliminate the enforcement officer position which could bring with it a salary anywhere from $35,000 to $50,000 yearly.  Due to a court decision, the position which would handle cost and fines payments and bench warrants for those who are unpaid has been rendered just about useless.

TWO INJURED IN NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY CRASH

Two persons were taken to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville for serious injuries following a crash on Route 54 in Elysburg in Northumberland County yesterday. The crash happened just before 9am as Rose Springer of Bloomsburg went to make a turn off of Route 54 when she was run into by a vehicle driven by Erin Fitzpatrick of Elysburg.  Both were transported to Geisinger Medical Center for treatment. Their conditions not released. Route 54 was shut down for several hours following that crash.

CRASH IN CITY

One person was taken to UPMC Susquehanna Williamsport Regional Medical Center for treatment following a three car crash in the city of Williamsport yesterday afternoon.  That crash occurred around 5:40pm at the corner of West Fourth and Market Streets.  Police say that a driver in his early 20’s form the Linden Area suffered a medical condition at the intersection and ran into one vehicle.  His vehicle was then spun around, striking a stopped vehicle.  The driver’s in the other vehicles were not injured.   No word on the condition of the person taken to the hospital.

TEEN CHARGES FOLLOWING DISTURBANCE

A disturbance on Monday at a store in the city of Williamsport resulted in a teen being jailed on several counts.  Police say 18 year old Janell Wallace was in the Family Dollar Store at 1221 West Fourth Street around 3:10 on Monday when she  allegedly threw items on the floor and yelled at employees.  When police arrived, she allegedly kicked one officer in the leg and another in the stomach.  She was charged with assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and other counts and was jailed in lieu of $50,000 bail.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT MAN CHARGED

A South Williamsport man has been charged with terroristic threats and simple assault following an incident earlier this month.  State police on March 6th were investigating an incident at the Sheetz Market on Westminister Drive in Loyalsock Township and determined that a vehicle operated by 55 year old Michael Shields of South Williamsport was used in the commission of a crime.  When police went to his home, in the 300 block of Hastings Street that night, Shields caused a disturbance and then came out holding a firearm.  No one was hurt and he was taken into custody.

MISSING MAN IN BRADFORD COUNTY

State police in Bradford County say they are looking for a missing man from Troy.  Police say that on Sunday, 77 year old Ronald Young was reported missing from his Troy home.  They say he is known to frequently walk in wooded areas around Troy.  He is approximately 4 ft 7 inches tall, has hazel eyes, brown and balding hair with a small goatee and glasses.  Anyone with information regarding Young is encouraged ot contact state police in Towanda at 570-265-2186 or the Troy police department at 570-297-2423.

FIRE COMPANIES TO GET GRANTS

Local fire companies in Lycoming and Union Counties in 84th District State Representative Garth Everett’s District will receive grants from the Office of the State Fire Commissioner.  The grants are funded through state gaming proceeds and applications are still open until the end of May.  The grants help fund the purchase of essential equipment or assist with debt reduction.  The amount of the grants range from almost $1800 dollars up to a high of more than $14,800 dollars.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

The Great American Clean up will take place along highways across the state of Pennsylvania and PennDOT and the DEP are seeking volunteers to help.  The clean up campaign runs through May 31st and volunteer organizations, friends and co-workers come together every year for trash clean up projects.  PennDOT has offered a comprehensive webpage that includes all volunteer opportunities available from the Great American Cleanup of PA and Adopt-A-Highway to Safety training, litter brigades and more.  Find it at Penndot.gov under Roadside Beautification.

4 DUI ARRESTS MADE DURING DETAIL

Arrests made during a DUI detail in Northumberland County over the weekend.  State police say that from 10pm on Saturday night into 3am on Sunday, they set up a DUI checkpoint in the county stopping 115 vehicles.  Police say they arrested three drivers for driving under the influence of drugs with possession and another driver for driving under the influence of alcohol. In addition, they say one other person was arrested for drug possession, with 12 traffic citations issued and another 4 warnings given.

DUSHORE MAN DIES FOLLOWING LYCOMING COUNTY CRASH

A fatal crash was reported over the weekend in Northern Lycoming County.  State police in Montoursville report that 40 year old Michael Conway of Jersey Shore was driving on Little Pine Creek Road in Cummings Township around 2:45 on Sunday at a reported high rate of speed when he went across the center line on a curve and struck a vehicle head on driven by 51 year old Douglas Confer of Jersey Shore.  Confer was not injured, but Conway was flown to Geisinger Medical Center where he died from complications related to emergency surgery that evening.

MAN ARRESTED FOR GIVING FALSE ID

A 20 year old Northumberland man was placed in Union county prison on early on Saturday morning after being pulled over and giving police false identification.  State police in Milton say they pulled over Denarli Springs for speeding on Crossroads Drive in Kelly Township around 3:25am Saturday.  Police say he provided them with a false name and upon further investigation they found Springs true identity and that he had several warrants out for his arrest, and that he was driving under suspension. He was charged with providing false ID and jailedon the arrest warrants.

NAME CHANGE COMING?

BB&T Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field could be going through a name change soon.  It was announced that BB&T Banks will soon be merging with Sun Trust Banks.  BB&T for the past few years has had a sponsorship agreement with the city for the ballpark at Bowman Field where the Crosscutters play for $35,000 annually.  City officials say they do not know when a name change would take place, but the bank would be responsible for the change in signage for the ballpark.

CRASH SHUTS DOWN ROADWAY

A crash on Route 973 at Quiggleville in Lycoming County yesterday afternoon shut down a section of that roadway for several hours.   The crash happened as a vehicle struck a utility pole bringing down wires on the roadway during the afternoon. It’s not known if anyone was injured in the crash, but crews had to respond to the scene and shut down the roadway between Lycoming Creek Road and St. Michaels Road.  Detours were set up and the road was finally reopened around 9 last night.

$500,000 DAMAGE IN AREA FIRE

Damage is estimated at $500,000 dollars stemming from that fire which destroyed a Loyalsock Township home early on Sunday morning.  Fire fire broke out around 3:30am at the Poco Hills Estates home of Jean Soars quickly spreading through the structure.  Firefighters had to retreat as part of it started to collapse.  No one was injured, though one firefighter was treated for exhaustion at the scene.  A state police fire marshal was on the scene looking into the cause, and believed the fire started in a storage area underneath a sun porch there, but will be back this week to see if he can pinpoint and exact cause. Firefighters were called back twice on Sunday for flareups.

LITTER PICK UP THIS WEEK

PennDOT reports that they will have maintenance crews out on another area roadway picking up litter this week.  employees will be picking up litter on Route 15 in Lycoming County between the Foy Avenue exit ant the Tioga County line.  Once again, no traffic impacts are expected, but motorists are reminded to be alert and watch for workers near the roadway.  In addition, litter pickup continues on Route 220 this week between Williamsport and Jersey Shore.

WOMAN CHARGED AFTER DRUGS FOUND

State police in Milton say they have charged a Buffalo New York woman with possession after drugs were found on her while she was at Evangelical Hospital in Lewisburg while being treated for an overdose.  Police were called to the hospital on Saturday as two bags of suspected heroin were found with 21 year old Shauna Lauby who concealed them in a body cavity.  When a nurse tried taking the, Lauby grabbed one and ingested it.  Later more baggies were found with unspecified pills.

20 PEOPLE HOMELESS IN MT. CARMEL APT. HOUSE FIRE

Fire damage was reported as extensive following that weekend fire at an  apartment house in Mt. Carmel in Northumberland County.  The fire broke out just before 3pm on Sunday in the house at 50 North Maple Street bringing in several fire companies.  One person had to be rescued from the 2nd floor but no on was injured.  It’s believed that 20 people are left homeless due to that fire, and fire investigators say damage is so extensive, they may not be able to determine a cause.  A damasge estimate has not yet been released.

FIRE DAMAGE KEPT TO A MINIMUM

Damage was estimated at $3,000 dollars from a small fire which broke out in a barn in Hepburn Township on Sunday night.  The fire broke out around 10pm in the barn owned by Rand Lepley at 2767 Northway Road as some rags in side a wood shop in the barn apparently spontaneously combusted.  Lepley had just returned to the barn and discovered the fire and was able to keep it under control with a hose until firefighters arrived.   No one was hurt.

22 ARRESTED IN LARGE DRUG BUST OPERATION

Operation Save Milton took place last Thursday as some 160 law enforcement personnel spread out across Northumberland and Dauphin counties to arrest 22 persons involved in a drug distribution ring said to have brought in a million dollars worth of cocaine, heroin and fentanyl over the past few years.  A spike in drug overdoses cause the federal investigation in which it was found large amounts of drugs were coming into the Milton area as well as to Dauphin County from Puerto Rico and California.   Indictments were handed down and the operation began early on Thursday morning and wrapped up later in the day.  A large amount of drugs were seized as well and the defendants will be prosecuted in Federal Court.

FIRE DESTROYS A LOYALSOCK TOWNSIHP HOME

Fire destroyed a Loyalsock Township home early yesterday morning, leaving a woman homeless.  The fire broke out in the home occupied by Jean Soars at 1205 Hillsdale Avenue at Poco Farm Estates arouind 3:20am.  She was able to make it out without injury, but when firefighters arrived, they found the blaze quickly spreading through the home.  A second alarm was called in and the fire was not brought under control until around 5:30 in the morning.  A damage estimate has not yet been released, and a state police fire marshal will look into the cause. Firefighters were called back twice for flare-ups at the home.

KING STREET DELAYS

More delays in Northumberland.  UGI crews will be doing core drilling today on King Street between Water Street and the Joseph Priestly Bridge.  The work will take place from 8:30am to 2:30pm and there will be lane restrictions with flag persons controlling traffic there.  Delays are expected and motorists are reminded to be alert and drive with caution through the workzone.

THREE HOSPITALIZED FOLLOWING CRASH

Three were taken to the hospital following a crash in Loyalsock Township on Friday evening.  The crash occurred around 7;30 in the 1500 block of Northway Road Extension in Loyalsock Township as a vehicle driven by 31 year old Andrew Watson of Williamsport went off the road, back on, across the center line and struck a vehicle head on driven by an unidentified 17 year old teen boy.  Watson suffered head injuries. The other driver and his passenger, a 17 year old female were also taken the hospital.  Their conditions not released.  State police say speed and alcohol were  factor.

GREENE COUNTY MAN DIES IN FRIDAY MORNING CRASH

A fatal crash in Lycoming County on Friday morning.  It’s not clear what time the crash happened on Little Pine Road about five miles north of Waterville, as a vehicle was found off the road into a tree there around 6:30am.  Inside, emergency crews found 47 year old Brian Roberts of Carmichaels Pennsylvania in Greene County dead of blunt force trauma.  No one else was involved in that crash and it’s not known what caused the man to go off of the road.

WOMAN TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL FOLLOWING MONTGOMERY FIRE

An unidentified woman had to be rescued out of her burning apartment in Montgomery last evening.  Firefighters were called to the apartment at the Robert Montgomery Homes at 38 Bower Street, finding a mattress burning and a woman inside the apartment. She was taken out and transported to UPMC Susquehanna Williamsport Regional Medical Center for treatment of smoke inhalation.  Firefighters made quick work of the fire, with damage kept to the one apartment.  The cause is under investigation.

HOME BURGLARIZED

A burglary in Northumberland County has state police in Milton investigating.  Sometime between March 6th and the 13th someone removed $1600 dollars in cash from the Turbot Avenue in Delaware Township of Joseph Terpollilli.  State police say their investigation continues and they are asking anyone with information to giver them a call.

TWO ARRESTED FOR TRYING TO SELL HEROIN

Two Williamsport men were arrested late last month after setting up a buy of heroin with an undercover officer with the County Narcotics Enforcement Unit.  On February 22nd, the officer set up a buy with 23 year old Shyheem Gadson and 26 year old Timothy Kelly. The officer was then forced to drive the two around town as they tried to get him to use the drug in front of them. Gadson resisted arrest and injured an officer. Gadson is jailed in lieu of $200,000 bail and Kelly in lieu of #125,000 bail.

STATE SENATOR YAW TO INTRODUCE LEGISLATION

State Senator Gene Yaw from Loyalsock Township is getting set to introduce legislation which will separate the state High School Sports playoffs between public schools and private parochial and charter schools.  Yaw says the legislation would address the competitive imbalance and unfairness which results from the ability of non-boundary schools to enroll students from anywhere in the state as well as from out of state.  A similar proposal is also pending in the State House of Representatives.

RAISE THE REGION WRAPS UP

Another successful Raise the Region event wrapped up at midnight last night.  With a fundraising effort which began at 6pm on Wednesday evening, 273 non-profit agencies from across Lycoming, Montour, Northumberland, Union and Snyder Counties shared in just shy of $1.5 million dollars over the 30 hours of online fundraising.  The top agencies were the non profit Hiawatha Paddlewheel Riverboat which received a little over $72,000 dollars, The Northumberland Christian School which picked up close to $69,000 dollars and the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble Inc which picked up $50,000 dollars.  There were more than 5,200 individual donors.

BARN DESTROYED BY FIRE

Fire yesterday afternoon destroyed a barn in the Montgomery area.  The fire broke out around 4:20pm in a barn owned by the Shrimp family on Cemetery Hill road in Clinton Township bringing in firefighters from companies across three counties.  It’s believed the barn was already collapsing when firefighters arrived and they were not able to save the structure or the equipment inside. Any cattle on the farm were all reported safe and sound.  One firefighter was taken to the hospital for an unspecified reason. A damage estimate has not been released and the a state police fire marshal has been called in to investigate the cause.

COUNCIL APPROVED PARK AVENUE PLAN

Another step forward for improvement in a section of the city of Williamsport.  City Council during their meeting last night, approved a plan for improvements to the Park Avenue neighborhood which spans several blocks in the city and includes businesses, homes and low income rentals.  A consulting firm, Ingalls Planning and Design will be paid a little over $89,000 dollars to develop the plan which will include residential and commercial lots, as well as opening up the area to parks and the downtown.  Officials say it could take anywhere from a year to 15 years ot institute the plan.

COMMISSIONERS EXTEND AGREEMENT

Lycoming County Commissioners yesterday extended an agreement with the city of Williamsport which will extend the use of a remaining $177,000 dollars in grant funding from the state which will be used for a rehabilitation program for rental properties in the city’s Brodart Neighborhood.  The extension will last into June of 2020.  Officials say work there is slow due to a number of reasons.  Commissioners also discussed the fight against opioids in the county, giving State Senator Gene Yaw kudos for his recent legislation limiting opioid prescriptions.  More legislation is expected to be introduced.

SHAMOKIN MAN ARRESTED FOR CITY ASSAULT

A Shamokin man was arrested in the city of Williamsport earlier this month for an assault on his girlfriend. City police say 26 year old Basir Loyal committed the assault in the 600 block of Market Street on March the 2nd. He allegedly struck the woman in the face fracturing her eye socket and the biting her thumb during the assault.  She has not been named and was treated at a local hospital.  Loyal is charged with aggravated and simple assault and is free on $20,000 bail.

THREE CHARGED IN MUNCY TOWNSHIP

Charges of forgery, access device fraud, identity theft and conspiracy have been filed against three young men by Muncy Township Police.  Police say the three from the Bronx New York, forged a driver’s license and credit card that one of them used at the Target Store here to buy a cell phone worth $1300 dollars on another person’s account on March 8th.  One of them is also charged with resisting arrest.  The three were arraigned and jailed in lieu of $75,000 bail each.

FORMER PRIEST IN OUR AREA CHARGED

A 75 year old former priest who served a church in Snyder County in the 1980’s has been charged with molesting two altar boys at a church in Dauphin County in the 1990’s.  75 year old John G. Allen of York has been charged with four counts of indecent assault and two counts of corruption of minors for the assaults which happened at church in Harrisburg.  He was among the priests listed in a grand jury report documenting sexual abuse in the church in August.

MAN FOUND GUILTY OF SEX CHARGES

A Sunbury man has been found guilty of seven felony sex charges involving a young girl.  41 year old James Beidler has been convicted in Northumberland County Court of the charges including rape of a child, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and other counts.  He was accused of molesting a young girl from the age of five over several years.  The county’s DA’s office has asked for the minimum ten year sentence.  Sentencing will set for a later date.

YAW TO CO-CHAIR PUBLIC TV CAUCUS

23rd State Senator Gene Yaw has announced that he will serve as co-chair for the Pennsylvania Public Television Caucus during the 2019-2020 legislative session.  The Caucus is a bi-partisan bicameral legislative committee of Senate and House legislators working ot support the state’s seven public medial stations through the development of policies, legislation and state funding.  The caucus will serve as a forum through which legislators and industry representatives can collaborate on the needs of the industry.

RAISE THE REGION

The annual Raise the Region fundraising effort with the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania is underway.  Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been raised so far  with 283 non-profit agencies in Lycoming, Montour, Northumberland, Snyder and Union Counties registered.  The Blaise Alexander Family Dealership has once again supplied $150,000 dollars in stretch fund money and several area businesses and organizations are also offering prizes and incentives throughout the 30 hour event.  Go to Raise the Region.org to donate or to see the leaderboard.  We will keep you updated throughout the day.\

ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGES FILED

A Montoursville man faces a count of attempted homicide, aggravated assault and other counts following an incident at his Chestnut Street on Tuesday night.  Police say 41 year old David Hill came home, around 10:30 presumably under the influence of something and his mother with whom he lived told him to move out.  Hill then allegedly got a knife and raised it up at the woman, chasing her out of the house and to a neighbor’s hosue.  Hill accidentally stabbed himself in the leg and had to be treated at the hospital.  His mother was not injured.  He is in Lycoming County Prison

SHUNK MAN DIED IN TIOGA COUNTY CRASH

State police in Mansfield have identified the man killed in a crash in Tioga County which occurred on Tuesday evening.  Police say a tri-axle water truck driven by 59 year old Patrick McLaughlin of Shunk failed to negotiate a turn on Route 414 in Union Township around 6:45 on Tuesday evening, overturning in the roadway,.  It then traveled off the roadway and struck a concrete culvert.  McLaughlin was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash and no one else was involved.

LEVEE COSTS

Williamsport City Council’s finance and public works committees got some clarification yesterday on the cost of recertifying the levee system in Lycoming County.  The members were told by Planning and Community Development Director Fran McJunkin that the next phase of recertification which includes installation of relief wells will cost about $2 million dollars.  Other repairs and the replacement of an I wall on the Lycoming Creek Side could push costs to the $16 million dollar range over the next few years.

FEDERAL PRISON FOR DRUG RING LEADER

A man who is said to be the leader of a heroin network involving 27 people, distributing 1 to 3 kilograms of the drug across our region has been sentenced in federal court in Williamsport.  30 year old Kalif English admitted in federal court yesterday that he was in charge of the ring which distributed the drug in and around the Williamsport area from 2014 to 2016.  English was sentenced to 21 years in federal prison.  The remaining conspirators in that ring, have all been sentenced to various prison terms.

WOMAN STEALS FROM EMPLOYER

A Sunbury woman faces counts of theft by unlawful taking, theft by deception and receiving stolen property after being arrested for stealing from the Sunbury Restaurant that she worked for during July and August of this year.  36 year old Marissa Conway reportedly stole $16,000 dollars from Jay’s Tiffany’s Northside Restaurant on Fourth Street in Sunbury while the working as the manager there.  Conway has taken responsibility for the thefts but was arraigned on Tuesday and jailed in Northumberland County Prison in lieu of $20,000 bail.

MILTON WOMAN CHARGED WITH TAKING MONEY

A businesswoman from Milton is jailed in Northumberland County charged with taking about $13,000 dollars from a non-profit agency there.  40 year old Jessica Mena is accused of making 19 unauthorized bank transactions from the Sunbury based Parent to Parent Connection which links families of children and adults with disabilities or special needs.  Mena reportedly took the money for her own use, paying bills with it. She faces forgery and access device graud charges and was jailed in lieu of $50,000 bail.

CANDIDATES LIST READY

With the list of candidates complete, there is a crowded list running for Lycoming County Commissioner on the primary ballot on May 21st.  9 Republicans will vied for nomination to run in the fall including incumbents Jack McKernan and Tony Mussare.  The list also includes current Williamsport Mayor Gabriel Campana.   The two democrats are incumbent Rick Mirabito as well as Elliot Weiss.  The Republican nomination for Williamsport Mayor will be between city councilman Don Noviello, and businessman Eric Beiter.  Councilman Derek Slaughter will run unopposed for the Democratic nomination.

FORMER NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY OFFICIAL CHARGED

A former elected official in Northumberland County now faces charges for stealing from the county while in office.  Former Prothonotary Justin Dunkleberger who already faced charges from stealing from a Memorial Fund that he was administrator of, now is accused of having his office issue checks totaling $30,000 dollars to a fake company that he created over a year’s time from September of 2015 to 2016. He has been charged with four felony counts of theft as well as other charges and is free on $30,000 bail.

CHARGE FILED IN JERSEY SHORE INCIDENT

Tiadaghton Valley Regional police have charged a Jersey Shore man with aggravated and simple assault as well as harassment following that incident in Jersey Shore on Sunday in which a man suffered stab wounds to the wrist.  Police say that Matthew Bathurst and his girlfriend got involved in an argument between Zenon Herritt and his girlfriend on Sunday afternoon at an apartment house they lived in on Allegheny Street with Bathurst pulling a knife, cutting Herritt’s wrist and causing a wound which had to be treated at the hospital.  Bathurst is jailed in lieu of $50,000 dollars bail.  Herritt’s condition was not reported.

GEISINGER AND HIGHMARK TEAM UP

Geisinger and Highmark Incorporated have announced that they are teaming up for a $100 million dollar non-profit health care organization they say will work with independent physicians and community based hospitals to maintain care for patients in our region.  Officials with both organizations say the organization will use existing Geisinger Locations in Clinton, Lycoming, Sullivan and Tioga Counties including new facilities planned for Muncy and Lock Haven.  It’s hoped that the venture can lower the cost of care and bring services together in the Northcentral PA Region.

It’ s time for Raise the Region in Lycoming, Montour, Northumberland, Snyder and Union Counties. The 30 hour online fundraising effort through the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania will kick off tonight with an event at the Alexander Family Dealership in Selinsgrove and last 30 hours until midnight tomorrow night.  More than 280 non-profits have signed up, and will solicit donations from area residents which will be helped out with $150,000 in stretch funds from the Blaise Alexander Dealerships as well as other prizes and incentives from area businesses and organizations.  We will have plenty more on Raise the Region over the next two days.

POSSIBLE ASSAULT

A possible assault with a knife was reported in the borough of Montoursville last night.  Montoursville police along with state police officers responded late last night to the 1000 block of Chestnut Street for that reported assault.  No other details are available. It’s not known if anyone was hurt and there is no word on if any arrests were made.  The investigation continues.

Two Route 147 ramps were closed in the Milton Area for the bulk of the day yesterday following a gasoline tanker crash there.  The accident happened on the On-Ramp to Route 147 from Broadway around 4:40am yesterday morning as the tanker overturned.  It’s believed the driver who was not named suffered a minor injury.  Emergency Crews were dispatched to the scene and officials shut down that ramp as well as the ramp from Route 147 South to Mahoning Street while crews removed the wreckage and cleaned up at the scene.  Those ramps were closed for several hours following that crash.

CONSTABLE TO RUN FOR COMMISSIONER

Another Lycoming County resident has thrown his hat into the ring for a chance at running for Lycoming County Commissioner.  26 year old Chad Riley, a constable from Cogan House Township has announced that he will run for the Republican nomination in the May 21st primary for a chance at running for one of three commissioners spots in the fall.  Riley has expressed his dissatisfaction at the county’s deficit and says he wants to hold county departments accountable through decreased spending.  He has also expressed concerns over the ongoing taxpayer funding of the county owned White Deer Golf Course.

DRUGS FOUND, ONE ARRESTED, ANOTHER AT LARGE

Sunbury police have arrested a woman and are looking for her boyfriend after finding drugs in a home there.  Police were called by probation officers in Sunbury to the home on South 10th Street after Methamphetamine and Fenantyl were found in the home as they were checking on parolee April Baker.  Baker’s boyfriend, Joshua Shlieg took off and is still at large.  Baker was charged with possession with intent to manufacture meth and other related charges and was jailed in lieu of $200,000 bail. Two children were also found inside the home.

MAN WANTED FOR STABBING IN BERWICK

A man continues to recover from his injuries stemming from a stabbing in Berwick in Columbia County on Friday night, and police continue to look for his assailant.  Xavier Class and Bryan Arriaga-Soto got into a fight outside J.J. Bar on West Second Street in Berwick late on Friday night, when Soto pulled a knife and allegedly stabbed Class 8 times.  Class was still in critical condition, but his condition has improved.  Soto ran to a friend’s house, and washed up before going on the run.  He faces counts of attempted homicide and other charges when found.

MILL HALL MAN DIES AFTER BEING STRUCK BY VEHICLE

No charges will be filed against a truck driver who struck a Mill Hall man on Route 220 in Clinton County on Sunday night.  State police say that 26 year old Dylan Hess was in the roadway near Mill Hall just before 11pm when he was struck by a Mack Truck driven by 45 year old Christopher Long of Chandlersville Ohio.  Long stopped immediately following the accident.  Long was first taken to UPMC Lock Haven Hospital then flown onto a hospital in Allentown where he later succumbed form his injuries.

IMPAIRED DRIVING CAMPAIGN EVENT

PennDOT officials and other safety partners, as well as local law enforcement met in Lewisburg yesterday to highlight the importance of designated driving as part of the statewide Saint Patrick’s Day Impaired-driving campaign.  As part of the event, participants will distribute safe driving reminders on take-out items through Sunday, St. Patrick’s Day. The educational outreach looks to reduce impaired-driving crashes and fatalities.  Drivers can also download he free SaferRide app on their Android and Apple Devices from the Google Play or ITunes store.

PERSON STRUCK BY VEHICLE IN CITY

Williamsport police are investigating a pedestrian accident which occurred yesterday morning.   An unidentified person was crossing at West Third and Pine Streets yesterday just before 11am when they were struck by a vehicle there.  Crews were on the scene for a little over a half and hour and it’s believed that person was taken to the hospital for treatment, though their condition was not released. The driver of the vehicle was not identified and it’s not known if any charges have been filed.

REINSTATEMENT UPHELD

The State Supreme Court has refused to hear an appeal, upholding a Commonwealth Court decision, allowing a fired Lock Haven University Professor to be reinstated.  Professor Charles Morgan had been fired in 2016 after it was found that he had committed a sexual assault on two children in Kentucky in 1989 when he was 19.  Morgan did not have to reveal that conviction when he was hired at the school in 2004, and the court agreed with an arbitrator that his youthful criminal acts had not followed him into middle age.  A civil rights lawsuit against the school and the state department of education filed by Morgan remains active.

NO TAX INCREASE PRELMINARY BUDGET PASSED

As it stands right now, it looks like property owners in the Jersey Shore School District will not have to pay higher taxes next year.  The School board there last night said yes to a preliminary budget for the 2019-2020 school year of almost $43 million dollars which does not contain a tax increase.  The district had been facing budgetary problems the past few years but district officials say this budget is balanced, though final numbers such as state allocations will not be known for a few months and there may have to be some adjustment.

LEGISLATION TO HELP FUND NUCLEAR POWER

As the deadline for the eventual shutdown of the Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant in Middletown nears, one state legislator wants to help it and other financially struggling power plants in the state survive.  Representative Thomas Mahaffie of Dauphin County has introduced legislation which would pump hundreds of millions of dollars into nuclear power plants, giving those plants preferential treatment, akin to a law passed in 2004, providing money for solar power, wind power and a few other niche energy sources.

MIRABITO ANNOUNCES BID FOR ANOTHER TERM

Lycoming County Democratic Commissioner Rick Mirabito has decided to seek a second term. Saying he wants to focus on the structural deficit the county faces, by eliminating county positions as they come open either through retirement or attrition, Mirabito has announced that he will run for the democratic nomination in the May 21st primary to run in the fall for his second term.  Before being elected in 2016, Mirabito was a two term State Representative.

PUTTING HIS MONEY WHERE HIS MOUTH IS

An NBA basketball player from Williamsport who has promise that his success will lead to philanthropy in his hometown has announced his next project.  Through a spokesperson yesterday, Indiana Pacers rookie Alize Johnson said he wants to seal a memorandum of understanding with the city of Williamsport to create two NBA quality courts, preferably at Memorial Park where he learned to play basketball.  Johnson to donate $150,000 dollars for the construction.

WOMAN CHARGED FOLLOWING DISTURBANCE

State police in Montoursville are looking for more information regarding a Jersey Shore area incident which occurred last week.  Police were called on Thursday night around 8:30 to a home along State Route 973 for reports of a disturbance there.   There they found that 59 year old Michele Phillips alleged threatened an unknown 50 year old male with a knife and then sprayed pepper spray into the man’s face.  She was charged with terroristic threats and related counts and was jailed in lieu of $15,000 bail.  Police are asking anyone with information regarding the incident to call 570-368-5700.

MAN SUFFERS KNIFE WOUND IN JERSEY SHORE INCIDENT

An unidentified man suffered a knife wound to the wrist following a Jersey Shore incident yesterday.  Police were called to the home at 1342 Allegheny Street for reports of a disturbance there.  The disturbance reportedly became physical with one man suffering a bloodied nose, then going inside and allegedly causing the wound to the man who was treated at UPMC Susquehanna Williamsport Regional Medical Center.  The other person was treated at Jersey Shore Hospital. They have not been named, it’s not believed any charges have been filed yet and the investigation continues.

DRUG CHARGED FILED AGAINST TWO

A pair of Williamsport women face drug charges following drug sales at a city residence.  State police report that 33 year old Lisa Rodrguez allegedly participated in three sales of crack cocaine at her Baldwin Street home in January and February of this year.  She was charged with possession with intent to deliver, and related offenses and was jailed in lieu of $90,000 bail.  22 year old Izalia Vazquez was charged with posseissoin regarding a sale there on February 27th.  She is also jailed in lieu of $90,000 bail.

MAN CHARGED WITH FORGING CHECKS

State police in Montoursville have charged a Millville man with forging the checks of a Lycoming County woman over a more than two year period.  Police were notified in December that 41 year old Brock Adams who was the adopted grandson of the woman had basically cleaned out the bank account of the unidentified woman.  It’s believed that he forged checks from July of 2016 to November 2018, and stole more than $45,000 dollars.  He has been charged with several counts of burglary, theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property.

BAIL/RELEASE PROGRAM SAVING MONEY

It’s believed that Lycoming County has save some $3 million dollars thanks to the county’s Bail/Release program. In a report presented to the county’s Prison Board on Friday, program manager Harry Rogers presented numbers saying that the program which allows for county prisoners to be free on bail while awaiting trial, has saved the prison some 52,000 bed days in 2018.  Each bed day is a day that a client would have had to spend in prison and totals out to about $70 per day.

HOME DESTROYED BY FIRE IN CLINTON COUNTY

Fire in Clinton County over the weekend extensively damaged a home there.  Firefighters from several companies were called to the fire along Glenn Road in Allison Township near Lock Haven around 10am on Saturday.  When they arrived, they found the flames coming through the roof, and called in a second alarm.  The fire then engulfed the home. It took about a half an hour to bring it under control, and then several hours to completely put the fire out. The homeowner was not identified, and no one was injured, though a family pet died in the fire.  A state police fire marshal was called to look into the cause.

DA’S OFFICE WARNS RESIDENTS OF PHONE SCAM

The Northumberland District Attorney’s office is once again warning residents of a phone scam regarding someone calling and telling people they are an IRS agent. The latest happened to a Sunbury man with the caller saying he had to pay $5,000 dollars in back taxes immediately or go to jail,then requesting he go to CVS to pick up the cash in Google Play and/or instant pay cards.  The DA’s office is warning residents that any requests for immediate payments coupled with the threat of incarceration are scams.

SOUTHERN SECTION COMPLETION PUSHED BACK

The completion of the Central Susquehanna Valley Thruway Southern Section has been pushed back and the price of that highway has gone up.  PennDOT reported late last week that the southern section which heads down through Union and into Snyder County will not be completed until 2027 and will cost an extra $120 million dollars.  Meanwhile it was reported that the northern section is about 75% complete and should be opened in 2022.  That section will alleviate traffic congestion in communities such as Lewisburg and Northumberland.  Total cost of the project is now estimated at $865 million dollars.

MAN CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED MURDER ON TROOPER

A 27 year old Hughesville man faces over 20 counts including attempted homicide following a struggle with a state trooper yesterday.  After investigating a burglary in which Brandon Confer was allegedly involved at his mother’s house, Trooper Johnathon Buynak was dispatched to McDonalds on Route 405 around 11am, in which he found Confer and got into a struggle with the man.  Confer got a hold of the trooper’s taser and used it on trooper Buynak then allegedly pulled a knife. He was taken into custody at a home across the street.  He has been arraigned and jailed without bail and the trooper was treated at the hospital for injuries suffered in the incident.

COMPANY MAY HAVE TO SHUT DOWN OPERATIONS

Due to a decision by Lycoming County Commissioners to allow it;’s contracted Prison re-entry company to accept prisoners from state prison, a local company which also deals with re-entry services has said they may have to close.  A letter from Firetree Ltd, says they would have ot close up their services on April 1st, if the county does not rescind it’s decision to allow the state prisoners to use the GEO group.  Firetree Ltd., says the number of re-entry clients from state prison needs to be in the area of 20 to 25 to stay in business, but has averaged in the low teens since GEO’s contract with the county went into effect.

COLLEGE’S TO HELP WITH MARKETING

One thing to come out of a recent meeting with an ad-hoc committee looking into new employees to work and live in the city of Williamsport is a promise of help from the city’s two college’s.  A story in this morning’s Williamsport Sun Gazette says that the Pennsylvania College of Technology and Lycoming College have offered their assistance as partners in a marketing effort to retain and attract new employees.  The city is not only looking to attract more business and workers, but also would like to have it’s workers live within the city they work in.

BUDGET HEARINGS WRAP UP

The Pennsylvania State House Appropriations Committee wrapped up budget hearings this week, on the Governor’s proposed 2019-2020 spending plan and according to it’s chairman, many questions remain unanswered.  Chairman Stan Saylor of York County says that the governor’s proposal contains a lack of details and says those details are important for legislators to truly evaluate the governor’s proposals.  He said during the hearings that many questions that the committee had of various department heads went unanswered.  The legislature needs to pass a budget by June 30th.

COMPANY PURCHASED

A local company which does a lot of bridge work for the state, has been purchased by a company out of Minersville Pennsylvania.  It’s been announced that Quandel Inc. has purchased Susquehanna Supply Company.  Officials with the company say their plan is to hire skilled workers to rehabilitate bridges and reconstruct highways.  Company officials say they plan on relocating operations outside of the current Wiliamsport facility but will stay within Lycoming County.  Officials say the purchase will allow for the completion of needed bridge projects which previously could not be done due to limited state funding.

EVERETT WANTS MORE ALLOCATION FOR LOCAL SCHOOL

A state representative from our area wants to see more funding come from the state for a local college.  A story in this morning’s Williamsport Sun Gazette says that Representative Garth Everett who is on the Pennsylvania College of Technology Board of Directors would like to see the state’s appropriation for the school which shows a job placement of 95% for it’s graduates, rise from the current $4,635 dollars per student it currently receives.  Everett points to a much higher appropriation for schools such as Lock Haven and Mansfield Universities as well as the Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster.

VEHICLE INTO STRUCTURE

Emergency Personnel were called out yesterday for reports of a Tractor Trailer into a building near the Lycoming Mall.  The call came in shortly past 5pm, for reports of a tractor trailer which was into the Best Buy Building along Lycoming Mall Circle with unknown injuries.  Crews were only on the scene for a few minutes.  No one was injured and very little service was required following that incident.
