For the 29th consecutive year, plan to celebrate Independence Day in Williamsport with food, entertainment and thunderous fireworks as we “Set the Night to Music” co-sponsored by UPMC and the City of Williamsport! Your family will browse streets filled with food and craft vendors. At 3pm, a variety of live music starts on stage at the Hampton Inn parking lot. This star-spangled, patriotic celebration takes place under our enormous flying American Flag provided by The Pennsylvania ARMY National Guard. As darkness falls, at 9:40…that huge flag serves as the majestic backdrop for an incredible firework display choreographed to an inspiring patriotic soundtrack as we “Set the Night to Music” and light up the skies!

River Valley Transit will provide FREE bus service every 10 minutes from FREE parking lots between 6pm and 10:30pm. RVT will also provide 2 FARE FREE bus routes between 5pm – 10pm. The River Walk from Basin Street to Hepburn Street will be closed from 7am to 10pm. The Market Street Bridge will be closed to all traffic from 8:30pm to 10:15pm.
Free parking will be available at the parking garage at Church and Third streets. The lower level will be available for handicap accessible vehicles. There will be no parking on the roof levels.
Elevators to both garages will be shut down from 6pm to midnight. Security will be patrolling both parking decks, keeping spectators off the roof levels.
NO PETS, ROLLERBLADES, SKATES, BICYCLES, ELECTRIC SCOOTERS OR BICYCLES, TENTS OR FIREWORKS are permitted in the event area.
The North Shore Railroad Company & Affiliates (NSHR) will have its two Military Units parked, for public viewing, at the Set the Night to Music Fireworks Celebration on Thursday, July 4th, in Williamsport.
The new paint and artwork on LVRR 9052 (Veterans Unit) and LVRR 9050 (Memorial Unit) were unveiled in May. For more than two years, NSHR worked behind the scenes to prepare the locomotives for their dedication to United States military service members – past, present, and fallen.
It was important to NSHR to make sure these units would be a clean and respectful salute that would compel anyone who saw them to stop, reflect, pay respect, and give thanks to the men and women who selflessly laid their lives on the line in service for our country.
LVRR 9052 (Veterans Unit) portrays the silhouettes of three soldiers saluting our nation’s flag as a dedication to all service members past and present. This unit honors each soldier’s loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage, as they have chosen to commit themselves to the defense of our nation. The “All Gave Some” written on the side of the unit helps us reflect and remember the brave men and women who gave so much for us to be here today – enjoying the freedoms we have.
LVRR 9050 (Memorial Unit) echoes the shadows of two soldiers paying respect to their fallen comrade, now remembered with a Battlefield Cross, as a dedication to all service members who have lost their lives defending this great nation. The “Some Gave All” should make you bow your head and thank those who died – fighting for our freedom. Not all soldiers make it home, a reminder that there is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
NSHR knew there were many ways the locomotives could be decorated to pay homage. However, they felt the silhouettes that each locomotive now displays, would convey the most important message they could send. So, instead of using bright colors, camouflage, or red, white, and blue, the message is depicted in the silhouettes on each unit.
When you see the Veterans Unit and Memorial Unit, please take a moment to pause, pay respect, and give thanks to our Nation’s Military Members. Our respect and gratitude will never be enough for what has been so selflessly given on our behalf.
As a matter of safety, members of the public must remain on public property (at a safe distance from the railroad) and may not climb on the locomotives.

This 4th of July, the Williamsport Bureau of Police would like everyone to be safe and considerate of their neighbors when using fireworks. While certain fireworks are now legal in Pennsylvania, it is important for everyone to understand what the law permits and what it does not permit. The City of Williamsport recognizes Act 43 of 2017 House Bill No. 542 governing the sale, purchase and use of “Consumer Fireworks” (Class C.) All persons who use “Consumer Fireworks” shall follow all rules and regulations outlined in Section 2404 Use of Consumer Fireworks as well as the following conditions:
- Persons who are at least 18 years of age and meet the requirements of this article may purchase, possess and use consumer fireworks.
- Fireworks cannot be ignited or discharged on a public or private property without express permission of the property owner.
- Fireworks cannot be discharged from or within a motor vehicle or building.
- Fireworks cannot be discharged toward a motor vehicle or building.
- Fireworks cannot be discharged within 150 feet of an occupied structure.
- Fireworks cannot be discharged while the person is under the influence of alcohol, a controlled substance or another drug.
The City Ordinance further states that these fireworks shall be approved for use starting the weekend before July 4 and be permitted for use through the following calendar weekend. For purposes of this provision the weekend starts on Friday and then would conclude the following Sunday. Times for approved consumer fireworks shall be 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. Any violation of these provisions could be subject to a fine of up to $600 and/or imprisonment of up to 90 days.
The Williamsport Bureau of Police would again like to remind everyone to have a safe holiday. If you plan to use any approved fireworks, please be mindful of your surroundings and respectful to your fellow community members.
