LITTLE LEAGUE PLAYER WHO FELL FROM BUNK IMPROVES

12 year-old  Easton Oliverson, the Little League player from Utah who suffered a serious head injury after falling from a bunk at the Little League barracks Sunday is improving rapidly, according to a post on the family’s Facebook page for Easton.  According to the update, Easton has been removed from assisted breathing and is responding to therapy and treatment already, and is expected to continue to improve at Geisinger’s Janet Weis Children’s Hospital, where he was flown after the overnight accident.  According to Penn Live, Little League International has responded to the accident by saying they will remove the bunk beds from the dormitory. Easton’s father, Jace Oliverson, is an assistant coach for the Snow Canyon Little League team and says they are grateful for the prayers of the community.

FUGITIVE WOMAN IN CUSTODY

A Piatt Township woman, who police say was a fugitive, was taken into custody last month and has since been arraigned on possession of drug charges and tampering with evidence.  According to the Sun Gazette, 38 year old Tasha Marie Wall was pursued by Tiadaghton Valley regional Police after she was seen hiding in the bushes behind her home.  Wall resisted arrest and was found trying to allegedly destroy the methamphetamine she had in her pocket.  She was arraigned re-incarcerated under no bail.

SOUTHEAST PA PARKS PROHIBIT SOME GUNS

DCNR has made changes to four state parks in Southeastern PA prohibiting rifles and handguns there.  The new policy for Evansburg, Marsh Creek and Nockamixon State parks and White Clay Creek Preserve only allows shotguns, muzzleloaders and bow hunting.  According to an news release by PA DCNR, all center fire and rim fire rifles and handguns are prohibited for the purpose of hunting.  The changes take effect immediately.

PENNDOT HAS TRAFFIC TOOL FOR WORLD SERIES

PennDOT has launched a Little League Traffic Tool for fans heading to South Williamsport that is a part of the 511PA website.  According to a press release from the department, traffic increases along I-180, Route 220 northbound, and Route 15 in and around Lycoming County during the Little League World Series and the website 511PA.com forward slash LLWS helps show traffic congestion along the major routes to the event.  Expect delays in our region from today through Sunday August 28th when the series concludes.

POLICE SEARCH FOR WEAPON, FIND DRUGS

Williamsport police executed a search warrant to search for an AR-15 that was used in a crime two weeks ago at a residence on Catherine Street, and discovered a large bag of marijuana and scales during the search.  According to North Central PA dot com, 50 year old Davere Andre McClain was charged with felony possession with intent to deliver after police obtained a second search warrant for the drugs.  An additional affidavit was also filed on McClain August 11th , after he gave narcotics to a person to sell and police witnessed the exchange.  McClain is in Lycoming County Prison on 50 thousand dollars bail.

CAPITOL RIOT SUSPECT FROM HARRISBURG DENIED VENUE CHANGE

A Harrisburg woman who allegedly stole House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s laptop during the January 6th riot, has had her request to move her trial from Washington DC to Harrisburg, denied by a federal judge..  According to WPMT in Harrisburg Riley William’s attorney filed the motion so she could be in front of a more impartial jury.  US District Judge, Amy Berman Jackson said the jury process is the way to determine whether a jury pool is impartial.  Williams is required to wear an ankle monitor and is under house arrest until her trial which will be now be scheduled for next summer after her potential plea deal broke down in court this week. 

BUCKNELL SPEAKER SERIES TO START IN SEPTEMBER

Bucknell University will bring back the Bucknell Forum Speaker Series beginning Tuesday, September 13th for a virtual exchange with former National Security Advisor Condoleeza Rice.  According to a press release from the University, president John Bravman will host the event via Zoom  at 7pm at the Weis Center for the Performing Arts, and Ms. Rice will discuss the theme “The State of American Democracy”.  The Bucknell Forum will feature three more in-person speakers through next spring, including Author and CNN anchor Jake Tapper in November, former Ohio governor, John Kasich along with Obama Adviser, David Axelrod in February, and finally author and 1986 Bucknell graduate Barbara F. Walter in April.  Students and employees get two free tickets for each event.

POLL WORKERS SOUGHT IN PENNSYLVANIA

In recognition of Help American Vote Day this week, the Wolf administration has released a statement inviting residents to serve as poll workers during the upcoming November 8th, 2022 election. According to a press release on PA dot gov, Acting Secretary of the Commonwealth, Leigh M. Williamsport native and NBA Forward Alize Johnson has agreed to a one-year, $2 million deal with the San Antonio Spurs, according to his agent George Langberg. Johnson has played for the Indiana Pacers, Brooklyn Nets, Chicago Bulls, New Orleans Pelicans and Washington Wizards. The 26-year-old was the 50th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.

LITTLE LEAGUE PLAYER INJURED IN NON-GAME ACCIDENT

A Little League player from Utah was hospitalized with a serious head injury overnight Sunday after he fell from the top bunk bed in the barracks in Williamsport.  According to a Fox news affiliate in Salt Lake City, Utah, Easton Oliverson was airlifted to Danville where he went through surgery successfully, and is still in critical condition awaiting more tests.  Easton is a member of Snow Canyon Little League, the first ever team from Utah to compete in the Little league World Series, representing the Mountain region. His family and supporters have rallied for Easton’s recovery and say his team will play on in the series.

SEVERAL STILL HOSPITALIZED AFTER HIT AND RUN IN BERWICK

There are four people still hospitalized in critical condition and ten others have been released, after a car careened into a group of supporters Saturday night at a fundraiser for the family who lost 10 people in an August 5th fire in Nescopeck.  According to the Sun Gazette, police say 50 year old Rebecca Reese was the victim killed at the fundraiser, when 24 year old Adrian Sura Reyes drove into the gathering of about 75 in a parking lot at a bar in Berwick.  Investigators say Reyes purposefully struck the people then went a mile away to his home, where he allegedly hit his mother with the car and then beat her with a hammer.  He is in Columbia County prison under no bail and will have a preliminary hearing August 29.

HOMEOWNERS CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF GRANTS

Thanks to a bipartisan budget plan that was passed last month, low and middle income homeowners will be able to take advantage of the Whole Home Repair Bill, which provides up to 50 thousand dollars worth of funds for homeowners to make repairs they are struggling to afford.  Landlords with 5 properties or less are eligible for the grants, as well.  The first-in-the-nation program is a first step to address the affordable housing crisis in the Commonwealth and Congress has earmarked 125 million dollars in the budget for it.

HOT WEATHER DRESS CODE FOR SHAMOKIN

The Shamokin Area School District will allow a relaxed dress code for the start of school due to no air conditioning in the elementary school and only partial air in the high school.  According to media outlets, Shamokin Superintendent, Chris Venna, sent an email to parents and said the dress code will allow students to wear t-shirts without collars and shorts that go to the knee at least from the start of school next Monday until September 2nd.  Students may carry water bottles with them, also to help stay hydrated in the warm classrooms.

MAN ARRESTED FOR SELLING FENTANYL TO INFORMANT

A Williamsport man who allegedly sold fentanyl to a confidential informant at a home on Park Avenue has been charged in Lycoming County court.  According to North Central PA dot com, 37 year old Mikal Lamar Lattimore was charged August 3rd with felony drug possession and criminal use of a communication device after the informant contacted him on social media for the drugs earlier this year. Lattimore is being held on 75 thousand dollars bail and will be arraigned August 29th.

MINOR ACCUSED OF SETTING FIRE TO A SNYDER COUNTY BARN

A 14 year old minor in Snyder County has been charged with setting a barn on fire.  According to North Central PA dot com, Bennerville Fire Company was dispatched to a barn fire at the 1000 block of Fairview Road in West Beaver Township at about 10:30 pm on August 2nd.  State police started an investigation and found the 14 year old was responsible for the blaze, but no injuries were reported.  The fire caused about 10 thousand dollars-worth of damage, but no word on the charges against the 14 year old.

NEW FUNDS FOR WATER SYSTEM IN JERSEY SHORE

Senator Gene Yaw of the 23rd District helped secure an investment of about 375 thousand dollars in American Rescue Plan Act Funds that will go to help improve water service under the Jersey Shore Joint Water Authority, according to a news conference held Friday at the Williamsport Lycoming Chamber of Commerce.  The Sun Gazette reports the funding is part of a million dollar grant that also will help the Montgomery Water Authority, and be especially helpful for service for the Timber Run Industrial Park.  The funds are expected to be used to repair a water line that has been exposed on Larry’s Creek along Route 287, that services almost 7 thousand customers.

KRAFT-HEINZ RECALLS CAPRI SUN POUCHES

Pittsburgh based Kraft Heinz has recalled thousands of Capri Sun juice pouch cases after cleaning solution was discovered to have mixed with the juice during processing.  According to a statement by the company Friday, Capri Sun Wild Cherry flavored juice with a best used by date of June 25th 2023 is the lot of juice pouches affected by the recall.  The company is working with retailers to make sure the produce is off store shelves.  If you have some of this product, don’t consume it and return it to the store from where you bought it for a refund.

ACCIDENT AT NESCOPECK FUNDRAISER KILLS 1 INJURES 17

During a fundraiser for the 10 victims who died in a house fire in Nescopeck last week, a vehicle drove into the crowd gathered for the occasion outside a Berwick bar, killing one person and injuring 17.  Police say the suspect also allegedly assaulted another person directly after that incident.  According to the Sun Gazette, 24 year old  Adrian Sura Reyes of Nescopeck was identified as the suspect from the accident at the fundraiser, after police took him into custody nearby at the home of Reyes’ mother who had been killed with a hammer.  Police say the man is not a suspect in the house fire, and he is incarcerated in Columbia County prison with no bail.

CITY FINANCES UNDER A MICROSCOPE FOR IRREGULARITIES

The City of Williamsport, is dealing with financial irregularities that have been discovered after an outside consulting firm was hired to help the city get its finances back in order. This comes after seventeen year Director of Finance, Joe Pawlak, had retired in June. According to the Sun Gazette, incomplete IRS reporting, and other issues date back as far as 2017, and the city’s finances are under state investigation by the Attorney General’s office, in regard to River Valley Transit’s misappropriation of funds.

LOYALSOCK TWP LANE CLOSURE TUESDAY

There will be a lane closure on the Golden Strip tomorrow between 9am and 3pm.  According to PennDOT, East Third Street in Loyalsock Township will be down to a single lane with the right lane closed, for a construction project. A contractor will be performing construction work on the entrance of the Dunkin Donuts that has been closed for a remodel of their parking lot.  They are expected to reopen with a double drive thru in September.

GRAND SLAM PARADE CLOSES STREETS IN WILLIAMSPORT TODAY

The 16th Annual Little League World Series Grand Slam Parade will kick off tomorrow in downtown Williamsport. The parade steps off at 5:30pm at the intersection of Susquehanna and West Fourth Street and proceeds east to the intersection of West Fourth and Market Streets. The downtown festival begins at 4pm.
* West Fourth Street between Hepburn and Market streets will be closed from 2pm to the end of the parade.

• Staging area at Hepburn Street to Government Place will be blocked off and monitored for pedestrian traffic only at 2pm

• Vine Avenue will close completely for the staging area at 4pm

• No parking on West Fourth Street between Market and Grier streets at 4pm

• Fourth Street closed from Susquehanna to Rose streets at 4pm

• Begin rolling street closure between Susquehanna and Hepburn streets on Fourth Street at 5:15pm

• Market Street closed between Third and Fourth streets at 6pm

City streets will begin to re-open as soon as the last parade entry passes through the area.

Only the section between Market and West Fourth streets will remain closed until all safety barricades are removed.

BARN FIRE IN MORRIS SUNDAY

Lycoming county firefighters responded Sunday after 2pm when an old barn in Morris was on fire, but mostly worked to keep other structures from igniting near the Pine Township property.  According to the Sun Gazette, a barn on Potato Patch lane burned out of control for about an hour and volunteers from Liberty, Blossburg, Middlebury Township and others kept two nearby properties from sustaining any damage.  One firefighter was treated and released for heat exhaustion.  Authorities suspect a spark from a campfire that hadn’t been properly extinguished started the fire. 

MOTORCYCLIST TO BE CHARGED AFTER ACCIDENT

A motorcyclist remains in critical condition, after an accident Friday morning in Northumberland County. 51 year old Raymond Hauck of Dewart, lost control of his motorcycle and laid it down.  According to the Daily Item, the accident happened at the intersection of Route 405 and Main Street in Delaware Township around 3am. According to State Police, Hauck will be charged in the incident because he was driving with a suspended license.

FORMER KOHL’S EMPLOYEE ARRESTED FOR THEFT

A former Kohl’s Department Store employee has been charged with theft by unlawful taking, amongst other charges after allegedly taking cash from a cash register over numerous times during a seven day period. According to North Central PA dot com, Morgan Elizabeth McDermott began the thefts on June 13th and continued three more times, until June 20th. McDermott admitted to the store’s Loss Prevention team of the thefts. McDermott awaits a preliminary hearing in district court.

JUDGE VACATES PRIOR RULING OVER LYCO BUDGET AND FINANCE

The Lycoming County commissioners get to keep general ledger, payroll and accounting under their control after a Potter County senior judge vacated a previous order that was to move those functions back under the authority of Controller Krista B. Rogers. According to the Sun Gazette, a dispute began in April of 2021 when the Lycoming County Commissioners voted to transfer Budget and Finance employees to their department citing problems with financial oversight and tax dollar waste.  Rogers countered last year’s move with more legal action.

MAN WHO DESTROYED HOUSE WITH HOMEMADE M80S SENTENCED

A Trout Run man who destroyed his home and lost his hand due to malfunctioning, homemade M80s has been sentenced in Lycoming County Court.  According to Penn Live, 47 year old Seth Magargle was given 7 years probation and is required to repay the insurance company after he pled guilty to reckless endangerment and risking a catastrophe after state police found materials from the explosives in the debris of Magargle’s burned out home.  Lycoming County President Judge Nancy Butts ordered electronic monitoring for a portion of the sentence.

PA GOP SUBPOENAED AFTER FBI RAID

One day after a Pennsylvania GOP legislator had his cell phone seized by FBI officials, several other PA lawmakers have been subpoenaed by the FBI to testify as part of the investigation into the fake elector scheme attempting to keep former President Donald Trump in office after the Election of 2020. According to Penn Live, Pennsylvania House and Senate Republican leaders did not confirm that anyone received subpoenas, but Representative Scott Perry of Pennsylvania and John Eastman, a Trump ally and alleged architect of the elector plot both had their phones seized and searched .  No members of the PA legislature are indicated to be targets of the criminal probe, only actors who could have information relevant to the investigation.

LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES GUESTS ARRIVE THIS WEEKEND

This weekend we will see the start of the world arriving on our doorstep for the 75th anniversary of the Little League World Series in South Williamsport.  The Lycoming County Visitor’s bureau says 20 teams and their families will be involved in the Little League Grand Slam Parade that steps off at 5:30 p.m.at the intersection of Susquehanna and West Fourth Streets Monday night.  West Fourth Street between Hepburn Street and Market Street will close Monday at 2:00pm.  Vine Street will close at 4pm for staging. This year’s parade Grand Marshal is former New York Yankees and Hall of Fame Pitcher, Mariano Rivera.

NY WOMAN ARRESTED FOR TRESPASSING, RESISTING ARREST

A woman who is an admitted heroin addict, struggled with an Old Lycoming Township police officer as he attempted to take her into custody on Wednesday.  According to the Sun gazette, while 28 year old Amanda Bidetti of Brooklyn, New York was being cuffed for trespassing near  the 2200 block of Lycoming Creek Road, she overtook the officer, putting him a chokehold until he regained control of Bidetti with help from other officers on the scene.  Police found drug paraphernalia in the woman’s purse and charged her with simple assault resisting arrest and other charges.  She is in Lycoming County prison with no bail.

LOCAL TEACHER BACK IN JAIL AFTER PAROLE VIOLATION

A former Central PA teacher on probation for a single felony count of sexual assault for which he was convicted in March of 2020, has violaged his probation and will be incarcerated for the remainder of his sentence.  According to North Central PA dot com, 30 year old Cole Black, who was a former Keystone Central teacher,  admitted prior to a polygraph test that he had committed behaviors that violate his court ordered agreement, such as viewing pornography, drinking alcohol and being in the presence of minors.   Black also taught at Bucktail and assisted soccer teams in Montoursville.  He will remain in the Clinton County Prison for the remainder of his sentence, likely the end of 2022.

AUDIT FOR GREGG TWP VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS

The Gregg Township Fireman’s Relief Association has been called out for problems with their audit by the state auditor general who says there is 30 thousand dollars in funds missing.  According to the Record online, the district attorney of Centre County has been asked to investigate the association.  A June audit that covered January 2017 through December 2021 had eight findings detailing noncompliance with prior audit recommendations, undocumented spending and unknown withdrawals, inadequate record-keeping.  There is no accusation of law-breaking, they are concerned with poor procedures and documentation.

MONTOUR-DELONG FAIR GOES THROUGH SATURDAY

The Montour Delong Fair continues through tomorrow night with the traditional fair food, rides, bulls and tractor pulls in Danville.  Farm Tractor pulls are tonight and there is always free musical entertainment on the main stage that starts at 6pm, and the Montour Delong Kitchen features a daily meal starting at 4pm; Fish and Mac & Cheese on the menu today and Chicken and Biscuits tomorrow.  The fair is free to attend, but parking is $5 a night.  Details at montourdelongfair.com.

The Republican nominee for Pennsylvania Governor was in Washington DC yesterday to record an interview for the committee investigating the January 6th Insurrection at the Capitol building.  According to the Sun Gazette, Doug Mastriano had a brief session which lasted about 15 minutes to discuss his role in submitting a list of alternate electors who backed the former president.  A subpoena was issued last February for Mastriano to appear.  His lawyer says they will challenge the validity of the January 6th committee in court.

BAIL MODIFIED FOR TWO CHARGED WITH SEXUAL ASSAULT

Bail for two people from Williamsport accused of felony sexual assault of a 6-year old child has been modified in Lycoming County Court.  According to North Central PA dot com, the public defender for defendant Marcus McDaniel, recently argued against his bail conditions including intense supervision with an electronic ankle monitor, but Lycoming County Supervised bail will make the  final decision.  McDaniel who currently lives in Chester County, is free on 150 thousand dollars unsecured bail and is ordered to have no contact with minors or the co-defendant, Michelle Strayer.  Strayer’s bail was also modified and she was released from the Lycoming County Prison.  McDaniel has a criminal pre-trial hearing September 16th, Strayer will enter a guilty plea November 29th.

CONDITION OF MOTORCYCLIST UPGRADED

An out-of-state motorcyclist who was injured Sunday along I-80 east of the Danville exit has been upgraded to fair condition according to local hospital officials.  According to State police, 55 year old Timothy Mitchell lost control of his motorcycle as he attempted to merge into the right lane from the left near exit 228 near West Hemlock Township.  He was transported to the hospital just after 7pm.  Police say Mitchell was wearing a helmet during the Montour County crash.

UMC ACCEPTING APPLICATION FOR THE FALL

The Uptown Music Collective in Williamsport is accepting applications through this Friday for fall enrollment.  According to a press release, the semester starts August 29th for 15 weeks for in-person and virtual instruction on guitar, bass, keyboards, drums and vocals and accept students of all levels.  The Collective will continue the Adult Music Program as well and financial assistance is available. NEW JUDGE APPOINTED TO LYCO COURT OF COMMON PLEAS

Lycoming County has a new Judge of the Court of Common Pleas.  According to North Central PA dot com, William Carlucci was appointed during a ceremony last Friday  to serve until January 1st, 2024 filling vacancies left on the court.  Judge Marc Lovecchio and Judge Joy Reynolds McCoy departed the court in the past two years.  According to the District Court administrator, Carlucci will preside over civil and family law matters, and will need to be chosen in the next judicial election to remain a common pleas judge. 

LOCK HAVEN WOMAN ARRESTED FOR TRESPASSING

State police at Lamar have arrested a Lock Haven woman who refused to leave a home in Mill Hall.  According to police reports, troopers responded to the trespassing call and found 21 year old Jasmine Hoffman refusing to leave the property unless she was given a ride back to Lock Haven.  The 62 year old male who owned the home said Hoffman was not welcome on his property.  Troopers transported Hofffman to the Clinton County Correctional facility where she was arraigned with bail set for fifteen hundred dollars.  She will face defiant criminal trespassing charges during her preliminary hearing on August 16th . 

FIRST OF 150 ELECTRIC CAR CHARGING STATIONS PLANNED

PennDOT has submitted plans for the first 27 charging stations that will be built along Pennsylvania highways as part of the Biden administration’s economic stimulus program.  According to a press release, the work is part of a total 150 charging stations that will fill in gaps along PA interstates every 50 miles.  The PA Department of Transportation has allocated about 170 million dollars for the 5 year plan through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program.  PennDOT will ask for proposals from private developers to install the stations and expects to award contracts early next year.

ELECTRONICS FUNDRAISER SOON

There will be an electronics recycling fundraiser held by the Buffalo Valley/Lewisburg Kiwanis Club on August 20th at the Recycling Center on Fairground Road in Lewisburg from 9am until 4pm.  According to the Daily Item, the Kiwanis will accept unwanted cellphones, radios and hand-held devices as well as laptops cameras, electronic game consoles, computer towers, flat screen TVs and more.  Small items can be recycled for 7 – 10 dollars each and the fee up to 35 dollars for large TV’s and entertainment centers.  The money raised will support children’s educational, medical and recreational services.  Items not being accepted include curved screen or projection TV’s and anything containing freon.

The Big Ten’s next round of media rights contracts will not include a deal with ESPN. They were looking for a seven-year deal worth $380 million per year from ESPN, and the network declined.  ESPN has held television rights for the Big Ten since the mid-1980s. The network has shared Big Ten rights with Fox in the latest contract. Fox owns 61% of the Big Ten Network and will remain the primary rights holder. Sports Business Journal says CBS and NBC are each positioned for a piece of the conference’s rights for upward of $300 million per year.

DEFENSE ATTORNEY CHARGED WITH PROSTITUTION

A Lackawanna County defense attorney has been charged with prostitution after allegedly coercing clients or family members of clients to pay for legal services with sexual acts and pornographic photos.  According to North Central PA dot com, the PA Attorney General, Josh Shapiro, announced the criminal charges against Corey Kolcharno, who Shapiro says chose his victims because of their history with addiction, and other vulnerabilities.  Charges stem from incidents involving Kolcharno and at least four victims between 2018 and 2022.  Promoting prostitution is a third degree felony.

ROAD CONSTRUCTION IN WILLIAMSPORT

Watch for construction during the day today, along I-180 in both directions which could slow your commute.  According to PennDOT, lane restrictions will be in place while crews perform roadway maintenance between Route 87 in Fairfield Township and the Route 15 northbound interchange in Williamsport.  Work is to take place between 9am and 3pm and will affect traffic coming from Loyalsock Township as well.

NEW WAGE LAWS FOR TIP EARNERS

The PA Department of Labor and Industry has modernized regulations to protect wages earned by service industry workers that took effect last Friday, August 5th.  There are five new areas that have been revised for tipped workers.  First, the new definition of a tipped worker means they can now earn up to 135 dollars in tips monthly rather than the previous 30 dollars per month, before their wage changes from $7.25 to $2.83 per hour.  Other changes involve differences in tip-credit conditions for employers, federal regulatory updates about tip-pooling, a prohibiting of taking fees from tips left by customers through credit card transactions and a requirement to inform guests that services fees are not gratuities.  Overtime regulations for hourly workers are not changing at this time. 

TIOGA COUNTY FAIR THIS WEEK

It’s senior citizen day at the 56th annual Tioga County Fair today.  Gates open at 10am and rides begin running at 5pm all this week except for Wednesday and Saturday when they start at noon. There is a talent competition Wednesday at 7pm with almost a thousand dollars in cash prizes available.  Information and tickets for entertainment like Grammy award winning bluegrass artist Rhonda Vincent coming up for two shows Thursday as well as tickets all week for the rodeo, tractor pull and demolition derby are available at tiogacountyfair.com.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT VICTIMS IN NESCOPECK HOUSE FIRE

More information is coming out in the investigation of the deaths of 5 remaining victims of the fire that tore through a home on First Street in Nescopeck early last Saturday morning.  According to the Daily Item, the coroner there reported that all 10 of the victims died of smoke inhalation and that their pets also perished.  Police say 3 people escaped the fire, but State police are still investigating the cause of the fatal blaze.  There is a GoFundMe page set up online for the “Nescopeck House Fire”, raising money for the family who lost so much more than just their possessions. Donations are also being accepted at the Nescopeck Volunteer Fire Company on Warren Street.

COVID VAX REQUIRED AT BUCKNELL THIS FALL

Students at Bucknell University will require a COVID vaccination to be on campus unless they get a medical or religious exemption this fall.  According to PennLive, health personnel will meet with those choosing not to vaccinate to discuss the risks of not receiving it.  Students coming to campus are not required to provide a negative test, but they are encouraged to home test and if they test positive before their planned arrival date, they are to arrange a new date to come to school.  New student orientation is Aug. 17 with fall semester classes beginning Aug. 22.

PA CAPITOL POLICE OFFER PAID INTERNSHIP

There’s a new paid internship program within the Pennsylvania Capitol Police for those seeking a career in law enforcement.  According to  Penn Live, the incentive is to potentially add officers to the force that has struggled with shortages, and will provide the income for 6 months while they pursue their police certification through Harrisburg Area Community College.  Interns can earn around 42 thousand dollars and will be able to complete their Act 120 Classes – the state’s basic police education – at HACC for free. 

ARTIST PROPOSAL BEING SOUGHT FOR LEWISBURG

The Lewisburg Arts Council is seeking an artist or a group of artists to submit a proposal for an outdoor site-specific temporary art project before August 27th.  The council is looking to consider artists who have a strong connection to Central Pennsylvania, and create a project that will last a minimum of 30 days and enhance pedestrian level interactions.  There is a seven thousand dollar budget for the project in The Piers Art Park near Cherry Alley in Lewisburg.  Email lewisburgpublicart@ gmail.com for information about the submission requirements.  Applicants will be notified by September 7th and the installation will begin by October 15th, 2022.

  • Matt Carpenter’s dream comeback season with the New York Yankees was intterupted Monday night.  Carpenter broke his left foot when he fouled off an 89 mph slider from Seattle Mariners starter Logan Gilbert in the first inning. He will be out indefinitely.

For the first time in six years, the Penn State football program will go into a fall season unranked in the preseason AFCA Coaches Poll. Penn Live reports the Nittany Lions were receiving votes in the poll released yesterday and with 246 points came 11 points shy of No. 25 Houston. Only Iowa with 248, received more votes among unranked teams in a top-25 headlined by No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Georgia, No. 4 Clemson and No. 5 Notre Dame.

MAN WANTED FOR PFA SEEN BY POLICE ON A SCOOTER, ARRESTED

Police recognized a man who was wanted on a PFA driving by them on an electric scooter and apprehended him earlier this week.  According to North Central PA dot com, 32 year old Ju Michael Drummond of Williamsport was stopped by police and had approximately 36 grams of crack cocaine on his person. In addition to charges about the drugs and paraphernalia, Drummond was also charged with three more drug felony charges including three counts of intentional possession of a controlled substance. Drummond was incarcerated at the Lycoming County Prison in lieu of $95,000 bail, and his preliminary hearing is August 16th.

JOSH SHAPIRO VISITS CLINTON COUNTY

The Democratic candidate for Pennsylvania Governor visited north central PA over the weekend.  According to the Sun Gazette, Current Attorney General, Josh Sharpiro was in Clinton County and spoke to residents who gathered at the Clinton County Democratic Headquarters to hear about the direction of his campaign.  He told those who were gathered there with him that it is critically important to show up for rural counties who often get forgotten.  Shapiro has been PA’s Attorney General since 2017.

OVERNIGHT CONSTRUCTION IN COLUMBIA COUNTY

Columbia County will continue to see overnight construction along Interstate 80 through this week.  According to PennDOT, the closures will begin each night at 7pm at the Berwick/Route 11 northbound exit of I-80 241-B, for pavement work.  The detour in place will be using exit 242, Route 339/ Mifflinville. Crews will be on the scene in the daytime, but closures will only be 7pm til 6am through this Friday.

VALLEY AREA UNITED WAYS TO MERGE IN SEPTEMBER

A merger is underway for several United Way agencies across the Susquehanna Valley. According to North Central PA dot com, the United Way of Columbia and Montour Counties and the Greater Susquehanna Valley United Way will officially merge September 1st.  The two boards had been discussing the merger for over a year, and they ultimately voted unanimously to approve it.  Officials estimate that they will increase the organization’s reach area to approximately 260,000 people, and include 58 agencies across 5 counties.

TWO OFFICERS FILE SUIT FOR DISCRIMINATION

Two Williamsport Bureau of Police officers have filed a discrimination lawsuit, after being passed over for promotions within the department, dating back to 2017. Officers Steven Helm and Fred Miller, filed the claims in state court, even though they are awaiting the outcome of another case in federal court. According to Northcentral PA dot com, the two officers were overlooked due to their activity as union officials, which also include their involvement in a separate civil suit against the city for anti-union activity.

PHILLY FUGITIVE WANTED FOR HOMICIDE ARRESTED IN LYCO

Williamsport Bureau of Police, along with the U.S. Marshal Service, and members of the Philadelphia Police Department, took a man wanted for homicide into custody Thursday in Lycoming County. Marcus Anthony Bell was extradited back to Philadelphia shortly after being apprehended by the authorities. There was no word on what area of the county Bell was found.  The 37-year-old was wanted for a homicide that occurred in Philadelphia.

COMMONWEALTH UNIVERSITY TO ACCEPT CREDITS FROM NPRC

Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania, which makes up Bloomsburg, Lock Haven and Mansfield; have signed a transfer agreement with Northern Pennsylvania Regional College in Warren, PA, that will allow students to transfer credits from NPRC to one of the Commonwealth University campuses. Northern Regional has 25 classroom sites in nine counties, and offers workforce development opportunities and associate’s degrees. Additionally, CU will award four tiers of transfer scholarships to NPRC graduates.

GRANT FOR TOWER IMPROVEMENTS AWARDED LOCALLY

Improvements continue to be the focus for Montoursville’s Williamsport-Lycoming Regional Airport and it could mean improvements for exsiteing structures there. According to the Sun Gazette, a grant of $700,000 will go toward refurbishing the 60 year old control tower. The grant money is coming to the airport, through the FAA Contract Tower Competitive Grant Program, which awards grants to improve infrastructure of air traffic control towers at small-town and municipal airports.

Kevin Harvick picked up the win at Michigan International Speedway Sunday ending his 65 race winless streak at the Firekeepers Casino 400.  Harvick has now qualified for this year’s 16-car postseason playoff race.  Three races remain in the regular season at Michigan International Speedway. Bubba Wallace was second, followed by Denny Hamlin, Joey Logano, and Ryan Blaney rounding out the top five.

MAN PLEADS GUILTY IN THREE CASES AGAINST HIM

A Williamsport man pleaded guilty in three active case against him this week, including possession with intent to deliver, identity theft and attempting to fake a drug test with drug-free urine.  According to North Central PA dot com, Carl Caum could receive up to a 23 month sentence, a fine and probation for the identity theft, running concurrent with the 5 years probation for the drug charges.  Caum will face a judge for sentencing in October.  Caum also will owe over 14 hundred dollars restitution. 

BEAR STRUCK ON ROUTE 120

A Renovo woman struck a bear crossing Route 120 early Sunday morning.  According to State police, Anna M. Young was traveling southbound and while rounding a curve around daybreak on July 31st, and struck the bear crossing Renovo Road.  Police say Young’s car sustained disabling damage, but the woman only suffered minor injuries.  No word on the condition of the bear. 

TURNPIKE TOLLS WILL GO UP IN 2023

There has been a toll increase approved by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission that will raise prices on the highway by five percent.  According to Penn Live, the increase will affect EZ Pass and Toll by Plate customers.  The toll hike is the 15th one in so many years, after the highway commission has been forced to raise tolls to help pay for Pennsylvania’s unmet transportation funding projects – due to Act 44 of 2007.  The new prices take affect on January 8th of 2023.

THEFT AT WALMART IN LEWISBURG

A man from Dalmatia, who police accuse of stealing more than two thousand dollars worth of merchandise from the Walmart in Lewisburg, was charged with a felony.  According to North Central PA dot com, state police at Milton say 25 year old Logan Shaffer stole computer items, a drone, men’s cologne and more July 11th.  Shaffer was arraigned in Lewisburg Courtroom last Thursday.

THIRD-PARTY CANDIDATES FILE FOR NOVEMBER BALLOT

Candidates for Pennsylvania Governor, and US Senate from the Keystone ,  Libertarian  and the Green Parties have filed paperwork prior to the deadline Monday to have their names appear on the November 8th general election ballot.  Each of the groups’ candidates qualified for the ballot by obtaining five thousand signatures from registered voters in Pennsylvania.  Typically, in a close general election, the third party ballots can tip control of the legislation between the major party candidates.

GRANTS MADE AVAILABLE FOR CHICKEN FARMERS

In coordination with the US Department of Agriculture, the Pennsylvania legislature has created a grant program to assist chicken farmers in the commonwealth whose flocks were destroyed due to the highly pathogenic avian influenza or HPAI.  According to the Record Online, the Pennsylvania Legislature created the HPAI Recovery Reimbursement Grant Program to provide $25 million to poultry farmers  and agriculture secretary Russell Redding said the funds  will help poultry farmers regain a foothold after not having any income for months.  Twenty percent of the nation’s avian influenza testing was completed in Pennsylvania laboratories.

HERSHEY SAYS THEY ARE READY FOR HALLOWEEN

Hersheyfoods has issued a statement that there aren’t any anticipated shortages of Halloween candy for 2022.  According to a statement released by Hershey Co., they do struggle with supply issues over cocoa products and supplies from foreign countries effected by the war in Ukraine, but they have planned for it in Hershey and project high single-digit growth for their Halloween and holiday seasons.  Corporate communications from Hershey Co. say Halloween revenue accounts for around 10% of Hershey’s annual sales.

Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully, the longest tenured broadcaster with a single team in pro sports history, died last night. Scully announced for Dodgers fans in Brooklyn and Los Angeles for 67 years. Scully was 94.

VICTIM PULLED FROM SUSQUEHANNA IDENTIFIED

There are still questions surrounding the alleged drowning death of a Danville man who was pulled from the West Branch of the Susquehanna River Saturday night.  According to the Sun Gazette, Lycoming County’s chief deputy coroner identified 39 year old, Tuffy Beachel as the victim who was found about 2 miles south of Muncy Borough. Authorities are asking anyone who spoke with Beachel or knew information about him from Saturday, should call the Coroner’s office (570-327-2305) or Pennsylvania State Police (570-368-5700).

LOYALSOCK TOWNSHIP TEEN MOTHER AND CHILD MISSING

A sixteen year old from Loyalsock Township and her 8 month old baby are missing and State police are asking the public for information on their whereabouts.  State police in Montoursville say Aaliyah Diaz and her child, Nathaniel Ortega Jr reportedly ran away and were reported missing from her home around 10pm Sunday from Randall Circle in Williamsport and could be headed to Allentown. She was last seen wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt and blue sweatpants, and the baby was wearing a green onsie and grey sweatpants.  If you have information call Montoursville State Police.

CONVICTED KILLER RE-SENTENCED

As a result of the Post-Conviction Relief Act , a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that gives inmates who committed murders as teenagers the opportunity to seek parole or a new sentence, a now-36 year old convicted killer was resentenced yesterday. According to North Central PA dot com, Brandon Brown was 15 years old when he kidnapped, raped and killed a 6-year-old neighbor, Jasmine Stoud, in Coal Township in 2001.  He was sentenced to life in prison at age 17.  Yesterday President Judge Charles Saylor convicted and resentenced Brown, as an adult, to a life sentence for first-degree homicide and a consecutive term of 17 to 70 years for rape and kidnapping.  He remains an inmate at SCI-Forest in Marienville, Forest County.

WILLIAMSPORT POOL OPENS AFTER A WEEKEND WAIT

Memorial Pool did reopen yesterday to the public after Mayor Derek Slaughter announced on a Facebook Live post, that tests of the water at the facility came back showing the water was safe for the public to swim.  According to the Sun Gazette, the Memorial pool and Splash Cove pool will be open daily through the rest of the season; noon til one for adult swimmers, then 1 to 7 for public use.

MULTIPLE INJURIES AFTER TWO-VEHICLE CRASH

Six people were sent to the hospital with one transported by life flight after a two vehicle crash near Mifflinburg  in Limestone Township Saturday night.  According to Milton State Police, more than half a dozen crews responded to the area of Mensch Road and Route 104 at about 9:40pm, where victims from both vehicles were trapped.  According to emergency communications in Union County, PennDOT closed Routes 405 and 104 until about 1am Sunday morning.  No word on the conditions of the crash victims today.

MARYLAND MAN WITH A WARRANT DETAINED IN UNION COUNTY

A man with an active warrant against him in Maryland was taken into custody July 21st by Stonington State Police for a domestic disturbance allegedly involving a knife.  According to Shamokin Police, David Raymond Trump gave a false name and resisted arrest when they first responded to a call from a witness who said Trump came after her with a knife before she and two young children hid from the man at a home on South Market street in Shamokin.  Police report Trump, who told them that he didn’t threaten the woman with a knife while standing in front of a wall of knives, was taken to state police barracks where he was positively identified  and held on 10 thousand dollars bail.

POLICE SEEK MAN ATTEMPTING TO LURE CHILDREN

Police are seeking a man who has tried to lure children into his vehicle in New Berlin.  According to State Police in Milton, a white man, driving a gray Volvo sedan, parked his car along the 500 block of Vine Street Friday, July 29th about 5:30pm and tried to make contact with children in the area and tried unsuccessfully to get them to get into the car.  Call PSP Milton at 570-524-2662 if you have any information about the suspect or Friday night’s incident.

In the wake of historic flooding in Eastern Kentucky last week, a group of residents from Clinton County have organized a trip to Hazard, KY, to leave on Sunday, August 7th and are gathering supplies and donations to share with the people affected by the flooding.  According to a Clinton County Firewire post on Facebook, they are accepting donations of travel funds, non-perishable food, household and cleaning supplies, and water today through Sunday the 7th at 3pm.  The Dunnstown Fire Company and the Clinton County Department of Emergency Services in Lock Haven are the locations to drop off supplies.  There are reports of up to 35 deaths from the historical flooding that brought up to 2 inches of rain per hour at the peak of the storms around Lexington.

The  Yankees have acquired right-handed starter Frankie Montas and closer Lou Trivino in a deal with the A’s. Oakland is receiving left-handers Ken Waldichuk and J.P. Sears, right-hander Luis Medina and second baseman Cooper Bowman from New York. Waldichuk, 24, was the fifth-highest-ranked prospect in the Yankees’ farm system.

The Dallas Cowboys will be without wide receiver, James Washington for 6-10 weeks because of a fractured right foot.  He is scheduled to undergo surgery today. Washington suffered the injury Monday in the first padded practice of training camp during seven-on-seven drills, when his foot got caught underneath Trevon Diggs, according to ESPN.
