SHOOTING NEAR PENN COLLEGE SENDS ONE TO JAIL

A shooting involving a Penn College police officer occurred around noon at the 1000 block of Vine Avenue yesterday. The disturbance drew Penn College officers since the location is close to campus.  According to the Sun Gazette, 39 year old Tyree Cleveland who is from Berks County allegedly broke into the apartment, threatening the woman who lived there.  When police arrived, Cleveland was outdoors, disobeyed police and drew his weapon, firing several times, missing the officer but hitting the outside of a Penn College dorm and a police cruiser.  Cleveland fled on foot and  was apprehended at West 4^th and Park Streets.  He was arraigned on felony attempted homicide, aggravated assault, a convicted felon not to possess a firearm and other charges.  He was remanded to Lycoming County Prison on no bail. 

THREE NORTHUMBERLAND RESIDENTS INDICTED IN FEDERAL COURT

Three people from Northumberland County, have been indicted in federal court for charges related to the distribution of controlled substances resulting in death.  According to a press release from the FBI, 36 year old Darryl Elliot of Sunbury, and 34 year old Heather Carper of Northumberland, 34 year old Steven Pierro of Selinsgrove conspired to distribute fentanyl and methamphetamine resulting in the overdose of 38 year old Moses J Fahenstock of Lancaster, PA in a Lewisburg hotel earlier this year.  Penn Live reports that if the group is  found guilty, they face a mandatory minimum prison sentence of 20 years. Carper is free on bail and also faces drug and identity theft charges in Northumberland County.

DCNR LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS

There are two volunteer positions through the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources available on the Trails Advisory Committee for 2023. DCNR is looking for individuals who are creative trail enthusiasts, one to represent h orseback riders and one to represent the members of the committee at large.   The 20-member, DCNR-appointed committee helps develop a statewide land and water trail network to facilitate recreation, transportation, and healthy lifestyles.  The newly appointed volunteers will serve a 3 year term and can submit letters of interest by October 31 to [email protected].

FREE DIABETIC EYE EXAMS THIS MONTH AND NEXT

There will be free diabetic eye exams October  7^th and 21^st and November 11^th, from 1:00 to 4:30 p.m. at the John M. Wenner Building, Williamsport.  UPMC in North Central Pa  says people with diabetes are at risk of developing eye abnormalities that affect their vision, called diabetic retinopathy  and are encouraged to make a free appointment.  Secure an exam by calling 570-326-7850 and mention free diabetic eye exams when scheduling.  A yearly dilated eye exam can help prevent this vision loss in at risk patients.

WOMAN SHOT IN HER FOURTH STREET APARTMENT

A woman in Williamsport was killed by a gunman Wednesday evening in her apartment at the 800 block of West Fourth Street.  According to the Sun Gazette, city police are investigating the scene and developing leads, but there is no known motive for the shooting and the suspect is in police custody.  The Lycoming County Coroner’s office was on the scene yesterday after 6:30pm and assisted with the investigation.  Police say this incident is not related to the other attempted shooting at a Penn College officer that occurred on Vine Avenue in Williamsport earlier on Wednesday.

MAN CHARGED AFTER LYING ON GUN APPLICATION

A Beaver Springs man with a prior domestic violence conviction is facing new felony charges of providing a false statement after lying on an application to buy a gun in Union County.  According to North Central PA dot com, 48 year old Brian Swartzlander attempted to purchase a gun at Wildwood Precision Guns & Ammo in Limestone Township in November of 2020 and also completed forms to transfer a gun to his name stating that he had never been convicted in court of a misdemeanor of domestic violence, however state police at Milton say the application was instantly denied since Swartzlander had served time for  a domestic violence simple assault charge in 2004. He will have a preliminary hearing October 4^th.

MAN ARRESTED FOR MAKING BOMBS IN LOYALSOCK TOWNSHIP

A man who allegedly was building homemade bombs in his Loyalsock Township home was taken into custody yesterday after the nearby neighborhood homes were evacuated and the explosives were removed from the home on Cemetery Street.  According to the Sun Gazette, suspicious devices were seen inside the home just north of Rural avenue and police were alerted.  They had a bench warrant for the occupant of the home and arrived after 10:30am.  Specially trained officers from the Hazardous Devices and Explosives Unit removed the suspicious items including a powder substance and fuses.  The identity of the suspect, who police say did not reside at the home, has not been released, but he is in custody and police are investigating.

ALCOHOL TO BE SERVED AT BEAVER STADIUM

The Penn State Board of Trustees last week, approved the sale of alcohol in Beaver Stadium and it will be available during the home game with Northwestern this Saturday October 1^st.  Patrons will be able to buy beer after obtaining a wrist band, following a scan of their ID by staff. There will be a two 16 oz beer cashless-purchase maximum, with no alcohol being sold after the third quarter, and there will be no alcohol permitted out of the stadium.  Previously, alcohol was only sold in club and suite areas of the stadium and ice arena.

South Carolina State plays South Carolina with a rescheduled  early game @7pm Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, SC

• South Florida’s football game with East Carolina has been moved from Tampa to Boca Raton and will be played at 2:30 p.m. Saturday (ESPN+). That game will be played at Florida Atlantic’s stadium. It had originally been scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.
• University of Cental Florida’s home game against SMU, originally scheduled for Saturday at 3:30 p.m. (ESPNU), has now been rescheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. at FBC Mortgage Stadium in Orlando.
• Officials at Florida State are optimistic that Saturday’s home football game against Wake Forest in Tallahassee will proceed as scheduled. The Seminoles and the Demon Deacons are set for a 3:30 p.m. kick on ABC.

• The NHL‘s Tampa Bay Lightning have postponed preseason games against Carolina on Wednesday and Nashville on Thursday. Those games had been scheduled to be played at Amalie Arena in Tampa.
• The NBA’s Orlando Magic called off practice on what would have been their second day of training camp Wednesday, and said their plans for Thursday were uncertain.

DOMESTIC ARGUMENT ENDS IN INCARCERATION

Two men were involved in an altercation near a cabin in McHenry Township Saturday that led to one to being taken into custody after he fired a handgun at a truck occupied by the other.  According to the Sun Gazette, Tiadaghton Valley Regional police say Darin McCartan, who is from Berks County, was in a truck driven by his father and allegedly attacked him while they drove along Route 414 near Cammal to their cabin property.  McCartan then got out of the truck and fired gunshots in the air and in the direction of the truck which flattened a tire.  Police say they were informed of these incidents after the fact, but arrested McCartan later at an undisclosed location.  He was charged with aggravated and simple assault and is in Lycoming County Prison in lieu of 85 thousand dollars bail.

TWO LYCO PRISON INMATES HAVE DIED THIS MONTH

Two inmates have died at Lycoming County Prison this month.  According to the Sun Gazette, a news release from the Lycoming County Coroner’s Office reports 32 year old Wayne A Hunter III was taken to UPMC Williamsport after a suicide attempt and was pronounced dead September 21^st.  The Lycoming County Commissioners immediately referred the incident to the district attorney’s office.  In another case, inmate 49 year old Joel Kendall was found dead in his cell September 5^th.  Kendall’s cause of death is pending toxicology reports and other testing.

CONTRACTOR CHARGED FOR TAKING MONEY AND NOT WORKING

Another contractor is in trouble for taking the money for a job and not doing the work.  According to the Sun Gazette, 37 year old Tyler Baer of Centre Hall has been charged with misdemeanor theft and receiving stolen property after taking over 17 hundred dollars for a roofing project in Muncy and never completing the job.  Police say Baer has been sent a summons to appear before a district judge but the victim has not heard from him in ten months and there has been no attempt to return the money.

POLICE ARREST MAN WHO SHOT GUN INSIDE HIS HOUSE

A man from Shamokin Dam is facing felony firearms charges after he shot a handgun inside the first floor of his home and later in the basement on September 17^th.  According to State Police, 29 year old Scott Nace initially denied firing a .357 magnum inside the home on Ninth Street, but later confessed and police say he was intoxicated from alcohol.  Nace was charged with three felony counts of discharging a firearm and risking a catastrophe plus other misdemeanors.  He was incarcerated in lieu of 50 thousand dollars bail.

MAN BRANDISHES PROP GUN, FACES CHARGES

Jersey Shore man who pointed a prop gun at a group of people along Railroad St Sunday night has been arrested.  According to the Sun Gazette, police said 23 year old Andrew MacGill had agreed to meet and fight two people, but when there were six people at the location, MacGill allegedly drove past them showing a firearm and left the scene, according to witnesses.  Tiadaghton Valley Region Police obtained a search warrant and found the prop gun from MacGill’s attic.  They took him into custody on charges of terroristic threats and simple assault in lieu of 25 thousand dollars bail.

PA VETERAN’S MONUMENT TO BE REPAIRED AND CLEANED

Potential plans to visit the Pennsylvania Veteran’s Memorial this Veteran’s Day or D-Day could be put on hold since there’s been an announcement that the monument at Fort Indiantown Gap in Annville will be closed 9 months for cleaning beginning October 7^th.  According to the Department of Military and Veteran’s Affairs, the closure will address much needed structural repairs that have come about due to long term exposure to the elements.  The memorial dedicated in 2001 and honors the more than one million men and women who have died in service to our country since World War II.  Tax-deductible donations to the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial Trust Fund can be made online at www.donate.dmva.pa.gov   

PUMPKIN KING LIVES IN WESTMORELAND COUNTY

A man from near Pittsburgh has been crowned the 2022 pumpkin king after winning the record for the heaviest pumpkin at an annual festival in Barnesville, Ohio. According to CBS the pumpkin weighed two thousand four hundred and five pounds, and took Erik Gunstrom from Westmoreland County thirty hours a week to nurture into the winning squash.  The heaviest pumpkin ever grown came from Italy and weighed 2,702 pounds.  Barnesville began holding the competition for the heaviest pumpkin in 1964.

ARMED ROBBERY AT FAMILY DOLLAR

Police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred at the Family Dollar on West Fourth Street in Williamsport Sunday morning.  According to the Sun Gazette, witnesses told police the man who stole cash at gunpoint fled north on Grier Street just after 9am.  Police report he was a black male about 5’9” wearing all black clothing and a skeleton mask.  There were no injuries reported at the scene, police are reviewing store surveillance video after processing the scene yesterday.

MAN ON THE RUN AFTER FATAL SHOOTING AT A BAR

A man from Sunbury is being sought by police after he allegedly shot and killed another man outside a bar on South Third Street early Sunday morning.  According to the Daily Item, an arrest warrant was issued yesterday for 33 year old Randy Easton who witnesses say fled the scene after he and the victim, Joseph Rice had an argument in the parking lot of Laughter’s Bar in which police say led to Rice brandishing a machete and Easton firing three shots one of which struck Rice in the back.  Police are asking anyone with information about Rnady Easton to call Northumberland County 911, He is considered armed and dangerous and will face charges of criminal homicide.

CORONER SEEKS SECURE OFFICE SPACE

The Lycoming County Coroner’s office is on the hunt for property that would enable his office to have sufficient space for performing autopsies, and other services. According to the Sun Gazette, the Lycoming County Commissioners have talked of combining other county offices into a joint location to save funds, but UPMC Susquehanna has stated there is available property appropriate for the coroner’s office that they would consider selling.  However, Lycoming County Coroner Charles Kiessling Jr.  says he wants a more secure location, including the possibility of a location on Arch Street in Newberry.

FUNDRAISING EFFORTS WERE OVER THE EDGE

Almost $99,000 was raised in the 5^th Annual Over The Edge event, at the William Hepburn Apartments on Friday. Approximately 811 donors participated with 67 descenders rappelling down the side of the structure. The money raised goes toward the River Valley YMCA, the YWCA of Northcentral PA and the Williamsport Area School District Education Foundation. Participants contributed or raised at least a thousand dollars to participate. The event also tied in with the UPMC Susquehanna Block Party on Friday evening in downtown Williamsport.

MAN WHO SHOT PIZZA DELIVERY DRIVER IN 2020 SENTENCED

The 19 year old who shot a 14 year-old and wounding a pizza delivery driver in two separate incidents has been sentenced to 4 to 15 years in state prison, following his guilty pleas to aggravated assault and attempted robbery last June.  According to Penn Live, Nigel Staten-Chambers was sentenced in Lycoming County Court by Judge Nancy Butts, who dismissed an attempted homicide charge as part of Staten-Chambers’ plea deal.  The shootings occurred on Market Street and Penn Streets respectively in November of 2020.

CLINTON COUNTY MANHUNT GOES NATIONAL

The hunt for a Clinton County man who allegedly fled the area August 15^th following a warrant issued for his arrest in charges related to the assault of a minor, has now been taken up by national fugitive task forces.  According to North Central PA dot com, Jimmy “Hank” Carlton Henry was charged with second-degree felony aggravated indecent assault, indecent assault of a person less than 13-years-old, and endangering the welfare of children for incidents that occurred in April of 2020 and his whereabouts are still unknown.  If you know anything about Henry or where he is, call Mill Hall Police or the Clinton County Communication Center.

STATE PARKS HOLDING BIRDING COMPETITION

Over 21 State Parks are participating in the 2022 Fall Migration Round-up, a birding competition to see which parks have the most diverse list of bird species through October 2^nd.  According to DCNR, Birders of all levels are invited to come to the parks including Rickett’s Glen and Codorus State Parks to identify birds, and get expert help if you are a novice bird watcher.  The competition grew out of a friendly bet  between Bald Eagle and Prince Gallitzin State parks during the Pandemic and has grown since.  DCNR staff managing the program say birds are sensitive to climate change, habitat loss, and biodiversity loss hope to educate visitors about these realities.

FUNDS RAISED BY WEIS MARKET PROGRAM DONATED

Weis Markets recently donated 100 thousand dollars to the regional food banks in  the state thanks to the in-store fundraising contributions that have gone on through the summer.  According to North Central PA dot com, there was an event at Weis in Linglestown last week to present the donation which was complemented by an additional 25 thousand dollars from Kraft-Heinz, Lactalis and Upfield.  Those funds were added to help Pennsylvania’s dairy farmers and the Feeding PA program.  Food bank officials say milk is one of the most requested item at food banks but one of the least donated due to perishability.  The donations also go in part to their philanthropic hunger prevention effort called Fill A Glass With Hope.

At the Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 500 at Texas motor Speedway Tyler Reddick, one of the first four Cup drivers knocked out of title contention last week, got the checkered flag Sunday after leading 53 of the final 54 laps. FATAL SILO ACCIDENT CLAIMS THREE LIVES

Three people died in a silo accident yesterday after an entrapment emergency happened just after 7am.  According to Penn Live, crews arrived at the Amish farm on Lower Brush Valley Road in Potter Township, Centre County after a 47 year old, 19 year old and 14 year old were reported trapped in a silo on the farm site.  State Police from Rockview say OSHA is being called to the scene, where a teenage boy died 6 months ago in a manure spreading accident.  There are no details at this time on how the three became trapped in the silo. 

FURNITURE COMPANY RESPONDS TO BUNK BED LAWSUIT

Montoursville’s Savoy Contract Furniture has made a statement that they regularly warned little league organizers to use the guard rails, following being named in a civil lawsuit with Little League Baseball Incorporated, for the liability of a player falling from a top bunk without a rail, and suffering a fractured skull during this year’s World Series.  According to the Sun Gazette, Savoy has said their standard procedure of recommending safety measures when lofting the beds was in place and their beds contained warning labels for the use of safety rails.  12 year old Easton Oliverson, the little league player from Utah who fell from the bed and sustained serious brain injuries, has returned home.  His family is seeking more than 50 thousand dollars for his care, as well as punitive damages in a Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas.

KANGAROO SEIZED FROM PA HOME

Pennsylvania Game Wardens seized a 6 month old kangaroo in Littlestown, PA after getting a tip that a person was trying to sell the exotic animal for 5 thousand dollars through a social media post.  According to the Gettysburg Times, police obtained a search warrant and contacted the man who at first denied having the kangaroo, but they searched the property and found the animal wrapped in a blanket and hidden in a closet.  Police say there hasn’t been an arrest announced yet.  In Pennsylvania, it is illegal to possess, import or sell exotic wildlife species without the proper permits.  According to the Game Commission, exotic animal cases they are called to are usually large cats, but this is their first kangaroo case.

LANCERS NAME NEW BASEBALL COACH

The Loyalsock lancers have named one of the program’s most decorated players as their new head coach for the upcoming 2023 baseball season.  According to North Central PA dot com, 2015 graduate and member of both championship teams in 2014 and 2015, Jimmy Webb will take the helm at Loyalsock Township School district  after being an assistant since 2016.  Webb earned a dual degree in business communication and PR at Lock Haven in 2019 while working with the team.  Webb is the only baseball player in Pennsylvania to ever be named to the all-state team four years in a row.

ROAD RAGE LEADS TO ARREST

A Montoursville man is being charged in what police are calling a road rage incident that occurred this summer.  According to the Sun Gazette, police say 59 year old Mark Oeler created a verbal confrontation with another driver on West Third Street after 6:30am on July 29^th after allegedly tailgating the victim on the exit from Route 15 north to west third. Oeler allegedly passed the victim on the double yellow lines, only to be waiting for them in a threatening manner at a local garage.  Police were called and they charged Oeler with terroristic threats, simple assault and disorderly conduct.  He waived his preliminary hearing and is free on 10 thousand dollars bail.

LOCK HAVEN MAN TO HAVE A NON-JURY TRIAL OVER JANUARY 6

A Lock Haven man will face charges this fall in front of a US District of Columbia Judge for his role in breaching the US Capitol Building on January 6^th last year. According to the Sun Gazette, 28 year old Brian Gunderson attempted to have three counts of assault, impeding officers and entering a restricted building, but lawyers cited Gunderson’s social media accounts that clearly showed him inside the capitol building on the day of the insurrection. A judge denied Gunderson’s motions to dismiss and allowed him to be free on his own recognizance until the non-jury trial November 9^th.

PHILLY WOMAN ARRESTED FOR ASSAULT

A 19 year old woman from Philadelphia was arrested after she caused a scene in the Rite Aid on 5^th street in Williamsport on September 7^th.  According to the Sun Gazette, Tiaura Sanya Robinson became irate, throwing an item scanner in the face of a Pharmacist and angrily leaving the store with a ten dollar prescription without paying for it.  Police say Robinson was charged with aggravated and simple assault and disorderly conduct.  She was arraigned Tuesday and released on 25 thousand dollars bail.

ACTIVE SHOOTER DRILL TO HAPPEN NEXT THURSDAY

There will be an active shooter drill next Thursday at the Miller Center in Lewisburg, not today as some reports indicated.  According to coordinators from Evangelical Community Hospital, the Greater Susquehanna YMCA and Geisinger they will test emergency responsiveness next Thursday September 27^th from 10am til 3pm at the Hardwood drive facility which will be closed for the day.  First responders and other organizations will be participating in the drill and the public is being told so they can be aware of the activity and noises that will be taking place next week.  Other law enforcement teams may be responding around the area that same day in response to the drill.

FAMILY OF UTAH LITTLE LEAGUE PLAYER FILES CIVIL SUIT

The family of the Little League Player who fell from his bunk bed during the Little League World Series in Williamsport, leading to a serious head injury, has filed a civil suit for negligence in the Philadelphia court of Common Pleas against Little League Baseball Inc, and Savoy Contract Furniture.  According to the Sun Gazette, Jace and Nancy Oliverson say the two entities are negligent and liable for their son’s injuries since there were no rails on the top bunk bed.  The family seeks in excess of 50 thousand dollars, costs and punitive damages.  According to a social media post by the family, Easton, has just this week, returned to his home after his treatment for the serious skull fracture he suffered in Pennsylvania continued in Utah, his home state.

MAN CHARGED FOR GIVING RENTAL CAR AWAY

A man from Milton gave a rental car away after he had rented it, and the rental company is now pressing charges.  According to North Central PA dot com, Craig Wayne Seese rented a Nissan Frontier on May 31^st and never returned it and was unreachable by Enterprise Rent a Car company employees.  When they reached out to Seese by certified letter, and later by phone when they got no response from the letter, he admitted he had given the car away to a man named “G”.  Seese is now facing felony theft charges and receiving stolen property.

INMATE DIED OF NATURAL CAUSES

The inmate who died in prison September 13^th, was an 82 year old man who passed away from natural causes.  According to North Central pa dot com, Joseph Edward Longo, Jr. was found dead in his cell at 11:30pm at the State Correctional Institution at Coal Township.  The Northumberland County Coroner has notified Longo’s family and reported that no foul play was suspected.  State police did not reveal for what charges Longo had been committed, or how long he had been in Coal Township facilities.

WILLIAMSPORT FALL FEST BLOCK PARTY THIS WEEKEND

There will be a block party focusing on health services and screenings for families in downtown Williamsport, hosted by UPMC Williamsport, September 23^rd .  According to a press release, UPMC will be at the intersection of West Fourth, Hepburn, and West Streets to the intersection of Elmira and West Fourth Streets this Friday from 5 til 9pm .  There will be vendors, food trucks, and live music along with representatives from community organizations, and kids zones with activities and games. MAN CHARGED WITH CHILD ABUSE AFTER SHAKING BABY

A 23 year old Williamsport man is in custody after medical professionals discovered a 7 week old baby in his care suffered head and spinal trauma injuries consistent with child abuse.  According to the Sun Gazette, Ezra Buckman admitted to state police that he shook the child out of frustration on September 14^th while the baby’s mother was at work.  Geisinger medical officials treated the baby and reported the abuse to authorities.  Lycoming County Children and Youth are assisting with the investigation and Buckman is incarcerated at the Lycoming County Prison with no bail.

MAN WHO CAUSED SOUTHSIDE LOCKDOWN CASE HELD FOR COURT

A judge in Williamsport has ruled that there is enough evidence to hold the man who caused a lockdown of the South Williamsport School District September 7^th, for court.  According to the Sun Gazette, Joshua Orso’s father is the person who called police the day Orso threatened his wife after being served a protection from abuse order that same day.  The elder Orso had the impression that his son was going to cause a scene at the school, but Joshua was never on the school grounds that day.  Fifty three year old Orso was released from Lycoming County Prison on the modified 50 thousand dollars bail after being jailed from the terroristic threat charges on no bail.

PA GROCERY STORE ELIMINATING PLASTIC BAGS

The Williamsport Wegmans is among the 18 stores in Pennsylvania that will be removing single use plastic bags from their stores Thursday in an effort to use fewer fossil fuel products.  According to the Sun Gazette, the store will encourage customers to bring reusable bags, but paper bags will be available for a five cent charge, each.  The funds raised from paper bag sales will be donated to each store’s local United Way.  Renovations will continue at the Williamsport Wegmans through October according to a corporate spokesperson, who said the beer and wine department will move to the center of the store at that time.

MIFFLINBURG TURKEY TROT REGISTRATION OPEN

The holidays aren’t too far away, if people are registering for the 12^th Annual Turkey Trot in Mifflinburg.  The 5k will be held Thanksgiving morning 2022.  According to a press release from the Herr Memorial Library, funds raised from the Mifflinburg Turkey Trot, will benefit the library as well as the Mifflinburg Area High School Boys Lacrosse Team.  Register before October 29^th and get a T-Shirt.  The run begins at 9am at the Mifflinburg Community Park, 131 N. 5^th Street.  Registration will begin Thanksgiving morning, November 24^th at 7:30am.  – Buffalo Bills cornerback Dane Jackson suffered a head and neck injury and was taken off the field on a stretcher and ambulance last night during the game against the Tennessee Titans.   Jackson went to Erie County Medical Center for a CT scan and X-rays, but the team reports he does have full movement in his arms and legs.  Jackson was a seventh-round draft pick by the Bills in the 2020 NFL draft.
