FATAL ACCIDENT IN PERRY COUNTY

A man from Northumberland County died in a single-vehicle accident on Route 11 Wednesday around 7:30am.  According to State police at Newport sau 44 year old Keith Krieger of Herndon was driving near the Route 322 West exit ramp in Watts Township when he hit a guide rail, went airborne and struck a tree.  The Perry County Coroner declared Krieger dead at the scene. 

FIREARMS CHARGES AGAINST JERSEY SHORE MAN DROPPED

Charges have been dropped against a Jersey Shore man who police believed had ammunition and firearms illegally.  According to the Sun Gazette, Tiadaghton Valley Regional Police discovered boxes of bullets at the Smith Street property of 36 year old Robert Seese,  and filed a misdemeanor  charge of possession of firearms or ammunition, since court records indicated there was an amended PFA for him prohibiting his use and owning of firearms.  However, Seese was never served the new amended order and investigators have withdrawn the case. 

PA LAWMAKERS VOTE TO IMPEACH KRASNER

The first Pennsylvania Senate impeachment trial in almost 30 years is set to take place after lawmakers in the Commonwealth voted to impeach Democrat District Attorney Larry Krasner 107-85.  Philadelphia voters reelected Krasner last year and he is not accused of breaking the law, rather he is under fire for failure to prosecute some minor crimes, bail request policies, staff oversight and reports him inadequately handing communication with crime victims amid rising crime in the city.  According to the Philadephia Inquirer, lawmakers have only removed two officials — both of them judges — through impeachment: the first in 1811 and state Supreme Court Justice Rolf Larsen in 1994.

BALLOONFEST TO TAKE A HIATUS

Balloonfest is taking a break.  According to a social media post by the committee of Balloonfest, Air Show and So Much More, the annual event that takes place at the Lycoming County Fairgrounds has planned hiatus for 2023.  Balloonfest is expected to return in 2024  after a time to regroup, grow and improve the event.  According to the Sun Gazette, organizers say two things that led to the decision is the need for more volunteers and rising costs. Those interested in joining the Balloonfest committee is encouraged to reach out.

WATSONTOWN WOMAN REAR ENDS SNOWPLOW ON ROUTE 15

A Watsontown woman crashed into a snow plow earlier this week while it was being operated along Route 15 in Monroe Township.  According to Selinsgrove State Police before 6pm on Tuesday, 62 year old Melanie Wallace attempted to pass the plow that was being driven by 55 year old Shane Fawver of Mount Pleasant Mills, when snow obstructed her view, she ran into the back of the plow.  Wallace was treated at Evangelical Community Hospital. The driver of the plow was not injured.

NEW YORK MAN AQUITTED IN LYCOMING COUNTY COURT

A New York man being tried in Lycoming County for 20 counts of sexual assault charges that a minor-family member alleged, has been acquitted.  According to North Central PA dot com, court records indicated   Casey Lewis Guyer was accused of the assault that occurred in Muncy Borough between July or August of 2019 but the prosecution had no physical evidence such as text messages or photos.  A 12 member jury deliberated for about an hour and found that there wasn’t enough evidence to prosecute Casey Lewis Guyer, declaring him not guilty.  He had been free on bail since June 2021.

WILLIAMSPORT SUBMITS A NO-INCREASE BUDGET PROPOSAL

A 28.6 million dollar zero-tax increase budget was presented in Williamsport Wednesday during a City Council work session.  According to the Sun Gazette, Mayor Derek Slaughter and a contracted finance advisor from Harrisburg, gave to Council an assessment of the budget as well as estimates about the current financial climate after working through audits, time constraints, and in some cases lack of reconciliation from the last 4 years. The Capital Projects budget is being integrated into general operations and the information technology budget which was normally part of the general fund, has been moved into City Hall Operations.A second work session will be held for Williamsport City Council Monday at 7pm.

GRANTS AVAILABLE TO BUILD EV CHARGING STATIONS IN PA

PennDOT introduced a program recently that supports the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, helping to make Electric Vehicle charging more accessible to all Americans.  According to the Sun Gazette, The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Formula Program will make available 170 million dollars to grant recipients in Pennsylvania who apply to host direct current fast chargers at ideal business locations along the interstates to support longer distance travel.  Information on NEVI is available at PA.gov.  Recipients are responsible for a 20 percent match when awarded the grant. DELAYS FOR SOME SCHOOLS AFTER AREA’S FIRST WEATHER EVENT

Penn DOT has restored speeds on local highways after the weather yesterday slowed traffic in many areas around the state.  Temperatures this morning have risen above freezing and there are no more reports of major problems along the secondary roadways or interstates. Some schools implemented a two hour delay this morning in North Central PA.

MONTGOMERY MAN ARRESTED FOR ASSAULT

After a domestic incident at a river lot campground in Montgomery, a man was been jailed for allegedly pushing the woman involved, who was holding an infant.  According to the Sun Gazette, police say 31 year old Delbert Hayes of 125 S. Main Street was intoxicated and pushed and assaulted his significant other on October 28^th, who with the baby, ended up on the floor before fleeing to a vehicle outside. Police say the woman called 911 after being assaulted again outside their camper.  Hayes has been charged with felony endangering the welfare of a child and simple assault and was taken to Lycoming County Prison, but has been released on 25 thousand dollars bail.

TROOPERS JUSTIFIED IN SHOOTING OF MASS SHOOTER IN JORDAN TWP

Preliminary findings were released on the fatal shots fired by troopers November 5^th in Jordan township after a mass shooting near Unityville, and Distirct Attorney Ryan Gardner deemed  the officers justified in firing the shots that killed 54 year old Brian Taylor.  Taylor allegedly had shot his wife Linda Taylor, his sister, Andrea Meek who lived nearby, and a friend from Lebanon County who was visiting, 55 year old Jerry Zehring, that Saturday morning before traveling along Route 239 on an ATV and firing shots at cars and other cabins.  According to the Sun Gazette, the Lycoming County coroner said he has conducted toxicology tests on Taylor, but results will not be available for a few months.

LOYALSOCK TEACHER NOMINTED FOR GRAMMY

The Fine Arts Coordinator at Loyalsock Township School District has been recognized with a nomination for The Grammy’s 2023 Music Educator Award.  According to the Sun Gazette, Ryan Bulgarelli who is a Penn State Graduate teaches instrumental music, guitar, music technology, and directs the school’s bands and ensembles.  He has been with Loyalsock Township for 13 years.  Bulgarelli was chosen as one of 25 teachers nationwide – and the only educator nominated from Pennsylvania. The finalists will be announced in December.

TWO-STORY SHED BURNS IN PICTURE ROCKS

As a result of a fire that destroyed a shed near Picture Rocks, the woman who rented the property was also injured trying to save animals from the burning structure.  According to the Sun Gazette, Picture Rocks and Hughesville firefighters responded to the blaze at 472 Pine Tree Road and got the fire under control in about 20 minutes.  The unidentified victim of the fire declined treatment for her hands initially at the scene.  Fire officials said they stayed into the afternoon to control hot spots that sprung up.  An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, and no estimates on the damage done have been released.

THEFTS OF PA SKILL GAMES AT LOCAL LAUNDROMATS

Police are investigating a rash of thefts that have occurred at laundromats in which suspects are breaking into and stealing from Games of Skill machines.  According to North Central PA dot com, State police said the most recent theft occurred Monday at Lexie’s Laundry on Route 522 in Snyder Township when the suspects took cash from the machine and used it to obtain cash out tickets.  They say similar thefts have occurred in Union and Northumberland counties.  If you have information, please call State Police at Selinsgrove 570-374-8145.

PA LIBERTARIANS MAINTIAN PARTY STATUS AFTER MIDTERMS

After the midterm elections in Pennsylvania, the Libertarian party status is set, as the legislative candidates of the party received more votes than any other previous midterm election.  According to North Central PA dot com, for the first time in 20 years they received at least 2% of the vote in at least 10 counties and will maintain party status as determined by PA election law.  The two most prominent Libertarian candidates running in Pennsylvania were Erik Gerhardt for U.S. Senate and Matt Hackenburg for Governor.

REMAINS OF PENNSYLVANIA WWII SOLDIER IDENTIFIED

The remains of a World War II soldier from Pennsylvania who was killed during an ambush in France in 1945, have been identified.  According to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, scientists did DNA and dental analysis and determined the unidentified body to be that of 25 year old Pfc Francis Martin of Scranton. Martin was killed when German forces attacked a truck convoy he was in, and his along with 37 other sets of remains were disinterred and analyzed for identification.  Martin’s name is on the Walls of the Missing at a cemetery in France where a rosette will be placed since Martin is now accounted for.

DANVILLE ANNOUNCES REMOTE LEARNING FRIDAY AFTER THREAT

There will be no in-person instruction today for staff and students at Danville Area Schools after a threat was received Thursday afternoon around 4pm.  According to the Daily Item, Thursday afternoon activities were cancelled and Friday moved to a flexible instruction day due to the non-building specific threat that was received at the High School.  Acting Superintendent Harry Mathias said the threat is being investigated by school officials and they are following some leads.

LOCK HAVEN MAN GUILTY IN JANUARY 6 TRIAL

A Lock Haven man was found guilty for his role in the insurrection at the Capitol building in Washington DC on January 6^th 2021.  According to Penn Live, 28 year old Brian Gundersen could be sentenced to up to 28 years in prison for charges of corruptly obstructing an official proceeding and assaulting or impeding officers.  The prosecution provided photographic evidence of Gundersen in the Capitol on several instances of entering the capitol by force and him confronting police who had riot shields.  Sentencing is scheduled for January 27^th 2023.

NEW COMPENSATION POLICY FOR COUNTY WORKERS

A new compensation policy has been approved 2 to 1 by the Lycoming County Commissioners for County employees and many could see a significant pay increase based on their level of experience and education.  Tony According to the Sun Gazette, officials from the county’s human resources department say new rates and a 3.5 percent across the board raise brings one pay scale to the county employees, and eliminates the previous part-time scale previously used – it will be the same for full and part timers.  The new increases are set to take effect January 1^st and will add 1.3 million dollars to the payroll.

SHERIFF’S OFFICE WARNS OF NEW PHONE SCAMS

There’s another phone scam going around in our area and the Lycoming County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning to not provide any credit card information to perpetrators impersonating people from the Sheriff’s Office.  According to a news release, the caller will tell the recipient that there is a warrant out for their arrest and that they can pay fines over the phone.  The scammers then take the victim’s personal and financial information.  If you receive any of these calls document them and notify the Lycoming County Sheriff at 570-327-2280.

PERMIT APPLICATION FOR FLY ASH FACILTY WITHDRAWN

The business owner who applied for a permit to have a fly ash facility in the Milton Borough has withdrawn his application after Wednesday’s conditional use hearing at the Milton Borough Council meeting. According to North Central PA dot com, the discussion was contentious discussing the potential environmental damage that could come from a fly ash facility – one that ultimately the DEP indicated would not be permitted.  Mr. Milton LLC withdrew his application before public comment could take place.  The board has 45 days to address the permits for other uses of the facility, including as a bus terminal and as a solar panel distribution center.

VANDALISM CASE AT MILTON TURNED OVER TO POLICE

The case of student athletes from Selinsgrove allegedly vandalizing the new 15 million dollar facility at Milton Area School District has been turned over to Milton Police department.  In separately released statements this week, Milton and Selinsgrove schools addressed the vandalism; with Selinsgrove downplaying the damage and asking for a bill from their host.  Milton officials investigated and photographed damage at the facility and say it should have been treated with respect. Milton officials say the incident has also been reported to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association.

NEW PHONE SYSTEM FOR SHIKELLAMY

A new upgraded phone system is expected to be installed in classrooms at Shikellamy School District to allow for more private communications and more efficient handling of emergency situations. According to the Daily Item, during Wednesday’s board meeting, Superintendent Jason Bendle told the board the 65 thousand dollar upgrade is worth the money and if approved, can be installed in the 2023-24 school year.  The upgraded phone lines will make it easier for teachers, administrators and police to communicate if necessary.  The board said they will take action on the approval of the upgrade next month.

PIAA PLAYOFF TICKETS AVAILABLE ONLINE

Tickets will not be sold at the games for the PIAA State Soccer tournament quarterfinal rounds on Saturday. Those who want to attend any of the games must purchase tickets through the PIAA website – PIAA.org through a link on the top of the page. Semifinal round games are slated for next Tuesday, Nov. 15 – and state finals in all classifications either Friday the 18 or Saturday the 19.  Tickets for all upcoming games are $8 plus processing fees and – again – must be purchased on the PIAA web site – not at the games.

PA SENATE SEAT FLIPS WITH A PROJECTED FETTERMAN WIN

The Associated Press has called the race in Pennsylvania with Democrat John Fetterman projected to win the white-hot Senate race in the commonwealth with 50.9% percent of the vote and 88% of precincts reporting.  Also projected to win in Pennsylvania is Democrat Attorney General Josh Shapiro for Pennsylvania Governor with 55 percent of the vote and 87 percent of the precincts reporting at this hour.  That does not reflect the choices of Lycoming County voters who chose Dr. Mehmet Oz over John Fetterman with 67.49% of the vote.  In Lycoming County for Governor, Mastriano defeated Josh Shapiro locally with 64.37% of the vote.   For Congressional seats in Lycoming County, In the Ninth district, Dan Meuser defeated Amanda Waldman and the 15th district Glenn Thompson defeated Mike Molesevich. Representative in the 84th district Joe Hamm and Jamie Flick of the General Assembly 83rd District both ran unopposed and according to the Sun Gazette, Hamm and Flick greeted voters on Election Day outside of Hepburn Township Volunteer Fire Company and at the Loyalsock Township building respectively.

LUZERNE COUNTY EXTENDED POLLS WHEN BALLOTS RAN OUT

They ran out of paper ballots in Luzerne County and a court-order allowed voters there to have extra time to submit the ballots last night.  According to WNEP, election officials sought the court order Tuesday afternoon when regular voting process was interrupted by paper shortage and voting machine malfunctions around the midday.  Polls there were ordered to stay open until 10pm when they normally close at 8pm.

TRUCK DRIVER SENTENCED 40-80 YEARS FOR MURDER OF MODEL

The Texas truck driver who was accused of murder in the case of the New York City model whose body was found along the road along I-80 in western Union County in February of 2021, has been sentenced to 40 to 80 years in prison.  According to PennLive, court records say 30 year old Tracy Ray Rollins Jr shot Rebecca Landrith 26 times and her body was left in a snowbank at the Mile Run interchange of I-80.  Rollins had pleaded guilty in September to third-degree murder and 20 counts of abuse of corpse.  The chief public defender Brian Ulmer told the court his client accepted responsibility for the death of Landrith.

RIVER KEEPERS HOLDING THIRD ANNUAL SONG CONTEST

The Middle Susquehanna Riverkeepers Association developed the “Songs of the Susquehanna” competition two years ago to engage the public about the river during the uncertainty of COVID, and since that time they’ve chose two volumes of original music written by entrants to celebrate the Susquehanna.  Another competition has begun this year and the announcement for a track list of Volume 3 will be compiled after mp3 or wav submissions are featured on the website through February 2023.  Those who want to write a song for  “Songs of the Susquehanna”, find submission requirements at middlesusquehannariverkeeper.org.

PA AND LYCOMING COUNTY  ELECTION RESULTS SUMMARY

Voters in Pennsylvania flipped the hotly-contested US Senate seat to blue with a projected win for John Fetterman over Dr. Mehmet Oz, and Democratic candidate for Governor Josh Shapiro held on for the Democrats over Doug Mastriano despite his popularity across the rural regions of Pennsylvania.  Republicans maintained their seats in Congress with incumbent Dan Meuser defeating Amanda Waldman in the 9^th District and incumbent Glenn Thompson defeating Mike Molesevich in the 15^th district.  Unofficially, voter turnout seemed to be higher than the last midterm election, averaging at about 65 percent.

COLUMBIA COUNTY CANDIDATE PASSES MONDAY

Ed Giannattasio, the democratic candidate for Columbia County’s 109th district, passed away Monday after a lengthy battle with Multiple Myeloma, a type of bone marrow cancer.  Giannattasio was to face off against Republican nominee Robert Leadbeter for the House seat after Representative David Millard vacated his seat this year by retiring. The Columbia County Pa Democrats issued a statement in support of his family, confirming Giannattasio passing and thanking all who voted in the spirit of what Ed stood for, free and fair elections and protection of our fundamental rights.

SOME ELECTION SNAGS BUT NO INTIMIDATION REPORTED

There were a handful of election issues in a few counties according to Acting Secretary of State Leigh Chapman with a few precincts that opened late, some had power outages, some areas of Luzerne County ran out of paper ballots and at least one experienced a gas leak – there were no reported incidences of voter intimidation at this time.  According to the Daily Item, Chapman says that it will take a few days for unofficial results from the midterm general election to be completed. The deadline for unofficial results is November 15 and the deadline for the certified official results is November 28. The delays are caused by the mail-in voting system in Pennsyvania of which, over 1.4 million ballots have yet to be counted.  Chapman said 1 million were returned from Democrats and about 303,000 from Republicans.

NO JAIL FOR MAN CONVICTED OF TAX FRAUD

A Cogan Station man will avoid jail time after a US Middle District judge gave him probation on a criminal tax evasion charge.  According to Penn Live, Devon T Buck cashed checks from customers of his landscaping business and diverted the money into personal accounts between 2015 and September 2017. Assistant US Attorney acknowledged the defense’s argument that Buck’s attempted to work out a settlement with the IRS before being compliant with the law over the fraud.  Buck who is a father of two young children received two years probation and was fined three thousand dollars for failing to report over 720 thousand dollars in gross receipts.  The IRS may still impose a civil penalty on Buck.

CAREGIVER GAMBLES WITH TODDLER IN THE CAR

The caregiver of a toddler has been charged in Union County for allegedly leaving the child in her running car when she gambled at a gas station in Lewisburg on numerous occasions.  According to North Central PA dot com, a witness called police when 50 year old Christa Bingaman was in the store and had left the child alone at least 10 minutes in October.  Troopers said the parents of the 1 and a half year old called police to press charges.  Bingaman was charged with endangering the welfare of children and summary of leaving a child unattended, her preliminary hearing is November 17^th.

TWO FLOOD-PLAIN HOMES SET FOR COUNTY BUYOUT

Two homes in the Muncy borough are potentially in line for a buyout for being in a flood-prone area of Lycoming County.  According to the Sun Gazette, during their meeting this week, the Muncy Borough Council entered an into an agreement with the county to buy out the houses on North Washington Street and Mechanic Street near Glade Run, which are two of seven that FEMA are considering for future buyouts as well.  Members of council noted that families live in six of the seven flood-prone homes and the two to be bought are particularly prone to flooding.

ADA COMPLIANT POLLING PLACE POSSIBLE AT WASD

The Williamsport Area School District School Board called using their facilities as a polling place in the future in an effort for elections to be ADA compliant, an unfunded mandate. According to the Sun Gazette, during the school board meeting this week, County Commissioner Scott Metzger and director of Voter services, Forrest Lehman, were present in front of the board to discuss the funding and logistics of using the schools by the public on Election Days.  Superintendent Dr. Timothy S. Bowers says unknown security risks and other issues could be a distraction at the school.  33 of 67 counties already use schools as polling sites.  The discussion did not come to a vote at the board meeting this week.

SUSPECT IN CUSTODY FROM MONTOUR COUNTY FIRE

Police have taken a person into custody for arson after a fire destroyed a Montour County Home last night.  According to state police, the fire marshal was called around 5pm to R and H Avenue, near Narehood Road in Mooresburg.  Property record state the property is owned by John, Cynthia and Kelli Young.  Five fire separtments were called to the scene but police have not released any more information about the fire or the suspect.

MORE FELONIES FOR COGAN STATION MAN CAUGHT IN LOYALSOCK

The man who was apprehended from a Loyalsock home after being there unauthorized and then found to have materials to make explosive devices, has been charged with two felonies.  According to the Sun Gazette, Steve Guthrie of Cogan Station was charged with possessing weapons of mass destruction and criminal trespassing after police took him into custody at a home on the 900 block of Cemetery Street.  State troopers trained to deal with explosives had to remove the evidence from the home.  Police say Guthrie violated terms of his bail from a previous felony charge including sexual assault of a child, he has been returned to Lycoming County Prison in lieu of an additional 50 thousand dollars bail.

$400K AWARDED FOR PINE SQUARE IMPROVEMENTS

Four hundred thousand dollars has been earmarked for the Pine Square improvement project that Senator Gene Yaw says will attract more economic growth in the city of Williamsport. According to a press release from the senator’s office, the investment made possible by the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program will help develop a live-work-play complex close to Trade and Transit II which will have an upgraded space that will be level with a bandshell, fencing signage and lighting.  Mayor Slaughter thanked Governor Wolf and Senator Yaw for making the award possible by working for the funding in Harrisburg.

NEW HYBRID COASTER AT HERSHEY PARK FOR 2023

It’s the time of year when Hershey park announces what’s on the way for the next season and according to Hersheypark.com the amusement park will unveil the all-new Wildcat’s Revenge  2023. One of 15 coasters already at Hersheypark, the wood and steel hybrid coaster will make its debut 100 years after the first Wild Cat ride opened at the Park.  The all-new steel track will add unique elements to the existing frame, according to the news release.  The hybrid coaster features maximum speeds of 62 miles per hour and four inversions, including the World’s Largest Underflip.
