DANVILLE ANNOUNCES REMOTE LEARNING FRIDAY AFTER THREAT
There will be no in-person instruction today for staff and students at Danville Area Schools after a threat was received Thursday afternoon around 4pm. According to the Daily Item, Thursday afternoon activities were cancelled and Friday moved to a flexible instruction day due to the non-building specific threat that was received at the High School. Acting Superintendent Harry Mathias said the threat is being investigated by school officials and they are following some leads.
LOCK HAVEN MAN GUILTY IN JANUARY 6 TRIAL
A Lock Haven man was found guilty for his role in the insurrection at the Capitol building in Washington DC on January 6th 2021. According to Penn Live, 28 year old Brian Gundersen could be sentenced to up to 28 years in prison for charges of corruptly obstructing an official proceeding and assaulting or impeding officers. The prosecution provided photographic evidence of Gundersen in the Capitol on several instances of entering the capitol by force and him confronting police who had riot shields. Sentencing is scheduled for January 27th 2023.
NEW COMPENSATION POLICY FOR COUNTY WORKERS
A new compensation policy has been approved 2 to 1 by the Lycoming County Commissioners for County employees and many could see a significant pay increase based on their level of experience and education. Tony According to the Sun Gazette, officials from the county’s human resources department say new rates and a 3.5 percent across the board raise brings one pay scale to the county employees, and eliminates the previous part-time scale previously used – it will be the same for full and part timers. The new increases are set to take effect January 1st and will add 1.3 million dollars to the payroll.
SHERIFF’S OFFICE WARNS OF NEW PHONE SCAMS
There’s another phone scam going around in our area and the Lycoming County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning to not provide any credit card information to perpetrators impersonating people from the Sheriff’s Office. According to a news release, the caller will tell the recipient that there is a warrant out for their arrest and that they can pay fines over the phone. The scammers then take the victim’s personal and financial information. If you receive any of these calls document them and notify the Lycoming County Sheriff at 570-327-2280.
PERMIT APPLICATION FOR FLY ASH FACILTY WITHDRAWN
The business owner who applied for a permit to have a fly ash facility in the Milton Borough has withdrawn his application after Wednesday’s conditional use hearing at the Milton Borough Council meeting. According to North Central PA dot com, the discussion was contentious discussing the potential environmental damage that could come from a fly ash facility – one that ultimately the DEP indicated would not be permitted. Mr. Milton LLC withdrew his application before public comment could take place. The board has 45 days to address the permits for other uses of the facility, including as a bus terminal and as a solar panel distribution center.
VANDALISM CASE AT MILTON TURNED OVER TO POLICE
The case of student athletes from Selinsgrove allegedly vandalizing the new 15 million dollar facility at Milton Area School District has been turned over to Milton Police department. In separately released statements this week, Milton and Selinsgrove schools addressed the vandalism; with Selinsgrove downplaying the damage and asking for a bill from their host. Milton officials investigated and photographed damage at the facility and say it should have been treated with respect. Milton officials say the incident has also been reported to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association.
NEW PHONE SYSTEM FOR SHIKELLAMY
A new upgraded phone system is expected to be installed in classrooms at Shikellamy School District to allow for more private communications and more efficient handling of emergency situations. According to the Daily Item, during Wednesday’s board meeting, Superintendent Jason Bendle told the board the 65 thousand dollar upgrade is worth the money and if approved, can be installed in the 2023-24 school year. The upgraded phone lines will make it easier for teachers, administrators and police to communicate if necessary. The board said they will take action on the approval of the upgrade next month.
PIAA PLAYOFF TICKETS AVAILABLE ONLINE
Tickets will not be sold at the games for the PIAA State Soccer tournament quarterfinal rounds on Saturday. Those who want to attend any of the games must purchase tickets through the PIAA website – PIAA.org through a link on the top of the page. Semifinal round games are slated for next Tuesday, Nov. 15 – and state finals in all classifications either Friday the 18 or Saturday the 19. Tickets for all upcoming games are $8 plus processing fees and – again – must be purchased on the PIAA web site – not at the games.
