PA SENATE SEAT FLIPS WITH A PROJECTED FETTERMAN WIN

The Associated Press has called the race in Pennsylvania with Democrat John Fetterman projected to win the white-hot Senate race in the commonwealth with 50.9% percent of the vote and 88% of precincts reporting.  Also projected to win in Pennsylvania is Democrat Attorney General Josh Shapiro for Pennsylvania Governor with 55 percent of the vote and 87 percent of the precincts reporting at this hour.  That does not reflect the choices of Lycoming County voters who chose Dr. Mehmet Oz over John Fetterman with 67.49% of the vote.  In Lycoming County for Governor, Mastriano defeated Josh Shapiro locally with 64.37% of the vote.   For Congressional seats in Lycoming County, In the Ninth district, Dan Meuser defeated Amanda Waldman and the 15th district Glenn Thompson defeated Mike Molesevich. Representative in the 84th district Joe Hamm and Jamie Flick of the General Assembly 83rd District both ran unopposed and according to the Sun Gazette, Hamm and Flick greeted voters on Election Day outside of Hepburn Township Volunteer Fire Company and at the Loyalsock Township building respectively.

LUZERNE COUNTY EXTENDED POLLS WHEN BALLOTS RAN OUT

They ran out of paper ballots in Luzerne County and a court-order allowed voters there to have extra time to submit the ballots last night.  According to WNEP, election officials sought the court order Tuesday afternoon when regular voting process was interrupted by paper shortage and voting machine malfunctions around the midday.  Polls there were ordered to stay open until 10pm when they normally close at 8pm.

TRUCK DRIVER SENTENCED 40-80 YEARS FOR MURDER OF MODEL

The Texas truck driver who was accused of murder in the case of the New York City model whose body was found along the road along I-80 in western Union County in February of 2021, has been sentenced to 40 to 80 years in prison.  According to PennLive, court records say 30 year old Tracy Ray Rollins Jr shot Rebecca Landrith 26 times and her body was left in a snowbank at the Mile Run interchange of I-80.  Rollins had pleaded guilty in September to third-degree murder and 20 counts of abuse of corpse.  The chief public defender Brian Ulmer told the court his client accepted responsibility for the death of Landrith.

RIVER KEEPERS HOLDING THIRD ANNUAL SONG CONTEST

The Middle Susquehanna Riverkeepers Association developed the “Songs of the Susquehanna” competition two years ago to engage the public about the river during the uncertainty of COVID, and since that time they’ve chose two volumes of original music written by entrants to celebrate the Susquehanna.  Another competition has begun this year and the announcement for a track list of Volume 3 will be compiled after mp3 or wav submissions are featured on the website through February 2023.  Those who want to write a song for  “Songs of the Susquehanna”, find submission requirements at middlesusquehannariverkeeper.org.

PA AND LYCOMING COUNTY  ELECTION RESULTS SUMMARY

Voters in Pennsylvania flipped the hotly-contested US Senate seat to blue with a projected win for John Fetterman over Dr. Mehmet Oz, and Democratic candidate for Governor Josh Shapiro held on for the Democrats over Doug Mastriano despite his popularity across the rural regions of Pennsylvania.  Republicans maintained their seats in Congress with incumbent Dan Meuser defeating Amanda Waldman in the 9^th District and incumbent Glenn Thompson defeating Mike Molesevich in the 15^th district.  Unofficially, voter turnout seemed to be higher than the last midterm election, averaging at about 65 percent.

COLUMBIA COUNTY CANDIDATE PASSES MONDAY

Ed Giannattasio, the democratic candidate for Columbia County’s 109th district, passed away Monday after a lengthy battle with Multiple Myeloma, a type of bone marrow cancer.  Giannattasio was to face off against Republican nominee Robert Leadbeter for the House seat after Representative David Millard vacated his seat this year by retiring. The Columbia County Pa Democrats issued a statement in support of his family, confirming Giannattasio passing and thanking all who voted in the spirit of what Ed stood for, free and fair elections and protection of our fundamental rights.

SOME ELECTION SNAGS BUT NO INTIMIDATION REPORTED

There were a handful of election issues in a few counties according to Acting Secretary of State Leigh Chapman with a few precincts that opened late, some had power outages, some areas of Luzerne County ran out of paper ballots and at least one experienced a gas leak – there were no reported incidences of voter intimidation at this time.  According to the Daily Item, Chapman says that it will take a few days for unofficial results from the midterm general election to be completed. The deadline for unofficial results is November 15 and the deadline for the certified official results is November 28. The delays are caused by the mail-in voting system in Pennsyvania of which, over 1.4 million ballots have yet to be counted.  Chapman said 1 million were returned from Democrats and about 303,000 from Republicans.

NO JAIL FOR MAN CONVICTED OF TAX FRAUD

A Cogan Station man will avoid jail time after a US Middle District judge gave him probation on a criminal tax evasion charge.  According to Penn Live, Devon T Buck cashed checks from customers of his landscaping business and diverted the money into personal accounts between 2015 and September 2017. Assistant US Attorney acknowledged the defense’s argument that Buck’s attempted to work out a settlement with the IRS before being compliant with the law over the fraud.  Buck who is a father of two young children received two years probation and was fined three thousand dollars for failing to report over 720 thousand dollars in gross receipts.  The IRS may still impose a civil penalty on Buck.

CAREGIVER GAMBLES WITH TODDLER IN THE CAR

The caregiver of a toddler has been charged in Union County for allegedly leaving the child in her running car when she gambled at a gas station in Lewisburg on numerous occasions.  According to North Central PA dot com, a witness called police when 50 year old Christa Bingaman was in the store and had left the child alone at least 10 minutes in October.  Troopers said the parents of the 1 and a half year old called police to press charges.  Bingaman was charged with endangering the welfare of children and summary of leaving a child unattended, her preliminary hearing is November 17^th.

TWO FLOOD-PLAIN HOMES SET FOR COUNTY BUYOUT

Two homes in the Muncy borough are potentially in line for a buyout for being in a flood-prone area of Lycoming County.  According to the Sun Gazette, during their meeting this week, the Muncy Borough Council entered an into an agreement with the county to buy out the houses on North Washington Street and Mechanic Street near Glade Run, which are two of seven that FEMA are considering for future buyouts as well.  Members of council noted that families live in six of the seven flood-prone homes and the two to be bought are particularly prone to flooding.

ADA COMPLIANT POLLING PLACE POSSIBLE AT WASD

The Williamsport Area School District School Board called using their facilities as a polling place in the future in an effort for elections to be ADA compliant, an unfunded mandate. According to the Sun Gazette, during the school board meeting this week, County Commissioner Scott Metzger and director of Voter services, Forrest Lehman, were present in front of the board to discuss the funding and logistics of using the schools by the public on Election Days.  Superintendent Dr. Timothy S. Bowers says unknown security risks and other issues could be a distraction at the school.  33 of 67 counties already use schools as polling sites.  The discussion did not come to a vote at the board meeting this week.

SUSPECT IN CUSTODY FROM MONTOUR COUNTY FIRE

Police have taken a person into custody for arson after a fire destroyed a Montour County Home last night.  According to state police, the fire marshal was called around 5pm to R and H Avenue, near Narehood Road in Mooresburg.  Property record state the property is owned by John, Cynthia and Kelli Young.  Five fire separtments were called to the scene but police have not released any more information about the fire or the suspect.

MORE FELONIES FOR COGAN STATION MAN CAUGHT IN LOYALSOCK

The man who was apprehended from a Loyalsock home after being there unauthorized and then found to have materials to make explosive devices, has been charged with two felonies.  According to the Sun Gazette, Steve Guthrie of Cogan Station was charged with possessing weapons of mass destruction and criminal trespassing after police took him into custody at a home on the 900 block of Cemetery Street.  State troopers trained to deal with explosives had to remove the evidence from the home.  Police say Guthrie violated terms of his bail from a previous felony charge including sexual assault of a child, he has been returned to Lycoming County Prison in lieu of an additional 50 thousand dollars bail.

$400K AWARDED FOR PINE SQUARE IMPROVEMENTS

Four hundred thousand dollars has been earmarked for the Pine Square improvement project that Senator Gene Yaw says will attract more economic growth in the city of Williamsport. According to a press release from the senator’s office, the investment made possible by the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program will help develop a live-work-play complex close to Trade and Transit II which will have an upgraded space that will be level with a bandshell, fencing signage and lighting.  Mayor Slaughter thanked Governor Wolf and Senator Yaw for making the award possible by working for the funding in Harrisburg.

NEW HYBRID COASTER AT HERSHEY PARK FOR 2023

It’s the time of year when Hershey park announces what’s on the way for the next season and according to Hersheypark.com the amusement park will unveil the all-new Wildcat’s Revenge  2023. One of 15 coasters already at Hersheypark, the wood and steel hybrid coaster will make its debut 100 years after the first Wild Cat ride opened at the Park.  The all-new steel track will add unique elements to the existing frame, according to the news release.  The hybrid coaster features maximum speeds of 62 miles per hour and four inversions, including the World’s Largest Underflip.

MOTHER ACCUSED OF STARVING DAUGHTERS PLEADS GUILTY

The mother of the two young girls who died from starvation and were buried in a shallow grave in Hepburn township, has plead guilty to conspiracy to commit first degree murder and theft by deception charges on fraudulently collecting county assistance for the girls after they had died.  According to the Sun Gazette, 33 year old Marie Sue Snyder agreed to the guilty plea after the Lycoming County District Attorney initially filed notice to seek the death penalty.  Snyder also agreed to provide testimony in the trial of former girlfriend Echo Butler over her role in the death of 6 year old Nicole Elizabeth and 4 year old Jasmine Jean Snyder.  Snyder has been offered a sentence of two consecutive prison terms without parole and over 130 thousand dollars in fines.

OVERNIGHT THIEF IN CUSTODY

A Williamsport man has been arrested for breaking into Lycoming County stores and stealing merchandise.  According to the Sun Gazette, police say 27 year old Donald Jared Parsons stole cigarettes, liquor, cash and other items from three Williamsport businesses Thursday morning along Hepburn Street, Memorial Avenue and Basin Street.  Parsons was observed on surveillance video breaking and entering the stores and when police questioned him later at his home, he admitted the theft and produced the stolen items for police. He was charged with burglary, criminal trespass theft and receiving stolen property.

LOCAL MAN CONFIRMED FOR THE BOARD OF PSSHE

A Williamsport man has been confirmed to serve as a member of the Board of Governors for Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education.  According to the Sun Gazette, CEO of The Liberty Group Daniel Klingerman, who was involved during the integration of the state system of universities this past year, will be a part of a 20 member board that  coordinates the operation of the State Education System, overseeing its’ efficient management.

NON-PROFITS RAISE FUNDS FOR AMISH FAMILY

Several non-profit agencies in Centre County are holding a fundraiser for the Amish family who lost four family members this year in farming accidents.  According to the Sun Gazette, a GoFundMe page has been set up to support Esther Beiler and her six children after a son died in a farm equipment accident last March, and her husband and two other tennage sons perished in a silo accident in September.  All deaths were ruled accidental.  The Happy Valley Adventure Bureau and the Chamber of Business & Industry of Centre County are hoping to raise 20 thousand dollars for the family.

SUNBURY FIRE VICTIMS IDENTIFIED

It was a young mother and her three year old who died in the three-alarm fire in Sunbury Saturday afternoon, another family member was rescued from a second story window of the home.  According to the Standard-Journal, the bodies of 23 year old Abby Anstey and her three year old, Brayden were found in a second floor bedroom at the 300 block of Walnut Street.  60 year old Edgar Perez who resided there and was in a wheelchair, was rescued by a passersby who used a ladder to get him.  Fire officials say the three alarm blaze began in the kitchen area of the home at 334 Walnut and spread to two other homes, which brought all Sunbury and Northumberland fire units as well as over a dozen other companies. The fire was under control by 6:30pm.  First responders from Northumberland, Montour and Snyder counties also assisted.

MAN HIT BY CAR ON ROUTE 11/15, IN CRITICAL CONDITION

A Middleburg man was hit by a car along Route 11/15 in Snyder County Sunday while he crossed where there was no signal or crosswalk.  According to Selinsgrove state police, 66 year old Thomas Bernat Jr was transported to Geisinger Medical center with life-threatening injuries after being struck while crossing the highway in the area of the Turkey Hill Minute mart in Monroe Township. Media outlets say Geisinger officials listed Bernat in critical condition as of yesterday.

REDISTIRCT MAPS WILL NOT BE CHALLENGED IN COURT

The case challenging the redistricting of Pennsylvania’s State House and Senate District maps after the 2020 census will not be heard by the United States Supreme Court.  According to WHTM, Pennsylvania House Majority Leader Kerry Benninghoff had argued the process was unconstitutional, but members of the Legislative Reapportionment Commission said they are confident that the districting plans comply with both state and federal law and the US Supreme Court upheld it.  In March the justices allowed maps selected by each state’s Supreme Court to be in effect for the 2022 elections. 

BUCKNELL STRIVES TO BE PREMIER EMPLOYER

In an attempt to complete an initiative to become a premiere employer in the region, Bucknell University has announced that they will give employees the full week off at Thanksgiving this year.  According to a statement by University President, John Bravman the traditional time off for employees, Wednesday through the weekend is now including November 21^st and 22^nd this year.  There is also a two-week winter break scheduled for 2023 this year.  Details at Bucknell.edu.

TWO PA AMBER ALERTS CANCELLED

Both Amber alerts that were active yesterday in Pennsylvania have been cancelled with all the children involved found safe.   Two toddlers who were seen being forced into a car in Dauphin County near Harrisburg earlier this week were located and no details have been reported about their alleged abductor.  According to authorities however, 6 year old Zoe Moss was taken from her school neighborhood near Downingtown Monday by her biological mother, Venessa Gutshall.  According to Penn Live, they were spotted numerous times near Wrightsville in York County and police recovered the child safely Thursday afternoon after responding to witness accounts. 

PA SUPREME COURT WILL CONSIDER BALLOT QUESTION

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has taken up the issue of counting ballots with a missing or incorrect date on the outer envelope, after briefs were filed by senior elections officials arguing the matter.  The filing was scheduled last week so that State and national Republican Party representatives could dispute the counting of incorrectly dated ballots, with Department of State officials under Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf also filing brief arguing that the requirement to count the date is an immaterial error or omission.  According to Fox News, the PA Supreme Court will rule soon without holding oral arguments on the matter.

GAS COMPANY TO START WORK IN DUBOISTOWN NEXT WEEK

Next Wednesday, Duboistown residents can expect a gas main replacement project to begin on Euclid Avenue between Clarendon Street and Spring Street.  PennDOT is reporting that a contractor for UGI will be working in the area with alternating lanes for traffic when active work is going on, and residents may see the intermittent work being done through this December during the day.  You can check conditions on major roadways in the Commonwealth at 511PA.com.

GENERAL ELK SEASON STARTS MONDAY

General elk season starts on Monday, and ends Saturday, Nov. 5 in Pennsylvania.  According to the Pennsylvania Game Commission, General Elk season remains the biggest in th area in terms of participation, with more than half of available elk licenses being allocated.  This year, 101 of the 178 Pennsylvania elk licenses are valid next week. Of those, 31 hunters will be hunting antlered elk, or bulls, and 70 will be hunting antlerless elk, or cows.  Following completion of the general elk season, 48 hunters will participate in late season that runs from December 31 through January 7.

FEMALE INMATES RELOCATED FOR STAFFING SHORTAGE

Twelve female inmates from the Lycoming County Prison have been transferred away from the facility due to staffing shortages.  According to Penn Live, the move is a way to redistribute overtime hours within the prison system.  According to the Sun Gazette, the Lycoming County Commissioners upped the pay for starting correctional officers to 20 dollars an hour to improve retention; ten part-time positions were also approved by the commissioners to alleviate some mandatory overtime some officers face at some facilities.  Even if current hires happen, there is still time to wait to increase staffing due to the required training period. 

HANGAR TO BE CONSIDERED IN SELINSGROVE

A plan to  add a new hangar at the Penn Valley Airport in Selinsgrove will go up before the Monroe Township planning commission in November.  According to the Daily item, construction could start in the spring to meet demand that has the current facility full with a wait list for aircraft storage.  The cost of the project is estimated to be up to 400 thousand dollars with expenses offset with a 100 thousand dollar contribution from the Greater Susquehanna Valley Chamber.  

CLEAN SCHOOL BUS FUNDING FOR PA

Lycoming, Potter and Tioga Counties are benefitting from a recent US Environmental Protection Agency Clean School Bus Program rebate competition, and will be able to purchase clean school busses thanks to the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.  According to the Sun Gazette, the clean vehicles will be low- and zero-emission school buses that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save money for school districts and produce cleaner air.  US Senator Bob Casey of Scranton recently announced that eighty nine new busses will be purchased throughout the state with about 34 million dollars of the federal funds.

NORTHERN LEG OF CSVT PROJECT COMPLETE

PennDOT has announced the completion of the northern section of the CSVT project.  According to a statement from the agency, long-term lane restrictions are being lifted on Route 147 in Point Township, Northumberland County, but motorists can still expect some occasional short-term lane closures as the final details of the highway are completed. The southern  section of the CSVT is under construction currently and is expected to have that work continue through 2027.

7 drivers will be searching for a chance to win a spot in the NASCAR Cup Series Championship Four in the final race of the Round of 8.  Joey Logano secured one of the four positions at Las Vegas. No playoff contenders won last week at Homestead-Miami, so three championship spots are available Sunday.

THREE TEENS CHARGED WITH ARMED ROBBERY IN WILLIAMSPORT

A couple were robbed at gunpoint and fired upon late Monday afternoon at the 11-hundred block of Market Street in Williamsport and three teenagers have been taken into custody after a short search around the scene of the crime.  According to the Sun Gazette, 19 year old Nyreese Turner, 16 year old Aajujuan Johnson and a 13 year old juvenile, all of Williamsport, who police say each have a criminal history fled from the scene.  The three demanded money and possessions from the victims who ran away when shots were fired in their direction.  Police say they may be seeking a fourth suspect involved with the two teens who have been arraigned on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges and jailed with no bail.  Police say the juvenile suspect will be petitioned into court on similar charges.

SECOND FIRE IN 8 DAYS IS SUSPICIOUS

The state Fire marshal is investigating in Hepburn Township after a fire yesterday morning was at the same property as the barn that was destroyed in a fire last week.  According to the Sun Gazette, volunteer firefighters were called back to 1708 Rose Valley Road at 4am where the home at the property was engulfed in flames.  There were no injuries, police say the residents were not home at the time.  It was declared under control after 5:15 and the fire marshal has opened a case, since the cause was undetermined in the barn fire that had occurred October 17^th at the same address.

VICTIM IN I-80 CRASH IDENTIFIED

The man killed in the tractor trailer accident Sunday I-80 east in Union County has been identified.  According to the Daily item, police say 70 year old Thomas K. Loner, of Coburn Centre County was hauling milk around 12:15pm when his vehicle drifted off the south shoulder, striking a guardrail, and overturning in a ditch about four miles west of  the Route 15 exit to White Deer.  He was pronounced dead at the scene. Another car, driven by 58 year old Cheryl-Anne Harte of New Wales in the eastbound lane, was struck by Loner before the truck went off the road.  Harte was not injured.

LYCOMING COLLEGE NAMES STADIUM FOR HEAD COACH

Lycoming College has named their stadium for their longtime head football coach, Frank Girardi at a ceremony Tuesday at the college.  According to North Central PA dot com, the unveiling included Lycoming dignitaries, coaches, former and current players, and numerous family members of the coach.  The former head coach was with th team from 1972 until 2007 and has been recognized for many accolades as well as winning 257 games, two national championship games, and for being a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. The Lycoming Warrior football team will play its home games on David Person Field at Girardi Stadium beginning in 2023.

BED MAKER JOINS LITTLE LEAGUE IN SUIT

Local furniture manufacturer, John Savoy and Son Inc. of Montoursville and Little League International have joined together to request the dismissal of the suit filed by the parents of the Utah Little League player who was seriously injured when he fell from his bunk at the Little League World Series in August.  The defendants say the suit requires more specific allegations of negligence in order to prepare a defense.  They also have joined to request the venue of the case be moved to Lycoming County, it is currently in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas and seeks damages in excess of 50 thousand dollars.

WOMAN REQUIRED TO GIVE UP MEDICAL CARD AFTER MISDEMEANOR

A woman from Lycoming County who allowed a child playing at her house with her daughter, to eat a marijuana laced Rice Krispy Treat she made in the home,was charged with disorderly conduct and was required to surrender her Pennsylvania Marijuana Medical Card.  According to North Central PA dot com, 42 year old Heather Ann Smith pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor charge in District Court and will serve 6 months’ probation. Charges of endangering the welfare of a child were dismissed, but Smith had to provide her fingerprints at the conclusion of the hearing.  This is the first time a Lycoming County resident has had to give up a medical card after an arrest.

LAWYER FOR FORMER DA WANTS DUI DISMISSED

Lawyers for former PA Attorney General Kathleen Kane are seeking to have her DUI case dismissed after they say the prosecution could not present sufficient evidence supporting the case.  According to the Standard Journal, the Times Tribune of Scranton says Kane’s attorney wants the court to disallow Kane’s field sobriety results and video of her drinking at a bar prior to an accident last March 12^th in Scranton.  That DUI arrest led to Kane’s probation violation of her 2016 conviction from leaking secret investigative files as Attorney General to embarrass a rival prosecutor and lying about it.  Kane was sentenced to two months to a year, but was directly paroled to a residential alcohol treatment center.

FARMERS CAN PROVIDE THEIR LAND FOR PROFIT

Farmers interested in retaining the ownership of their farm while realizing an income from the property, can apply to participate in the Agricultural Land Preservation Program in Lycoming County. According to the Sun Gazette, through a combined state/county purchase, farmers can submit an application for the use of their entire parcel of land if they have 50 acres or more, made up of at least 50 percent crop or grazing land or pasture.  Deadline to Apply is October 31^st with a $50 processing fee for each application.  For information call 570-433-3003.
