WATSONTOWN MAN CHARGED WITH DUI

A twenty year old man from Watsontown has been charged with a DUI and more after being found under the influence of a controlled substance with a toddler in the car.  According to court records, Watsontown police arrested 20 year old Dakota Lowry for an incident that occurred October 24th at the 100 block  of Main Street in Watsontown.  There is an investigation ongoing, but charges against Lowry were filed in District Court.

DELIVERY DRIVER ASSAULTED

A pizza delivery driver was assaulted by two women in October and the two suspects are facing first-degree felonies as well as other charges.  According to police, witnesses confirmed that they recognized Brianna Marie Ortega and Alyssa Paul as the assailants who allegedly cut the delivery person off in traffic and then argued with the victim at the 500 block of South Market Street in Shamokin before the altercation.  The victim required hospitalization with a broken finger, broken nose, and a concussion after Ortega and Paul punched and body slammed her to the ground. The two have preliminary hearings December 13th. 

PA LAWMAKERS GETTING RAISE BECAUSE OF INFLATION

As a result of inflation, Pennsylvania lawmakers are getting a salary increase for 2023.  According to the Sun Gazette, Salaries across the board will rise 7.8%, a figure tied by state law to the yearly change in the consumer price index published by the U.S. Department of Labor for mid-Atlantic urban areas.  It is the largest year-over-year inflationary increase for mid-Atlantic urban areas in October since 1981. Rank-and-file lawmakers will see almost 103 thousand dollars a year with the additional $7,400 dollar increase. The Legislature’s highest paid officers, the House speaker and Senate president pro tempore, will make more than 160 thousand dollars a year up over 11 thousand.  Gov.-elect Josh Shapiro will make almost 230 thousand dollars.

FUNDRAISING RALLY FOR GILSON SNOW

Rusty Rail Brewing Company, a longtime partner with Gilson Snow, will be holding a rally this Sunday from 2 til 6 to help the ski and snowboard manufacturer rebuild from the devastating fire that occurred November 18th.  The rally is free to attend and will feature live music, and a variety of opportunities to support the Gilson team. A portion of proceeds from the sale of each beer during the rally will support the Gilson team and their families as Gilson designs, builds, and works to open their new shop.

PEDESTRIAN STRUCK ON RIVER AVENUE

A pedestrian was struck near the Weis Market on River Avenue last evening around 5pm.  According to the Sun Gazette, an ambulance was called to the area north of East Third Street and transported the unnamed woman who was struck to UPMC Williamsport.  The person who police say was driving the Toyota Camry that struck the first woman, was also being evaluated at the scene for distress and anxiety.  State police were called in to investigate the accident and River Avenue was closed to through traffic.

WOMAN CAUSES DISTURBANCE CHARGED WITH DUI

A 36 year old woman from Williamsport is facing DUI and other charges after her erratic behavior caused a clerk at a smoke shop in South Williamsport to call police.  According to the Sun Gazette, Amy Lynn Tedesco caused a disturbance at Smokers Express November 11th and left in a rage, breaking the store’s door off its hinges, doing donuts in the parking lot in her 1997 Volvo before leaving the property and abandoning the car a few blocks away on Southern Avenue.  Police responding to the call, apprehended Tedesco and took her to the borough police headquarters where in addition to the DUI, she was charged with criminal mischief, disorderly conduct and harassment.  She is incarcerated in liue of 10 thousand dollars bail.

NEW RECORD SYSTEM  FOR EVANGELICAL

Evangelical Community Hospital is transitioning to a new electronic medical record system beginning December 4th, 2022.  According to IT administrators at the hospital,  patients are reminded that they will need to transition their own information from the previous “Follow My Health” patient portal to the MyChart online portal,  since the previous system will be inaccessible after the new software, called  “Epic”, goes live.  Epic Information Management will make access to essential medical information seamless across all departments and has been ranked the top electronic health records system for 12 years.

YOUNGER DRIVERS STATISTICALLY IN CRASHES FOR DRINKSGIVING

PennDOT has introduced a new term and they are warning people about what it means.  The night before Thanksgiving is becoming known as Drinksgiving, named for the number of impaired crashed that occur involving  young adults returning home to visit with family and high school friends at bars the night before the holiday.  According to PennDOT, in the past five years in Pennsylvania, there were 138 drivers involved in fatal crashes on Thanksgiving eve and 44% of those impaired driving crashes involving drivers between 21and 24.  They recommend creating a plan before the party starts; like having a sober friend drive, calling a cab, Uber or Lyft.

WASD TEACHER ACQUITTED ON UNLAWFUL CONTACT CHARGES

A Williamsport Area geometry teacher was found not guilty last Friday on all charges of sexual misconduct with two former female students after jurors deliberated three hours.  According to the Sun Gazette, the lawyer for the defense said there was no evidence to support the allegations against 43 year old Christopher Yoder, and that the jury was to determine the truths of the case.  Yoder was acquitted of unlawful contact with a minor, criminal use of a communications device, endangering the welfare of children.  He faces an upcoming second trial on charges that include statutory and institutional sexual assault.

NO MORE EMERGENCY SURGERIES AT GEISINGER JERSEY SHORE

Geisinger Medical Center in Jersey Shore will no longer be performing emergency surgeries such as appendectomies once it was determined that there is lack of need since zero to four surgeries of that kind are performed there a month.  According to Penn Live, hospital administrators say those who require those surgeries will be stabilized and transported to Geisinger Muncy or another appropriate acute care hospital.  Elective surgeries will still be available in Jersey Shore and the new decision does not impact any staff at the Jersey Shore facility.

PA WOMAN ACCUSED OF STEALING LAPTOP FOUND GUILTY

The Harrisburg woman who federal prosecutors said stormed the Capitol on January 6th and stole Nancy Pelosi’s laptop with the intention of selling it to the Russians, was found guilty Monday, of six federal counts, including civil disorder.  According to  WGAL, the jury for Riley June Williams’ case was deadlocked on two other charges, including “aiding and abetting the theft” of the laptop and obstruction of an official proceeding. Williams was taken into custody after the proceeding and will be sentenced in February.

BEAR HUNTING NUMBERS DOWN FROM PREVIOUS YEARS

Weekend bear hunting in the Commonwealth has yielded less so far than other years past in Pennsylvania, but 831 bears were brought in Satuday and Sunday, with the 4 day season continuing until sunset today.  According to the Pennsylvania Game Commission, one thousand four hundred and fifty bear had been taken prior to November 19th.  Lycoming County is among the top bear-producing counties for this season at 114, topped only by Tioga with 139.  One bear taken in Lycoming County this year weighed 747 pounds.  An extended bear season will run Nov. 26 through Dec. 3 in most of the state.

ARMED ROBBERY SUSPECT IN HUGHESVILLE STILL AT LARGE

Police are still seeking a suspect in an armed robbery that happened Friday in Hughesville.  According to the Sun Gazette, a man, who was caught on surveillance cameras entered the CITCO on Main Street in Hughesville and gave the cashier a note demanding money and showing a gun.  State police said the clerk put money into a bag the thief provided before fleeing the scene on foot north, toward Railroad street.  Police say the suspect was about 5’10”,  between 20 and 30 years old wearing a light colored sweatshirt with blue lettering down the sleeve.  If you have information on the robbery, call Pennsylvania State police. 

INVESTIGATION OPENED INTO MISSING AUTISTIC TEEN CASE

An investigation is continuing into the circumstances surrounding the missing autistic teenager who was found safe in Lock Haven on Friday night.  Police and community members searched yards and sheds for the boy who had gone missing without a shirt or shoes and had only a blanket for warmth.  According to the Record online, the 17 year-old, whose identity the police have not released, was reported missing Thursday, sparking a manhunt around the Lock Haven and authorities want to know more about what led to him going missing and exactly when he was safely found. 

PENN DOT WORKING ON I-180 TODAY

A Maintenance project may slow you down on I-180 westbound in Muncy Creek Township.  According to PennDOT,  a crew will be out today performing bridge deck patching beginning at around 9am.  The right lane is expected to be restricted at the Route 405 interchange – which is exit 13.  Drivers are asked to slow down in the work zone and be alert for flaggers.  If you need to know about travel delays or restrictions check out PennDOT’s 511pa.com 24/7.

FARM SHOW ADDS MARKETING AWARD COMPONENT FOR 2023

Pennsylvania’s direct farm businesses are invited to participate in a new competition at the farm show starting this year.  According to the PA Agriculture Secretary, businesses can enter new PA Farm Show Agriculture Marketing Contest by submitting a presentation of their websites, marketing brochures and social media.  Entry deadline to showcase your businesses’ part in the Commonwealth’s 132.5 billion dollar farming industry is December 1st .  You can find information on the Farm Show website –  farmshow.pa.gov – under Department 36, Agriculture marketing.

WOMAN CHARGED FOR SELLING IMAGES OF CHILDREN ONLINE

Williamsport Bureau of Police arrested a Williamsport woman after she allegedly sexually abused three young children, and sold the images online. According to Northcentralpa.com, Jennifer Louise Whelan is facing multiple felony charges of trafficking and abuse of children as young as 6. Police reported they were contacted by West Virginia authorities, with a suspect in custody after photos and videos were collected between December 2021 through October 2022. Whelan is being held at Clinton County Correctional Facility with no bail with a formal arraignment coming up November 28 in Lycoming County.

MISSING AUTISTIC BOY FOUND IN LOCK HAVEN

The 17-year-old boy who went missing Thursday near the Lock Haven YMCA was located after a massive search by community members and law enforcement. According to Northcentralpa.com, the Clinton County Sheriff’s Department reported the autistic boy missing at 7 pm on Thursday and said he had no shirt or shoes – only a blanket.  Police said after many were out looking in neighborhoods and searching areas of the river, he was found late Friday night .

The plan awaits a final signature by a judge, but the Roman Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg has submitted plans to pay an over 18 million dollar settlement to survivors of clergy child sex abuse though a Survivor Compensation Trust into which settling insurers will also contribute.  According to WHTM, the Dioceses, which currently consist of 89 parishes across 15 counties, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in February 2020 after  there were 54 proofs of claim from clergy abuse survivors.

LOCAL COMPANY RURAL HEALTH PROGRAM OF THE YEAR

Congratulations to the East Lycoming Ambulance Association of Hughesville, for being named as the Rural Health Program of the Year for 2022. According to social media, Lisa Davis, director of the state Office for Rural Health and Outreach Associate Professor of Health Policy and Administration at Penn State recognized the Associations’ creativity, innovation and their 20-year cooperative effort between four volunteer fire departments —Hughesville, Muncy Area, Picture Rocks and Muncy Township.

MAN ARRESTED FOR HAVING GUNS WHILE ON PROBATION

A man under probation was taken into custody in early November after a domestic disturbance brought law enforcement to his Turbotville home and they found weapons.  According to North Central PA dot com, State Police at Milton requested to search the  home of 43 year old Thomas Lee Smith where there was a sawed-off shotgun and hunting rifle.  Smith had also been in possession of a handgun without a concealed carry permit.  He was committed to Northumberland County jail in lieu of 40 thousand dollars bail, with a preliminary hearing December 7.

WOMAN CHARGED WITH LYING ON FIREARM APPLICATION

Another person has been charged for lying on an application for a firearm at Berwick Sporting goods store.  According to North Central PA dot com, 31 year old Kelsey Horkey falsely filled out the form that was checked for previous felony convictions, crimes that could have resulted in up to a year in jail, domestic violence charges, or a mental health commitment.  According to court records, Horkey has not been arrested previously in Pennsylvania.  She has a preliminary hearing December 12 in District Court.

SUNBURY FIRE DEPARTMENTS HEADING TOWARD CONSOLDATION

The City of Sunbury and all six of its fire departments are working toward the end goal of consolidation, combating their lack of volunteers. As reported by the Daily Item, City Council went to the state Department of Community and Economic Development for a consolidation feasibility report, which supported the needs of the city. Consolidation means the six volunteer fire departments will have a central location and combined resources. Mayor Josh Brosious reported the city hopes to see it complete by the end of 2023.

PENNDOT AMONG SOME STATE OFFICES THAT ARE CLOSED

Most state offices will be closed this Friday after the Thanksgiving holiday.  According to a press release by PennDOT, they announced that all driver license and photo centers, including its full-service center in Harrisburg, will also be closed However, customers can still get all forms and driver training manuals, as well as to pay driver license or vehicle insurance restoration fee; driver license and photo ID duplicates online  24 /7 through their Vehicle Services website,   dmv.pa.gov.

FATAL ACCIDENT IN PERRY COUNTY

A man from Northumberland County died in a single-vehicle accident on Route 11 Wednesday around 7:30am.  According to State police at Newport sau 44 year old Keith Krieger of Herndon was driving near the Route 322 West exit ramp in Watts Township when he hit a guide rail, went airborne and struck a tree.  The Perry County Coroner declared Krieger dead at the scene. 

FIREARMS CHARGES AGAINST JERSEY SHORE MAN DROPPED

Charges have been dropped against a Jersey Shore man who police believed had ammunition and firearms illegally.  According to the Sun Gazette, Tiadaghton Valley Regional Police discovered boxes of bullets at the Smith Street property of 36 year old Robert Seese,  and filed a misdemeanor  charge of possession of firearms or ammunition, since court records indicated there was an amended PFA for him prohibiting his use and owning of firearms.  However, Seese was never served the new amended order and investigators have withdrawn the case. 

PA LAWMAKERS VOTE TO IMPEACH KRASNER

The first Pennsylvania Senate impeachment trial in almost 30 years is set to take place after lawmakers in the Commonwealth voted to impeach Democrat District Attorney Larry Krasner 107-85.  Philadelphia voters reelected Krasner last year and he is not accused of breaking the law, rather he is under fire for failure to prosecute some minor crimes, bail request policies, staff oversight and reports him inadequately handing communication with crime victims amid rising crime in the city.  According to the Philadephia Inquirer, lawmakers have only removed two officials — both of them judges — through impeachment: the first in 1811 and state Supreme Court Justice Rolf Larsen in 1994.

BALLOONFEST TO TAKE A HIATUS

Balloonfest is taking a break.  According to a social media post by the committee of Balloonfest, Air Show and So Much More, the annual event that takes place at the Lycoming County Fairgrounds has planned hiatus for 2023.  Balloonfest is expected to return in 2024  after a time to regroup, grow and improve the event.  According to the Sun Gazette, organizers say two things that led to the decision is the need for more volunteers and rising costs. Those interested in joining the Balloonfest committee is encouraged to reach out.

WATSONTOWN WOMAN REAR ENDS SNOWPLOW ON ROUTE 15

A Watsontown woman crashed into a snow plow earlier this week while it was being operated along Route 15 in Monroe Township.  According to Selinsgrove State Police before 6pm on Tuesday, 62 year old Melanie Wallace attempted to pass the plow that was being driven by 55 year old Shane Fawver of Mount Pleasant Mills, when snow obstructed her view, she ran into the back of the plow.  Wallace was treated at Evangelical Community Hospital. The driver of the plow was not injured.

NEW YORK MAN AQUITTED IN LYCOMING COUNTY COURT

A New York man being tried in Lycoming County for 20 counts of sexual assault charges that a minor-family member alleged, has been acquitted.  According to North Central PA dot com, court records indicated   Casey Lewis Guyer was accused of the assault that occurred in Muncy Borough between July or August of 2019 but the prosecution had no physical evidence such as text messages or photos.  A 12 member jury deliberated for about an hour and found that there wasn’t enough evidence to prosecute Casey Lewis Guyer, declaring him not guilty.  He had been free on bail since June 2021.

WILLIAMSPORT SUBMITS A NO-INCREASE BUDGET PROPOSAL

A 28.6 million dollar zero-tax increase budget was presented in Williamsport Wednesday during a City Council work session.  According to the Sun Gazette, Mayor Derek Slaughter and a contracted finance advisor from Harrisburg, gave to Council an assessment of the budget as well as estimates about the current financial climate after working through audits, time constraints, and in some cases lack of reconciliation from the last 4 years. The Capital Projects budget is being integrated into general operations and the information technology budget which was normally part of the general fund, has been moved into City Hall Operations.A second work session will be held for Williamsport City Council Monday at 7pm.

GRANTS AVAILABLE TO BUILD EV CHARGING STATIONS IN PA

PennDOT introduced a program recently that supports the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, helping to make Electric Vehicle charging more accessible to all Americans.  According to the Sun Gazette, The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Formula Program will make available 170 million dollars to grant recipients in Pennsylvania who apply to host direct current fast chargers at ideal business locations along the interstates to support longer distance travel.  Information on NEVI is available at PA.gov.  Recipients are responsible for a 20 percent match when awarded the grant. WOMAN ARRESTED FOR RECKLESS DRIVING IN NEIGHBORHOOD

A woman from Williamsport has been charged with first-degree misdemeanor terroristic threats, recklessly endangering another person, and other traffic offenses, for nearly hitting two adults and a child.  According to North Central PA dot com, court records say neighbors yelled at 28 year old Ameerah Yasmine Blackwell to slow down as she drove past the home at the 600 block of Wilson Street on October 20th. Police say Blackwell initially got out of her car and yelled back, then reversed and proceeded to come back around on Wilson driving fast witnesses say almost onto the sidewalk.  Police discovered Blackwell was driving with a suspended license without insurance.  She was taken into custody with no bail listed and will have a preliminary hearing December 8th.

DANVILLE FILES CHARGES WITH DA ABOUT THREATENING LETTER

The identity of the person who wrote the threatening letter last Thursday that forced Danville Area Schools into a flexible learning day Friday, was identified by the school officials and is now known by local police.  According to the Daily Item, beyond saying the person is a student and that there are charges filed with the district attorney, the new Danville Area Superintendent, Molly Nied, did not release any more information about the suspect.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT BUDGET PASSED WITH NO INCREASE

South Williamsport’s proposed 2023 budget, previously recommended by the administration, was passed this week, preserving the current tax rate with no property tax increase.  According to the Sun Gazette, Borough manager Steven Cappelli said the balanced budget is 2.63 million plus dollars for police, codes enforcement, as well as public works.  The proposed details of the budget are available for public review at 329 West Southern Avenue at the South Williamsport Borough Office.

SUSPECT WHO SOLD STOLEN BIKE CAUGHT

A Williamsport man is free on bail after being charged for selling a stolen motorcycle to a New York State resident last Spring.  According to the Sun Gazette, Joseph Newman faces felony receiving stolen property after police say he obtained a stolen bike that had been reported missing from a barn in Liberty in early February.  Court records say Newman sold the bike for just over 2 thousand dollars,  it has since been recovered.

MAN WHO POSED AS FIREFIGHTER CHARGED

Charges against the man from Sunbury who police allege posed as a firefighter and revealed deaths of two fire victims to family without being authorized, have been held for court in Northumberland County.  According to the Daily Item, fire crews say they saw 39-year-old Michael Stahl at the scene of the deadly fire that happened in October at the 300 block of Walnut Street in Sunbury, working the fire without being a member of any fire department.  Stahl denied talking to any victims’ families, and says he is trained as a firefighter.  Stahl faces felony risking a catastrophe and theft as well as a misdemeanor charge of impersonating a public servant.

ANNUAL RACE COMING BACK TO PA

Williamsport has been chosen as the host city for the Endless Mountains Adventure race in June of 2023.  According to the Sun Gazette, this is the second year that Adventure racing has come to Pennsylvania. Last year, Clarion hosted 32, 2 to 4 person teams who competed against each other in a five-day course by foot, bike and boat using a map and compass. The course has the racers collect checkpoints along the way while focusing on teamwork, athletic skill and navigational strategy.  The Endless Mountains Adventure Race is part of Philadelphia’s Rootstock Racing which directs adventure races around the Commonwealth.

CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS PARADE TOMORROW

Backyard Broadcasting joins in the fun when Santa comes to Downtown Williamsport for the Children’s Magical Christmas Parade tomorrow, that parade starting off at 4th and Market and going to 4th and Elmira.  Be sure to join Santa and Mayor Derek Slaughter when they turn on the holiday lights on The Green after the parade, on the corner of Hepburn and West Fourth Streets.  Children will be able to see and talk with Santa during that time.  The National Weather Service says there’s a chance of snow Friday afternoon and the temperatures will be very cold into Friday night – down to the 20s for the forecasted low.

DELAYS FOR SOME SCHOOLS AFTER AREA’S FIRST WEATHER EVENT

Penn DOT has restored speeds on local highways after the weather yesterday slowed traffic in many areas around the state.  Temperatures this morning have risen above freezing and there are no more reports of major problems along the secondary roadways or interstates. Some schools implemented a two hour delay this morning in North Central PA.

MONTGOMERY MAN ARRESTED FOR ASSAULT

After a domestic incident at a river lot campground in Montgomery, a man was been jailed for allegedly pushing the woman involved, who was holding an infant.  According to the Sun Gazette, police say 31 year old Delbert Hayes of 125 S. Main Street was intoxicated and pushed and assaulted his significant other on October 28th, who with the baby, ended up on the floor before fleeing to a vehicle outside. Police say the woman called 911 after being assaulted again outside their camper.  Hayes has been charged with felony endangering the welfare of a child and simple assault and was taken to Lycoming County Prison, but has been released on 25 thousand dollars bail.

TROOPERS JUSTIFIED IN SHOOTING OF MASS SHOOTER IN JORDAN TWP

Preliminary findings were released on the fatal shots fired by troopers November 5th in Jordan township after a mass shooting near Unityville, and Distirct Attorney Ryan Gardner deemed  the officers justified in firing the shots that killed 54 year old Brian Taylor.  Taylor allegedly had shot his wife Linda Taylor, his sister, Andrea Meek who lived nearby, and a friend from Lebanon County who was visiting, 55 year old Jerry Zehring, that Saturday morning before traveling along Route 239 on an ATV and firing shots at cars and other cabins.  According to the Sun Gazette, the Lycoming County coroner said he has conducted toxicology tests on Taylor, but results will not be available for a few months.

LOYALSOCK TEACHER NOMINTED FOR GRAMMY

The Fine Arts Coordinator at Loyalsock Township School District has been recognized with a nomination for The Grammy’s 2023 Music Educator Award.  According to the Sun Gazette, Ryan Bulgarelli who is a Penn State Graduate teaches instrumental music, guitar, music technology, and directs the school’s bands and ensembles.  He has been with Loyalsock Township for 13 years.  Bulgarelli was chosen as one of 25 teachers nationwide – and the only educator nominated from Pennsylvania. The finalists will be announced in December.

TWO-STORY SHED BURNS IN PICTURE ROCKS

As a result of a fire that destroyed a shed near Picture Rocks, the woman who rented the property was also injured trying to save animals from the burning structure.  According to the Sun Gazette, Picture Rocks and Hughesville firefighters responded to the blaze at 472 Pine Tree Road and got the fire under control in about 20 minutes.  The unidentified victim of the fire declined treatment for her hands initially at the scene.  Fire officials said they stayed into the afternoon to control hot spots that sprung up.  An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, and no estimates on the damage done have been released.

THEFTS OF PA SKILL GAMES AT LOCAL LAUNDROMATS

Police are investigating a rash of thefts that have occurred at laundromats in which suspects are breaking into and stealing from Games of Skill machines.  According to North Central PA dot com, State police said the most recent theft occurred Monday at Lexie’s Laundry on Route 522 in Snyder Township when the suspects took cash from the machine and used it to obtain cash out tickets.  They say similar thefts have occurred in Union and Northumberland counties.  If you have information, please call State Police at Selinsgrove 570-374-8145.

PA LIBERTARIANS MAINTIAN PARTY STATUS AFTER MIDTERMS

After the midterm elections in Pennsylvania, the Libertarian party status is set, as the legislative candidates of the party received more votes than any other previous midterm election.  According to North Central PA dot com, for the first time in 20 years they received at least 2% of the vote in at least 10 counties and will maintain party status as determined by PA election law.  The two most prominent Libertarian candidates running in Pennsylvania were Erik Gerhardt for U.S. Senate and Matt Hackenburg for Governor.

REMAINS OF PENNSYLVANIA WWII SOLDIER IDENTIFIED

The remains of a World War II soldier from Pennsylvania who was killed during an ambush in France in 1945, have been identified.  According to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, scientists did DNA and dental analysis and determined the unidentified body to be that of 25 year old Pfc Francis Martin of Scranton. Martin was killed when German forces attacked a truck convoy he was in, and his along with 37 other sets of remains were disinterred and analyzed for identification.  Martin’s name is on the Walls of the Missing at a cemetery in France where a rosette will be placed since Martin is now accounted for.

DANVILLE ANNOUNCES REMOTE LEARNING FRIDAY AFTER THREAT

There will be no in-person instruction today for staff and students at Danville Area Schools after a threat was received Thursday afternoon around 4pm.  According to the Daily Item, Thursday afternoon activities were cancelled and Friday moved to a flexible instruction day due to the non-building specific threat that was received at the High School.  Acting Superintendent Harry Mathias said the threat is being investigated by school officials and they are following some leads.

LOCK HAVEN MAN GUILTY IN JANUARY 6 TRIAL

A Lock Haven man was found guilty for his role in the insurrection at the Capitol building in Washington DC on January 6th 2021.  According to Penn Live, 28 year old Brian Gundersen could be sentenced to up to 28 years in prison for charges of corruptly obstructing an official proceeding and assaulting or impeding officers.  The prosecution provided photographic evidence of Gundersen in the Capitol on several instances of entering the capitol by force and him confronting police who had riot shields.  Sentencing is scheduled for January 27th 2023.

NEW COMPENSATION POLICY FOR COUNTY WORKERS

A new compensation policy has been approved 2 to 1 by the Lycoming County Commissioners for County employees and many could see a significant pay increase based on their level of experience and education.  Tony According to the Sun Gazette, officials from the county’s human resources department say new rates and a 3.5 percent across the board raise brings one pay scale to the county employees, and eliminates the previous part-time scale previously used – it will be the same for full and part timers.  The new increases are set to take effect January 1st and will add 1.3 million dollars to the payroll.

SHERIFF’S OFFICE WARNS OF NEW PHONE SCAMS

There’s another phone scam going around in our area and the Lycoming County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning to not provide any credit card information to perpetrators impersonating people from the Sheriff’s Office.  According to a news release, the caller will tell the recipient that there is a warrant out for their arrest and that they can pay fines over the phone.  The scammers then take the victim’s personal and financial information.  If you receive any of these calls document them and notify the Lycoming County Sheriff at 570-327-2280.

PERMIT APPLICATION FOR FLY ASH FACILTY WITHDRAWN

The business owner who applied for a permit to have a fly ash facility in the Milton Borough has withdrawn his application after Wednesday’s conditional use hearing at the Milton Borough Council meeting. According to North Central PA dot com, the discussion was contentious discussing the potential environmental damage that could come from a fly ash facility – one that ultimately the DEP indicated would not be permitted.  Mr. Milton LLC withdrew his application before public comment could take place.  The board has 45 days to address the permits for other uses of the facility, including as a bus terminal and as a solar panel distribution center.

VANDALISM CASE AT MILTON TURNED OVER TO POLICE

The case of student athletes from Selinsgrove allegedly vandalizing the new 15 million dollar facility at Milton Area School District has been turned over to Milton Police department.  In separately released statements this week, Milton and Selinsgrove schools addressed the vandalism; with Selinsgrove downplaying the damage and asking for a bill from their host.  Milton officials investigated and photographed damage at the facility and say it should have been treated with respect. Milton officials say the incident has also been reported to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association.

NEW PHONE SYSTEM FOR SHIKELLAMY

A new upgraded phone system is expected to be installed in classrooms at Shikellamy School District to allow for more private communications and more efficient handling of emergency situations. According to the Daily Item, during Wednesday’s board meeting, Superintendent Jason Bendle told the board the 65 thousand dollar upgrade is worth the money and if approved, can be installed in the 2023-24 school year.  The upgraded phone lines will make it easier for teachers, administrators and police to communicate if necessary.  The board said they will take action on the approval of the upgrade next month.

PIAA PLAYOFF TICKETS AVAILABLE ONLINE

Tickets will not be sold at the games for the PIAA State Soccer tournament quarterfinal rounds on Saturday. Those who want to attend any of the games must purchase tickets through the PIAA website – PIAA.org through a link on the top of the page. Semifinal round games are slated for next Tuesday, Nov. 15 – and state finals in all classifications either Friday the 18 or Saturday the 19.  Tickets for all upcoming games are $8 plus processing fees and – again – must be purchased on the PIAA web site – not at the games.

RAIN FROM NICOLE THWARTS SOME VETERANS DAY PLANS

Heavy rain is expected Friday due to the remnants of Hurricane Nicole and it’s affecting some Veteran’s Day plans.  The event in Montoursville where US Representative Fred Keller was expected to speak has been cancelled, but there will be a “Six Points of Light” event  at the Veteran’s memorial at Lycoming Creek Road and Cottage Avenue tonight at 5:30pm. Representative Joe Hamm will be speaking at the Jersey Shore Presbyterian Church at 235 South Main Street in Jersey Shore Friday night at the Veteran’s Day Prayer for America.

VICTIM IDENTIFIED IN FATAL ELDRED TOWNSHIP CRASH

Police have released the identities of the people involved in the one car accident in Eldred Township at Northway and Harvey Road.  According to the Sun Gazette, the Lycomign County Coroner reported that 66 year old Stephen Ranck of Hughesville dioed of blunt force trauma in the fatal crash that happened last Friday afternoon around 3:30PM.  Ranck’s passenger 66 year old Michael Hill of Hughesville was rescued from the accident and transported to UPMC Williamsport.  Hill suffered critical injuries after the vehicle he was in went down a 30-foot embankment.

CARELESS SMOKING CAUSED APARTMENT FIRE

There was 40 thousand dollars worth of damage done to a Williamsport apartment building that caught fire last month.  According to the Sun Gazette, 11 people were left homeless from the fire at 2205 West Fourth Street where one woman jumped from the third floor of the structure before fire crews arrived on the scene.  She was hospitalized and later released.  Williamsport Fire Chief Sam Agnst says they have determined that careless smoking caused the fire that broke out about 130am on October 23rd.

TWO-DAY BLOOD DRIVE IN LOCK HAVEN

There will be a two day blood drive at Lock Haven, a Commonwealth University next Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons November 15th and 16th.  According to the Sun Gazette, the Lock Haven Red Cross Club is sponsoring the event that will be 1-6pm at the Student Recreation Center at 550 Railroad Street.  Those who wish to donate should schedule an appointment to ensure an opportunity to donate.  Go to redcrossblood.org and enter code LHUUNIVERSITY.

SELINSGROVESCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT ADDRESSES VANDALISM

The vandalism and damage that was done at Milton’s Alumni Field last Friday night allegedly by Selinsgrove players after a 30-0 playoff win over Milton Friday night.  Selinsgrove Superintendent Dr. Frank Jankowski released a statement last week addressing the rumor that there was urine spread in the locker rooms – but that was false.  There are now reports of graffiti damage that was not reported initially.  According to media outlets, the Selinsgrove Athletic Director and members of the coaching staff were immediately made aware of the vandalism, and they responded with a request for Milton administrators to ‘send a bill’.  Photos taken of alleged damage at the facility posted to social media were later deleted.  Selinsgrove is at Jersey Shore tonight in the District 4 4A Championship game.

FIRE IN SHAMOKIN EXTINGUISHED QUICKLY

There was a fire that struck in Shamokin last night.  According to The News Item, two calls went out for heavy smoke seen at half-double home 238 West Walnut Street.  Fire crews were on the scene quickly and extinguished the blaze by just after 6:15pm.  No injuries were reported, and no information was released about the condition of the home.

MONTOURSVILLE CONSIDERING NEW POLICIES FOR ARMED GUARDS

A policy was approved by the Montoursville Area School Board to allow for the decision to hire contracted armed guards at their schools. According to North Central PA dot com, School Board President David Schimmel said the board may vote to approve specific personnel hires at an upcoming special meeting in the next couple of weeks if they feel comfortable after interviews this week.  The voting moves forward after the Board’s October meeting, where they approved job descriptions for armed guards.  Some members of the board want still like to have an official vote to approve whether the district goes through with adding armed personnel.  The Board did vote to approve the policy that will allow guards that are contracted independently or through a third-party, to carry firearms on school property with a vote of 7-1.

VETERAN’S MEMORIAL AT UPMC WILLIAMSPORT

UPMC unveiled a new veteran’s memorial monument on the Williamsport campus this week for the Veteran’s Day holiday and dedicated it to former UPMC Williamsport President and veteran Steve Johnson.  According to North Central PA dot com, Johnson who was only recently informed about the dedication, said he was humbled by the honor and that the monument is about those working in healthcare and serving their country.  The monument design is a soaring eagle with medallions representing the six branches of the U.S. military.  There are about 15 hundred veterans employed in the UPMC network.
