FATAL MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT

The Lycoming County Coroner said the identity of the motorcyclist who died yesterday in Bastress Township will be released today.  According to the Sun Gazette, an off-duty sheriff’s deputy who allegedly witnessed the accident near Jacks Hollow Road Monday afternoon just after 4:30, performed CPR when he discovered the victim in cardiac arrest.  Crews from DuBoistown arrived and also attempted life saving measures, but according to Charles Kiessling, Jr. the man passed away shortly after arriving at UPMC Williamsport.  PA State Police are investigating the crash and more information is expected from authorities today.

FED EX DRIVER CHARGED AFTER ACCIDENT

Police say a Fed Ex Driver was highly intoxicated while involved in an accident Monday afternoon on Interstate 180, just west of the Williamsport/Loyalsock Township line.  According to the Sun Gazette, witnesses told Williamsport police the truck driver attempted to run a woman driving a Subaru Legacy off the roadway, causing the accident that ended up in the grassy median, but no injuries were reported.  Police took the Fed Ex driver into custody and he was charged with felony aggravated assault and recklessly endangering.

LOCK HAVEN  CITY HALL TESTED FOR LEGIONELLA BACTERIA

Lock Haven City Hall is free of legionella bacteria after the first tests have come back and they forecast it will be safe for employees to return to work.  According to the Lock Haven Express, City Manager Greg Wilson said City Hall closed on Aug. 30 due to positive tests of the bacteria in its HVAC system.  After the discovery the building was cleaned and disinfected.  The final set of tests is due next week when the city will make an announcement that the building can be fully occupied again.  Lock Haven City Police are continuing to operate out of a temporary facility at Commonwealth University of Lock Haven and remaining offices at City Hall are operating out of the city’s Public Works facility at 99 Second Ave.

MINKS ESCAPE FROM SUNBURY FARM

A vandal allegedly cut a hole in the fence Sunday at a Northumblerland County mink farm and between 6,000 and 8,000 of the animals  escaped.  According to Penn Live the fence was damaged at Richard H. Stahl Sons Inc. fur farm in Rockefeller Township and the animals got out after their pens were allegedly opened.  A person familiar with animal rights groups who typically cause this kind of damage to fur farms to liberate the animals told the paper that the vandalism is consistent with what the FBI calls extremist group behavior.  Mink are aggressive animals and family pets in the area should be kept in for now.  Any captured mink can be brought to the  Sunbury Animal Hospital  on Route 890.

MONTOURSVILLE MAN ARRESTED FOR STEALING DRIVEWAY STONE

A man from Montoursville, who told officials he was a tax payer entitled to take driveway stones from the township without paying, was charged with theft by unlawful taking.  According to North Central PA dot com, 59 year old Douglas Lyle Watts was spotted taking the stones July 23^rd by a township supervisor, he refused to return them when asked, first saying he was given permission 20 years ago by a former Upper Fairfield Township Supervisor to take the stones, then saying he deserved them.  Watts was also charged with driving an unregistered vehicle he used to haul the stones.  His preliminary hearing is October 2^nd. 

INVESTIGATION CONTINUES INTO 9/11 MEMORIAL RIDE ACCIDENT

The South Williamsport Police Department continues the investigation into the injury of a fire police officer during the 9/11 Memorial Coalition Ride the evening of September 11^th, as the community rallies around William Howlett during his recovery in intensive care at UPMC Williamsport.  According to the Sun Gazette, Howlett is a retired custodian of the South Williamsport School District, and was struck at the intersection of Riverside Drive and Maynard Street allegedly by a participant in the ride who was blinded by the sun.  Police said first responders worked to get Howlet free from the three wheeled motorcycle for about ten minutes before he was transported to the hospital.  There is no official release of information into the accident at this time.

NINE ESCAPED JUVENILE OFFENNDERS RECAPTURED

The nine teenagers who escaped from a juvenile detention facility outside of Phildelphia late Sunday, were all captured less than 12 hours after their escape.   According to Penn Live, the first four were taken into custody early Monday, the other five were involved in a car chase with police before they were recaptured, one of those fove tried to run from that scene but was caught a short time later in a nearby field.  State and local police were required to take control of the center near Morgantown, PA after two of the teens who attempted the escape got possession of keys after overpowering a staff member.  All the boys will face additional charges for the escape.

BID IN FOR SECOND PHASE OF CSVT

 Bids for work on nine bridges and noise walls over six miles of the Southern Section of the Central Susquehanna Valley Transportation Project opened last year. The section now in consideration is part two of the CSVT project which includes an interchange/connector to Routes 11/15 and Route 61 the Veterans Memorial Bridge in Shamokin Dam. According  PennDOT, an apparent low bid of $106.4 million was submitted by Walsh Construction Company II LLC of Chicago, Illinois. Work on the structures is expected to begin in early 2024 with completion anticipated by early 2026.

BAIL DENIED FOR BUSINESS OWNER ACCUSED OF MURDER

A Williamsport judge has denied bail for the business owner who shot his brother in law in the lobby of the business August 16^th.  According to North Central PA dot com, 65 year old Kenneth Richard Michaels waived his preliminary arraignment yesterday.  Police were called to Cable Services Company on Marydale Drive in Williamsport last month after Michaels allegedly shot John Roskowski, in the abdomen and failed to call for help.  Police took Michaels into custody last week in Cape May New Jersey, his preliminary hearing is September 22^nd in Lycoming County Court.

MOUNT CARMEL MAN FACES DRUG CHARGES

A Mount Carmel man who turned himself in this summer for his role in the drug death of his teenage brother last April, has waived his preliminary hearing in  Northumberland County Court of Common Pleas.  According to the News Item, 21 year old Christopher Payne is charged with two felony counts of drug delivery resulting in death, delivering a controlled substance and criminal conspiracy and other misdemeanors in the death of 15 year old Ricky Payne who was found dead at home in the morning of Aril 6^th this year.

PENNDOT JOB FAIR

A PennDOT job fair is planned for the end of September for open positions with the department in Sullivan County.  Recruiters will be available for on the spot applications September 28^th from 2 until 6pm at the Sullivan County Maintenance Office, on  Park Street in Laporte.  Applicants for the Transportation Equipment Operator A and Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic positions must bring their current CDL license. SUPPORT SURROUNDS JERSEY SHORE PLAYER

There has been no official word of football player Max Engel’s medical condition released, as there is an outpouring of support shown regionally.  According to media outlets, schools throughout North Central PA have decided to wear orange in support of the Jersey Shore Bulldog who collapsed on the field at last Friday night’s game.  The Jersey Shore SHikellamy football game scheduled for tonight has been postponed after an agreement by both teams. A go fund me account to “Help the Family of Max Engel” has been started and has reached over 45 thousand dollars.

WALMART SHOPLIFTERS ARRESTED

Three men are in custody today after police apprehended them after they stole items from the Walmart in Montoursville.  According to North Central PA dot com, police say 32 year old Gabriel Munoz, 25 year old Byran Garcia, and Jose Perez took more than one thousand dollars-worth of clothing, shoes, and jewelry from the store and left the store, only to be stopped by police at Lowe’s a short time after.  Police say Perez ran from officers and was found by Hughesville police and taken into custody.  The two other men were arrested and charged for third-degree felony retail theft. Police retrieved the stolen items from a white Jeep with out-of-state plates that the trio was using.

TRUCK AND UNIFORMS STOLEN FROM HISTORIC SITE IN SCRANTON

A government truck and park ranger uniforms were stolen from an historic site in Scranton Pennsylvania yesterday and police are seeking information about the theft.  According to WNEP, Scranton police say a white Ford F-350 utility truck with government plates (G632007V), and the uniforms with National Park Service patches were taken with no known motive.  The theft was discovered at the Steamtown National Historic site Thursday after 7pm.  Call the Scranton Police Department ((570) 348-4130) if you have information.

SCHOOL BUILDING SALE APPROVED

The sale of Thaddeus Stevens Primary school, which has been closed for about a year, was approved by the Williamsport Area School Board this week.  According to the Sun Gazette, a sales agreement with Moonrise Acquisitions LLC is in place and will allow for the purchase of the Williamsport buildings and grounds.  There will be a petition filed stating the purchase price at 850 thousand dollars for the facility at 1150 Louisa Street.  The new owner did not state any plans publicly for the newly acquired building.

DENTON HILL SET TO REOPEN

After almost 10 years of being closed, plans are in place to restore skiing and expand four-seasons recreation at Denton Hill State Park in Ulysses by DCNR.  According to North Central pa dot com, DCNR will partner with a new local business, Denton Go, to build out recreational opportunities at the 700 acre-park on Route 6 in Potter County.  Three local people started Denton Go in order to run operations and the concessions at the park according to a press release.  The two entities are working out the terms of a 35-year lease, after which, the design plans for the park will get underway.

ESCAPED CONVICT CAPTURED ALIVE BY STATE POLICE

PA State Police have announced that Danelo Cavalcante the Brazillian man who escaped from the Chester County Prison 14 days ago has been captured alive.  According to PennLive, local media reported that Cavalcante was hiding in a field in northern Chester County when searchers used thermal imaging to assist police.  He was caught at about 8:15am this morning and has been taken to the state police’s Avondale barracks Chester County Schools and Longwood Gardens were closed while hundreds of police searched the perimeter they established.  and residents were urged to shelter in place as the escapee eluded law enforcement.  The Washington Post reported that one tower guard who prison authorities said should have seen Cavalcante escape was fired.

BODY FOUND IN SUNBURY

A body of an unknown male was found in the 200 block of South Third Street of Sunbury yesterday afternoon before 5pm.  According to the Daily Item, Sunbury police are now investigating at the scene after people walking along the street discovered the body and called police.  The North Shore Railroad was closed yesterday evening as well as the area of Walnut and Church streets from Third to Fourth were taken up with police activity. The Northumberland County Coroner was also on the scene.

DELAY IN DECISION ABOUT CITY HALL BID

No decision will be made this week on the future of the condemned City Hall building on West Fourth Street in Williamsport.  According to the Sun Gazette, city council said at the finance committee meeting this week, that they will wait until September 28^th to make a decision about the property in order to consider whether to accept the a $555,500 high bid by JBAS Realty, of Jessup, a move Mayor Slaughter says the developer is comfortable with.  City Council also has the legal option to reject the bid entirely.  The city Economic Revitalization Committee will take comments from the public about the project today.

DISPLACED FLAMINGO RESCUED IN PENNSYLVANIA

The PA Game Warden rescued a displaced flamingo last week after it was injured by a snapping turtle in Franklin County.  According to North Central PA dot com, the bird drifted into Pennsylvania after Hurricane Idalia, and an observer witnessed the turtle attack and the bird was rescued and taken to an emergency vet. According to a Facebook post by the Raven Ridge Wildlife Center  where the bird was taken.  The X-rays show no breaks or fractures to the injured leg, but there is tissue, muscle and some tendon damage.  Funds are being raised for the bird’s rehab at the center in Lancaster, PA.. Over 4 thousand dollars has been raised so far.

TIOGA COUNTY CAR THIEF APPREHENDED IN HUGHESVILLE

Police in Hughesville pulled over a Philadelphia man in a traffic stop and discovered he was a car thief wanted in Tioga County.  According to state police in Mansfield, the 50 year old suspect, who was not identified in the police report, allegedly walked into a garage on Route 414 in Liberty Township August 20^th and stole the property owner’s Ford pickup truck.  Local police found him with the owner’s loaded handgun the truck.  The suspect was incarcerated at Tioga County Prison. 

2021 SHOOTER PLEADS GUILTY IN CLINTON COUNTY

The man accused of shooting Jakob Haines in February of 2021 pleaded guilty during his trial at the Clinton County Courthouse yesterday.  According to the Lock Haven Express, Brian St. John, III told the court that he removed a gun from a case in a drawer, and without checking the chamber pulled the trigger and shot Haines at a home along Brewery Hollow in Woodward Township.  The guilty plea to one felony count of aggravated assault and one count of involuntary manslaughter now could see St. John sentenced to up to 35 years maximum and potentially facing up to $40,000 in fines.  He will remain incarcerated at the Clinton County Correctional Facility without bail until his sentencing date.

ARTIFACTS FROM 9/11 ADDED TO SHAMOKIN MEMORIAL

A piece of the World Trade Center and a rock from the Flight 93 crash site was placed permanently at a new 9/11 Memorial on Lincoln Street in Shamokin Monday.  According to the News Item, the piece of steel from the towers was donated by the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation in 2021 and will be held in a cabinet encased within a stone-faced memorial alongside a rock from the Shanksville crash site that was loaned in perpetuity by the National Park Service to the Shamokin Fire Bureau. A painting by Dave Tamkus depicting One World Trade Center is also on display.

LACROSSE CO-OP APPROVED FOR WARRIOR RUN AND DANVILLE

The Danville Area School Board approved a boys lacrosse co-op in a 6-2 vote between Danville and Warrior Run  School Districts Monday.  According to the Daily Item, school board director Sandy Green said he has concerns that Danville players could potentially lose playing time to those from Warrior Run, but Danville boys’ lacrosse head coach Devon Francke provided data to the board that suggests Danville players would not experience such a loss because of the pace of the game and the line is rotated every few minutes.  A student in favor of the co-op said the merger is an opportunity to learn from a diverse group of teammates.

A season-ending Achilles tear was confirmed Tuesday by an MRI for quarterback Aaron Rodgers after he was injured on the Jets’ fourth snap of the new season Sunday, and will have surgery to repair it. The New York Jets coach wholeheartedly endorsed new starter Zach Wilson.  Rogers injury is a blow to the Jets who traded for and built their season around him. MAN HIT BY TREE BRANCH SAVED VIA CPR

A man from McIntyre Township was saved by a family friend who is a first responders and knew to perform CPR when he was struck by a tree limb Saturday at his home near Ralston.  According to the Sun Gazette, the 50 year old man was pruning trees and was hit hard enough by the branch to go into cardiac arrest at the home on Route 14. His son was at the scene along with Devon Whitehill of the Ralston Volunteer Fire Company, who, when the man went into cardiac arrest after the accident, performed CPR that saved his life.  Ralston and Whitehall Fire departments responded and the man was transported to UPMC Williamsport  According to reports, he is now recovering at home.

911 PHONE SERVICE BACK IN OPERATION

The 9-1-1 system is back in operation after an outage cause problems Thursday and Friday.  In a fax notification from the Lycoming County Department of Public Safety, phone service to dialing 911 in Lycoming County reopened by Friday afternoon. Verizon completed restoration of the widespread outage which affected 911 in 11 counties, including Lycoming, Union, Snyder, Northumberland, Montour, and Columbia.  Strong thunderstorms on Thursday afternoon were attributed to the  outages, which started in the late afternoon.

MORE RESURFACING THIS WEEK ON ROUTE 15

Motorists are advised that a resurfacing project continues this week on Route 15 and Beauty’s Run Road in The City of Williamsport and Old Lycoming, Lycoming, and Lewis townships. HRI Corporation, the prime contractor for this $5.4 million resurfacing and pavement repair project, will be working on the Route 15 southbound structure over Route 220 in the City of Williamsport. Motorists can expect alternating lane restrictions where work is being performed. Work will be performed during daylight hours and is expected to be completed by November 2023.

GO FUND ME ESTABLISHED FOR JERSEY SHORE FOOTBALL PLAYER

A Gofundme page has been opened up for the Jersey Shore senior football player who collapsed at the Jersey Shore Selinsgrove football game Friday night. According to WNEP, #4 Max Engle a defensive end for Jersey Shore, made a tackle on the third down, then time out was called. He collapsed while walking back on the field. The GoFundMe page – found by searching “Help the Family of Max Engel”  has surpassed its’ 25 thousand dollar goal at this time.  Engle remained hospitalized Saturday morning, but there is no update to his condition.

BAIL DENIED FOR WOMAN WHO RAMMED LITTLE LEAGUE MUSEUM

The woman who is accused of ramming her van into the doors of the Little League museum in South Williamsport last July, has been denied bail and will remain in jail during her upcoming trial in Lycoming County Court.  According to the Sun Gazette, Theresa Salazar had been seeking release on supervised bail.  Judge Eric Lindhardt determined that he had concerns that the woman has a history of harassment and that release would bring an increased risk of danger to all involved prior to her trial.  Salazar was previously charged with attempted homicide, causing a catastrophe, aggravated assault, terroristic threats, felony mischief, felony trespassing and six counts of reckless endangerment. 

SEX OFFENDER DIDN’T REGISTER NEW JOB

A Cogan Station man who is a convicted sex offender failed to register his place of employment with police and is facing backlash.  According to the Sun Gazette, 62 year old Mark Walter Cunningham was terminated from his job in Hepburn Township when the employer learned he was a registered sex offender following the disclosure that he hadn’t updated his records with authorities.  Police say Cunningham is required to report any change in address or employment for the rest of his life.  He was re-arraigned and incarcerated in lieu of 25 thousand dollars bail.

BLOOMSBURG MAN PLEADS GUILTY FOR SELLING BODY PARTS

A 41 year old man from Bloomsburg pleaded guilty in federal court for buying and selling body parts stolen from cadavers at Harvard Medical School and an Arkansas mortuary.  According to North Central PA dot com, Jeremy Pauley unlawfully transported human remains, many of which had been donated to be used for research.  Several other suspects from Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Minnesota and Massachusetts were involved in the conspiracy are awaiting trial.  Pauley has been charged with interstate transportation of stolen property and conspiracy and faces other similar charges including abuse of a corpse in Cumberland County.

ANNUAL 911 RIDE IS TONIGHT

The 22nd Annual 9-11 Memorial Ride will once again wind its way through Lycoming County this evening September 11th. The rolling memorial honors those who lost their lives that terrible day and to the fallen in the war on terror. County Sheriff Mark Lusk and the Lycoming County Sheriff’s Department will escort the ride with many fire and police units providing traffic control along the entire 42-mile route. The crowds on the streets and country lanes have been estimated previous years at 20,000 people.  Plan accordingly, and know that the column will be leaving the Clinton Township Fire department along Route 54 at 6pm after a 5pm memorial service. MAN ARRESTED FOR ASSAULT WITH A BOX CUTTER

A Williamsport man was arrested after allegedly slashing another man with a box cutter near the 1900 block of West Fourth Street on Tuesday.  According to the Sun Gazette, police say Dennis Prieto, Jr. attacked Maxwell Stokely in the neck, hand and face with the weapon and fled from the scene, and apprehended a short time later about a block away.  Police found 11 ounces of marijuana when Prieto was searched.  Stokely was treated UPMC Williamsport.  Prieto faces felony aggravated assault charges and misdemeanor drug possession charges, and is in Lycoming County Prison  in lieu of 100 thousand dollar bail.

NINE YEAR OLD GIRL LOSES LIFE AFTER FREAK ACCIDENT

The 9 year old daughter of a staff member of Mifflinburg Area High School football team has died after an accidental injury she sustained after being struck by a falling tree September 1st.  Nine year-old Joslyn Noelle Flickinger, a fourth-grade student at Mifflinburg Area Intermediate School and the daughter of Luke and Mandie Flickinger, passed away Tuesday according to a social media post by the family, that thanked those who prayed and attended a vigil for Joslyn.  A fund has been created at Mifflinburg Bank & Trust to support the family, called the “Flickinger Family Medical Fund.”Joslyn will be honored at the Shamokin football game this Friday by attendees wearing her favorite color, light blue or teal, and Buffalo Valley Church and Hillside Coaches will also collect donations for the family.

WOMAN SELLS TRAILER THAT WAS NOT HERS

A woman from White Deer Township has been charged with felony theft by deception for selling a house trailer that was not hers.  According to the Daily Item,  Amy R. Wells sold the trailer to a 44 year old male victim for 5 thousand dollars, and it was only later he found out that Wells was not the owner of the property.  State Police at Milton were made aware of the theft on August 5^th and now Wells was arraigned August 30^th with a preliminary hearing scheduled for September 19^th.

PRE REGISTRATION DEADLINE TODAY FOR CAMP SUSQUE RUN

Camp Susque has invited the public to participate in their Harvest Festival and Trail Run coming up on September 16 in Trout Run.  The festival event is free to the public with the morning kicking off with a 5/10K trail race and fun race at 9:30am.  Today is the deadline to pre-register for the race for a T-shirt.  Camp Susque is a non-profit, non-denominational and ACA accredited Christian camp with programs like boys and girls summer camps, family camps, winter camps and year-round retreats.  Register for the Trail Run race and get information online  www. susque.org .

MAN ARRESTED FOR THREATENING PENNDOT WORKERS WITH RIFLE

A Williamsport man is facing charges after threatening PennDOT workers while holding a rifle at a construction site near his home August 26^th.  According to North Central PA dot com, 66 year old Dwight Wayne Mosteller approached workers near the 170 block of Sholder Road on an ATV and was allegedly upset over workers dumping stone near his property.  Throughout the morning witnesses say Mosteller continued to watch the workers and remained agitated, even raising the gun toward workers before a family member came and removed the gun from the man’s hands.  He was charged with st-degree misdemeanor terroristic threats, simple assault, and disorderly conduct, and released on 55 thousand dollars unsecured bail.

TEEN IN CUSTODY AFTER WIELDING A KNIFE AT HOME

A 13 year old girl from Milton was charged with attempted homicide after family members called police when she attempted to stab her father with a knife over an argument over the appropriateness of posters in her room.  According to the Daily Item, state police were called to the home Monday afternoon along Main Street in West Chillisquaque Township in Northumberland County.  Police say when the girl was taken into custody, she told police that she wanted to kill her father and grandmother. According to court documents, drug paraphernalia was also found in the girl’s bedroom She was released to medical staff on $25,000 unsecured bail. 

RENOVO MEDICAL CENTER IN FINANCIAL TROUBLE

Bucktail Medical Center in South Renovo is facing financial difficulties and may have to close its doors, leading to a loss of jobs and a 40 minute commute for the community to get to the next closest healthcare facility. The non-profit hospital officials say they may soon struggle to pay employees. The Bucktail Medical Center in South Renovo provides emergency room services, skilled nursing, imaging, and EMS services.  A GoFundMe Account has been set up to help the hospital and a community meeting is set for 7 p.m. Monday at the Chapman Township Fire Hall in North Bend to discuss the facility’s future.

About a third of those who ran in the Mexico City Marathon last month were disqualified after many cut the course during the event.  Of the 30,000 that entered the August 27the race, after tracking data showed about 11,000 bypassing entire sections of the 26.2-mile course. There were allegations that some runners used using public transportation, vehicles and bicycles to finish the race.  The Mexico City Marathon has had issues in the past with cheating.   More than 6,000 runners were booted from the 2017 race and did not receive medals for finishing, and almost 3,100 racers were disqualified the next year.
