POLICE BLAME MIFFLINBURG BUS ACCIDENT ON DRIVER ERROR

After all 16 students escaped injury after a bus accident Monday in Mifflinburg police reported at the borough council  meeting last night that the cause of the crash was allegedly caused by driver error.  According to the Daily Item, the bus jumped the curb near on Sixth Street onto Chestnut Street ultimately traveling onto the sidewalk and getting wedged between a tree and the porch of a home.  No one was at the property at the time of the accident.  Police say they shut down the road while they extracted the bus from the area by cutting down an already dead tree and using a heavy duty wrecker to avoid any more damage to nearby houses. The children were evacuated from the bus without incident in to the custody of their parents. The police investigation into the accident continues.

MAN CAUGHT DRIVING STOLEN CAR

A man from Lawrenceville was stopped by police along Route 49 near Merrick Hill Road in Deerfield Township for a traffic violation and they discovered the car he was driving was stolen.  According to North Central PA dot com, 39 year old Adam Putnam allegedly stole the 2010 Nissan Versa from Corning, N.Y., and upon arrest was found to have methamphetamine and marijuana in his possession.  Putman was arraigned and taken to Tioga County Prison in lieu of 15 thousand dollars bail.

YAW ANNOUNCES GRANTS FOR RURAL FIRE SAFETY

Grants for funding to help rural communities increase protection from wildfires, while encouraging fire safety was awarded to eight local volunteer fire companies across the 23rd District this week.  According to Senator Gene Yaw, grant recipients in Lycoming County include South Williamsport’s Independent Fire Co. No. 1 and Lairdsville Community Volunteer Fire Company.  Eldredsville Volunteer Fire Co. Inc.in  Forksville were also awarded funding to assist with rural fire services.  Four companies in Tioga and one in Bradford County were also awarded grants in District 23.   The grant program is offered through DCNR and funded through federal grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service.

“SEALANT SATURDAY” COMING TO PENN COLLEGE IN NOVEMBER

Free dental care, to include oral health screenings, sealants, and dental health education will be available November 4th from 9am til noon at Penn College’s Dental Hygiene Clinic.  According to Penn College, low-cost sealants done by volunteer dentists, dental hygienists, and Penn College students will be available to the public ages 7 – 18, by appointment for “Sealant Saturday” taking place on the second floor of the Breuder Advanced Technology Health Sciences Center.  Call 570-320-8007 to make your appointment. Penn College has been a Sealant Saturday host since 2003.

SELINSGROVE STUDENT DIES IN CAR CRASH

A serious crash on Route 487 between Paxinos and Elysburg killed an eighth grader from Selinsgrove area school district Monday, and also injured other members of the student’s family. According to the Daily item, the crash at 2:30pm trapped four victims in the vehicle that had caught fire, before first responders could extinguish the flames and rescue the victims.  Two were flown to Geisinger and two transported to Danville by ambulance.  Ralpho Township Police have provided no details on the crash, but two SUV had extensive damage at the scene according to police. Selinsgrove Area School District Superintendent Frank Jankowski, said that Christopher Sensing was the victim of the crash, and that counseling and support is available the school.

KENTUCKY WOMAN CRASHES OFF OF ROUTE 15

A woman from Kentucky escaped serious injury last weekend after a car crash along Route 15 in Union Township.  According to State Police, 30 year old Helen Coleman was allegedly speeding along the Union County highway when she hydroplaned and spun off the road, heading down an embankment, spinning and striking two utility poles before the vehicle caught fire.  Coleman was transported to Evangelical Hospital and troopers gave her a citation for speeding.

SOUTHSIDE ELEMENTARY PRINCIPAL STEPS DOWN

The principal of Central Elementary within the South Williamsport Area School District is stepping down next month and the school board has voted on her interim replacement for the end of the year.  According to the Sun Gazette, the South Williamsport area school board received and accepted the resignation of Dr. Michelle Loomis, and from November 10th through the Christmas break, Patricia Cross who is a retired Sullivan County superintendent and former principal will take her place.  The next South Williamsport school board meeting is November 6th at  6pm at the high school library.

DRIVE-THROUGH FLU SHOT CLINIC SATURDAY

Geisinger will be holding their flu shot clinics again this Saturday October 21st from 9am til 1am for all members of the public ages 3+ at no cost.  Over 30 locations around North Central PA will hold drive-through clinics, including Geisinger Muncy at 255 Route 220 Highway and Geisinger Lock Haven at 68 Spring Street.  Those needing vaccinations who are under 18 must have a parent or legal guardian with them and children ages 5 and under or those afraid of needles will be vaccinated inside the clinic. NO THREAT FROM NATURAL GAS SMELL IN WILLIAMSPORT

The Williamsport Bureau of Fire has released a statement on the Natural Gas odor that was noticed around Williamsport City and Old Lycoming Township.  According to the bureau, the odor is a result of a natural gas line repair that caused technicians to bleed the gas off a 24 inch main line.  The repair is complete and there is no concern needed by the public.  The smell of natural gas may still be in the atmosphere today because of the current weather conditions and air quality level. There is no danger to the public but if you do have concerns, contact the fire department (570) 327-1536.

TWO IN CUSTODY AFTER POLICE INVESTIGATE METH RING

The Lycoming County Narcotics Enforcement unit assisted police in taking two men into custody after an investigation led to a confidential informant assisting police in a drug ring that was discovered in August of this year.  According to North Central PA dot com, 29 year old Dondre Terrell McMillan and 35 year old Rashaun Fleming were allegedly running a methamphetamine and marijuana distribution chain.  Fleming was under investigation in August.   McMillan was ultimately caught October 12th for meeting an informant to purchase an ounce of methamphetamine and after the transaction, police attempted to stop him in a vehicle on I-180 in Williamsport.  McMillan fled police traveling over 100 miles per hour, crashing and then fleeing on foot until he was captured a short distance away.  He was charged with several felonies including aggravated assault, criminal mischief and escape. Both Fleming and McMillan were arrested in lieu of monetary bail.

CITY COUNCIL DELAYING CITY HALL VOTE AGAIN

There is still no decision on whether City Council will vote about the agreement of the sale of the former City Hall building on West Fourth Street in downtown Williamsport.  According to the Sun Gazette, several members of the administration were not at the meeting, so there was no discussion on the matter.  Slaughter previously said that they await results of pending state and federal investigations, including a special audit from the Federal Transit Administration which influences their decision making timetable.  Get information by emailing; city clerk at city of Williamsport dot org.

GRANTS FOR CENTRE COUNTY FIRE SAFETY

The Shapiro administration and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources awarded a grant to a rural fire department in Milesburg.  According to  82nd Legislative District, Rep. Paul Takac, the grant provides $2,660 in funding to Citizens Hook and Ladder Company #1 to support their efforts to partner with DCNR combating wildfires and brush fires in Centre County, enhancing safety for residents in rural Pennsylvania.

UPDATE FROM FAMILY ON AIDEN WALLACE

There was another message shared Friday by Montoursville Area High School on behalf of the family of Aiden Wallace the student who was rescued after a fall during a field trip at Jacoby Park.  According to the Facebook post, they say Aiden continues to improve, as he is awake, recognizing family and responding appropriately and that they are reading cards and messages to him.  They say there is still a need to limit any visitors since his doctors at Geisinger feel it’s important to introduce that process slowly.   The family says they continue to feel gratitude for all the support, prayers and outstanding care Aiden has received.   

DEATH OF WILLIAMSPORT MAN RULED A HOMICIDE

The body of a Williamsport man that was found Friday near Interstate 80 has been ruled a homicide.  According to the Daily Item, the man identified Saturday as 19-year-old Kevin Cagle was found by police to have had a criminal record that included robbery,  simple assault, theft, disorderly conduct, possession of marijuana and more.  The Montour County Coroner’s office has not released any more information about the investigation at this time, but if you have information surrounding  Cagle’s case, contact State Police at Milton or Montoursville.

MAN FLEES POLICE FACES CHARGES IN SELINSGROVE

A man who fled the scene of an accident in Shamokin Dam is facing several charges in Northumberland County court.  According to State Police in Selinsgrove say 30-year-old Levi Swancer crashed at the intersection of Routes 11 & 15  September 30th around 1am  – after the police pursued him for speeding.  He failed to negotiate a left hand turn and hit a curb in the area, ending up in a parking lot with damage and attempted to flee again.  Swancer was charged for fleeing as well as driving while his license was suspended or revoked.

RENOVATION OF CONTROL TOWER AT AIRPORT COMPLETE

The renovation of the control tower at Williamsport Municipal Airport is complete and the airport authority members expressed their approval with the project done by Lundy Construction.  According to the Sun Gazette, interior construction, installation of new windows, and the fire alarm system was upgraded and payment was approved for just over 200 thousand dollars which is derived from CARES Act funding. Another part of the project under consideration is to expand Montour Street to the airport to bring another access road to the airport, and Airport authority director Richard Howell said there is a meeting to consider the new road next week.

SUNBURY POLICE TO HOLD MEET AND GREET

One of several scheduled “Meet the Police” events will take place in Sunbury beginning tonight at Lincoln and Memorial Drive where police will be under a tent from 5 til 7pm so they can talk with residents.  According to the Daily Item, Acting Sunbury Police Chief Travis Bremigen said the new initiative is in place to bridge the gap between the police and the community and also allow those with concerns or issues to share them with law enforcement.  Other “Meet the Police” events will take place October 21st from 9am til noon in the 400 block of Market Street and on October 28th from 6 til 8 p.m. at Front and Chestnut streets.  The October 28th event will be like a trunk or treat where children can dress up and the public can decorate their vehicles – with prizes from the officers for their Top 3 favorite cars.

BODY FOUND ON I-80 IDENTIFIED

The body discovered on Friday morning on Creek Road in Liberty Township, Montour County has been identified.  According to the Daily Item, Montour County Coroner Scott Lynn released limited information after the autopsy was performed on Saturday, saying the body is 19-year-old Kevin Cragle from the Williamsport area. No further details were released. On Friday afternoon during the Montour County Coroner investigation, traffic was stopped along Mexico Road, Follmer Road and Creek Road and Interstate 80 eastbound was backed up for miles until after 4 pm when I- 80 was reopened.

BOMB THREAT AT LOCAL SYNAGOGUE

Late Friday afternoon, a bomb threat to Congregation Beth-El on Arch Street in Sunbury brought multiple police agencies into the city.  According to the Daily Item, the emailed threat was deemed credible by Sunbury City Police. According to reports, blocks around the synagogue were evacuated around 5pm and then at 7pm a bomb sniffing dog was dispatched from the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. No threats were found and all residents were able to return to their homes.  There were no injuries reported.

EMAIL THREAT SENT TO SUPERINTENDENT

A woman has been charged with terroristic threats and disorderly conduct after police say she threatened to bring a gun into a Selinsgrove Area School District building. According to the Daily Item, 49-year-old Theresa Moscarelli faces the charges including the two misdemeanors after she allegedly sent two emails containing threats to district superintendent Frank Jankowski in August.  Her preliminary hearing is coming up November 13th.

QUEEN RESULTS AT RENOVO FOLIAGE FESTIVAL

The 74th Flaming Foliage Festival was this last weekend in Renovo and even though the weather postponed the parade of Queens until Sunday the Clinton County event was well attended with patrons encouraged to carry umbrellas down vendors row.  As far as parade winners; Central Mountain won the 1st place band, 1st Citizen’s Hose Company of South Renovo was the best firetruck, First Commonwealth Bank of Renovo won the best small float and 1st place in the large float was the Bucktail class of 1976. The 2023 Flaming Foliage Queen is Cassie Lanzoni of DuBois, first runner-up is Aurora Cieslukowski of Warrior Run, and second runner-up is Natalia Mills of Williamsport. 

MAN ARRESTED FOR STALKING

A 45 year old man from Mifflinburg who followed two teenage girls last February was recently charged with stalking.  According to North Central PA dot com, the girls say Terry Lee Schaeffer Jr., made several attempts along E. Walnut Street near the Weis Markets, and later near the Buffalo Valley Rail Trail, to get their attention and they ultimately called a parent who said to call police.  After police investigated they said Schaeffer admitted to trying to wave down the girls because he wanted directions.  Charges were filed October 4th, and Scheaffer’s  preliminary hearing is November 14th

CONSTRUCTION CONTINUES IN HUGHESVILLE

A resurfacing and ADA curb ramp reconstruction project will continue this week along Main Street between Lycoming St and Route 118 in Hughesville Borough.  According to PennDOT,  the contractor, HRI Inc, will continue work today for the ADA curb ramps throughout the project area, with the  milling and resurfacing of Main St complete. The entire project is expected to be completed by the end of the month.

EVAN CEO RECOGNIZED BY GOVERNOR

The President and CEO of a local hospital has received the honor of being named one of Pennsylvania’s Distinguished Daughters. As reported by the Daily Item, Kendra Aucker of the Evangelical Community Hospital received the honor from Gov. Josh Shapiro and First Lady Lori Shapiro.  The award was presented at the Distinguished Daughters of Pennsylvania annual luncheon held last Wednesday at the Governor’s residence.  Aucker was chosen for her leadership to increase employee engagement and patient experience scores, bringing about the ‘most transformational growth’ in Evangelical’s nearly 100 years of existence.

LEAF PICK UP TO START IN LOYALSOCK TOWNSHIP

Guidelines and dates for leaf pickup have been established by Loyalsock Township, and is set to start Monday, October 30th.  According to the Township supervisors, leaves will be picked up by the leaf vacuum on township streets with curbs, and residents are asked to avoid parking in the street on leaf days and to leave a gap between the raked pile and the curt as to allow water to reach the storm drains.  Please do not include branches or sticks in with the leaves or allow leaves to stay in the street for more than 1or 2 days.  Those with a mulch key may take bagged leaves there – but do not let the bags remain behind.  The four areas of the township have various pick up schedules.  Get the details at Loyalsock township BOS dot com under the recycling tab.

FORMER SUNBURY POLICE CHIEF CHARGED WITH FELONY THEFT

Following his retirement after 22 years from the Sunbury Police department last week, Former Sunbury Police Chief Brad Hare has now been charged with felony and misdemeanor theft charges for allegedly stealing almost $7,000 from the Americus Hose Company.  According to WNEP, officials at the fire company noticed money missing from the office and installed surveillance on the property.  Police say 47 year old Hare was documented on surveillance to be in the building during the times money had gone missing over several months, and Hare allegedly confessed to the crimes when confronted in August.  Police say Hare may also have stolen from a video gaming machine.  He is free on 15 thousand dollars bail and his preliminary hearing is later in October.

CHILD INJURED BY BEAR WHILE CAMPING AT STATE PARK

A child who was inside a tent at Ricketts Glen State Park was injured by a bear that had wandered into the site.  According to North Central PA dot com, the unprovoked attack in Fairmont Township happened when  the child, who was camping with scouts and family members, realized a bear had come up upon the outside of the tent and in fear, he swatted at the  animal who swatted back, scratching him.  The child was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  Authorities said the bear was probably drawn to the campsite by unsecured food at other campsites.

UPDATE ON AIDEN WALLACE

The family of Aiden Wallace has asked the Montoursville School District to provide a another message about the recovery of their son, the Montoursville student who fell during a field trip last Wednesday at Jacoby Park.  According to the Facebook post, Aiden continues to improve after several successful surgeries and is breathing on his own.  The family says they are grateful for the continued prayers and out of consideration for the privacy of the family, they continue to ask that friends wait to visit to the hospital.

MULTIMILLION DOLLAR GIFT FOR NURSING SCHOOL AT CU

Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania (CU) has received its first-ever multimillion-dollar alumni gift that supports the new comprehensive direction of the integrated university. According to the Bloomsburg University Foundation, the $5 million gift from Ed and Julie Breiner, both 1977 graduates of the CU legacy institution Bloomsburg University, will support nursing education at all CU locations—Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, Mansfield, and Clearfield. CU President Bashar W. Hanna said the amazing gift will empower the School of Nursing will provide an affordable, top-tier education and produce exceptional graduates. 

MAN CHARGED AFTER DAMAGING NEIGHBOR’S HOUSE

A man from Clinton County who allegedly said his neighbor was harassing him through the internet and bothering him in his mind, caused destructive damage to the man’s property.  According to the Sun Gazette, 52 year old Wayne David Hamilton admitted to police that he cut the side of the man’s house on Stoner Lane in Piatt Township and also smashed an internet and cable box there.  Lycoming Regional Police say Hamilton caused 9 thousand dollars-worth of damage and was arraigned Monday for felony criminal mischief.  He was released on 25 thousand dollars bail.

BOIL WATER ADVISORY LIFTED IN MONTGOMERY

The boil water advisory has been lifted in Montgomery after a water main break last week near Route 405 and Brouse Road caused them to put the advisory in place .  According to Donna Miller at the Montgomery Water Authority, AT this time the water for customers in the community  and inside the Montgomery area school district  has been deemed safe.

PENNDOT SEEKS PROPOSALS FROM PRIVATE SECTOR

Unsolicited proposals for transportation projects from the private sector are being accepted through November 10th.  According to the PennDOT Office of Public-Private Partnerships , the submission period applies to PennDOT-owned projects and infrastructure, during which the private sector can submit proposals offering innovative ways to deliver transportation projects across a variety of modes including roads, bridges, rail, aviation, and ports.  The public can also apply for non-PennDOT-owned assets directly to the P3 board by going online to PennDOT.PA dot GOV.

SNAP AND EBT CHANGES THIS WEEK

There are some changes to SNAP income and benefit limits, as well as two planned outages for EBT services.  According to the PA Department of Human Services has announced that an EBT benefit outage is planned for tomorrow between 3am and 9am so the IT contractor can perform system maintenance.  After an evaluation by the  USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service, some SNAP income eligibility standards, as part of the maximum thrifty food plan has changed income limits for this month through September 2024.  EBT balances can be checked using the myCOMPASS PA mobile app, found on both Apple and Android devices.

MAN CHARGED AFTER TAKING MONEY FROM INFORMANT

A Cogan Station man is free on 5 thousand dollars bail after he allegedly took money from an undercover informant for drugs and never returned with the drugs or money on July 26th.  According to the Sun Gazette, court records say 31 year old Zakary Allen Koch told the undercover officer he’d be back to meet in 90 minutes and took 360 dollars, but eluded them when they attempted to reach him. He was charged with theft and waived his preliminary hearing.

PLANS DISCLOSED FOR STEVENS PRIMARY BUILDING

Information about the plans for the Stevens Primary School building was announced this week at the City Council Public Works Committee meeting in Williamsport.  According to the Sun Gazette, the property previously owned by the Williamsport Area School District , including buildings and grounds at 1150 Louisa St., were sold to Moonrise Acquisitions LLC in 2022, who at the time did not disclose plans for the building.  Plans were disclosed this week during the public works meeting that the property will be conditional use, multi-family housing. The price for the Stevens building at the time of closing was 850 thousand dollars.

TAYLOR SWIFT CONCERT MOVIE COMES TO TOWN

The Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour Concert film will be screened in 8,500 theaters in 100 countries beginning on Friday, including AMC theaters in Williamsport, Selinsgrove and Bloomsburg with at least four showings a day on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.  According to Penn Live, the film spans Taylor Swift’s 17-year award winning career . The Eras tour is the highest-grossing concert film in history, earning $100 million in global ticket advance sales sold. The runtime is 2 hours and 48 minutes.

PRESERVATION WILLIAMSPORT HOSTS FALL EVENT

A Halloween Themed event to raise funds to protect and restore Williamsport’s prominent architectural heritage is coming up next Friday October  20th.  According to Preservation Williamsport, their Boo from the Front Porch night will bring the community together for a night filled with fun and celebration at Park Place, 800 W. 4th St., Williamsport, where they will showcase the grand porches and historic ballroom of the venue while fostering community spirit during the Halloween season.  Local restaurants and sponsors will provide the food, drink and prizes.  For tickets or information, go to PreservationWilliamsport.com. 

DRUG MIDDLEMAN ARRESTED IN WILLIAMSPORT

A Williamsport man was arrested after a South Williamsport woman bought cocaine from him on June 21st who was a middleman to an undercover police officer. According to North Central PA dot com, 53 year old Laurona Walker of South Williamsport arranged with Tyrone Singleton to pick up the drug and was taken to a Sheridan street address for the transaction in an undercover vehicle.  Walker gave only some of the drugs to the undercover officer when she returned to the car, and was later questioned by police at her home and arrested for possession with intent to deliver.  Singleton was charged with five counts of possession and posted $45,000 monetary bail through a bondsman last week, and was released.

IDENTITY THEFT IN RICHMOND TOWNSHIP

A victim in Richmond Township had his identity stolen after a suspect duplicated his credit card and stole fuel.  According to North Central PA dot com, State Police at Mansfield say a 70 year old man told police the person used his information to pump 125 dollars of diesel fuel in Chester County August 17th.  If you know of any information about the identity theft, call State police in Mansfield at 570-662-2151.

SEWER MAIN WORK NEXT WEEK IN WATSONTOWN

A portion of Eighth Street will be closed next week in Watsontown Borough, in Northumberland County, for a sewer main repair. According to PennDOT, next Wednesday and Thursday, Eighth will be closed at the intersection with Broad Street while the Milton Regional Sewer Authority performs sewer main repairs. A detour using Matthew Street and Ninth Street will be in place while work is being performed between the hours of 6:30 AM and 5:00 PM, weather permitting.

FIRE PREVENTION EVENT IN WHITE DEER

There will be a fire prevention and safety event this Saturday at White Deer Community Park at 992 White Deer Pike from 10 til 1.  The event which is a fundraiser for upcoming park projects, including new playground equipment, will have demonstrations and hands-on activities including fire hoses to use and tours of fire trucks, ambulances, police cars and rescue vehicles.  A Life Flight Landing is scheduled for 11am and a K9 demonstration at noon.  There will be food trucks and safety and security products for sale.

MAN INJURED IN WEEKEND MOTORCYCLE CRASH

A 24 year old man from Danville was injured in a motorcycle crash Sunday.  According to State police, 24-year-old Bradley Palladino lost control of his motorcycle on Klondike Road at Hilkert Road in the gravel.  Palladino was thrown from the bike into a ditch and was transported to Geisinger Medical Center for a leg injury.  State police say they issued a citation to Palladino for speeding.

TWO CAUGHT FOR THEFT BY AI SOFTWARE

A pair of thieves went back to a store where they had stolen before, and were caught by new facial recognition software.  According to North Central PA dot com, 20-year-old Carmine Manuel Villafane and 26-year-old Ariel Kathryn Rogers both of Tobyhanna were seen on camera in the Renco Ace Hardware store on Route 11 in Scott Township in April stealing batteries.  When they returned in July, Villafane was recognized first because of a prior theft arrest in Milford, and police used new software to analyze the photos, police then made an identification of Rogers from her connection to Villafane, with whom she lives.  The pair were charged with criminal conspiracy and retail theft from the 500 dollars-worth of merchandise they allegedly took.

RIVER VALLEY TRANSIT ANNOUNCES NEW STRATEGIC PLAN

There is a new strategic plan for River Valley Transit Authority that was introduced this week after it was recently approved  by the authority board.  According to the Sun Gazette, the plan is meant to provide continued excellent service to riders and strengthen partnerships with the community the bus service serves.  Key goals and an implementation plan on how to achieve these goals can be read in full at rideRVT.com.  RVTA serves approximately 70,000 people across both Lycoming and Clinton counties.

WATER SHED CONSERVATION MEETING TONIGHT IN WILLIAMSPORT

A meeting to hear about programs promoting research and conservation of local streams and watersheds by Matt Kaunert, Director of the Clean Water Institute and Research and Teaching Associate of Biology at Lycoming College, is tonight in Williamsport.  According to the Sun Gazette, Kaunert, who is a doctoral candidate regarding Eastern Hellbender conservation at Ohio University and as part of the Institute, helps students and the public grow in understanding, protection, and restoration of local watersheds including Loyalsock Creek projects, plankton sampling on Rose Valley Lake and more. The event is at Covenant Central Presbyterian Church at 807 W. Fourth Street at 7pm.

MAN SEEN BY TROOPER STEALING MOTORCYCLE

State Police at Stonington said they caught a man in the act of stealing a motorcycle September 19th in Shamokin.  According to North Central PA dot com, 36 year old Kennard Burto Baker III, was seen by a trooper who was driving in the area of W. Willow and S. Sixth Streets, attempting to take a 2008 black Kawasaki motorcycle.  Shamokin Police were also on the scene.  Baker was searched and was also found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia.  He was arraigned with bail set at 5 thousand dollars unsecured and has a preliminary hearing October 26th.

VICTIM FROM IUP AREA FATAL SHOOTING IDENTIFIED

The Indiana Coroner has identified the man who was killed in the shooting that left 1 dead and 8 others wounded early Sunday at the Chevy Chase Community Center in White Township near the IUP campus.  22-year-old Jamar Herriot Jr. of Homestead, FL,was killed by the gunfire,  and an unidentified 18-year-old man from Chicago was critically injured, others sought treatment at area hospitals.  Police are seeking surveillance footage of the area the night of the shooting in which they believe there were multiple shooters.  Police say150 people were believed to be present at the event.  There is a 15 thousand dollar reward for information leading to the identification of the suspects.

COMMONWEALTH FLAGS AT HALF STAFF THIS WEEK FOR ISRAEL

Gov. Josh Shapiro has ordered United States and Commonwealth flags on all Commonwealth facilities, public buildings, and grounds to fly at half-staff through this Friday in recognition of the lives lost in Israel.  The governor’s office announced the recognition yesterday morning after condemning the attacks in Israel by Hamas. 

BRIDGE PROJECT TOMORROW IN SHAMOKIN

A maintenance project is happening tomorrow on the Veterans Memorial Bridge in the City of Sunbury and Shamokin Dam Borough. On October 12, a PennDOT maintenance crew will be performing work on the bridge.  Drivers can expect alternating lane restrictions while work is being performed between 7:30am and 3:30pm. MAN ARRESTED FOR TRYING TO SELL A GUN ON FACEBOOK

A man who tried to sell a gun through Facebook messages was arrested for second-degree felony firearms not to be carried without a license after an informant called police about the transaction.  According to North Central PA dot com, 32 year old John Stephen Epps was waiting along the 500 block of Pine Street with a 9mm Ruger SR9c, two magazines and bullets in a backpack when he was stopped by police and is no being held in Lycoming County prison in lie of 35 thousand dollars bail.  Court record say Epps is a convicted felon from Texas who is prohibited to carry a weapon.

GUNSHOTS BEING INVESTIGATED IN SUNBURY

Several gunshots were heard in Sunbury Sunday night and police are looking for input from the public if they know anything about it.  According to the Daily Item, if residents around the area of North 8th Street and Memorial Acres heard anything suspicious around 9:30pm Sunday night, contact Northumberland County 911. Members of the community with door cameras or any other surveillance are also asked to check them for suspicious activity. The Sunbury police say they are on patrol and actively investigating the 4 to 8 reported gun shots.

WATER MAIN BREAK IN MONTGOMERY

A water main break in Montgomery is causing the water authority there to issue  a boil water advisory until further notice.  According to the Sun Gazette, the Montgomery Water Authority said there was a loss of positive pressure after the break near Brouse Road and Route 405.  Water used for any purpose to ingest should be boiled for a full minute and cooled before using, or use bottled water for teeth brushing, making ice and other uses.  If residents experience negative symptoms like nausea, cramps or headaches after drinking untreated water, they should get medical advice.   The EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline is 1-800-426-4791.

FALL FEST AT LITTLE PINE STATE PARK SUNDAY

The  Annual Fall Festival at Little Pine State Park is this Sunday, October 15th from noon until 4pm. Little Pine State Park is at 4205 Little Pine Creek Road in Waterville and the festival will feature the natural resources and outdoor recreational opportunities in north-central Pennsylvania, including live animals, crafts, demonstrations, and more. The event is in the parking lot of the main day use area at the park and is free to attend.  The festival may be modified or cancelled in the event of severe weather.  Get details at dcnr.state.pa.us

NEW YORK WOMAN STRUCK ON I-80 BY HIT & RUN SUV

A woman from Beacon, New York driving on I-80 in Turbot Township was sideswiped yesterday by another car that fled the scene and State Police are investigating.  According to North Central PA a black SUV was traveling east in the left lane on 80 around mile marker 215 before it drifted into the lane where 20 year old Olivia Johnson was driving her 2019 Subaru Impreza.  Johnson’s vehicle suffered disabling damage at the scene of the wreck.  The black SUV continued east on I-80.  If you have information call State Police. 

MAN ARRESTED FOR POSSESSION OF CHILD PRONOGRAPHY

A 39 year old Hughesville man is in custody after state investigators conducted a raid of his home last Thursday and discovered dozens of images of child pornography on his cell phone and tablet.  According to the Sun Gazette, Douglas Samuel Seitzer, Jr. was arraigned on 40 felony counts of possession of child pornography and admitted to police that he sent and accepted inappropriate pictures of children and took pictures of children in public without them or their parents knowing so he could upload them to a pornographic website.  Seitzer is in Lycoming County Prison in lieu of 100 thousand dollars bail.

MAN ON THE RUN IN SHAMOKIN CAUGHT BY POLICE

A 24 year old man from Shamokin charged with firearms and sex crimes, who has been on the run since September 3rd has been captured by Shamokin police.  Accordin got the Daily Item, Kyle Lytle was found by police near Raspberry Hill Sunday just before midnight and was apprehended without incident.  Police said they recovered a loaded AK-47 rifle.  Lytle had been eluding police over an ATV pursuit before h e fled on foot early last month and allegedly kept hidden by some people who have been charged with harboring the suspect.  He faces an arraignment in Shamokin District Court at a future date.

200K GRANT AWARDED TO LOCAL UINIVERSITIES

200 thousand dollars has been awarded in a grant to Susquehanna University from the National Science Foundation.  According to the University  the funds will go to undergraduate research and training and to support the purchase of an instrument that renders accurate and precise measurements of the full three-dimensional structure of a molecule.  The device will be kept at Susquehanna, but is also available to aid research efforts at Bucknell University, which is a partner on the grant, as well as Elizabethtown and Lycoming colleges, and Wilkes University.

FATAL SHOOTING AT IUP, POLICE SEEK SUSPECTS

A 15 thousand dollar reward is being offered for information leading to the identification of the people who shot one person and wounded 8 others at a private party a mile from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania campus during their homecoming weekend.  According to the Daily Item, PA State Troopers said there were multiple shooters and rounds of gunshots were fired inside the Chevy Chase Community Center in White Township early Sunday morning following a noise complaint that police were about to address when the shooting incident started.  Police are collecting evidence and Indiana County District Attorney Robert Manzi Jr. is asking for cooperation from the public as they investigate.  A 22 year old man from Pittsburgh was pronounced dead at the scene the other victims , 2 of which were IUP students, were treated at Indiana Regional Medical and area UPMC hospitals.  Contact State Police with information 724-357-1960.

AMISH WOMAN INJURED IN CRASH

A crash involving a car and a horse and buggy in Limestone Township last Wednesday, sent an Amish woman to the hospital and injured the horse.  According to North Central PA dot com, 25 year old Amber Fogelman of Watsontown told police she was blinded by the sun on Broadway Road at about 5:50pm and struck the buggy that was traveling partially in the westbound lane.  The Amish woman was ejected about 30 feet and taken to Geisinger medical center with unknown injuries, the horse was transported for veterinary care.  Fogelman did not sustain any injuries and no charges have been filed.

FAMILY UPDATE ON AIDEN WALLACE

The Montoursville Area High School posted an update on social media on behalf of the family of Aiden Wallace, the 17 student who fell at Jacoby Falls during a field Trip Wednesday.  According to the family, Aiden is in stable but critical condition as he recovers from the trauma and responds to the treatment plan prescribed for him.  They say the concern, thoughts and prayers about Aiden and the family are appreciated and for Warrior families to check on the well-being of their children in response to Aiden’s recent accident.

WELLSBORO MAKES LIST OF BEST FOLIAGE IN THE US

Wellsboro, PA, with its Grand Canyon, is number 9 out of the 55 best towns in the country to see fall foliage.  According to a recent article by Country Living, the Tioga County town is an absolute must see, ranking in the same space with towns in Vermont like Stowe (5) and Montpelier (2).  The only other town in Pennsylvania to make the list at #28  is Milford, a small town in the Poconos. Number one on the list is Pioneer Valley Massachusetts.

MAN ENTERS APARTMENT ILLEGALLY, CALLS IN A BURGLARY

A man free on bail from a misdemeanor terroristic threat charge he received in early September, was caught in the Shelley Circle apartment he was ordered to stay away from, and then lied about a burglary there.  According to police, conditions of 22 year old Jaheem Xavier Lewis’s bail were that he stay away from the Kelly Township apartment of his prior accuser.  Two days after being released, Lewis went to the apartment and was caught inside and later called police saying he was told someone broke in, and that why he was on the scene September 12th.  After police interviewed neighbors and witnesses, Lewis was charged with felony criminal trespass and misdemeanor of false reports.  His preliminary hearing in Union-Snyder County court  is November 6th.

NO THREAT AFTER STUDENT ALLEGEDLY THREATENING A SHOOTING

A tip on the Safe 2 Say platform Thursday saying that a middle school student at Mount Carmel Area School District said he wanted to “shoot up the school” has been investigated and found there is no threat to the school or any students at this time. According to the Daily Item, Mount Carmel Borough and Mount Carmel Township police departments were immediately notified by school administration after a student allegedly made the threatening comment online. Mount Carmel Area School District Superintendent Pete Cheddar said there was police presence in the district buildings Friday as an extra precaution, and asks parents to continue to talk to their children about the dangers of making threats, or kidding about dangerous behavior.

ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE POLICY FORUM FOR THE PUBLIC

The DEP is holding a meeting this week in Ranshaw for public comment on their Interim Final Environmental Justice Policy.  According to the News Item, the agency will meet in the Brady Fire Company banquet hall on  Maple St. Thursday from 6 to 8pm.  There will also be virtual meetings this Wednesday and on Wednesday October 25th, both from 5 to 7 p.m. Register and get information at  dep.pa.gov/EJPolicyRevision. The Interim Final Environmental Justice Policy is an outline of procedures and actions that the Department may take to meet the requirements of an environmental law or outline key practices of an agency or organization.

STORM SURGE PROJECT IN MIFFLINBURG

There will be a sanitation and storm sewer project along Eighth Street in Mifflinburg starting this week.  According to PennDOT, today through Thursday, a contractor working for Mifflinburg will be replacing utilities at Eighth Street at the intersection with Walnut Street.Watch for single lane conditions and flaggers on the scene between the hours of 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM, weather permitting.

MAN ACCUSED OF LOYALSOCK STABBING FOUND GUILTY

The Williamsport man on trial for the stabbing and assault of a Quick Mart employee was found guilty yesterday in Lycoming County Court of Common Pleas.  According to North Central PA dot com, the defense for 23 year old Tajhea Nyree Shuler claimed he was suffering from a mental illness, the prosecution argued that Shuler knew he had done something wrong after leaving the scene, throwing away soiled clothes, and the weapon, as well as requesting a lawyer before being questioned by police.  According to court records, Shuler’s bail was revoked and was committed to Lycoming County Prison for first-degree felony aggravated assault, simple assault, and recklessly endangering another person with a sentencing hearing December 19th.

CONTACT RATIFIED BY LYCOMING ENGINE’S UNION

A contract has been ratified at Lycoming Engines after almost 370 members of the UAW 787 Union approved the contract that is effective immediately.  According to the Sun Gazette, the 5-year contract for the company that specializes in engineering manufacturing, service and support of piston aircraft engine came about after the United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America worked without one since July.  The negotiations began in April for the Oliver Street plant that is a subsidiary of AVCO Corp, a Textron Company.

GRANT WILL ALLOW FLIGHTS FROM PENNSYLVANIA TO FLORIDA

A 500 thousand dollar federal grant is going to allow the public around the region to fly to Florida from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport again.  According to an announcement by the U.S. Department of Transportation the funds will restore and support non-stop passenger air service to and from Fort Myers, Orlando, Sarasota and/or Tampa in a new agreement with Avelo Airlines.  The grants are possible under the Small Community Air Service Development Program that assists with air service improvements in 16 states.

OPEN HOUSE SOON AT CU-LOCK HAVEN

Prospective students of Commonwealth University-Lock Haven are encouraged to attend an open house next Saturday, October 14th in the Student Recreation Center.  According to the school, the interactive program starts at 9am with registration and continues until 1pm.  The program helps students get more familiar about what The Haven has to offer as well as hear from the admissions team, current students, faculty, and others, plus find out more about financial aid and scholarships, student life, housing, dining, downtown Lock Haven, and more. DETAILS ABOUT HOMICIDE SUSPECT IN KNOXVILLE

Mansfield State police have released information about the alleged homicide of a Knoxville, PA woman at a South Water Street apartment Friday morning.  According to the Sun Gazette, 21 year old Brendan T. York is in custody after he allegedly shot 19 year old Layanah Griffin with an AR-style rifle that he left at the scene before fleeing.  Witnesses who heard shouting and the single gunshot, told police they saw York wipe his hands on the grass at about 2:40am. York is now incarcerated without bail on charges of homicide, aggravated assault and possession of an instrument of crime.

POLICE NEED HELP IDENTIFYING BODY FOUND IN RIVER

A body was found in the Susquehanna River on Saturday in Bradford County, and State police are asking for help from the public identifying the man.  According to state police, the man’s remains were discovered around 1pm in the area of Rummerfield Creek Road.  Authorities say the cause of death is considered drowning and not suspicious at this time.  The man is approximately 5’8”, 40 years old wearing blue jeans and a black T-shirt.  If you have any information call the Towanda Criminal Investigation Unit (570-265-2186).

DCNR and PennDOT, the Fish and Boat Commission and Chesapeake Bay Foundation have announced a new Eastern Hellbender license plate.  According to Senator Gen Yaw, who sponsored the bill to designate the Eastern Hellbender as the first official State Amphibian in 2019, the Wild Resource Conservation Program allows citizens to help support the management of Pennsylvania’s wild resources with tax deductible donations through the state license plate program. Eastern hellbenders are the largest salamanders in the U.S., with some reaching a weight of over two pounds and reaching two feet long, and the species is a symbol for water quality and conservation in the Commonwealth.

RIDE SUNDAY TO FUND HAILEY BILBAY SCHOLARSHIP

The first annual ride to raise funds for a new Loyalsock High School scholarship is set to take place this Sunday, October 8th for a local student who died in an automobile accident on Northway Road on January 6th of this year. Friends and family of Hailey Bilbay will host the event that will start at the Hepburn Lycoming Ballfield in Cogan Station and travel to the Hepburn Volunteer fire company, where activities along with a meal, auction, and 50/50 drawing will take place.  Register Sunday morning at 9am at the ballfield with kickstands up at 11am.

CITY COUNCIL DECIDES TO TABLE CITY HALL BID DECISION

The fate of the Williamsport City Hall building remains open-ended for now after City Council decided to table their decision.  Many in the community have been watching and waiting to know the outcome, but according to the Sun Gazette, council voted 6-1 approving the vote to table or delay deciding about the high bid of five hundred fifty five thousand, five hundred dollars submitted by JBas Realty of Jessup.  Councilman Jon Mackey voted no about the delay.  There is no word at this time how long City Council wants to wait to make a definitive decision about the historic building on West Fourth Street in downtown Williamsport.

WOODWARD TOWNSHIP SUPERVISORS FACE BOTH SIDES OF ISSUE

A proposal to add seasonal campsites near Antlers Lane where a restaurant and boat launch are located in Woodward Township, is getting pushback from residents, who recently told the township supervisors they worry about the potential for noise and unsafe traffic for residents  According to the Sun Gazette, Woodward Township supervisors agreed on the need for restrictive conditions going forward as to not burden neighbors, but see their role as also allowing the owners of the property who want to add 50-plus sites to find acceptable the conditions which might be created.  The next meeting of the supervisors in Woodward Township will be 6 pm on October 11th.

LOCK HAVEN BRIDGE TO CLOSE OVERNIGHT THIS WEEKEND

Flemington Bridge will be closed during overnight hours this weekend and motorists will be required to use a detour.  According to PennDOT, the Flemington Bridge along Route 150 near Lock Haven will close Saturday night at 8pm until 6am Sunday, 8pm Sunday through 6am Monday, and 8pm Monday through 6am Tuesday.  Work to be completed includes the removal of the painters containment as they wrap up the preservation project that  will extend the life of this bridge and two others in Clinton County.

FEDERAL EMERGENCY TEST NEXT WEEK

A test of the federal government’s nationwide Emergency Alert System and Wireless Emergency Alerts will take place next week for the entire public.  According to the Daily Item, Danville police say on Wednesday October 4th cell towers will broadcast the test beginning at 2:20pm.  It will continue for about 30 minutes, but wireless devices should only receive one notification.  The test should be accompanied by a unique tone and vibration.  Police say the test is necessary to minimize confusion and maximize the public safety value of it.

MAN ARRESTED FOR PUNCHING OFFICER, RESISTING ARREST

A Beech Creek man had an altercation with police after they came to his house to perform a well-check on his minor child who was in his home September 17th.  According to North Central PA dot com, police say the mother of the child was with police and was allowed to talk to her daughter who was deemed safe and came from inside the home. An argument began between 40 year old Joshua Lee Furl’s wife and the mother, and Furl came outside.  After refusing to return inside, Furl punched an officer at the 500 block of Bald Eagle Street, breaking his glasses.  He continued to resist arrest while being taken into custody. He was charged with aggravated assault and public drunkenness and was released on 40 thousand dollars unsecured bail.

CASH STOLEN FROM SELF-CHECKOUT

A shopper at the Selinsgrove Walmart September 23rd left their cash back in the self-checkout machine and someone stole it.  According to North Central PA dot com, the victim went back to the store a short time after realizing they forgot the cash and it was gone.  Now the Selinsgrove state police are investigating and ask that if anyone has any information about the theft to contact state police at 570-374-8145.

PHEASANT STOCKING TO START IN PENNSYLVANIA

Stocking of pheasants will start next week as the PA Game Commission works across the state to release 237 thousand ring- necked pheasants throughout the hunting seasons.  The birds for eastern Pennsylvania are raised at the Loyalsock State Game Farm, in Lycoming County.  Several weekly rounds of release take place in the North Central PA region; which includes Centre, Clearfield, Clinton, Elk, Lycoming, McKean, Potter, Tioga and Union Counties.  A total of 3 thousand-thirty birds will be released regularly in Lycoming County from October 5th through January 3rd and 4th.

ANNUAL ROUTE 192 CLEAN-UP NEXT MONTH

The public is invited to Mifflinburg’s annual clean-up of Route 192 in Union County on October 21st.  According to the Daily Item, the event that is hosted by the Friends of R.B. Winter Annual Autumn Clean Up of Route 192 will meet at 9am at the Environmental learning center, where they will provide gloves and bags and safety vests, but volunteers are asked to bring water and weather appropriate clothes.  Register for the event before October 18th online at friendsofrbwinter.org/cleanup.
