HUGHESVILLE MAN THREATENS EX-GIRLFRIEND WITH GUN

A man from Hughesville threatened a woman with a gun after he broke into her home early yesterday.  According to North Central PA dot com, 26 year old Dyllyn Dakota Laird allegedly broke into the home on the 700 block of Hall Street around 2am November 7th by climbing in a window.  Police say he showed a handgun while threatening his ex-girlfriend who had previously filed a PFA against Laird. He is being charged with burglary, criminal trespassing, simple assault, reckless endangerment, and terroristic threats. He is in Lycoming County Prion under 100 thousand dollars bail.

KULPMONT ROBBERY HAS POLICE SEARCHING FOR SUSPECT

After an alleged robbery at a Kulpmont convenience store, police are searching for suspects. According to the New Item, scanner reports around 8pm Wednesday said that after the theft at Sunoco at Chestnut and Sixth streets was reported, police were seen in a brief pursuit of a vehicle in the area.  Later witnesses say police and a K9 unit was at a residence in the 600 block of Spruce Street, but no word on if a suspect has been taken into custody.

MCCORMICK FLIPS US SENATE SEAT FOR REPUBLICANS

The pivotal US Senate seat previously held by Senator Bob Casey has been flipped and David McCormick former CEO of the world’s largest hedge fund won in a delayed call of the seat.  According to the Associated Press, McCormick’s victory d bolsters the Republicans’ majority in the Senate, which they won from Democratic control this week. By about 3:40 a.m. ET on Friday, McCormick was ahead by more than 34,000 votes with 98 percent of votes counted. McCormick has 49 percent of the vote, while Casey has 48.5 percent. Previously Senator Casey had won six statewide general elections going back to 1996, and did not concede Thursday.

TRAIN RIDES FOR VETERANS IN LEWISBURG SATURDAY

The public is invited to ride North Shore Railroad’s two newly dedicated military units this Saturday in Lewisburg.  According to officials from the rail company, everyone is invited to honor and support veterans during a line-up of trips for the Inaugural Veterans Benefit Voyage beginning at Huffnagle park.  Rides last about an hour and you can sign up for several times and get tickets at NSHR.com. Proceeds benefit Expedition Orange which raises awareness for Vietnam veterans impacted by Agent Orange and Lycoming County Hometown Heroes, providing financial assistance to veterans and their families during times of need. 

TROY MAN ARRESTED AT DANDY MINI MART

A man from Troy with a suspended license wanted in a criminal trespassing incident October 28th was apprehended inside a Wysox mini mart and arrested for drug charges after his vehicle was searched.  According to Towanda State police, 45 year old Dereck Chad Baldwin was wanted by police for the previous incident and the suspected vehicle was seen at the Dandy Mini Mart in the 23000 block of State Route 6.  Troopers arrested Baldwin and searched his 2009 blue Chevrolet Cobalt mwhere they found methamphetamine, heroin and drug paraphernalia. No bail was listed for Balwin who has a preliminary hearing next month.

WOMAN STOPPED FOR ILLEGAL WINDOW TINT ARREST FOR DRUGS

A 30 year old woman from Delaware County was stopped for illegal window tint at the 800 block of Sheridan Street in Williamsport and is facing drug charges after a search of her car.  According to the Sun Gazette, Williamsport City police pulled Alyssa Leslie of Darby over around midnight on October 12th and upon noticing a marijuana vape pen, requested consent to search the car; which was granted.  Police found in the 2008 Cadillac Escalade, 21 grams of marijuana and a loaded handgun which had an expired permit.  Leslie was charged with felony carrying a firearm without a license, possession of drugs and other summary offenses.  She was taken into custody but waived her preliminary hearing and posted 10 thousand dollars bail.

WALKING TO RAISE MONEY FOR MILITARY SHARE

Today is the last day of a three-day walk and fundraising effort sponsored by the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank to support veterans, military members, and their families, plus raise awareness about hunger in the region.  According to North Cetnral AP dot com, the goal is 25 thousand dollars to support MilitaryShare, a Fresh Express program of the food bank, providing nutritious food to veterans and active-duty military personnel.  Participants are walking 30 miles across Snyder, Northumberland, Union, Montour, Columbia, and Lycoming Counties while pushing a shopping cart.  There is a wrap-up event at VFW Post #7863 on Shaffer St., Williamsport from 3 til 7pm today.  You can make a donation at centralpafoodbank.org.

 DENTAL CARE FOR VETS

Veterans can call a Watsontown dentist this morning to make an appointment for free needed dental care. According to Carl Jenkins Dentistry, they are donating their time to provide the free cleanings and fillings to give back to the veterans who served us.  They will begin taking calls for appointments beginning at 7am at 538-5005.  Those interested in finding out more can reach out on social media, sending a personal message to Carl Jenkins Dentistry on Facebook on Main Street in Watsontown or call 538-5005.

BRUSH FIRE NEAR ELIMSPORT WEDNESDAY

It was a brush fire that brought multiple fire companies to Washington Township yesterday.  According to PennDOT, the fire caused Sulphur Springs Road (Route 554) in Lycoming County to be closed yesterday afternoon with a detour of traffic on Route 15 south.  Fire officials say the brush fire spanned about 1 to 1 and a half acres in size on the mountainside overlooking the village of Elimsport.  Water trucks were brought in and companies from Washington Township,  Clinton Township, and Nippenose Valley fought the blaze which was challenging in the rocky terrain.  511pa.com shows the road re-opened today.

CO-DEFENDANT MOTHER SENTENCED IN SEXUAL ABUSE CASE

The 6 year old victim’s mother accused of being an accomplice in the sex abuse case against convicted rapist Marcus McDaniel and plead guilty to the charges last summer, was sentenced to 267 and 534 months in prison this week.  The defense attorney for Michelle Strayer attempted to show she was a victim in the case, with her mother and another family member speaking at the trial in support of leniency, and citing that a PFA filed by Strayer against McDaniel was denied.  McDaniel was sentenced after his October 2023 trial to more than 60 years in prison in February.  Strayer will get 203 days credit for time served, and will be required to serve three years of supervised probation upon her release.

SENATE RACE IN PA

After Election Day in the Lycoming County, the Senate race ballots report Republican Dave McCormick recveived over 68 percent of the vote to the 29 percent by incumbent Democratic Senator Bob Casey.  Statewide, the race between Casey and McCormick is one of the most closely watched races as Republicans look like they could flip control of the seat in their bid to take control of the Senate. The ballot count is officially too close to call with just 4 tenths of a percent favoring McCormick. An automatic recount is established in Pennsylvania when the race falls within 5 tenths of a percent.

SOBER SKATE NIGHT IN NOVEMBER

A free sober skate night is planned for the end of November by the Susquehanna Valley Mediation’s Families in Recovery program.  According to North Central PA dot com, Families in Recovery partnered with Pik Rite Inc. to  hold a free sober roller skating night to give people coming out of addiction an opportunity to spend time with loved ones in a safe environment in addition to meeting other Families in Recovery.  The event is Novmber 30th at Sunset Skating Rink, on North Susquehanna Trail in Shamokin Dam.  Get details about the sober skate night by emailing [email protected].

BAIL MODIFIED FOR SUSPECTS WHO RELEASED MINK

The suspects from Massachusetts who were incarcerated after their arrest for releasing over 600 mink from a fur farm in Northumberland County had their bail modified in district court this week.  According to the Daily tiem, 25 year old  Christopher Legere, and co-defendant 27 year old  Cara Mitrano, originally were jailed under 150 thousand dollars bail and required to remain in PA if they could post bail.  Now, President Judge Paige Rosini ruled they could post 15 thousand dollars bail and vacated the ruling that they must stay local.  Upon their release, they will both be required to report to probation twice a month, either in person or by video or other electronic method.  Legere and Mitrano face felony eco-terrorism charges.

TURBOTVILLE MAN ARRESTED FOR STRANGULATION

A man from Turbotville is facing charges after police say he attempted to strangle his wife in front of his children Octoiber 26th.  According to North Central PA dot com, 39 year old Timothy Michael Eck admitted to the abuse of his wife and one child who attempted to intervene on her mother’s behalf.  Police were called to the home in the 800 block of Lycoming Mall Drive in Muncy after Eck allegedly attacked his wife over making food for the children.  He has been charged with strangulation, simple assault, and harassment. He posted $50,000 monetary bail through a bondsman.

BURN BAN EXTENDED TO STATE GAME LANDS

The burn ban that has been announced in Williamsport city Old Lycoming Township, areas of Northumberland County and starting tonight in Elkland township in Sullivan County, has now been extended to State game lands.  According to the state Game Commission, they issued a temporary ban on any burning on game lands, and the Game commission also placed campfire bans in state parks since the risk of forest fire threat is too high during this fall archery deer season and turkey season.

UPMC SEEKING BLANKET DONATIONS

In partnership with the We Honor veterans program, UPMC is requesting donations of home made blankets to honor those who served this Veteran’s Day.  According to UPMC Home Healthcare of Central PA and Family Hospice,  patriotic-themed blankets given to veterans help them feel recognized and appreciated during hospice care.  New quilted, knotted and crocheted  52”x76” (preferably cotton)  blankets can be dropped off at UPMC Williamsport Divine Providence Campus,  on Grampian Blvd during office hours.  Call for information 570-320-7691.

DONALD TRUMP IS PRESIDENT-ELECT

According to unofficial election results from Lyco dot org, Former President Donald J Trump won in Lycoming County with just over 70 percent of the vote after all 81 precincts have reported their results.  The Associated Press called the race in the Commonwealth this morning with over 96 percent of precincts reported across the state and the 19 electoral votes unofficially going to Trump. After unofficial returns in the senate have been tallied, Republican Dave McCormick garnered over 68 percent of the vote to the 29 percent by incumbent Senator Bob Casey.

SUSPICIOUS FIRES STARTED IN WILLIAMSPORT

A dumpster fire that has been deemed suspicious brought emergency crews out Monday night to Seth Street, just north of West Fourth where trash was on fire with flames shooting 20 feet into the air.  According to the Sun Gazette, there has been a rash of fires and vandalism with a vehicle fire reported early Monday in the parking lot of the Pajama Factory after a Democratic gathering was at the facility Sunday night.  Two other vehicles were allegedly set on fire in a parking garage in downtown Williamsport, a couch was reported to be set on fire near Vine Avenue and four separate brush fires were set in a wooded area south of the 1300 block of West Third Street Monday afternoon.  Police continue an investigation.

ARSON CHARGES FOR WILLIAMSPORT MAN

A Williamsport man was charged with arson in September after debris he was burning on his property at 397 Bougainville Road that he thought was extinguished, ignited a few days later.  According to the Sun Gazette, 34 year old Matthew Jon Wagner told police investigating the blaze that he didn’t report the fire because he thought it was minor and he didn’t want to be in the news.  Wagner was arraigned after September 6th but failed to appear for his preliminary hearing in Lycoming County.  A warrant was issued for his arrest.

TEMPORARY BURN BAN IN ELKLAND TOWNSHIP

The Elkland Township Supervisors has announced a temporary burn ban for the  township this week after it was approved at Monday night’s meeting.  Temporary Burn Ban Resolution 2024-06 goes into effect Wednesday, November 6th at 8pm, and prohibits open burning.  Residents are not allowed to burn any combustible material (garbage, leaves, grass, twigs, litter, paper, vegetative matter involved with land clearing, or any sort of debris) out-of-doors either in a burn barrel or on the ground.  The ban starting tomorrow night is in effect for 30 days.  The use of propane or gas stoves, charcoal briquette grills and the  safe disposal of used charcoal, or the use of tobacco in any form is still permitted.

STATE ELECTIONS FAVORED REPUBLICANS

Republicans in Pennsylvania government fared well last night with most ballots counted in the region.  According to election results at Lyco.org, Representative Dan Mueser of Dallas, and GT Thompson of Howard are unofficially set for re-election, along with State Senator Gene Yaw who defeated Democratic challenger Kim Pitcher of Bradford County.  Incumbent state Treasurer Stacy Garrity defeated Democrat Erin McClelland with over 71 percent of the vote.  Incumbent state Auditor General Tim DeFoor defeated state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta of Philadelphia, the Democratic nominee.  For Attorney General, Dave Sunday garnered just over 69 percent of the vote over former state Auditor General Eugene DePasquale.

SHOOTING DEATH INVESTIGATION IN WILLIAMSPORT

An investigation of a death by gunshot last weekend has been opened by Williamsport Police.  According to 570 News on the Go 39-year-old Reagan Pyle was found with a fatal gunshot wound around 2pm Saturday a second-floor apartment in the 400 block of Grant Street after police were called for gunshots and a deceased person.  If you have any information about Pyle or the circustances surrounding the incident use the “Submit a tip” link at Lycoming.crimewatchpa.com.

BUILDING COLLAPSE IN SHAMOKIN

Shamokin City officials shut down Route 61 Tuesday after a vacant property at 309 E. Sunbury St collapsed inside itself and caused residents to evacuate out of an abundance of caution.  According to the News Item, the East Sunbury Street location is owned by ALK Construction Group who had plans to renovate the property but find that now demolition is recommended by the city. The road reopened about 90 minutes after the collapse from the third floor to the first floor with fencing in place around the sidewalk to keep pedestrians from passing.  A decision on what to do with the building is pending.

FREE EMT COURSE OFFERED IN TIOGA COUNTY

Tioga County residents can benefit from a special cost arrangement with  Northern Pennsylvania Regional College’s Workforce Development department who are offering EMT training.  Those interested can sign up for the 350 dollar course and upon successful completion of the course the money will be refunded.  The class begins January 6th and continues meeting at the Mansfield Hose company facility on 381 South Main Street in Mansfield every Monday and Wednesday through June 25th.  Space is limited to 24 individuals  and registration continues through December 23rd.  Get details at NPRCevents.org.

TARGET EMPLOYEE DIES IN WORKPLACE ACCIDENT

An employee at Target on South Lycoming Mall Road was killed when she was pinned between a portion of the machinery she was operating and a door  frame Saturday morning.  According to the Sun Gazette, the Lycoming County Coroner determined 26 year old Brianna Burley-Inners of South Williamsport was the victim in the work accident that was not seen by any of the employees at the store which was closed  at the time.  State police say Burley-Innes was last seen by co-workers at 11:30pm Friday and when she didn’t respond to a radio call at midnight when employees were clocking out, they discovered her on the manlift.  They called 911 and freed the woman, immediately starting resuscitation, but even efforts by paramedics from UPMC & Pennnsdale volunteer firefighters -when they arrived-were unsuccessful.  Authorities say there’s no evidence of suspicious activity.

INVESTIGATION OPENS ON POLITICAL VANDALISM

An investigation has started into alleged politically motivated vandalism that happened early Monday in a parking lot outside of the pajama factory at 1307 Park Ave., where a Democratic voting party event was held Sunday night.  According to the Sun Gazette, Williamsport Bureau of police say they are looking for leads after reports were called in about 4am Monday about a pick-up truck that was spray painted with the front window smashed with a cinderblock.  Police say the interior of the vehicle was shouldering like someone tried to ignite it.  If you have information about the incident call 570-327-7560.

NEW SEPARATE QUIET ROOM AT WILLIAMSPORT LIBRARY

There is a new quiet room available for k-12 students and their guardians or teachers at the James V. Brown Library in Williamsport.  According to the  library,  the room is ideal for studying, exams or evaluations  and is located on the second-floor teen/tween area, and has a table and chairs for up to four people.  A request to use the room can be done online up to 30 days in advance.  If no on eis u sing the room it can reserved on a walk-in basis for up to 3 hours at a time.  Find out more online at  jvbrown.edu/meeting-rooms.

POLLING PLACE  REMINDERS ON ELECTION DAY

Polls will open at 7am this morning and will be open until 8pm this evening.  Sample ballots are available for each precinct in Lycoming County at Lyco dot org forward slash vote,  as well as the update location of every polling place for the November 5th Election.  According to the Sun Gazette, Director of Elections in Lycoming County, Forrest Lehman says he expects high turn out today and asks for patience.  He says as long as you’re in line to cast a vote at the polls by 8pm you will be able to cast your vote.

FORMER PRINCIPAL’S TRIAL TO BE POSTPONED

A key witness is unavailable in the trial a former Williamsport Area School District high school principal facing sex charges so his trial will be postponed.  According to North Central PA dot com, needing the testimony of a person who is unavailable this week and the need to add a day to the trial schedule for Roger Freed’s trial means it is now being pushed to December at the Lycoming County Courthouse.  A jury was selected last week , but they will be released and new jury will be selected closer to the trial date.  Freed was arraigned in June of 2022 on the charges for being sexually involved with a student from 2015 until 2022.  He is free on $175,000 unsecured bail.

INSURANCE FRAUD CHARGE FOR MILLMONT WOMAN

A Millmont woman was charged with felony insurance fraud and misdemeanor making false statements after she falsely reported that someone backed into her car earlier this year.  According to the Daily Item, 52 year old Heather Lynn Klose was observed by officers performing traffic control on June 28th allegedly backing into a building at 407 Chestnut St in Mifflinburg.  Klose later reported that a hit and run accident happened in the parking lot of First Evangelical Lutheran Church on Market Street did the damage to her vehicle.  After an investigation, police informed Klose’s insurance company about the fraud following their payment of over 35 hundred dollars for her claim.  Klose was arraigned on October 25th for the charges and has a preliminary hearing in December.

ELECTION DAY REQUEST FROM ELECTION DIRECTOR

Election Day has arrived the Director of elections in Lycoming County has made statements requesting that voters pack their patience when they come to vote tomorrow.  According to the Sun Gazette, director Forrest Lehman anticipates long lines first thing in the morning and askes that those waiting in the voting lines consider the challenging work volunteer poll workers are doing administering the policies, procedures, and laws that govern elections the way the county’s instructed them.  Lehman says that clothing with messages on it is protected by the voter’s First Amendment rights but there should be no active discussion on who to vote for or against while at the polls.  Campaigners and signs promoting any candidate are required to remain 10 feet from the door. 

WINTER FISHING PROGRAM NEXT WEEK WITH TROUT UNLIMITED

The Trout Unlimited Susquehanna Chapter is inviting the public to their next meeting November 13th to attend a program presented by Robert McCullough III about fishing at night and during the winter.  The meeting is at the Covenant Central Presbyterian Church on West Fourth Street in Williamsport.  McCullough will share experiences he has had and lead a question and answer session.  He is now retired, but served as a Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission Deputy Fish Warden for 17 years.
