VOTING TO GO ABOVE THE INDEX

Though saying this doesn’t mean it will happen, ,the South Williamsport School Board went ahead and voted to petition the state to allow them to go over the Act 1 index in case a tax hike is needed in the district for the 2019-2020 budget.  The Act 1 index allows the district to institute an increase of 3.2% which is .5 mills.  The district, looking at increased costs and a projected deficit of $479,000 is looking at more like a .53 mill increase.  District officials do say they have voted to go above the index 8 of the past 12 years, but have only had to go above it twice.

COLD, SLIPPERY, SCHOOL DELAYS

Watch for slippery spots this morning, especially if you live on a back street, back road or higher elevations.  The freezing cold temperatures are also causing issues with vehicles starting this morning and have also caused every area school district to decide on a two hour delay this morning with the exception of the Keystone Central District and Sugar Valley Charter School which are on two hour delays. You may want to warm up your vehicle and leave early for your destination.

NO CONTEST PLEA

Though not admitting his guilt, a Union County man did go to court to plead no contest to two counts of statutory sexual assault and will fae 4 to 20 years in prison.  29 year old William Waltman of Millmont was arrested back in December of 2017 for the summer of 2017 rapes of a 12 year old girl at least four times.  Due to the plea agreement, Waltman has had 18 other charges dropped.  He awaits a review by the sexual offenders assessment board before sentencing and remains jailed in lieu of $125,000 bail.

MAN ARRESTED FOR ASSAULT ON HIS GIRLFRIEND

An Old Lycoming Township man was arrested on Friday of last week for the assault on his girlfriend which occurred earlier in the week.  Old Lycoming Police say that 20 year old Meghan McCloskey came into the department last week with contusions on her face reporting the assault by Taylor Guinter at  their Oberlin Avenue residence which took place on Wednesday.  Guinter reportedly held her down, assaulted her, smashed her cellphone and then did not let her leave for a time.  He faces 2 counts and is jailed in lieu of $35,000 bail.

SUPERINTENDENT CONTRACT EXTENDED

The Muncy Area School District has decided that their current superintendent is the man to lead them into future which includes a planned $17 million dollar expansion at the high school.  The school board last night unanimously approved a 5 year contract extension for Dr. Craig Skaluba, following a satisfactory evaluation of his job there.  The extension brings with it a pay increase of 1 ½ percent. Skaluba will earn a salary of $133,800 dollars.

SAFE2SAY TIP LINE

Since it’s launch on January 14th, a new tipline created by the state of Pennsylvania to pass on possible school threats was used more than 400 times in it’s first five days.  The Safe2say tipline was created by the legislature’s Act 44 with the attorney general provided $600,000 to launch it.  The attorney general’s office was not immediately prepared to detail how many of the tips revealed actual threats.  The number for the tipline is 1-844-723-3729..  the website..www.safe2saypa.org and there is also a smartphone app.

SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT REPORTS SCAM

Snyder County residents are getting calls from the Sheriff’s Department there telling them, they have warrants out on them, but that a payment will make them go away, except, it’s not the sheriff’s Department calling them.  Officials say residents are receiving spoofing phone calls from the departments 570-837-3311 number and that the department does not request payment over the phone to make warrants go away.  They tell anyone if they receive a call from that number to immediately hang up and call it back to make sure you are talking to the office.

COLD FRIGID WEATHER

Waking up to frigid temperatures this morning in the single digits. There is still plenty of snow and ice on the ground especially on back roads and in the higher elevations.   The state has lifted all vehicle restrictions on highways across the commonwealth and speed limits have been put back to normal. You are reminded though that is you are headed out this morning and you have not done so yet, please clean off your vehicle completely, and take it easy.  Leave early for your destination this morning.

TROUT RUN CRASH TAKE MAN’S LIFE

Saturday’s weather contributed to a fatal crash in Trout Run on Saturday afternoon.  The crash happened around 3:30 in the 1800 block of State Route 14 North in Lewis Township as a vehicle driven by 82 year old John Covert of Ralston failed to negotiate a curve and slid off the roadway striking a rock covered embankment.  The car then rolled onto it’s driver’s side.  Covert was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, 78 year old Jean Covert of Ralston was taken UPMC Susquehanna Williamsport Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. Her condition not released.

BURGLARY INVESTIGATION

State police in Montoursville are investigating the burglary at a residence in Muncy Creek Township which occurred late last year.  Police say that someone entered an unlocked door behind the home along Sterling Drive and got into a large shed, taking a firearm as well as several tools.  Total loss was more than $2,000 dollars.  Anyone with information is asked to contact State Police in Montoursville at 5709-368-5700.

POLICE TURN DOWN CUT IN PAY INCREASE

A suggested cut in pay increases for Williamsport City Police has been shot down by the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge. In a vote taken last week, a majority of officers voted against a suggestion that they take a 2% pay raise instead of a 3% raise in the coming year.  Mayor Campana had suggested the reduction in order to save about $125,000 on a city budget which is stretched to the limit.  Campana says that the no vote could contribute to a large tax hike in 2020 for city residents.  City police are in the middle of a negotiated four year contract.

TWO CHARGED WITH OPERATING METH LAB

Two persons were charged last week with operating a meth lab in the city of Williamsport which was found back at the end of December.  34 year old Michael Puch and 35 year old Jennifer Berkebile of Williamsport were reportedly cooking meth in an apartment at Newberry Estates when a woman stopped by for a surprise visit.  The two did not live there but were reportedly being allowed to stay there while the tenant was away.  They were arrested this week on several charges. Berkebile is jailed in lieu of $100,000 bail, Puch in lieu of $150,000 bail.

FREIDENBERG WOULD LIKE MARINO’S SEAT

A Centre County man has announced his intentions to run in the special election to replace 12th district congressman Tom Marino who resigned last week.  Marc Fridenberg, an democrat who lost in the fall to Marino who won a fourth term in Washington has announced that he would like to be the Democratic candidate in the special election which will be held within 60 days.  Freidenberg would have to be nominated by the Democratic Committee to be places on the ballot.  Marino is resigning to take a job in the private sector.

CANDIDATE FOR LYCOMING COUNTY COMMISSIONER ANNOUNCES

A former Lycoming County Probation officer has his sights set on becoming County Commissioner.  Scott Metzger announced late last week that he will seek the Republican nomination in the May 21st primary election to run on the ballot on the fall for one of three Commissioner spots.  Metzger, from Montoursville plans to campaign on three crucial areas while seeking the nomination.  They are Public Safety, taxes and job creation.  No word yet on if the two incumbent republican commissioners are running for re-election.

MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY EVENTS

A week long of events for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day began on Saturday in the city of Williamsport with a Peace Walk and a service which followed honoring the late doctor’s work as well as that of local Beloved Community Council Volunteer Richard James who died early last year.  The walk took left from the First Church of Christ United Methodist Church and went about a mile returning to the church.  There are several events planned for this week and more information can be found on the Beloved Community Council’s Facebook page.

MARINO TO RESIGN

12th district Congressman Tom Marino of Cogan  Station has decided to resign.  In a statement released yesterday, Marino announced the resignation, saying he was going to work in the private sector, saying that he can use both his legal and business experience to create jobs around the country.  The congressman was just elected to his fourth term in Washington.  His last day will be next Wednesday.  A special election will have to take place within 60 days.

STORM WARNING IN EFFECT

A winter storm warning is officially in effect across our entire area with snow on the way.  A foot or more could fall depending on temperature.  Some places could also see freezing rain, causing ice to form.  Penn DOT is at ready and will have trucks out around the clock trying to keep the roadways clear.  PPL also says they have mobilized in case of power outages due to the heavy snow and ice.  We will have weather updates throughout the weekend, as well as cancellations, postponements and any other weather related information.

GROVES SENTENCED IN CLINTON COUNTY

It’s ten to 20 years in state prison for Loyd Groves who was found guilty of third degree murder in Clinton County Court last month for the 1991 killing of Kathy Heckel of Lock Haven.  Groves was sentenced by visiting judge Kenneth Brown of Lycoming County yesterday in Clinton County court.  The sentence is the maximum one for third degree murder under 1991 sentencing guidelines.  Groves has not accepted responsibility for the woman’s murder.

TWO ARRESTED FOR BURGLARIES

A Jersey Shore woman and a Wisconsin man have been arrested for the burglaries of two businesses this past week in Woodward Township in Lycoming County.  State police say that 43 year old Charles Buday of Milwaukee Wisconsin broke into the Lewis Veterinary Clinic on January 15th and took a black filing cabinet.  30 year old Rachel Hamilton has also been charged with participating in the burglary.  Buday was also caught on video for breaking into a business along Antler’s Lane on the 14th.

PLEA AGREEMENT IN DOUBLE HOMICIDE

A plea agreement earlier this week by one of three men involved in a double homicide in the city of Williamsport in October of 2016.  PennLive.com has reported that on Monday 32 year old Casey Wilson pleaded guilty to 2 counts of third degree murder bringing 25-50 year sentences.  He has also agreed to testify against his co-defendants, Joseph Coleman Jr. and Jordan Rawls. The three allegedly shot and killed 25 year old Shane Wright and his mother 50 year old Kristine Kibler during a robbery attempt at their Newberry home.

DRUG ARREST IN CITY

A Williamsport man was arrested and charged with several counts on Monday following a police search of his Memorial Avenue home.  Police say they found 18 bags of heroin and 7 grams of cocaine as well as an illegal firearm at 49 year old Arthur Smith’s home.  He is charged with possession with intent to deliver as well as a convicted felon not to possess a firearm and is jailed in lieu of $150,000 bail.

FUNDING FOR 6 COUNTY DISTRICTS

6 Lycoming County School Districts will receive funding to expand computer science classes and teacher training thanks to state grant money.  23rd district State Senator Gene Yaw says Governor Wolf’s new PAsmart Initiative will provide $20 million dollars statewide to bring high-quality computer science and STEM education as well as professional development for teachers.  East Lycoming, Jersey Shore, Loyalsock Montoursville, Muncy and South Williamsport districts will receive $35,000.

KILGUS TO RUN FOR JUDGE

A Lycoming County Attorney will take a shot at becoming a Judge on the County Court of Common Pleas.  Mary Kilgus has announced that she will run for the seat being vacated by Judge Richard Gray.  Kilgus points to her experience as a Lycoming County prosecutor from 2006-2012 as a big part of her qualifications.  Since then Kilgus has had her own private practice.

WORK ON BRIDGE

There could be a slow down on the Route 15 river bridge between Williamsport and South Williamsport today.  Flood debris removal is planned between the hours of 9am and 3pm today which means that flag persons will be on the bridge directing traffic.  There could be delays and motorists should be alert and drive with caution through that workzone.

TWO FIRES RULED AS ARSON

Fire investigators have ruled that two city fires within a week of each other late last year were intentionally set.  The first was on November 25th, a fire which destroyed a home occupied by Freddie Jones at 906 Seneca Avenue in Newberry  The second was on December 2nd at an apartment house at 1524-1536 Memorial Avenue which briefly trapped one of the tenants and her great grandson before they were rescued of a balcony. That fire caused upwards of $100,000 in damage.  Anyone with information is asked to Agent Trent Peacock at 570-327-7575.

REPORT OF SHOTS FIRED

Williamsport City police were called out before midnight to a report of possible shots fired in the Newberry section of the city.  Units were dispatched to the 100 block of Laurel Run Circle.  The county 911 center received multiple callers and there was a report of a vehicle leavin the area at a high rate of speed.  No word on if anyone was shot, or if it was indeed gunshots.  No other information is available at this time and the incident is under investigation.

CLINTON COUNTY DRUG BUST

A Clinton County man is jailed awaiting arraignment on multiple drug and weapons offenses following a raid at his mobile home yesterday by law enforcement.  Early on Wednesday morning, members of the Clinton County Drug Task Force served a search warrant on the Woodward Avenue mobile home in Woodward Township of Keith Freeman turning up methamphetamines, crack cocaine, marijuana, other drug materials, cash and five electronic stun guns.  The raid was conducted following an investigation into Freeman’s activities.

BANK ROBBERY IN BERWICK

Police in Columbia County are investigating a bank robbery which occurred in Berwick on Tuesday afternoon.  Police say that a man walked into Fulton Bank along South Poplar Street around 3pm telling employees he had a bomb and demanding money.  The man then got away on foot with an unreported amount of cash.  No one was hurt in the incident and anyone with information is asked to contact the East Central Emergency Network at 570-784-6300.

STORM IS A COMING

Our area is getting set for a storm which could dump a large amount of snow on the area this weekend.  1 to 3 inches are expected tonight into tomorrow, but a storm which is expected to start on Saturday afternoon and run into Sunday could dump a foot or more.  PennDOT and municipal crews will be at ready and will be busy trying to clear roadways and keep things moving smoothly, but you are reminded that if you don’t have to go out this weekend to stay in until things can be cleaned up,  We will keep you updated into the weekend.

COUNCIL MEETS TONIGHT

Williamsport City Council will meet tonight.  Amongst their agenda is to take a look at an ordinance which would clear up boundaries at the park in Newberry named after former mayor Phillip Preziosi.  Council will be asked to amend the ordinance over what city officials are calling a minor error.  Council will also take care of some other pretty routine items on their agenda. They meet at 7:30 in City Hall Council Chambers.

GRANT TO HELP WETLANDS PROJECT

A project at an area middle school will not only help to capture storm water runoff but will also serve as a classroom for students there.  The state has approved a $17,920 dollar gran for the Wetland Restoration Project at the Eichorn Middle School in the Lewisburg School District in Union County.  The money will go to the Union County Conservation District and will be used to enhance and expand existing wetland on the middle school property.  The site will also be used as a living laboratory for students there.

RECREATION GRANTS TO BE MADE AVAILALBLE

23rd district State Senator Gene Yaw reports that grants will soon be available to help plan, acquire and develop parks, recreation facilities, trails and help with conservation.  The money which comes from DCNR will be made available for counties, municipalities and municipal agencies, pre-qualified land trusts, non-profits and other eligible organizations.  A pre-application workshop will be held on January 20th at 10am.  To sign up applicants can visit DCNR’s Calendar of Events page on their website at events.dcnr.pa.gov.

PARK AVENUE REVITALIZATION OPEN HOUSE

Residents in the city of Williamsport interested in what is going on with the revitalization of the Park Avenue Neighborhood can attend another open house next week. A draft stabilization plan will be unveiled.  Officials are hoping to identify housing needs, the neighborhood identity, connectivity, and potential future development in the neighborhood along Park Avenue from Walnut east to Hepburn Street and from Park Avenue north to Brandon Avenue.  The open house is set for next Wednesday from 5 to 7 pm at the YMCA at 641 Walnut Street.

THREE SUSPECTS IN BEAVERTOWN BURGLARIES

Middleburg police say they have three suspects they plan on filing charges against for more than 40 burglaries in Beavertown in Snyder County the day after Christmas.  The three are 22, 18 and 16 year old males from Union County and are accused of breaking into vehicles and garages taking items including, money, guns and even bikes in the early morning hours.  It’s believed that the three also could be responsible for break-ins in both Union and Lycoming Counties as well.

FIRE STRIKES IN LIMESTONE TOWNSHIP

Fire struck in Limestone Township, Lycoming County on Monday night leaving a couple homeless.  That fire broke out in a house in the 1500 block of Route 654 owned by Walter and Joy Eck around 11pm quickly spreading through the structure.  Firefighters were able to knock down the fire within about 15 minutes but not before it caused extensive damage in excess of $100,000 dollars.  No one was injured, and it’s believed that fire started in a wood burning stove on the house.

KOZ DESIGNATIONS AWARDED

Hoping it will lead to continued economic growth and investment, the state of Pennsylvania recently announced 17 properties in our area to be designated as Keystone Opportunity Zones.  The KOZ program eliminates specific state and local taxes within designated underdeveloped and underutilized areas which can spur economic growth and investment.  10 of the properties are located in Milton, and seven more in Watsontown.  In addition, a property owned by Susquehanna Industrial Development Corporation in Selinsgrove has been given a ten year KOZ extension.

HOTEL EVACUATED

Fire struck yesterday at a Snyder County hotel, causing an evacuation there.  The fire apparently broke out in a laundry chute at the Holiday Inn Express just off the Susquehanna Trail in Hummels Wharf around 12:30 pm.  All guests and hotel staff were evacuated.  When firefighters arrived, they found that the sprinkler system has already put out the fire.  No one was injured, the extent of damage not known, and everyone was allowed back in the hotel within 45 minutes.

DRUG AND WEAPONS CHARGES FILED

A man is jailed charged with possession with intent to deliver cocaine, as well as for having an illegal weapon following an arrest in Lycoming County last week.  Following an incident in the city of Williamsport on January 9th, members with the county’s narcotics enforcement unit searched the South Williamsport home of Jermar Hines and found drugs, as well as a handgun and a shotgun there.  Hines is a convicted felon not allowed to possess a weapon.  He was arraigned and jailed in Lycoming County Prison in lieu of $150,000 bail.

NO SALE

According to a story in the Williamsport Sun Gazette, it looks like the city of Williamsport will not be selling it’s pump stations to the Williamsport Water and Sanitary Authority.  The city and the authority were working on a deal for the sale of the pumps for a million dollars, but it now looks like the authority has decided not to buy the stations located on Arch and Basin Streets.  It’s believed that some $5 million dollars in upgrades are needed to bring those pump stations up to date.  The authority has not taken a vote yet on the sale.

WOLF SWORN IN FOR SECOND TERM

Governor Tom Wolf began his second term yesterday as he was sworn in in Harrisburg. During an inaugural address, Wolf called for Pennsylvania residents to work together to form a stronger, fairer and more prosperous future.  He pointed towards his first four years as a success saying the Commonwealth has come back from being a state at a crossroads to one on a comeback.  The governor easily won re-election in November.

SUNBURY HIRES NEW CITY ADMINISTRATOR

A former Air Force Colonel and Sunbury native has a new job in the city of Sunbury.  Jody Ocker was hired on Monday night by Sunbury City Council to the new position of city administrator there.  The new position will replace that of city clerk.  The city clerk there is retiring at the end of the month. In her new position, Ocker will oversee all daily operations of city departments except for the police department.

ANOTHER CITY RESIDENT ANNOUNCED CANDIDACY

Another city resident of Williamsport has announced that he will be seeking a seat on city council.  34 year old Vincent Pulizzi, a gas and oil inspector and owner of several investment properties in the city has announced he will seek nomination to run in the fall for one of four city council seats which will be up for grabs.  Pulizzi says he wants to work to hold the line on taxes, create family sustaining jobs, fight violent crime and drugs, rebuild the infrastructure and invest in the city’s parks.

TRAFFIC STOPS TURN UP DRUGS

Two men busted on the same day in the city of Williamsport last week for drugs following vehicle stops there. Both took place on January 8th. In the first, 27 year old Tyra Golden of Williamsport, a convicted drug dealer and gang member was found with concealed heroin and cocaine on his body and jailed in lieu of $150,000 bail.  The second traffic stop resulted in a passenger, 20 year old Fareed Kale of Georgia into custody who tried to conceal, heroin, cocaine and marijuana on him. He is jailed in lieu of $90,000 bail.

ANOTHER NEW POLICE CHIEF

For the third time in a couple of months, a new police chief has been named for the city of Williamsport.  Yesterday, officer Damon Hagen was sworn in as the chief to take over for the retired David Young.  Hagen was named assistant chief a couple of weeks ago with retired officer Doc Miller set to come back to the force as the chief, but Miller decided to decline due to personal reasons.  Miller had been named after Jody Miller who was going to become chief took a job with the school district.  He has since come back to the city force.  Officer Aaron Levan was sworn in as assistant chief yesterday.

UNITED WAY TO HELP OUT GOVERNMENT WORKERS

The Lycoming County United Way has announced that they are joining with the United Way Worldwide as part of a joint effort by corporate partners, organized labor and United Way network and non-profits in an effort to alleviate problems faced by government workers in our region affected by the shutdown.  Increased calls to the 2-1-1 non emergency service hotline is expected from those seeking assistance with rent and mortgage payments, utility bills and groceries.  Officials say they will do what they can while the shutdown persists.

SCHOOL DISTRICT WILL NOT EXCEED TAX INDEX

The Jersey Shore School Board last night voted to make sure that the district does not go over the state’s Act 1 index in case they have to institute a tax increase for the next school year.  The index is 3.2% and following a presentation of figures during their meeting, the board voted not to petition the state to go over that number in case a tax increase is needed.  The district has been dealing with budgetary problems the last few years, and officials there are still working on that.

COMMISSION MEMBER REMOVED

One item on the agenda of yesterday’s Williamsport Recreation Commission Meeting centered on the return of basketball to Memorial Park in the city as well as the role of the Mayor’s committee of court monitors.  It was learned yesterday that one of those monitors has been removed from the list.  Derrick Dixon who was sentenced to a jail term in 2002 after pleading no contest for statutory sexual assault and corruption of a minor will not serve on the committee. He was removed after speaking with Mayor Campana.

TIOGA COUNTY CRASH TAKES A LIFE

A crash in Tioga County yesterday morning resulted in the death of a Wellsboro area man.  The accident happened on Route 287 at Coolidge Hollow Road in Delmar Township just before 7am as a car driven by 89 year old Dale Dutcher crossed the center line into the path of a tanker truck driven by 33 year old Justin Burton of Morris Run.  Dutcher was pronounced dead at the scene.  Burton refused treatment for minor injuries.

TRUCK CRASHES THROUGH HOME

A man escaped injury in Clinton County yesterday as a log truck came smashing through the window of his home in Swissdale.  The accident happened around 4pm as the truck drivn by Butch Miller didn’t make the curve on Route 664 and went through a large window in the front of a home owned by Jim and Joan Walizer.  Mr. Walizer was home and in another room when the accident happened. The driver was not hurt either.  No word on the extent of damage following that Clinton County crash.

GOVERNOR BEGINS SECOND TERM

Governor Tom Wolf officially begins his second term in Harrisburg today.  He will be sworn in at the capital at noon.  The Democratic Governor Wolf easily won re-election in November and says he will continue to work towards the goals he set in his first term including funding schools, protecting access to health insurance, fighting the opiod epidemic and helping to foster job growth and access, as well as working towards increased access to voting and also working towards criminal justice reform.

FIRE THIS MORNING

Firefighters were sent out in Elimsport this morning to a reported fire in a structure there.  Firefighters from Washington Township as well as Clinton Township were dispatched around 4;30 this morning to a working fire along Route 44.  The fire actually started in a garage behind the home there, and firefighters were able to knock it down quickly.  Wires were reported on the ground and arcing with PPL called in.  No one was injured, and it’s not known what caused that Elimsport fire this morning.

WORK SLATED TO BEGIN SOON

A report in this morning’s Williamsport Sun Gazette says that work is expected to begin a two year project for the East Third Street Gateway Revitalization project in the city of Williamsport in March. The work will take place on sections of East Third, East Fourth, Basin and Franklin Streets with some daylight detours in place and will finish up both years in time for the Little League World Series. Contracts are expected to be awarded later this month. And it’s hoped that the work will lead to more development in that area.

SUSPICIOUS PERSON ARRESTED

An arrest warrant was issued last week for a man from York County who it was believed was following school buses around in the Renovo area of Clinton County and when confronted about it by one witness, pulled a gun on that person.  John Meyers was arrested in York County late last week and charged with possession of an illegal firearm as well as simple assault and harassment stemming from the Clinton County incident.   He is being held in York County.

LANE RESTRICTIONS IN NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY

There will be lane restrictions beginning tomorrow on a section of Route 54 in Northumberland County.  A contractor working for PPL is replacing lines across the roadway between Boyd Station Road and Warner Road in Rush Township.  Due to that work, traffic will be reduced to a single lane under daylight flagging.  Delays are expected and motorists are asked to be alert and watch for stopped or slow moving vehicles.

CITY BUSINESSMAN ANNOUNCED CANDIDACY

With four seats up for grabs in the fall for Williamsport City Council, candidates are starting to announce their intention to seek nomination for the November election.  Late last week, city businessman Adam Yoder announced that he plans on seeking Republican nomination for one of the council seats.  Yoder, who has an engineering background says he plans on going door to door to find out what residents of the city want from their government and says he will also use social media as part of the process.

BEAVERTOWN THEFT SPREE

Police in Middleburg reported over the weekend that they are investigating a large theft spree which occurred in a 3 ½ to 4 hour period in Beavertown the morning after Christmas.  Someone broke into both vehicles and garages in the Snyder county town, taking cash, credit cards, guns and even bicycles.  They also used fire extinguishers to spray the inside of vehicles.  Police say they continue their investigation and will update their progress during a news conference in Beavertown tomorrow.  Anyone with information regarding that theft spree is to contact police in Middleburg.

MALL UP FOR SHERIFF’S SALE?

Though things are expected to be cleared up today, last week’s Lycoming County Sherriff’s sale list caused quite a splash when it was revealed that the Lycoming Mall property was on the list due to unpaid sewer bills to the Lycoming County Water and Sewer Authority.  Authority officials say putting a property on the list is standard procedure when the bills are not paid for a certain period of time.  They did not reveal how much the holding company for the mall owed.  Officials with the mall say they have a check in the mail and that the overdue bills should be paid for by today.

FOOD BANK TO HELP OUT FEDERAL WORKERS

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has stepped up to help federal workers affected by the current government shutdown.  The Food Bank has announced that employees and their families missing paychecks due to the federal shutdown and are in need of food will be eligible for distribution which will take place tomorrow. The Local Food bank hub in Williamsport at 3301 Wahoo Drive will be open from 4 to 6:30.  The food bank serves a 27 county area and it’s estimated that almost 25,00 federal workers live within that area.

INMATE CHARGED WITH ASSAULT

An inmate at the Bradford County Correctional facility faces charges of aggravated assault and related counts stemming from an assault there last week.  State police in Towanda say that on January 6th around 11am, 23 year old Jesse Blake assaulted 50 year old Todd Eccleston at the prison with an unspecified weapon.  No word on the extent of Eccleston’s injuries.  Blake remains jailed at the facility.

ROLLING ROADBLOCKS TODAY

Another set of rolling roadblocks is planned on Interstate 180 in Muncy Creek Township near the Northumberland County Line.  A PPl contractor continues work to replace utility lines and that work will take place between 9am and 3pm today.  The rolling roadblocks will be used to slow traffic in both directions while the old lines are removed and new lines installed. There will be two of them today and motorists are reminded to be alert and watch for slow moving vehicles.

MAN ARRESTED FOR REPEATED RAPE

An Eldred Township man was taken into custody yesterday, charged with the multiple rape and sexual assault of a mentally disabled woman over a ten year period.  59 year old Bruce Stewart is accused of the repeated acts he committed with the woman from 2009 up until last July when the victim reported him. Stuart faces more than 100 counts against him stemming from the incidents which took place at his home including rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, sexual assault and even a count of strangulation. He was arraigned and jailed in lieu of $100,000 bail.

MILTON WOMAN AND SON CONFIRMED VICTIMS OF MURDER/SUICIDE

It’s been confirmed that it was a Milton woman and her son who died in a murder-suicide in Lancaster County.  Authorities believe that 32 year old Nicole Welton first shot her 11 year old son, and then shot herself in a motel room in Manheim Township near Lancaster on Wednesday morning.  The boy was a fifth grade student in the Milton Area School District and district officials say they have made grief counselors available at the school for classmates.  Police in Lancaster County are investigating and have not released any information regarding a possible motive.

BASKETBALL TO RETURN TO MEMORIAL PARK

Despite questions over whether it is feasible or not to place basketball courts next to the current pickleball courts at Memorial Park in the city of Williamsport, the city has gone ahead and poured concrete for the poles and hoops, laying the foundation for the sport to return to the park there.  That occurred yesterday despite a call to hold off before a recreation commission meeting last week.  Mayor Campana who had the hoops removed nearly five years ago due to questionable behavior there has said he will have monitors on hand to make sure everything runs smoothly.

GETTING CLOSER TO SALE

City officials in Williamsport believe that they are closer to selling the city’s two pump stations to the Williamsport Water and Sanitary Authority for a million dollars.  As issue is ownership of the pump stations, but as reported in the Williamsport Sun Gazette this morning, city engineer Mark Benfer says he believes that issue can be cleared up with the Army Corps of Engineers.  The authority board would still have to vote and approval would be needed form Williamsport City Council.

PUBLIC TO SEE RESULTS OF STUDY

Lycoming County Commissioners revealed yesterday that the public will get their chance to see an in-depth analysis of the county’s financials and operations.   The $164,000 dollar study was offered by the state Department of Community and Economic Department and is designed to provide insight into how well the county is run generally and financially and provide suggestions for future changes.  County officials say half the cost could be reimbursed by the state, and the suggestions to save money should be well worth the cost.

OVERTIME COSTS CUT

Saving money in Clinton County.  A report from Clinton County Correctional Facility warden Angela Hoover says that thanks to 12 hours shifts and a full complement ot corrections officers that the facility is paying less overtime.  In fact overtime hours were cut back to 445 in the month of December compared to 836 total overtime hours in November. The 12 hour shift was recently implemented with the goal to eliminate the need for the extra hours.

MAN ARRESTED FOR ILLEGAL WEAPONS AND DRUGS

A Milton man was arrested on Wednesday evening after being spotted dropping a needle in the parking lot of a Shamokin Dam Restaurant and then entering a vehicle containing two young children.  28 year old Robert Perez-Irizarry was pulled over by police who were called by a witness who watched him drop the needle.  Inside, police found heroin, a loaded weapon the man was not allowed to possess and two children under the age of 8.  He was charged with a number of counts and jailed in lieu of $50,000 bail.

An accused killer was taken into custody yesterday and returned here last night to face the charges.  US. Marshals were able to take 30 year old Monica Burns into custody in Philadelphia yesterday morning without incident.  She is accused of stabbing to death 28 year old Ryan Jones on New Year’s morning at an apartment in the city of Williamsport.  She was returned to the city last night and arraigned t hen jailed without bail.

Extra charges have been filed against a city woman.  Jahnasia Wiggs was arrested shortly after she robbed Cupps Vacuum Center of $200 dollars on Washington Boulevard on Tuesday afternoon and jailed. Williamsport police now say that theft related charges will also be filed against Wiggs for walking into the Turkey Hill Market, also on Washington Boulevard on Monday morning and grabbing a money bag.

A woman from Milton and her son are suspected as the two who are dead following an apparent murder-suicide in Lancaster County  The bodies of a mother and her son were found dead of apparent gunshot wounds in a motel along the Harrisburg Pike in Manheim Township yesterday.  The woman has been identified through the Daily Item Newspaper as Nicole Welton of Milton.  Autopsies have been scheduled for today.

A Milton area man has been charged with terroristic threats, reckless endangerment and simple assault following an incident which occurred last week at a residence in Montour County.  State police say that around 11:15pm on January 2nd, two men showed up at the residence along Strick Road in Limestone Township to repossess an ATV vehicle.  That’s when 52 year old David Beachel walked out of the residence with a 20 gauge shotgun firing a shot in the air and then pointing the gun at the two.

Planning is already underway for school district budgets for the 2019-2020 school year, and the Loyalsock Area School District is planning ot hold the line on taxes.  The School Board yesterday voted to stay within the state’s Act 1 index, which means that even if they decided to increase taxes, that the increase would not be over 1.8%.  District officials say as it stands now they don’t plan on increasing taxes for the next school year.

The Danville High School school day was disrupted yesterday after officials received what they called a bomb and safety threat.  The threat forced the evacuation of the school yesterday morning and a search was done of the building, turning up nothing.  School resumed as normal around 11am.  District officials say they will take the threat seriously.  If found, the perpetrator will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Lock Haven’s Mayor has announced that he will not seek a second term.  William Baney III who was elected mayor in 2016 after serving two terms as city councilman has announced that he will not seek re-election this year with his term officially expiring on January 6th, 2020.  A pair of councilmen have announced their intentions to run for the job.  They are Republican Richard Conklin and Democrat Joel Long.

The Wolf Administration has announced that the state will invest in efforts to restore the flood damaged Muncy Creek in Hughesville and Wolf Township in Lycoming County.  It was announced yesterday that the DEP has awarded a 2019 Growing Greener Grant of $227,284 dollars which will go towards stabilizing 500 feet of streambank which has been eroded by numerous flood events sending sediment downstream over the past seven years.

ROBBERY INVESTIGATION CONTINUES

The investigation continues into the robbery of a convenience market in the city of Williamsport which occurred on Monday night.  Police now say that a heavy set black male, wearing a green jacket and brown hat was standing in line at the Mini Mart at 1027 High Street around 9:30 on Monday, probably waiting for the cash register to open for the customer in front of him.  When it opened, he pushed the woman out of the way and grabbed an unknown amount of cash then fled on foot.  No one was hurt.  Police are still looking for that man.

ARREST WARRANT ISSUED IN CITY MURDER

A Loyalsock Township woman is wanted for the stabbing death of a man in the city of Williamsport which occurred early on New Years morning.  Police believe that 28 year old Ryan Jones got into a fight with several people at a party in the Timberland Apartments in the city early last Tuesday morning, when 30 year old Monica Burns got out a knife and stabbed Jones.  It’s believed he then left the scene on foot and most likely collapsed in the area of city fire headquarters on Walnut Street where he was found dead later that morning.  He died of a stab wound to the chest.  Police are looking for Burns and the investigation continues.

TWO STORE FRONTS FILLED BEFORE THEY BECOME EMPTY

It didn’t take long to fill two vacancies at the Monroe Marketplace in Hummels Wharf.  It was recently announced that Staples and Bed Bath and Beyond plan on closing next month at the shopping center along Route 15 in Snyder county.  Yesterday, officials announced that Old Navy and Ross Dress for Less will open this Spring, Old Navy in March in the space vacated by Staples and Ross Dress for Less in the soon to be vacant Bed, Bath and Beyond location.

LEFTOVER BLOCK GRANT MONEY TO BE AWARDED

It looks like Lycoming County Commissioners will be awarding leftover Community Development Block Grant funding during the meeting tomorrow.  2014 leftover funding of just over $43,000 dollars is slated for Washington Township Hill Road Reconstruction project.  Some $130,000 left over from 2016 and 2017 could go to Jersey Shore which addresses stormwater issues, and a million dollars is slated for the Lairdsville Sanitary Sewer project.

MISSING WOMAN FOUND DECEASED

The Bradford County Coroner’s office has confirmed that a body found in Athens on Monday is that of a woman reported missing there over the weekend.  The body of 73 year old Isabel Johnson was found in a large field in Athens by police who were searching for her on Monday.  She had walked away from her apartment on Saturday and was last seen walking in the borough.  The woman had suffered from alzheimers and dementia.  An autopsy is scheduled for today to determine the cause of death.

WOMAN ARRESTED FOR ROBBERY

Following a robbery at knifepoint at a city business yesterday, a city woman was arrested at her home blocks away.  It’s believed that 22 year old Jahnasia Wiggs walked into Cupps Vacuum Center on Washington Boulevard around 3:10 yesterday afternoon, pulled a knife and demanded money, getting away with an undisclosed amount.  A city police officer spotted the woman on her porch a few blocks away and she was identified as the person who committed the robbery.  She is also suspected of grabbing a money bag at the Turkey Hill Market on Washington Boulevard on Monday morning.  She is jailed in lieu of $90.000 bail.

ATTORNEY ANNOUNCED CANDIDACY

A Williamsport attorney has announced that he will run for the open judicial spot on the Lycoming County Court of Common Pleas.  Judge Richard Gray plans on retiring at the end of the year, and Attorney Ryan Tira has announced his intentions to run for the seat.  Tira has practiced law for 16 years with McNerney, Page, Vanderlin and Hall in the city.  Tira points to his experience and community involvement as qualifications for the seat.

LANE SHUT DOWN FOR HOURS

A lane of Route 15 North in the Lewisburg area was shut down for hours yesterday following a truck crash there.   A tractor trailer went off of the roadway near Beagle Club Road going down over an embankment and spilling fuel onto the roadway around 8:20 yesterday morning.  Crews were called in for a hazardous materials clean up and a lane closed there for several hours.  The truck driver was not injured.

LOCAL MILLIONAIRE?

It looks like our area may have a Millionaire.  It has been announced that one of four winning tickets in the Pennsylvania Lottery’s New Year’s Millionaire Raffle Drawing was purchased over the weekend at Wegman’s Market in the city of Williamsport.  The ticket was sold on Saturday to an as yet unidentified person according to store officials.  As of Monday morning, no one had come forward yet claiming the ticket.   The other three tickets were sold in Susquehanna, Carbon and Crawford Counties.
