MONTGOMERY COUNCIL CAUTIONED

Talk during last night’s Montgomery Borough Council meeting centered on a proposed chemical storage facility that a California Company wants to put within the borough limits.  Coastal Chemicals of Los Angeles would like to put in a facility on Miller Avenue which would house ten tanks of chemicals. Emergency officials in Montgomery warned council of potential issues which could put the town in danger in case of a leak or explosion.  Council voted to have their solicitor send a letter to the state DEP which under regulation would hold a public hearing in which both remedial and mitigation plans could be requested.

MAN CHARGED WITH MORE THAN 100 COUNTS

A Muncy Valley man faces charges stemming from an investigation in which he was found to allegedly have been engaging in sexual relations with two girls under the age of 12 over a four year period.  69 year old John Irwin Sr. is believed to have engaged in the  sexual acts with the victims at multiple locations in Lycoming and Sullivan Counties between January of 2014 and September of 2017.  Irwin faces more than 100 counts, and was arraigned on Monday and released after posting $100,000 bail.

WOMAN FOUND BEHIND WHEEL OF STOLEN VEHICLE

A Muncy area woman faces charges after being found behind the wheel of a stolen truck on Tuesday morning.  Police believe 29 year old Tiffany Fox, also known as Tiffany Holencik was under the influence of meth when she took a truck from the grounds of Muncy Homes along Route 442 late on Monday night. She was found behind the wheel of that vehicle not far from the business on Tuesday morning around 7:30 and taken into custody. She was jailed in lieu of $25,000 bail.

COUNCIL MEETS TONIGHT

Williamsport City Council has a number of items on their agenda tonight as they meet at City Hall.  Amongst those items is a review of the $5.2 million dollar construction project on the East Third Street/Old City Gateway project. It’s hope improvements there can spur further  development in that part of the city.  Council will also review results of a citywide cleanup project, discuss applying for a grant of $250,00 for a children’s playground at Memorial Park, as well as other business.

POSSIBLE TAX INCREASE IN LOYALSOCK DISTRICT

There is a possibility that Loyalsock Township School District property owners could see an increase on their tax bills next year. The school board yesterday voted to approve a tentative budget of close to $23.7 million dollars which would contain a .25 mills tax increase, which would mean an extra $25 dollars on a tax bill of property worth $100,000 dollars.  Officials point to increases for the 2019-2020 school year in several categories.  The district has until June 30th to pass a final budget and say adjustments could still be made.

STATE SENATE TAKES UP LEGISLATION

As expected the State House of Representatives yesterday passed legislation which would give now-adult victims of child sexual abuse another chance to sue their perpetrators or institutions that may have covered it up. The legislation relaxes criminal and civil limitations and would amend the state constitution to create a two-year window for victims to file civil lawsuits.  The State Senate yesterday took up their own version of the legislation which was voted down there last year.

MAN FACES CHARGES AFTER FALSELY REPORTING BURGLARY

Charges of theft by deception and false reports have been filed against a man for falsely reporting a burglary in Northumberland County last month.; On March 20th, 60 year old David Reynolds called police and told them that money had been stolen from Buzz’s Pizza and Subs on East 8th Street in Watsontown.  Following an investigation it was found that Reynolds instead had used the money and wanted to cover up the missing cash and no burglary had occurred.

SPANIER TO BEGIN SERVING SENTENCE

It looks like the fight by the former Penn State University President to stay out of jail is over.  Graham Spanier who in 2017 was convicted of child endangerment for his handling about a complaint about former Penn State Assistant Football Coach Jerry Sandusky over sexual abuse of children has been ordered to begin serving his two month Prison sentence on May 1st.  He will serve that sentence in Central PA.  Sandusky meanwhile is awaiting re-sentencing.  He is currently serving a 30 to 60 year sentence in state prison

MEET THE CANDIDATES

Tomorrow morning, the two candidates in the special election for the 12th congressional district seat vacated by Tom Marino will be on hand in Lewisburg for a meet the candidates forum put on by Greater Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce.  The session will take place at the Country Cupboard Restaurant at 101 Hafer Road in Lewisburg from 7:30 to 9am.  Republican Fred Keller, and Democrat Marc Friedenberg will participate in a moderated discussion.  To register for the event go online at www.gsvcc.org.

LYCOMING COUNTY FOREST FIRE

A forest fire burned about 15 acres in Northern Lycoming County yesterday.  Firefighters from several companies as well as from the Bureau of Forestry were called out around 2pm to the fire along Route 414 in Brown Township and found the fire burning up some acreage there. It took about five hours to bring that fire under control and extinguish it by about 90%.  No buildings were impacted.  No one was injured and a cause was not reported.

AN EXTRA DAY FOR THE DEER SEASON

The Pennsylvania rifle deer season will begin earlier this year.  Yesterday, the PA game commission voted to begin the deer season on the Saturday following Thanksgiving instead of the following Monday which it has been that way for years.  One of the motivating factors, according to game officials is that hunters who have to work or have to attend school or college will be able to go out on the first day.  The decision will allow hunters to use three Saturday’s in order to go deer hunting.  There is no Sunday hunting.  The decision is getting a mixed reaction from hunters.

ROUTE 44 PROJECT HAS BEGUN

An embankment repair project has started back up on Route 44 about a mile south of Waterville in Cummings Township, Lycoming County.  A contractor is performing drainage work and paving during the daylight hours and flagpersons will be controlling the flow of traffic there.  Penn DOT reports that the $1.5 million dollar project should be completed by late May and motorists should be alert and dive with caution through the work zone.

SNYDER COUNTY MAN HELD FOR RAPE

A Mt. Pleasant Mills man is jailed in lieu of $100,00 bail, after being charged with the rape of a 17 year old girl in Snyder County.  49 year old Duane Inch faces charges of rape, aggravated indecent assault and several other counts stemming from the incidents which took place at an undisclosed place between January and March of this year.  The girl reported Inch on March 29th.  He is in Snyder County jail and faces a preliminary hearing.

WOMAN FOUND BEATEN IN SELINSGROVE

A New Jersey woman was found severely beaten in Selinsgrove on Monday morning and police there are investigating.  The woman reportedly arrived in Selinsgrove around 1:30 on Sunday afternoon and after getting a flat tire, walked across the Susquehanna University campus.  She was found around 7:15 on Monday morning with severe injuries to her face and torso and was taken to Geisinger Medical Center.  It’s believed she may have suffered the injuries in the area of Industrial Park Road and police are asking anyone with information to give them a call.

PRELIMINARY HEARING HELD

An area police officer, accused of sexual assault had his preliminary hearing in Lycoming County yesterday in front of District Judge Christian Frey.  The victim in the case testified yesterday in the hearing for 69 year old Larry Wilcox, who it’s alleged took the woman home from a bar in Montgomery while on duty as a Montgomery cop last July and then allegedly sexually assaulted her.  Frey who was stepping in for district judge Jon Kemp who recused himself dropped one charge of aggravated indecent assault and has reserved his decision on three other criminal counts.

FUEL SPILL CLEAN UP POSTPONED

That fuel spill clean up which was to get underway and last through tomorrow on Route 15 Northbound at River road in East Buffalo Township has been postponed. The work will now take place next week on Tuesday and Wednesday between the hours of 7am and 7pkm.  Traffic will be reduced to a single lane during work hours and there will be full intermittent traffic stoppages.

NO BAIL FOR SUSPECTED DRUG DEALER

During a preliminary hearing on Monday for a suspected city drug, dealer, District Judge Gary Whiteman decided to hold the man on all charges, and also to  hold the man without bail, even after his defense attorney asked that the $100,000 bail be lowered.  26 year old Savoy Jennings is accused of selling heroin to an undercover officer or confidential informant on two separate occasions this year.  After reading notes written by another district judge who was on duty during Jennings arraignment, Whiteman made his decision to hold the man with no bail.

PLAYGROUND PLANS REVIEWED

Officials in the city of Williamsport are trying to move forward with the construction of an accessible playground at Memorial Park in the City of Williamsport.  The City Council finance and public works committees reviewed plans for the estimated $360,000 dollar playground and was asked to consider submission of a $250,000 state grant to help pay for it. Recreation officials believe the grant along with possible Community Development Block Grant funding and a private donation could pay for the playground.  The committees stopped short of recommending the project to the full council.

“CI” HONORED

A local educator and coach was honored for his achievements on the floor of the State Senate in Harrisburg yesterday.  Ron “CI” Insinger who has taught and coached at Loyalsock High School since 1974 was honored yesterday.  Insinger became the first coach in Pennsylvania history to amass 1,000 career high school victories in a win over Hughesville earlier this year.  Insinger is a member of the Lycomign County Sports Hall of Fame, the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame and the Pennsylvania Basketball Hall of Fame.

NEW PLACE CHOSEN FOR BASKETBALL COURTS

It looks like a city man who plays for the NBA now has a new location to place his basketball courts.  Alize Johnson who is with the NBA Indiana Pacers and who has created his own charitable organization, had expressed interest in a building NBA style basketball courts at Memorial Park in the City but decided against that.  A report in this morning’s Williamsport Sun Gazette now says he has decided to spend up to $150,000 dollars of his own money to build the courts outside of Firetree Place along Memorial Avenue in the city.

WILLIAMSPORT MAN CHARGED WITH HOMICIDE BY VEHICLE

A 30 year old Williamsport man was arrested yesterday and charged with a traffic death in Union County which occurred in 2018.  30 year old Aaron Morrison was behind the wheel of a vehicle in January of last year on Route 15 in White Deer Township which slammed into the rear of another vehicle driven by Stephen Kent of Coal Township.  The car burst into flames, killing Kent’s wife, Diane and seriously injuring Kent.  Morrison faces charges of homicide by vehicle, aggravated assault and several other counts.  He was jailed in lieu of $15,000 bail.

SLOW GOING ON ROUTE 15 TOMORROW AND THURSDAY

Traffic on Route 15 northbound in Union County will see a slowdown tomorrow and Thursday weather permitting.  A diesel fuel spill clean up will take place on 15 northbound at River Road in East Buffalo Township. The work will be performed from 7am to 7pm both days with the roadway reduced to a single lane and intermittent traffic stoppages.  Delays are expected and motorists should be alert and wach for stopped or slow-moving vehicles.

WOMAN PLEADS GUILTY IN TRAFFIC DEATH

A guilty plea in Union County Court yesterday for a Bloomsburg woman who was behind the wheel of a vehicle which slammed into a tree in Union County in October of last year, killing her passenger.  Police say 38 year old Sabrina Gearhart was under the influence of alcohol and also had marijuana and cocaine in her system when her vehicle went off of W.H. Troup Road in Buffalo Township, slamming into the tree and killing Blake Baver of Sunbury.  Gearhart entered a guilty plea to homicide by vehicle and DUI with other charges dropped. She faces up to 27 months in prison.

MUNCY MAN ARRESTED IN HUGHESVILLE

Hughesville police have arrested a man they say resisted arrested and tried to run from them following an incident over the weekend.  Police were called out when 27 year old Matt Bixler of Muncy got into a conflict with someone on Saturday, and kicked out the window of a vehicle. When they tried to take him into custody, he ran from them.  He was taken into custody, charges with resisting arrest, flight to avoid apprehension, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct. He was jailed in lieu of $10,000 bail.

WOMAN CHARGED IN MILTON

Police in Milton have now charged the mother of two teen girls who were used to see drugs there.  Paggie Neiman faces charges of child endangerment, corruption of minors, possession with intent to deliver and related counts.  It’s believed she allowed her daughters, 13 and 15 to help her boyfriend, Craig Lytle sell marijuana in the Milton area.  Lytle was arrested over the weekend.  Neimann will be in Northumberland County Court this week to answer to the charges.

SNYDER COUNTY FIRE

Two are homeless following a Sunday night fire in Snyder County. The fire struck in a trailer home along White Block Studio Road in Penn Township.. It’s believed the fire started in a furnace and spread underneath the trailer.  It was contained to the rear of the trailer, but not before it caused $30,000 dollars in damage.  Firefighters from several companies were called to the scene.  No one was injured and firefighters were on the scene for approximately two hours.

WOMAN TRIED RUNNING OVER EX-FIANCE’

An incident in Berwick over the weekend resulted in a woman there being jailed in Columbia County Prison.  Police there say 40 year old Sharon Blaylock tried to run her vehicle into her on-again, off-again boyfriend and ex-fiance’ outside Bob’s Sub Shop in Hazleton around 6:45 on Sunday evening.  She missed him but crashed into the sub shot itself.  She is charges with attempted homicide, aggravated assault and related counts.

MAN ACCUSED OF ASSAULT IN CLINTON COUNTY

A Lock Haven area man was jailed this week following an incident in which he allegedly assaulted his wife at their Woodward Township home in Clinton County. The incident happened as 47 year old Rodney Swope of Mackey Avenue got into an altercation with the woman at a residence on Queen’s Run Road.  Swope allegedly threatened to kill the woman and then struck her in the head and face, knocking out teeth. He has been charged with simple assult and terroristic threats and is incarcerated in the Clinton County Correctional facility.

MILTON MAN FACES DRUG CHARGES

Charges of manufacture with intent to deliver, child endangerment and corruption of minors have been filed against a Milton man who police say used two female students in the Milton Area School District to deal drugs.  Craig Lytle was charged after a search warrant at his home turned up a large amount of marijuana as well as $2,000 in cash.  Police say he had the girls deal the drugs for him,  He is jailed in Northumberland County. No word on whether or not the girls have been charged.

TWO ARRESTED BY U.S. MARSHALS

An arrest made on Friday of the two men wanted in our area for striking a man with a vehicle and then shooting at him.  U.S. Marshals arrested Norman Dennis and Robert Vettese at Dennis Drexel Hill Home on Friday morning. The two are accused of striking Chaz Turner with a vehicle along Robbins Road in Loyalsock Township on March 31st with Vettese then taking a shot and missing Turner.  It appeared they were going to strike him again, but took off after noticing witnesses.  They face attempted homicide charges and other counts here in Lycoming County. Turner suffered minor injuries.

CSVT WORK RAMPS BACK UP

Work has ramped back up on the Northern Section of the Central Susquehanna Valley Thruway project in Northumberland, Union and Snyder Counties. Work will continue on the River Bridge and traffic on Route 147 there are reminded that construction equipment will be entering and exiting the roadway there throughout the construction season.  There will also be intermittent single lane traffic impacts at the Winfield Interchange at Route 15 as the contractor resumes work on pipe, structures and earthwork.  Later this spring, paving is expected to begin on the northbound section.

RESTORE PENNSYLVANIA TOUR HITS LOYALSOCK CREEK

The Loyalsock Creek was the site on Friday of a tour by officials with Governor Wolf’s administration as well as local officials.  An official with the Department of Environmental Protection led a tour along the creek to discuss how Wolf’s Restore Pennsylvania plan would help with flood control along the creek.  Wolf wants to sink $4.5 billion dollars into the state’s infrastructure for various projects including flood mitigation.  He wants to impose a severance tax on the gas industry to fund the program.

BLOOMSBURG MAN INJURED IN I-180 CRASH

A crash on Interstate 180 in Fairfield Township early yesterday morning sent a Bloomsburg man to the hospital with unspecified injuries. The crash occurred around 12:20pm in the westbound lanes near the Fairfield Road Exit when 48 year old Terrance Alden of Bloomsburg lost control of his vehicle which struck the guardrail, went off the road and rolled over. He was taken to UPMC Susquehanna Williamsport Regional Medical Center. His condition was not released.

GUILTY OF MURDER IN THE 1ST AND 2ND DEGREES

A man accused with two others of the murder of a mother and her son was found guilty in Lycoming County Court on Friday.  27 year old Jordan Rawls is accused of pulling the trigger and shooting both Shane Wright and his mother, Kristine Kibler at their Newberry home on Halloween of 2016.  He was found guilty after a week long trial of first and second degree murder as well as several other counts. He faces life in prison without parole for the first degree murder.

I-180 WORK RESUMES

Work on the I-180 resurfacing project from Cemetery Road in Fairfield Township to the Muncy Creek Bridge in Muncy Creek Township is set to start back up this week.  Today shoulder closures at the I-180 Westbound off and on ramps at Route 405 will begin and will occur daily between 7am and 5pm as a subcontractor can construct a new highway lighting system at the interchange.  There will also be shoulder closures during the same hours along I-180 Westbound from E. Lime Bluff Road overpass to Halls Station for stump grinding operations.  Motorists should be alert and drive with caution through the work zone.

FOUR TAKEN TO HOSPTIAL FOLLOWING CRASH

Four persons were taken to UPMC Susquehanna Williamsport Regional Medical Center for treatment following a crash in Loyalsock Township on Saturday evening. The crash occurred around 8:20 pm as 19 year old Maleana Hampton of Hughesville pulled onto East Third Street from the I-180 ramp into the path of a vehicle driven by 31 year old Matt Emerick of Montoursville.  Hampton and two teen passengers were treated at the hospital, as was a three year old in Emerick’s car.  No word on their conditions.

ROUTE 45 BRIDGE PROJECT

A Bridge rehabilitation project gets underway this week on Route 45 in Northumberland County. The bridge spans Chillisquaque Creek approximately 2.2 miles east of the Route 147 Interchange and work will include removal and replacement of the existing concret deck, substructure repairs and approach work.  The bridge will be closed to all through traffic and a detour will be in place using Route 147 and Route 642..  The project is expected to be completed in October.

CLOSING ARGUMENTS TODAY

Closing arguments are scheduled in the murder trial of Jordan Rawls, who along with two other men is accused of the robbery and killings of Shane Wright and his mother Kristine Kibler at their Poplar Street home on Halloween Night of 2016.  Testimony yesterday included Kibler’s daughter who testified as to the events of that night, as well as Rawls co-defendant Casey Wilson who told the jury that Rawls was the last man to run out of the house, after gunshots were heard.  Wilson has already pleaded to 3rd degree murder.  Co-defendant Joseph Coleman was found guilty of 2nd degree murder. The prosecution is seeking a 1st degree murder conviction against Rawls.

ESCAPE ATTEMPT IN TIOGA COUNTY

Word from Tioga County that two prison inmates at the County Prison in Wellsboro attacked a corrections officer last month, trying to get her keys in an alleged escaped attempt.  21 year old Safari Kahl and 21 year old Ashley Abplanalp are accused of drawing the female officer into their cell, and then throwing hot water on her back, getting her on the floor and trying to take the woman’s keys on March 10th.  She was able to get away and call for help.  The two face several charges and are scheduled to be re-arraigned on April 15th.  The investigation continues.

MOTORCYCLE CRASH INJURES TWO

Two were injured in a motorcycle crash in Clinton Township yesterday afternoon.  That crash occurred as a motorcycle went down at Routes 15 and 54 in the township around 12:49pm. The two were taken to the hospital for treatment of their injuries, though their names and conditions were not released.  Crews were on the scene for over an hour.  The motorcycle crash remains under investigation.

MAN CHARGED WITH ASSAULTING EX-GIRLFRIEND

A Williamsport man was arrested by city police on Monday following a break-in and assault of his ex-girlfriend.  30 year old Robert Foley is accused of breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s house early on Monday morning, while she was asleep, assaulting her and threatening to kill her and then fleeing with her cellphone.  He is charged with burglary, strangulation and a host of other counts and was jailed in lieu of $50,000 bail.  The woman reportedly had filed a PFA against the man.

MAN ARRESTED BY NARCOTICS ENFORCEMENT UNIT

A Philadelphia man is jailed in lieu of $350,000 dollars bail for drug dealing in the city of Williamsport and Loyalsock.  The Lycoming County Narcotics Enforcement Unit has arrested 29 year old Zachary Tate for four alleged sales of crack cocaine between February 12th and March 19th of this year.  He is charged with possession with intent to deliver and related offenses.

CRASH VICTIM IDENTIFIED

State police in Montoursville have released the name of a woman flown to Geisinger Medical Center following a crash in Franklin Township on Monday.  The crash occurred shortly before 9:15 on Monday night on Route 118 as 26 year old Elissa Barnes of Unityville lost control of her vehicle which went off the roadway and struck two trees.  She was flown onto Geisinger with serious injuries.  Her condition has not been reported and no one else was involved in that crash.

GROVES FILES APPEAL

Citing seven reasons why he should get a new triasl, the attorney for Loyd Groves has appealed a Clinton County Jury’s December conviction of the man for the third degree murder of Kathy Heckel.  Heckel disappeared in Lock Haven more than 27 years ago and the 69 year old  Groves, who was always a suspect was arrested in January of 2015 following the gathering of evidence in the cold case.  He is serving a state prison sentence of 10 to 20 years.

CHILD ABUSE LEGISLATION VOTE NEXT WEEK

Two pieces of legislation which could make it easier or victims of childhood sexual abuse to file lawsuits are expected to be voted on in the State House of Representatives  next week.  One bill would eliminate the statue of limitation and give victims of abuse until the age of 55 to file lawsuits.  The other would begin the process of amending the state Constitution to allow a two-year retroactive window for lawsuits over past abuse.  The bills are expected to undergo a committee vote on Monday and a full house vote on Wednesday.

PAVING TO BEGIN

Detours, delays and plenty of road work is expected in the city of Williamsport this spring and summer.  A story in this morning’s Williamsport Sun Gazette says city officials have targeted about 36 streets for milling and paving now that asphalt plants are opening up.  Crews will start in Newberry to the west and work their way east in the city.  Motorists can expect detours, as well as flaggers over much of the city during the construction season.

INTERROGATION VIDEO SHOWN

Day three of a Lycoming County murder trial centered around a police interrogation of the suspect Jordan Rawls who is standing trial in the shooting deaths of Kristine Kibler and her son Shane Wright at their Poplar Street home in October of 2016.  The video which was played for the jury showed police asking Rawls about his whereabouts before, during and after the shootings, and showing him video and images of him being with the two men who have already been implicated in the murders.  The prosecution will continue their case today in Lycoming County Court.

MONTANDON AREA HOME HEAVILY DAMAGED

A home near Montandon was damaged by fire, fanned by the wind yesterday.  Firefighters from several companies Northumberland and Union Counties were called out just before 5:30 to the home along Ridgeview Colony Road to find flames inside the two story house.  It took about 35 minutes to bring that fire under control, but not before it damaged the back and second floor of the house.  No one was injured, and the homeowner was not named.    It’s believed the fire originated from a debris fire which got out of hand in the windy conditions there yesterday.

FAMILY DISPLACED

A family of five was displaced following a Loyalsock Township fire yesterday. Firefighters were called out around 8:15pm to a fire in the attic at a double home at 802-804 Faxon Parkway in the township.  When they arrived, they found flames and smoke coming from the attic on the 804 side and were able to make quick work of the fire with minimal damage.  No one was hurt and the family is expected to be back in the home by the weekend.  The  cause of that fire was not released.

DISCARDED CIGARETTE CAUSES FIRE

Fire broke out on the back porch of a High Street home in the city of Williamsport yesterday.  The fire which started in the grass at rear of the 1207 High Street home quickly spread to the porch bringing in firefighters form the city. They were able to quicly extinguish that fire before it spread to the house after two contractors working next door quickly ran over before they arrived and poured two five gallon buckets of water on as they attempted to keep it from spreading.  It’s believed that the careless discarding of smoking materials started that city fire.

MAN JAILED

A Williamsport man was jailed on Tuesday night following two separate incidents.  The first early Tuesday morning, when Timothy Jacobs crashed a vehicle on the 6000 block of Route 15 in Clinton Townshipo early on Tuesday morning after assaulting his girlfriend.   He then fled.  He was later seen in a vehicle in Eldred Township by police around 3pm but took off from them.  He faces charges from the two separate incidents including DUI, assault, terroristic threats, fleeing and eluding, and other counts and is jailed in lieu of $100,000 bail.

FINANCING APPROVED

During their meeting last night the Williamsport Area School Board approved a resolution which will help the district move ahead with securing financing not to exceed 9 million, 995,000 dollars which will allow the district to fund capital projects.  Amongst those projects is the Millionaire Drive project, which will include paving, sidewalks and lighting for the road up to the high school.  The project will be funded in part by a multi-modal grant of close to $1.2 million dollars with the district paying for the rest.

YAW TO INTRODUCE LEGISLATION TO HELP MILK HAULERS

Legislation will soon be introduced in the State Senate which would exempt milk haulers from travel bans issued due to declaration of disaster emergencies which includes weather related travel bans.  23rd District State Senator Gene Yaw will team up with State Senator Judy Ward to introduce the legislation after hearing from dairy producers and processors who have had to dispose of milk due to the weather related travel bans, not allowing the milk to get to market.

REDISTRICTING SESSION

Residents interested in legislative redistricting in the state of Pennsylvania will get a chance to let their views be known during a pair of sessions today in Williamsport.  The newly created PA Redistricting Reform Commission will meet today from 4 to 7pm at the FCFP building at 201 West Fourth Street in Williamsport.  Two public comment sessions will be held. The first from 4:10 to 5:30 and the second from 5:40 to 6:50.  You are encouraged the full meeting, but to comment, can register on site prior to the session.

MEET THE CANDIDATES FOR CONGRESS

MURDER TRIAL UNDERWAY

The trial has begun for a 27 year old man accused of shooting a mother and son at their Newberry home on Halloween night of 2016.  Jordan Rawls is believed to have pulled the trigger the night Shane Wright and his mother Kristine Kibler were killed.  Rawls, Joseph Coleman and Casey Wilson went to the Poplar Street home to commit a robbery when the shootings happened.  Coleman has already been found guilty of second degree murder and Wilson has pleaded guilty to 3rd degree murder and is scheduled to testify against Rawls.

WEST FOURTH STREET RECONSTRUCTION BEGINS

A road closing in the West End of Williamsport will impact traffic there for several months.  Contractors will shut down West Fourth Street between Arch Street and the Route 15 ramps in Newberry this morning as they begin work on the multi-year West Fourth Street Reconstruction.  Detours will be in place for both east and westbound traffic using various city streets.  Motorists are reminded that there will be delays and are reminded to leave early for their destination.  That section of roadway will be closed until late September of this year.

$160 MILLION OF ROAD PROJECTS

It’s road construction time.  The Wolf Administration yesterday announced that 127 highway and bridge projects are anticpated to begin or continue across the nine county north central Pennsylvania region.  The state is expected to invest more than $160 million dollars in thos projects across our area.  Major projects include the continuing Central Susquehanna Valley Thruway, the Duke Street Reconstruction Project in Northumberland County.Interstate 180 resurfacing from Fairfield to Muncy Creek Township and the West Fourth Street reconstruction project in Newberry which begins today.

DRIVER FLOWN TO GEISINGER

A crash near Lairdsville last night, sent one person to Geisinger Medical Center with what were termed critical injuries.  The crash occurred around 9:10 on Route 118 at Bald Eagle Road as a car went off the roadway, down over an embankment and struck a tree.  The driver who has not been identified had to be extricated and was flown to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.  Their condition has not been released and the crash remains under investigation.

FIRE MARSHAL TO LOOK INTO CAUSE

A double home in South Williamsport, struck by fire on Sunday has been termed a total loss. A State police fire marshal is expected to be on the scene today to look into the cause of a fire which began on the front porch of a double home at 221-223 West 2nd Avenue owned by John and Christine McDermott quickly spreading through both sides of the home and jumping to the home next door causing damage to the attic and siding.  Firefighters were hampered by windy conditions and downed powerlines and were not able to bring that fire under control for about 2 ½ hours. No one was hurt.

$15,000 IN DAMAGE

Damage was estimated at $15,000 dollars in that Williamsport fire in which one of two upstairs occupants had to be rescued on Sunday.  Fire investigators say that 39 year old Nicole Spelis was cooking on the stove at her 45 Huffman Street apartment when she stepped out of the room.  The other tenant, Akim Smart was able to make it out of the house.  Spelis was rescued by off-duty fire chief Todd Heckman who lives nearby.  She was treated for smoke inhalation and other injuries. Her condition not released.  Fire officials stress safety when cooking on the stove.

SEARCH CONTINUES FOR TWO INVOLVED IN HIT AND RUN

‘State police say they continue looking for the two men involved in a hit and run and shooting incident in Loyalsock Township on Sunday.  An as yet unidentified man was struck by a car while walking along Robbins Road near Warrensville Road on Sunday afternoon.  The vehicle, containing two men then tried striking the man again, and the passenger shot at him, missing.  They then took off.  The man was not seriously injured.  The car was found at Wal-Mart in Montoursville.  Police are not releasing any other details.

CONDITIONS RIPE FOR BRUSH FIRES

Dry breezy conditions yesterday once again contributed to at least four brush fires within Lycoming County.  The fires occurred between 1:15 and 3:15 in four separate areas in the county.  Most of the fires were put out in short fashion without burning up too much acreage.  You are reminded to keep an eye on your outdoor burning and refrain from doing so if possible, especially if winds are kicking up. The next couple of days will be dry and breezy.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT FIRE

At least three are homeless following a South Williamsport fire yesterday.  Firefighters were called out to the double home at 221-223 West Second Avenue around 6:15pm yesterday when fire reportedly broke out on the front porch and quickly spread. A second alarm was called in and several companies were dispatched to the scene.  The home owned by John and Chris McDermott was destroyed.  Vehicles parked there were damaged and a neighboring home also suffered damage. NO one was injured, an estimated of damage not released and the cause is under investigation.

MAN STRUCK BY VEHICLE THEN SHOT AT

State police in Montoursville say they are still looking for two men who were inside a vehicle which struck another man in Loyalsock Township yesterday.  The incident happened around 2:40pm on Robbins Road just off of Warrensville Road. The man was struck and then shot at with the shot missing him, the vehicle then backed up to strike him again, but took off.  The victim who was not identified was not seriously injured. The car was later found in the Wal-Mart Parking lot in Montoursville with the store searched.  Police say they continue their investigation and are asking anyone with information to give them a call.

ACTIVE SHOOTER DRILL

A large contingent of emergency responders, police and others descended on the UPMC Susquehanna Williamsport Medical Center yesterday morning to participate in an active shooter drill.  The drill involved more than 500 people from more than 30 agencies across the area.  Area college students played patients and victims and two persons portrayed themselves as active shooters with two helicopters involved, as well as fire crews, EMS and employees from other area hospitals.

MOTORCYCLE CRASH INJURES MAN

A man was treated at UPMC Susquehanna Williamsport Regional Medical Center after crashing his motorcycle in the city of Williamsport on Saturday night.  The accident happened around 11pm, as 67 year old Randolph Hill crashed his cycle into a pole in the 1100 block of Washington Boulevard. His condition was not released. The crash remains under investigation by Williamsport police.

CITY CRASH INJURES WOMAN

A female passenger was taken to the hospital for treatment following a crash in the city of Williamsport on Saturday evening.  Police say 31 year old Clifford Deljonavon of Williamsport lost control of his vehicle on Memorial Avenue around 9:30pm,  The vehicle went off the roadway and onto the property of the Memorial Homes complex, striking a a bank of ground based heating and air conditioning units.  A passenger, 53 year old Collette Weaver of Lock Haven was taken to the hospital and treated. Her condition was not released.  The apartment complex itself was not damaged.

WOMAN RESCUED FROM BURNING APARTMENT

Fire struck in the city of Williamsport yesterday afternoon leaving three homeless and sending a woman to the hospital for smoke inhalation and other injures.  The fire broke out around 5:30pm in the kitchen of a 2nd floor apartment at 45 Huffman Street.  Williamsport’s Fire chief Todd Heckman who was off-duty at the time, with the help of some neighbors and city police officers was able to pull the woman out of the burning structure.  Her condition was not released.  Fire damage was extensive and the woman and her boyfriend as well as a downstairs tenant are homeless. The cause is under investigation.

DUKE STREET PROJECT CLOSES ANOTHER ROAD

It’s back to work for crews on the Duke Street Reconstruction project in Northumberland today.  Beginning today, Queen Street will be closed between 2nd Street and Water Street.as the contractor continues reconstruction on the northbound lane of Route 11 from the railroad underpass toward King Street.  Access will be maintained to homes and businesses on Queen Street during the work which is expected to last to the end of July.  A detour will be in effect.

STABBING INCIDENT, TWO JAILED

Two persons were jailed following an incident along Lycoming Creek Road on Saturday afternoon.  Police were called to an apartment house at 2303 Lycoming Creek Road on Saturday afternoon for reports of a man with a knife. There they found that 37 year old Charles Johnson had slashed the arm of Mark Walker Jr. who was there to help a woman retrieve some property from the apartment.  Johnson was charged with assault and other counts and jailed in lieu of $50,000 bail.  Another woman, was jailed after it was found she was wanted on an arrest warrant in Cameron County.

MILTON MAN ARRESTED FOR FIRING GUN

A Milton man faces multiple charges following an incident there early yesterday morning.  Police say around 2am, Rafael Mora-Kuilan fired a gun into a group of people twice in the area of Broadway and Long Alley in Milton.  No one was hit.  It was found that the gun was stolen.  Mora-Kuilan faces charges of felony riot as well as firearms charges.  He is jailed in Northumberland County.

WATSONTOWN MAN ACCUSED OF ASSAULT

A Watsontown man was arrested on Saturday after allegedly assaulting a woman as well as a 14 year old girl.  The incident happened at a Watsontown home as 37 year old Joshua Dunn allegedly attmpted to strangle the girl and threatened her. He then allegedly struck another woman in the head.   He has been charged with 2 counts of simple assault, 2 counts of harassment, criminal attempt to commit strangulation and disorderly conduct and is free on $50,000 bail.

COUNCIL FILED LITIGATION

Williamsport City Council has filed litigation against Mayor Gabriel Campana.  The litigation filed in Lycoming County Court is to force the mayor to appoint or reappoint four vacant seats on the Williamsport Municipal Water Authority.  Council members say the mayor is not acting within the bylaws and that some of the appointments have not been made within the past three years.  In addition last night they voted unanimously to create a committee to examine and review each potential authority member.  Mayor Campana is serving his last year in office and is seeking the Republican nomination to run for one of three Lycoming County Commissioner seats in the fall.

POTENTIAL SCHOOL CLOSINGS THE TOPIC OF MEETING

The Jersey Shore School Board met last night to revisit a proposal to shut down one or two elementary schools within the district.  A hearing was held last night with most of those present against the move which would result in students from the Avis and/or Salladsburg Elementary Schools to be moved to the elementary school in Jersey Shore.  District officials point ot over $700,000 dollars in savings by closing the schools.  Due to state regulations, any vote would not be taken for about three months and closures if they happened would not occur until the 2020-2021 school year.

TEEN ACCUSED OF RAPE

An 18 year old Jersey Shore teen faces counts of rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, aggravated indecent assault and related offenses for alleged rape of a teen girl at a cabin in Anthony Township.  Zachary Kiess reportedly committed the rape at a party at the cabin along Stony Gap Road in the early morning hours of March 24th.  The girl was treated at Evangelical Community Hospital in Lewisburg.  Kiess was originally jailed in lieu of $50,000 dollars bail but has since been released.

WINFIELD HOME DAMAGED BY FIRE

A Winfield home in Union County was heavily damaged by fire on Wednesday night.  The multiple alarm fire was reported around 7:45pm in the home at Route 304 and Park Road bringing in volunteer firefighters from 9 departments in three counties.  Firefighters found flames and heavy smoke coming from the house when they arrived.  No one was reported injured, and a damage estimate has not been released.  The homeowner was not named and the cause of that fire is under investigation.  Four persons were reportedly left homeless.

SHAMOKIN MAN SENTENCED FOR PART IN DRUG RING

A Shamokin man has been sentenced to four years in federal prison for his part in a drug ring which sold heroin and other drugs in the Sunbury and Berwick Areas.  Adam Poeth who has had three pervious drug convictions was arrested along Frank Galasso of Sunbury 18 months ago on Interstate 80 on their way to buy heroin in Philadelphia to return back to the area for sale.   A third man, Chad Snyder formerly of Northumberland was sentenced in February to 17 months in federal prison.

GRANT FOR BANDSHELL RESTORATION

Another $150,000 dollars will go towards the rehabilitation of the Brandon Park Bandshell in the city of Williamsport.  The grant comes from the Williamsport Lycoming Community Fund and the Dr. Randall F. Hipple Fund at the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania.  The money will be used to add a roof, repoint brick and build accessible accomodations in its restrooms.  The bandshell was originally dedicated in 1914 and hosts numerous local events.

MAN SENTENCED FOR COIN SHOP ROBBERY

A Snyder County man has been sentenced to state prison for his part in a Shamokin Dam robbery and assault.  Michael Rodenheizer from Beaver Springs will serve a year and a half in prison after pleading guilty to his part in the robbery of $70,000 dollars worth of coins and jewelry from Sterner’s Coin Shop in 2017.  The owner of the coin shop was also assaulted in the robbery.  The other man, who is accused of pistol whipping the man, David Bobe of Berwick was sentenced earlier this month to 10 to 20 years.

DRILL ON SUNDAY

Sunday morning will be a busy one in the area of the UPMC Susquehanna Williamsport Regional Medical Center.  A large number of emergency vehicles will be in the area between the hours of 9am and 1pm, but it will only be a drill.  A coordinated training exercise will include regional first response organizations including fire, emergency medical services and police as they test multi-agency emergency response and operations.  There will be a large number of role playing actors as well as props and sound effects during the training.  Residents are reminded to not be alarmed as it is only a training session.

GRANT APPLICATION SUBMISSION EXTENDED

A grant program which benefits Lycoming County non-profit organizations that promote youth activity and healthy living through sports has seen the application submission date extended. The Little League Fund for Youth Sports is distributed through the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania and gives preference to request that help remove barriers inhibiting participation or enhance experiences for all participants.  Grants are available from $250 up to a thousand dollars.  The application deadline is now May 1st.

COUNCIL CALLING ON MAYOR TO FILL POSITIONS

During their meeting tonight, Williamsport City Council is expected to announce an option to compel Mayor Gabriel Campana to make recommendations to put people on the board for the Williamsport Water and Sanitary Authority, which would include creating a committee to evaluate prospective appointees or reappointees.  Council members have expressed their dissatisfaction with what they say is the mayor not following protocol in filling seats that have expired in a timely manner.  Five members terms have recently expired.  Mayor Campana has denounced council’s concerns.

RECERTIFICATION EFFORTS GET SOME FINANCIAL HELP

As the levee recertification moves forward in the Williamsport Area, the Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce has announced that they are contributing to the effort.  It was announced yesterday that the Chamber will $500,000 dollars towards the project which will cost millions of dollars.  Meanwhile, the Williamsport Water and Sanitary Authority continues to review a request for a million dollars.    The Authority tabled any action on that request yesterday.  Federal, State and local officials continue working on grants and other financing options to fund the mandated repair and recertification process.

CONDITIONS RIPE FOR BRUSH FIRES

It’s that time of year where things are drying up, and with windy conditions, things are ripe for brush fires.  Area fire companies were called out to a couple of those within Lycoming County yesterday.  One occurred in Mifflin Township off of Route 973 which burned about a half an acre, the other in Penn Township along Beaver Lake Road of which it was originally believed a barn was involved.  You are reminded that until we get some rain which is expected to happen later today, to keep and eye on your outdoor burning, so it doesn’t get out of hand.

LINDEN MAN CHARGED

A Linden man with a previous drug conviction was jailed on Monday after firearms were found in his home.  State police charged 45 year old Douglas Fredericks with being a convicted felon not to possess a firearm after a shotgun and two handguns were found at his Linden home.  He was arraigned and jailed in Lycoming County Prison in lieu of $100,000 dollars bail.

CITY MAN JAILED ON DRUG CHARGES

A Williamsport man was jailed on Friday following an unspecified incident in the 200 block of William Street in the city.  29 year old Michael Musilli was found with cocaine and was charged with attempted delivery of cocaine and illegal use of a cellphone after being arrested there.  He was arraigned and jailed in Lycoming County Prison in lieu of $50,000 bail.

FAMILY CALLS FOR IN-DEPTH INVESTIGATION

The family of a man shot by police in State College last week, is calling for an in-depth investigation into his shooting.  29 year old Osazie Osagie, was shot by police after he produced a knife while police were at his State College apartment to serve a mental health warrant on March 20th.  His parents have enlisted the help of the ACLU calling on Centre County officials to do a rigorous, independent and transparent investigation which includes an assessment of the role that mental health and race may have played in the shooting.  The identity of the officer who show Osagie has not been released.

WOMAN CHARGED WITH MAKING FALSE REPORTS

A Northumberland County woman is free on bail, charged with two counts of perjury and a count of unsworn falsification to law enforcement after allegedly making false accusations against a police chief there.  Back in January, 21 year old Shaylee Heller of Treverton accused Zerbe Township police chief Mike Kreischer of physical and sexual assault.  It was determined by state police that the woman’s statement were false at the time, but at the end of the month, Heller sought a PSA against Kreischer which was first approved, but rescinded when she made similar false accusations against a state trooper. She is free on $5,000 bail.

ONLINE SCAM

Once again this year, there is an online scam involving Knoebels Amusement Resort in Elysburg.  Officials with Knoebels are telling residents who get an online offer for free tickets to the Amusement Resort in exchange for filling out a survey to ignore it. They say they are not running any such promotion.  Officials say a legitimate Knoebels promotion will also provide contest rules an the communications will originate from knoebels.com, an official Knoebels email address or one of the parks’ verified social media outlets.  The park opens for the season on April 27th.
