HEAT ADVISORY THIS WEEK

The heat arrives today for an extended period of possibly record high temperatures and humidity with an official advisory in place through Thursday from the National Weather Service.  Residents are advised to check on neighbors and family members who may be elderly or experience health complications to make sure they are in cool or air conditioned environments.  Public places such as libraries are easy alternatives to spend time in an air conditioned place.  Specifically, Mitch Alday the assistant director of the  Snyder County Libraries say all of their branches have air conditioning in case anyone is searching for relief from the heat.  Residents who must be outdoors are reminded by the Red Cross to remain hydrated and take frequent breaks.  The public is also reminded to never leave pets or small children in a hot vehicle even for a few moments.

DISCARDED GUN FOUND IN SUSQUEHANNA

State police at Milton found a firearm in the Susquehanna River in Union County and are seeking information about it.  According to Troopers, the gun was found under the Route 44 bridge in Gregg Township, on the eastern side of the river near Dewart.  If anyone has information about the gun found on June 14^th, should call State police 570 524-2662.

ACCIDENT ON I-80 WEST MONDAY

The westbound lanes of I-80 were closed for a few hours yesterday in Turbot Township after a tractor-trailer that went out of control hit some parked vehicles along the roadway at 4:30pm.  According to state police, a driver from New Jersey drifted off the roadway and collided with a pickup truck and a tractor-trailer parked along the shoulder with two men there working on a tire-change.  One of the men was transported from the scene with minor injuries.  The New Jersey driver is facing at-fault charges from the accident.  According to PennDOT, I-80 westbound fully reopened after 8pm.

HAM RADIO EVENT IN MONTOURSVILLE

This weekend, there will be an annual national event for thousands of Ham radio operators in the US and Canada with a local opportunity.  According to the Sun Gazette, operators from the Bald Eagle Repeater Association in conjunction with American Radio Repeater League, will gather in Indian park in Montoursville Saturday from 2pm until dark to participate in a national ham radio exercise that has been organized as an annual amateur radio activity since 1933 by The National Association for Amateur Radio in the United States.  Get details about the event that happens every 4^th Saturday in June at arrl.org.

HIGH SPEED CHASE LEADS TO ARREST IN SHAMOKIN

A motorcyclist from Sunbury was charged in May for leading police on a high speed chase.  According to state police at Milton, they attempted to stop 43-year-old Ali Martin after he allegedly committed a traffic violation in Northumberland.  Martin fled the scene at high speeds and troopers from Stonington and Milton apprehended him a short time later.  Martin of Sunbury is facing charges of fleeing and eluding police, suspicion of DUI, driving while DUI suspended as well as multiple summary violations.

WEST MILTON MAN ARRESTED IN WALMART PARKING LOT

A man from West Milton was arrested after he was seen on video urinating on a vehicle in the parking lot of the Lewisburg Walmart.  According to state police they were called to the store on June 10^th for reports of indecent exposure, but when they looked at the video, it confirmed the actions of 76 year old Dennis Schwartz, and a 17 year old man was the victim.  Schwartz was charged with summaries of public drunkenness and disorderly conduct with a preliminary hearing on July 11^th.

FORMER JS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR SUES OVER CIVIL RIGHTS

A federal lawsuit has been filed by a former athletic director at Jersey Shore Area School District citing a hostile work environment and dismissal over being a woman.  According to the Sun Gazette, Serena Pfaff-Henry who was hired by the school in 2019, accuses the Superintendent, Dr. Brian Ulmer of disparate treatment and violating her civil rights.  In a statement by the district, Pfaff-Henry was dismissed from her position based on four incidents in which the school board acted because they have a right to remove her based on reported incompetence, improper conduct or neglect of duty.  Pfaff-Henry requested a jury trial with Chief U.S. Middle District Judge Matthew W. Brann.

LUDO WILL PROVIDE EMOTIONAL SUPPORT FOR SOME INMATES

During the Prison Board meeting in June, it was decided that Ludo the Lycoming County Facility Dog will make visits to the county’s Pre-Release Center on a regular basis, if available.  According to the Sun Gazette, Warden Brad Shoemaker said a recent request by a resident at the center, showed that Ludo as an emotional animal worked out well in that instance, and is a valid program to continue for the inmates. Ludo and his owner, Jerri Rook will make it a regular part of the dog’s work.  The next prison board meeting is July 12^th at the Third Street Plaza at 8:30pm.

LEWISTOWN SHOOTER KILLED WHEN POLICE RETURN FIRE

A Lewistown man was killed after he first shot at officers in Mifflin County on Monday evening, and they returned fire.  According to Pennsylvania State Police, they responded when 29 year old Ridge Rhodes shot at local police on West Fourth Street in Lewistown at about 8:30pm.  Local police shot back at Rhodes causing fatal injuries.  State police and the Mifflin County District Attorney’s office have opened an investigation.  No officers were hurt in the shooting.

IMPAIRED MAN ARRESTED AFTER TWO CALLS FROM POLICE

A man who was arrested after city police found him at the heart of two incidents they were called to on May 22nd, had a preliminary hearing this week in Lycoming County Court. According to North Central PA dot com, Police report Troy Thomas of Williamsport was doing karate moves and speaking nonsensically near the corner of W. Fourth Street and Seventh Avenue and later admitted that he was under the influence of PCP and alcohol.  Thomas was evaluated at a local hospital and sent home, just a few hours before police were called to another incident near the 1000 block of Vine Avenue involving Thomas once again where a relative said he was trying to take a weapon.  He was charged with disorderly conduct and public drunkenness. 

STUDY RECOMMENDS SCHOOL CONSOLIDATION

The study compiled by a firm hired by the Montoursville Area School District to assess the need for elementary school buildings in the district, recommends that Lyter Elementary and Loyalsock Valley Elementary School students should be consolidated at the Lyter building.  According to the Sun Gazette, an executive from the firm, SiteLogIQ, presented the study, which indicated that the cost of maintaining the Loyalsock Valley building is outpacing the costs for building a new school.  The study also noted that repairs and renovations at Loyalsock Valley were estimated at over 19 million, but at Lyter Elementary the upgrades totaled just over 17 million dollars. 

FLAG DAY CEREMONY FRIDAY AT PENN COLLEGE

The 44^th Anthony DiSalvo Flags Across America celebration at Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport to honor the American flag  for Flag Day will be held tomorrow.  According to the Sun Gazette, the public is invited to the parking lot south of the Madigan Library and southeast of the Bush Campus Center at Penn College for the traditional event.  There will be a flag march prior to the celebration on the campus grounds (which will form at 6:30p) for members of the Susquehanna Council of Boy Scouts of America and their guests, before the speakers and presentation for Flag Day begins at 7pm.  The namesakle of the event, Anthony DiSalvo, was a beloved local figure and long-time BSA leader, who spearheaded the drive to obtain the flag at Penn College, and started the first Flag Day flag march in the Williamsport area.

TEXAS MAN ARRESTED FOR DISTURBANCE

A Texas man caused a disturbance at a fast food restaurant at the 50 block of Maynard Street May 25^th and is being held in Lycoming county prison awaiting his preliminary hearing.  According to North Central PA dot com,  Jeris Seth Sundell of San Antonio was asked to leave the Burger King by the staff who allegedly observed him alarming patrons and throwing objects in the dining room.  Witnesses said Sundell smelled of alcohol and had trouble standing on his feet.  Police took Sundell into custody and charged him with disorderly conduct and public drunkenness, his preliminary hearing is June 24^th.

MIFFLINBURG SCHOOL BOARD SEEKS ARCHITECTURE FIRM

The Mifflinburg School District said at their meeting this week, that they are looking for an architect of record for services to be on call when the board needs drawings for different projects, and will soon be seeking proposals.  According to the Daily Item, requests are expected to be issued by the board in the next few weeks, and they expect a late July response deadline and discussion at the August work session.  The successful candidate would enter into a non-exclusive professional service agreement with the district to develop a professional relationship.  The district set aside $1.25 million for upcoming track projects and agriculture improvements.

CASHLESS TOLLS COMING TO TURNPIKE STARTING IN 2026

There’s a change coming to Pennsylvania Toll Booths along the Turnpike.  According to the Turnpike commission, it will convert booths to open road tolling  or ORT, which is a cashless, free-flowing mode of collecting tolls without traditional toll plazas.   Tolls will be charged electronically as customers drive at highway speeds without slowing down or stopping under the gantries –  the road space between interchanges. ORT will begin in 2025 in the eastern part of the state and expand to the western region of the PA Turnpike beginning in late 2026.  Construction is expected to be completed in 2027.  EZ passes will also be authorized for use through the ORT system.  The cost of the project is 50 million dollars but is projected to save the commonwealth 25 million per year.

LITTLE LEAGUE SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED

The schedule for the 2024 Little League Baseball World Series Game schedule has been announced, set to begin August 14^th .  The Little League Classic is scheduled for Sunday evening August 18^th at 7pm at Historic Bowman field between the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers. The Challenger Division Game is August 26^th  at 10:30am at Volunteer stadium between Challenger of Lancaster and NY’s District 8 Challenger team, presented by Eggland’s Best.  All Little league Games will be played in South Williamsport and will be broadcast on ESPN.
