MOTORIST SENTENCED FOR CAUSING SERIOUS ACCIDENT
A driver who seriously injured another motorist in March of 2018 is heading to jail this week.  43 year old Jason Wilson was sentenced to 9 to 23 months in prison after pleading guilty to 3rd degree felony accident involving injury charges on December 6th and will begin serving this Friday. According to North Central PA dot com, Wilson crossed a double yellow line at 7:30 am March 2nd 2018, after exiting a downhill curve on Route 87 just north of Carey Hill Road in Montoursville. Wilson’s vehicle slammed into the driver’s side of Alison B. Landgrebe’s Jeep. Both drivers sustained serious injuries.  Wilson was alSo charged with driving under a suspended license.  He must serve jail time, pay restitution, fines, attend an impact panel and perform 100 hours of community service.

NEW BOARD MEMBER AT JERSEY SHORE SCHOOLS
The Jersey Shore Area School board approved a new board member last night.  According to the Sun Gazette, David Becker was voted in by a 6-2 vote after answering questions from board members about their opinions and qualifications surrounding school curriculum and working with taxpayer dollars.  Becker, from Piatt Township, fills the seat available after Kelly Wasson resigned last month to take a full time position at the school district.  Becker is a former district teacher, currently instructing IT at Penn College.  The next Jersey Shore Area School Board meeting is January 13th.

INMATES RAISE MONEY FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS
An inmate organization at SCI Coal Township has donated to the Northumberland-Snyder County Special Olympics.  Inmate members of the Triumph organization, coordinated a fund drive in November and presented a check for 5 thousand dollars to representatives of the group last week.  Another inmate group at SCI Coal Township, The Lifeline Organization, donated $1000 to the Mount Carmel Food Pantry.

OFFICIALS WARN OF DOG LICENSE SCAM
Officials from the Commonwealth of PA have caught certain websites offering fraudulent Pennsylvania dog licenses, according to the PA Department of Agriculture.  WKOK reports that the general rule about purchasing a license for your dog when searching the internet is to only use addresses that end in dot gov.  Dot com websites offering dog licenses have a more likely potential to be a scam. Lycoming County residents can start a search at license your dog pa.pa.gov.   All dogs three months or older must be licensed by Jan. 1 of each year. An annual license is $8.50  and if the animal is spayed or neutered, the annual fee is $6.50.

HEROIN DEALER SENTENCED TO STATE PRISON
A city man who sold heroin to a confidential informant in Williamsport has been sentenced to 2 years in State Prison.  According to North Central PA dot com, the incident occurred on Tinsman Avenue in Williamsport on January 2, 2019.  Court reports say 27 year old Savoy J. Jennings, also known as “Vortex,” pleaded guilty to one ungraded felony count of possession with intent to deliver heroin on December 3 in Lycoming County Court .

FUNERAL CAN MOVE FORWARD IN TREVORTON ABUSE CASE
A judge has ruled in the case of Arabella Parker’s funeral arrangements.  The 3 year old girl who is the victim in the alleged Trevorton abuse case that sent parker’s mother Samantha Delcamp and the boyfriend Jahrid Brugess to prison on abuse charges.  A Northumberland County judge ruled in favor of Parker’s Aunt and legal guardian, Mandy Kegler and her wishes to have the child cremated and a funeral proceed.  That ruling will supersede the wishes of Parker’s jailed father, Karl Parker, who at SCI Coal Township on a DUI charge.  Arabella Parker died of her injuries November 22nd of this year

REGIONALIZATION APPROVED FOR SOUTHSIDE, DUBOISTOWN
An agreement has been reached and approved between South Williamsport and DuBoistown providing police protection for both communities and the promise of more hours of patrol availability.  The South Williamsport and DuBoistown Borough Councils say the boroughs will share 10 officers and use the DuBoistown police station as a sub-station.  A law enforcement contract makes DuBoistown Chief Norman Hager a borough community resource officer on probationary status for 6 months.  DuBoistown will pay about 118 thousand dollars a year with 3 percent salary increases over 5 years.  South Williamsport’s costs will not change. The agreement is in place for the start of 2020.

PRESIDENT TRUMP COMES TO HERSHEY TONIGHT
President Donald Trump will be at Hershey’s Giant Center tonight in one of multiple campaign stops in battleground states as the impeachment inquiry moves forward. According to the York Daily Record, President Trump will be accompanied by Vice President Mike Pence during a “Keep America Great” rally at 7pm., the first time the president and vice president have appeared together in Hershey since they came for the “Thank You” tour on Dec. 15, 2016.  This will be the president’s 35th visit to Pennsylvania since announcing his candidacy during the 2016 election.

INJURY ACCIDENT IN LOYALSOCK TOWNSHIP
An accident involving injuries has occurred in Loyalsock township that shut down a major roadway around 7:45 this morning.  According to scanner reports, the crash blocked the 2100 block of Northway Road.  Emergency medical crews arrived on the scene and treated at least one patient who was reportedly unconscious from the wreck.  Northway Road was blocked south of the accident at 4 mile drive and north of the accident at Northway Road and Northway Road Extension, however the road reopened around 8:30am.

TEEN DRIVER WITHOUT LICENSE CRASHES WHILE RACING
A teen driver who was unlicensed and uninsured, was racing another driver Friday and crashed in Middlecreek township according to State Police.  WKOK reports that 18 year old Robert Petty was driving on Church Road around 8am December 6th and went off the road failing to negotiate a curve and flipped the car after hitting a boulder.  Petty was treated at Evangelical Community Hospital and charged with citations for racing and careless driving, driving without a license and insurance and other charges.  The other unnamed driver was also charged with a traffic citation for racing.  Middleburg Reliance Ambulance and Middlecreek Fire Co. Squad 12 responded to the accident.

MAN STEALS DEBIT CARD OF A HOSPITALIZED WOMAN
A Montoursville man stole money from a debit card of a hospitalized woman between August 30th and September 4th of this year.  The woman who was in the hospital later died.  According to North Central PA dot com the victim’s family discovered over 800 dollars in charges and police say 29 year old Douglas Charles Harding was observed making a purchase on surveillance video with the card. Harding was charged November 18th with felony unauthorized access of a card, and one count of identity theft. Harding is scheduled for a formal arraignment December 23rd.

CITY NAMING ORDINANCE DISCUSSION TABLED
In order to properly review material related to the city’s updated naming ordinance that has recently been addressed, Williamsport City Council members tabled the decision on the process.  According to the Sun Gazette, the new ordinance sets up guidelines for naming property and streets that had not been in place before.  Requirements to publicly advertise a vote on the measure would not be in place by this week’s council meeting either and some council members believe mayor elect should be allowed input.  Council is expected to meet this Thursday, the last time before Christmas, in order to adopt the recently proposed 2020 budget which included a .25 mill tax hike.

SOUTHERN COLUMBIA WINS 3RD CONSECUTIVE STATE TITLE
The Southern Columbia Tigers clinched the state title Friday in Hershey against  Avonworth in a 74-7 routing, making them the winningest High School Football program in PA.  The championship is the team’s third in a row.  Head coach Jim Roth is now in a tie for second place in all-time wins in the state with 444.

SHAMOKIN HOME DISPLACES FAMILY OF SIX
A family of six were forced out of their house following a fire Sunday night in Northumberland County.  Police say the fire started at the home along South Gold Street in Shamokin around 9pm.   Fire officials say the flames started in the chimney and spread to the walls. The fire was controlled by 9:45 p.m. Sunday night and no injuries were reported.  According to WKOK, volunteer fire crews from Coal Township, Shamokin, Kulpmont, Mount Carmel, Rapho Township, and Area Services EMS responded to the incident.

MOVING COMPANY EMPLOYEE STOLE FROM CUSTOMER
A man working for a moving company stole an envelope of $4300 cash from a dresser drawer last month and later admitted taking the money.  According to North Central PA dot com a victim reported the theft November 28th and police interviewed employees of the moving company after the incident.  28 year old Anthony Michael Scampone of Muncy had left work early that day, but police discovered that he was in possession of cash he admitted wasn’t his. Scampone had also given some money to family and friends.  He was charged with several counts of third degree felony theft and is in Lycoming County Prison.

OFFICIALS RESPOND TO FIRE MAN HAS ALLIGATORS INSIDE
A man from Mount Carmel was charged with obstruction of administration of the law after a chimney fire prompted officials to come to the home but weren’t allowed in.  41 year old Juan Puesan of 21 West Avenue, was arrested after firefighters eventually entered and discovered numerous animals including 2 foot long alligators were discovered. Puesan was taken to Northumberland County Jail

TREE REMOVAL ON ROUTE 15 TUESDAY
There will be a tree removed along Route 15 in South Williamsport tomorrow near the Little League museum.  According to Penn DOT, contractors will trim the overhead canopy and bring down one large tree between 9am and 3pm Tuesday near the 500 block of Route 15 and will close the  northbound lane and the northbound shoulder.  With traffic sharing the southbound lanes for passing.  The work should only take one day to complete.

WOMAN THROWS BRICK THROUGH CAR WINDOW
A Williamsport woman went to jail last week for throwing a brick through a window of a car and injuring a child inside.  According to the North Central PA dot com, police say 31 year old, Jessica N. Lane, was intoxicated and shattered the driver’s side window of a vehicle in Williamsport around 8:45 pm on November 28th and later admitted to police that she struck the child  with a closed fist twice.  Emergency service treated the child at the scene and Lane was charged with assault and endangering the welfare of a child.  She was unable to make the 25,000 straight bail and was taken to Lycoming County prison.

LOCAL HOSPITAL CLOSING NEXT YEAR
UPMC Susquehanna Community Hospital Sunbury will be closing its doors by March 31st 2020 according to an announcement yesterday by UPMC Susquehanna President Steven Johnson.  The Daily Item reports that the closing will eliminate 150 local jobs and could leave Sunbury without a local hospital for the first time in 120 years.   According to 2017 tax filings, the hospital reported a $2 million deficit.  According to Johnson, citing market data, patients are utilizing facilities other than UPMC Susquehanna Sunbury for their care prompting the closing.

CITY BUDGET APPROVED WITH A TAX-HIKE
A proposed budget for the City of Williamsport was passed by City Council on the first reading at a meeting last night but, it included a tax-hike, counter to the no-tax hike proposal Mayor Campana submitted last month.  The Council voted 6-1 to approve the budget as read but added a tax increase.  It amounts to .25 mills, bringing real estate taxes to 15 dollars and 72 cents per one thousand dollars of assessed property value.  Mayor-elect and Councilman Derek Slaughter, was the dissenting vote.  According to the Sun Gazette, personnel costs are 85 percent of the overall spending plan.

SO. CO. TIGERS COULD MAKE PA HISTORY
The Southern Columbia High School football team is heading to Hershey Stadium today at 1pm to hopefully make state history. It could be their 10th PIAA Class 2A state title and third in a row, when the Tigers face Avonworth out of District 7. According to WKOK, head coach Jim Roth wants to see victory for his five seniors on a team with a record breaking win for most championships in the state. The team earned their state appearance today by beating Richland last Friday 49-27.

TWO INMATES CHARGED WITH ASSAULT
Incidents have taken place in the Northumberland County Prison that have led to the arrest of two inmates.  According to the Daily Item Brett Landau was charged with simple assault and harassment there after a planned and unprovoked attack that injured another inmate November 2nd, and 27 year old Kyle McDaniel was also charged with simple assault for an attack of an inmate November 27th.  The local magistrate handle the cases according to the Northumberland county District Atrtorney.

SUNBURY MAYOR REACTS TO HOSPITAL CLOSING
Sunbury Mayor Kurt Karlovich made a statement yesterday addressing information he received about UPMC Sunbury closing the Community Hospital next year.  Karlovich confirmed that he only learned that the hospital entity was closing it’s doors through media channels.  He made note of the recent request by UPMC to become tax exempt as a non-profit system, but noted that the group stated publicly on their website that they provided 1.2 billion dollars of IRS-defined community benefits in 2019.. The mayor also told WKOK that he is committed to bring another medical facility to step in where UPMC has now decided to step away. Sunbury City Administrator Jody Ocker said the city did receive a courtesy call from UPMC President Bob Cane later Thursday morning.

COMMISSIONERS APPROVE REFINANCING
Refinancing of bonds for capital projects for water and sewage was approved by the Lycoming County Commissioners at Thursday’s meeting, according to the Sun Gazette.  Taking advantage of the lower interest rates were the motivation behind the refinancing The approval is expected to bring a cost savings of at least $150,000 for the Lycoming County Water & Sewage Authority.

PENNDOT WILL DEDICATE BRIDGES TO FALLEN COWORKERS
PennDOT announced yesterday a statewide effort to memorialize fallen employees with bridge dedications for employees who died while on duty since 1970.  PennDOT will work with the General Assembly to pass a naming authorization bill in the spring 2020 legislative session.  PennDOT’s intent, with the involvement the family, is to honor each fallen PennDOT worker as an acknowledgement of their service to Pennsylvania. .  The initiative was inspired by the naming of a bridge in Northumberland County for PennDOT District 3 employee Harold “Don” Whipple, who was killed in the line of duty in 2016.

SEDA-COG NAMES NEW OFFICERS
Board officers for SEDA-Council of Governments (SEDA-COG) were elected at Wednesday’s public meeting. Columbia County Commissioner Rich Ridgway, was elected president; Juniata County Commissioner Mark Partner, first vice president; Mifflin County Commissioner Kevin Kodish, second vice president, Larry Reisinger of Perry County, secretary; and Dennis Van Benthuysen of Snyder County, treasurer.  The SEDA-COG board is a 22-member, county-based policy board representing both public and private sectors. Appointments and reappointments for SEDA-COG board members will take place in January.

VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER LOSES HOME TO FIRE
A 10-year volunteer for the Picture Rocks Fire Company lost his home along Boak Avenue in Hughesville yesterday morning in a fire.  Firefighters from Picture Rocks, Muncy Township, Muncy Creek Township and Montgomery worked together to extinguish the blaze that destroyed the mobile home of Zach Babb.  According to the Sun Gazette, Babbs’ two dogs were trapped in the home and neighbors attempted to rescue them, but they perished in the fire.  Fire officials have not determined the cause of the blaze at this time. Picture Rocks Fire Chief Larry Ryder said the company will now work to determine what assistance their co-worker will need to recover.

GRANT AWARDED TO CITY HOMELESS SHELTER
A grant has been awarded to the American Rescue Workers in Williamsport which will help make critical structural improvements to its Saving Grace Shelter building  formerly the Grace United Methodist Church built in the late 1800s.  According to the Sun Gazette , the PPL foundation awarded the 40 thousand dollars to the non-profit, which provides services to homeless families in the county, to repair the damaged roof, repair a heating unit and other repairs.  The local grant from the PPL Foundation is part of 575 thousand dollars recently allocated for 12 other organizations working to improve education and promote development of sustainable communities.

UPMC FILES AN APPEAL FOR TAX EXEMPTION
Tax revenues are still in question in Northumberland County after UPMC in Sunbury filed for an appeal this week after their tax exemption request for 20 parcels was denied last October.  According to WKOK, County Solicitor Frank Garrigan will file a response today to the appeal.  UPMC has requested tax exemption saying their work is public charity.  If the exemption is granted, it will cost the county, the city of Sunbury, and the Shikellamy School District more than $370,000 in annual real estate tax revenue.

DICKENS OF A CHRISTMAS THIS WEEKEND IN WELLSBORO
If you’re heading to Tioga County this weekend, you might want to join the Wellsboro Chamber of Commerce and experience a Dickens of a Christmas.  The 36th Annual event is Friday to Sunday, but closes the roads in Wellsboro Saturday at 9am for over 135 outdoor vendors, theater presentations and musical performances. Saturday at 5:30 p.m. there’s the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony with Santa and a carol sing on the Green on Main Street and enjoy several performances of “A Christmas Carol” on Saturday and Sunday at the Deane Center.

ELDERLY MAN DIES IN FIRE
Towanda State Police say a man died in a fire in New Albany Wednesday after a fire occurred around 11 am at 3272 Pelton Hill Road.  According to the Sun Gazette, the Bradford County coroner, Thomas Carman, said remains of 71-year-old, Richard J. Bongiovanni were found in the home where he was a resident.  An autopsy and toxicology tests will be conducted this week in Binghamton NY.

WIDE LOAD COMING FROM ERIE TO LOCK HAVEN
A wide load heading to Lock Haven will be moving across Pennsylvania today and tomorrow and impacting traffic along the way.  According to PennDOT, a Yankee Dryer super load will be transported 300 miles for the next few days from the Port of Erie to First Quality Tissue in Lock Haven and throughout the trip will use cross overs and unusual traffic patterns with flaggers as the load crosses traffic.  The convoy will move at an average of 15 miles per hour and start in Erie County, and crossing into Clinton County late Friday affecting traffic patterns along Mill Hall Road, Rt 220 South as well as 120 East in Lock Haven.

PENN COLLEGE STUDENTS PETITION TO GRADUATE
Almost 300 students have petitioned to graduate and receive their degrees for the Fall 2019 semester at Pennsylvania College of Technology.  The student speaker will be Stephanie Petrison, of Landenberg, who will receive a bachelor of science in business administration, as well as Ryan Good, assistant professor of welding who was presented with the esteemed Veronica M. Muzic Master Teacher Award last May.  Penn College president Dr. Davie Jane Gilmour will be joined by state Sen. Gene Yaw, chairman of the college’s board of directors, to confer degrees and certificates upon the graduates. The commencement ceremony will be held at 11a on December. 21st, at the Community Arts Center, 220 W. Fourth St. in Wmspt.

PA DOG LICENSES ON SALE NOW
Pennsylvania Dog licenses went on sale last Monday.  Dog owners who need to purchase 2020dog licenses may do so at the Lycoming County Treasurer’s office located at 33 West Third Street, Williamsport.  All dogs three months or older must be licensed by January 1st of each year as required by state law.  Owners who do not license their dogs or have a current rabies vaccination can be cited with a maximum fine of $300 per dog along with assessed court costs. The fee for an annual dog license is $8.50.  If the dog is spayed or neutered, the fee is $6.50.  Senior citizens and the disabled may purchase an annual license for $6.50 or $4.50 if the dog is spayed or neutered.
