VICTIM DIES IN VIOLENT CRASH
A violent crash near Ralston killed one man Sunday when he went off the roadway and struck a tree  in McIntyre Township.  According to the Sun Gazette, police said Joseph Yuscavage was traveling south on Route 14 around noontime and lost control of his 2016 Hyundai Elantra.  Witnesses said the man ‘s car went airborne, striking a tree and sending debris into a yard.  Volunteer firefighters had to free Yuscavages body from the vehicle by removing the roof of the car.  The Lycoming County Chief deputy coroner pronounced the man dead at the scene.

THREE DISPLACED BY FIRE
A fire on Walnut Street Saturday has left three people without a place to live.  According to the Sun Gazette three unnamed tenants were alerted by a smoke detector of a small fire that started in the attic.  According to fire officials the blaze started in a second floor wall and got to the attic.  The Red Cross is assisting those who were affected by the weekend fire.  Police are investigating the cause.

PIPE BOMB DEVICE FOUND BY POLICE
A suspected explosive device was discovered and rendered safe Saturday morning at the Rails Trails area near Irondale Road, according to Bloomsburg police.  According to the News Item, the Pennsylvania State Police Hazardous Device and Explosive Section said the device was an improvised pipe bomb which will now be sent to the State police lab for further investigation.  The Bloomsburg Police Department is asking for help in the case – if you have information contact Sgt. Michael Fosse at 570-784-4155 Ext. 162.

GATEWAY PROJECT RESUMES TODAY
East Third Street will be closed between State Street and Basin Street in Williamsport today.  According to PennDOT, the Gateway Project is set to resume construction today and continue through August 18. All travel lanes will be closed during this time. A detour with alternative routes is in place as well as alternative routes to local businesses. The Gateway Project is a three-year, $10 million reconstruction project which partners the City of Williamsport, Lycoming College, and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

IRATE PARENT CHARGED WITH DISORDERLY CONDUCT
Hughesville police say an irate parent has had charges filed against him after he caused a disturbance on Ashkar Elementary School property.  According to administrators, Charles Hoinowski became irate about text alerts concerning his children’s attendance and refused to leave the property when asked.  According to North Central Pa dot com, 47 year old Charles Hoinowski has been involved in previous incidents which led to the school attorney sending a letter requesting the man make an appointment before coming to the school.  Hoinowski later apologized, but has been charged with defiant trespass and disorderly conduct charges with a preliminary hearing March 13^th.

ENVIRONMENTAL CHARGES FOR NORTHUMBERLAND MAN
The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania has indicted a Northumberland County Man jury on three violations of the Toxic Substance Control Act of 1976.  According to a press release by the court, 73 year old Dennis Morgan faces charges after allegedly failing to provide a lead hazard pamphlet or warning and failed to retain records as required by the Code of Federal Regulations in violation of the Toxic Substances Control Act.  This provides the EPA with the authority for record-keeping and testing, and enforcing restrictions relating to chemical substances and or mixtures. The maximum penalty for each violation under federal law is 1 year of imprisonment, 1 year of supervised release, and a fine of $100,000.

PENNDOT REMOVING TREES ON ROUTE 220 THIS WEEK
There will be a tree removal project on Route 220 southbound starting tomorrow.  According to PennDOT there will be single lane closure  around the West 4th St. interchange, in Woodward Township.  A sub-contractor will be on site removing trees to clear for overhead utility relocation, this Tuesday, and Wednesday between 7am and 3pm.The right lane will be restricted while the work is being completed as part of the 220 Safety Corridor Project.

EASTER EGG HUNT SCHEDULED
Williamsport’s Easter Egg hunt has been scheduled, according to the office of Mayor Derek Slaughter.  According to the Sun Gazette, the annual event at Brandon Park will be March 28^th at 2pm near the Dr. Kenneth Cooper bandshell.  It is open to all children up to the age of 10.  The city has asked the public to bring their own basket of bag this year, and the of course,  the Easter Bunny will be on hand.  Children will be separated in to 5 age divisions.  April 4^th is the rain/snow date.

Northwest Regional Wresting Championship

Selinsgrove junior, Nat Schon, the defending state champion at 220 pounds was topped in the Class 3A match. He was edged by Erie Cathedral Preps’ Dorian Crosby in the final. Coy Bastian placed second at 160, and Ryan Aument was third at 195.

Milton’s Cyler Crawford won the Class 2A Northeast Regional 132-pound title over rival Noah Hunt of Warrior Run. Crawford was on of 5 Valley wrestlers to win gold medals. The other four came from Southern Columbia: Patric Edmondson, Wesley Barnes, Gaidge Garcia and Lear Quinton. In addition to Hunt, the other silver medalists were Southern’s Gavin Garcia and Cade Linn, and Line Mountain’s Jacob Feese.

PENN COLLEGE STUDENT FOUND SAFE
The student at Penn College who was reported missing by family and friends and  seen over the last few days by witnesses and Police has been found safe.  According to North Central PA dot com, Joshua Lane Stanley, a freshman, left campus on foot to meet a friend last Sunday evening despite having a car on campus Penn College which concerned those who knew him.  Stanley told police he went to visit a friend in Penn State and is at this time reunited with family.

THREE TENANTS RESCUED FROM FIRE
Williamsport firefighters rescued 3 men from third floor apartments after a fire that broke out Monday morning in the 300 block of Park Avenue.  According to the Sun Gazette, firefighters arrived on the scene after 2:30am and people were yelling from the back of the building. Two roommates were pulled from a smoke filled room to the fire escape, and a third tenant was taken by the city’s tower truck through the apartment window.  He is now being treated for minor injuries and smoke inhalation.  According to City fire officials 16 people were displaced by the blaze in the 12 unit apartment complex that sustained heat and smoke damage throughout the first floor.

CITY COUNCIL SEEKINGANSWERS FOR CITY HALL COMPLIANCE
Williamsport City Council is working toward finding answers about what avenue to take about staying in City Hall or finding another option.  According to the Sun Gazette, Mayor Derek Slaughter said that an ad hoc committee to find the most economical answers may be created soon, so that options and costs can be assessed.  According to city administrators, until they have answers on how to make City Hall accessible for citizens for disabilities, public meetings are all to be held at Trade and Transit Centre II

NEW SUPERINTENDENT AT SELINSGROVE
elinsgrove School district has a new superintendent after a Tuesday night approval at the Selinsgrove school district board meeting.  Following the resignation of current superintendent Chad Cohrs at the end of the 2019-2020 school year, Dr. Frank Jankowski will be installed as district superintendent on July 11th.  The vote was 5-0 for Dr. Jankowski who came from the Muncy school district both as a building principal and a teacher and has been in the Selinsgrove School district for two years as assistant superintendent.

MAN TELLS POLICE HE HIT VICTIM WITH A GUN
A man from Williamsport has been charged with several counts after police say he was in an argument and a gun he was holding misfired.  According to North Central Pa dot com, 31 year old Derrick Ponds was identified as the alleged shooter at a home on Memorial Avenue.  Ponds called 911 himself to report  the incident, and  told police that he hit a victim with a gun he had found while walking to the property.  Police found evidence of a shooting and arrested Ponds.  He was taken to Lycoming County Prison on Feb. 10 in lieu of $95,000 bail with a formal arraignment scheduled for March 9^th.

MIDDLEBURG FIRE STARTED AFTER STOVE CLEANING
A man cleaning his pellet stove may have caused a fire that damaged the first and second floors of his Middleburg home yesterday.  According to the Daily Item, the homeowner Larry Campbell was left temporarily homeless after embers may have caught some children’s toys on fire and started the blaze.  The fire marshall will investigate today to confirm.  Several blocks of Main street in Middleburg were closed last night when fire companies from Middleburg, Kreamer, Penns Creek,  Shamokin Dam and Mifflinburg were on the scene after 7:30pm.

FIRST SUPERVISED INJECTION CLINIC TO OPEN IN PA
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Pennsylvania will next week open the nation’s first supervised-injection site in an effort to combat the opioid epidemic in South Philadelphia. The nonprofit, Safehouse, will open the site, and announce details of their plan at a news conference today.   A federal judge entered a final ruling yesterday that the proposed facility would not violate federal law. Sources familiar with the decision confirmed that the site would operate out of Constitution Health Plaza, 1930 S. Broad St., near Passyunk Avenue. The site would have a separate entrance for its clients.

LOCAL HOSPITALS ARE READY FOR THE CORONA VIRUS
Two Lewisburg hospitals have told local media outlets that they are prepared and have emergency plans ready in case of an outbreak of the Coronavirus.  Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, and Evangelical Community Hospital say they check for updates from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who said Tuesday that there were 53 confirmed cases in the U.S..   Dr. Mark Shelly, epidemiologist and director of infection control for Geisinger, said Geisinger has held meetings to discuss possible scenarios and emergency planning. Matt Exley, Evangelical’s emergency preparedness coordinator, said the hospital is part of the North Central Health Care Coalition of hospitals and other medical care services in seven counties that could provide backup to the hospital.

BOIL-WATER ADVISORY LIFTED
The boil-water advisory that was in place in Loyalsock Township after a water main break earlier this week has been lifted.  According to a statement by the Williamsport Water and Sewer Authority after the repair of the water main, crews flushed the system to correct the problem and according to the Sun Gazette, test results say the water is safe.  Over 300 customers along the 1800 block of Northway Road were affected by the advisory which was officially over before noon yesterday.

MIDDLEBURG BANK ROBBER SENTENCED
A man who robbed a bank in Middleburg in 2016 will serve several related sentences for crimes he committed concurrently for up to 20 years.  According to Snyder county authorities, Gregory Null admitted to stealing money from a Middleburg bank and then fleeing to Georgia where he was captured.  Null was also convicted of a few other felonies including carrying a firearm without a license.    Judge Michael Hudock imposed the 6-20 year sentence.

REHAB FACILITY IN SUNBURY WILL ALSO CLOSE
Along with the UPMC Hospital in Sunbury closing March 31st , the Sunbury Community Health and Rehabilitation facility will also close.  The closure puts 20 employees out of work and there will be a relocation of about 21 residents. According to the Daily Item, the rehab center on the second floor of UPMC Susquehanna Sunbury, 350 N. 11th St., is owned by Kling Health Services who originally expected to complete a 20 year lease.  According to President David Klingerman, with the pending sale of the building, it was in the best interest of the residents to discontinue operations there.

WILLIAMSPORT NEWSPAPER ARCHIVES TO BE DIGITIZED
A searchable newspaper archive will be available at the James V. Brown Library by the end of the summer after the digitizing process of the local publications has begun.  According to library administrators, searches before this needed to done using specific dates, but with the new content available from 414 reels of microfilm, it will be searchable using natural language and key words.  According to the Sun Gazette, the first of the reels will be available by March 30^th.  Publications include editions of the Williamsport Sun-Gazette, the Grit and other publications from 1807 until now.

MORRIS WOMAN PLEADS NO CONTEST TO MANSLAUGHTER
A Morris woman has put in a plea of no contest to involuntary manslaughter this week in the death of Luke Beatty in August 2018.  According to the Sun Gazette, police say 23 year old Fallon Mae Davis hit Luke Beatty in his Lewis Township driveway with her car causing massive injuries and didn’t call for emergency crews to help him, instead calling a friend who had been drinking in Williamsport with the pair earlier in the day. Davis has a sentencing hearing April 20^th in front of President Judge Nancy Butts, who will consider the plea deal of two and a half to five years in prison.

FELONY PORNOGRAPHY CHARGE FOR LOCK HAVEN MAN
A Lock Haven man faces 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to a felony count of child pornography.  According to North Central PA dot com, 37 year old Michael S. Grenninger admitted in US Middle District Court  to offering an undercover agent posing as a 12 year old girl money for sex in 2016 in Lock Haven.  Other counts of possession of child pornography charges are expected to be withdrawn at Grenninger’s next hearing which is not yet set.

NEW FOOTBALL COACH FOR SHIKELLAMY
A former Danville Football coach will join the Shikellamy Braves as their new coach this year.  According to District Superintendent Dr. Jason Bendle, there was a special meeting last night for the school board to hire Jim Keiser by a vote of 6-3.  According to the Daily Item, Bender said Keiser was the successful candidate out of multiple candidates for the job,  Keiser coached for 10 years at Danville.

POLICE CHIEF ASKS COUNCIL FOR GRANT FUNDS TO HIRE SRO
Chief of Police Damon Hagan addressed City Council in a packed Michael Ross Event room in the first of the meetings held at the Trade and Transit Centre II.  According to the Sun Gazette, Hagan asked the administration to seek a federal grant available through the U.S. Department of Justice COPS Hiring Grant Program, to help to pay a majority of costs to get a second full-time school resource officer into the Williasmport Area School District .  Hagan said the grant includes having the city pay 25 percent of the costs over three years and a full payment for the fourth year for the full-time officer.  Councilwoman Liz Miele and six others approved the police request with questions going forward.

YMCA AND SPECIAL OLYMPIC TEAM UP
Special Olympics Pennsylvania (SOPA) and the River Valley Regional YMCA will increase fitness and training opportunities for athletes with intellectual disabilities. Starting  March 1, 2020, the partnership will connect athletes with six YMCA facilities in Williamsport, Muncy, Jersey Shore, Lock Haven, Mansfield and Towanda.  According to  a press release from the River Valley YMCA,  Special Olympians can struggle to find suitable locations to train and host local competitions year round. VICTIM UPDATE FROM JERSEY SHORE FIRE
More details have come forth about the weekend fire at the Broadway Hotel on S. Broad St. in Jersey Shore.  According to the Sun Gazette, the Assistant chief of Citizen’s Hose Company, Ethan Goodbrod and Jeremy Frantz, rescued trapped tenant, Matthew White, from the third floor after smashing out an air conditioner and carrying him down the fire truck ladder.  Another tenant, Michael Spotts, who lived on the second floor, suffered burns on his hands and was treated by emergency crews after getting out of the building.  According to a family member, Spotts is at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville and is being treated with unknown injuries and White was treated at the Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown.  Damage estimates for the hotel are in excess of 200 thousand dollars according to one fire marshal investigating the scene the cause remains undetermined.

SUNBURY KITCHEN FIRE: NO INJURIES
There were no injuries in a kitchen fire in Sunbury yesterday thanks to the volunteer firefighters who were on the scene quickly.  Fire chief Brad Wertz Jr. told local media outlets that a kitchen fire began in a half-double along Lenker Avenue before 8pm Tuesday night and crews from each of the city’s departments responded and kept the fire from spreading.  Four occupants of the home got out in time and the American Red Cross has assisted the family.

GRANT FOR LEAF COLLECTION VEHICLE AND CARD SYSTEM
The Williamsport City Council finance committee has recommended that the city use a 280 thousand dollar grant for recycling improvements.  According to the SUN gazette, city officials obtained the grant through the State Department of Environmental Protection and will be used to install a card reader system so that residents with access can use the city brush pile at 1500 West  Third street 24/7. A leaf collection vehicle will also be purchased with the remainder of the funds.

MAYOR TO SPEAK AT MLK JR. DEDICATION
Mayor Derek Slaughter will give a keynote speech during a dedication ceremony tomorrow at Lycoming College, recognizing April 24, 1958, the day Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  addressed the college community in Clarke Chapel. A plaque will be presented that was funded by a Lycoming College alumnus who heard King speak. In a press release by the college,  Mayor Slaughter said he will speak on how Dr. King’s influence and legacy still resonates in the lives of everyday citizens in Williamsport.  The ceremony begins Thursday at 7pm at Clarke Chapel on campus.

JUVENILE CHARGED WITH ASSAULT
Charges have been filed in Northumberland County Juvenile Court after an incident between students in Coal Township.  According to the Daily Item, a 14 year old student at Shamokin Middle School stabbed another student with an X-acto knife blade on January 30^th.  Police say the teen also threatened two others with the blade at the school and is charged with assault and disorderly conduct.

NO ANSWERS YET IN FATAL PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT
Media outlets continue to investigate the death of a Williamsport man who was killed while crossing West Fourth and Williams Streets in a wheelchair last autumn.  According to police reports, John Yarosz was struck and killed by an SUV last October 19^th, but police are not releasing any more information 4 months after the incident.  According to the Sun Gazette, Police chief Damon Hagan told them that the DA must make the decision to release a statement if a crime has been committed.  Law enforcement officials say the investigation is ongoing.

POLICE WANT TO STRAMLINE VEHICLE FLEET
The Williamsport city council finance committee this week has recommended that the city police purchase 3 vehicles with budget money amounting to140 thousand dollars.  According to the Sun Gazette, Police Chief Damon Hagan told council he wants to streamline the vehicles on the force from 21 down to 18.  Hagan also got an approval for a memorandum of understanding resolution between the Williamsport Area School District and the police for a school resource officer.

BOY SCOUTS OK IN WILLIAMSPORT
According to a Statement by the executive of the Susquehanna Council of the Boy Scouts, Dennis Dugan, say local scouting is not at risk. Dugan said in a press release that local councils are separate and distinct from the national organization and that scouting will remain a source of lifelong benefits to youth and local  communities for generations. JERSEY SHORE HOTEL FIRE BEING INVSETIGATED
Pennsylvania State Police are still investigating a three alarm fire in Jersey Shore at the Broadway Hotel that burned out the top two floors of the building and injured two tenants.  According to witnesses, the fire started around 10pm and firefighters rescued one man from a top floor and another found on the front steps of the hotel who was burned. WNEP reported that two other tenants were displaced and helped by the Red Cross.  Over 15 fire companies responded to the blaze.

BELLEFONTE MAN SENTENCED
A man from Bellefonte was sentenced on February 7^th in Lycoming County Court to 3 to 24months in jail, community service and restitution after breaking into a home in Mifflin township and stealing firearms.  According to North Central PA dot com, Caleb Aubrey Lazorka admitted to police that he entered a home in on Seely Run Road in September 2017 when  the owner was on vacation and took 3 guns and sold them.  Lazorka plead guilty to one third degree felony count of criminal trespass and carrying a firearm without a license.

WHITE DEER GOLF MADE MONEY LAST YEAR
Lycoming County Commissioners have reported a positive trend for the White Deer Golf Course that has finished out the year with finances in the black.  According to the Sun Gazette, operations were turned over to Billy Casper Golf  in 2016 and financially the complex has made large jumps turning over a 93 thousand dollar loss into a slight profit for 2019.  Officials said a $40 thousand infusion from the county helped begin a turning point they hope will be a trend in 2020.  County officials will still work to sell unused property at the course for future development.

SUNBURY HOSPITAL INCREASES SERVICES TO FILL GAP
Geisinger medical center has announced longer hours as well as evening and weekends to accommodate the public after closures at UPMC Susquehanna Sunbury as affect the community.  According to a press release, Geisinger Medical Center in Sunbury will open longer hours burt also will feature a virtual resource center with additional information online at Geisinger.org forward slash sunbury care. UPMC Susquehanna Sunbury is scheduled to fully close by March 31 but they have already closed the emergency room and stopped some services.

CATAWISSA BUSINESS FIRE SATURDAY
There was a serious fire in Catawissa that caused an evacuation of employees and dispatch of dozens of firefighters Saturday.  According to WNEP, a fire broke out about 6p.m. Saturday at Melick Aquafeed 139 S. First Street in Catawissa.  A passerby who k new employees there saw the flames, alerted them and then called in the blaze to 911.  A state police fire marshal is working to determine a cause today, but officials won’t go inside to investigate further due to 30 to 40 thousand pound beams hanging overhead in the structure unsecured and it’s unsafe.

MOTORIST GAVE FALSE ID, CHARGES FILED
Charges have been filed in District court against 25-year-old Kenneth Heileg of Sunbury after police say he was stopped for driving under the influence.  According to Selinsgrove State troopers, Heileg provided false identification when he was stopped and upon further investigation, police found controlled substances in his car.  Police also said Heileg showed signs of impairment during a field sobriety test.

FAYLOR LAKE INFO SESSION TONIGHT
Officials in Snyder County are hoping the public will weigh in on future work of Faylor Lake tonight at a meeting at the MACC in Beaver Springs.  According to  media reports, Faylor Lake is one the county’s top outdoor recreation spots one of three lakes built in the county in the early 1980’s.  Comissioners are hoping the public will come and look at the materials and offer suggestions, possible pursuing a Green Way and Open Space Plan in which a grant could be obtained through  DCNR.

SOIL REMDIATION PROJECT IN CHERRY TOWNSHIP
Motorists who travel Route 220 in Cherry Township, Sullivan County, are advised of a lane restriction due to a soil remediation project that will take place on Tuesday, February 18. According to PennDOT, traffic will be restricted to a single lane under daylight flagging, while the contractor works on the southbound side of Route 220, approximately one mile north of Dushore, in Cherry Township, Sullivan County.  The work is expected to take place on Tuesday, February 18, between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

Bucknell basketball star Mike Muscala had his college jersey retired Saturday night at halftime of Bucknell‘s game against American. According to the Sun Gazette, Muscala now with the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder, is just the third men’s player to have his jersey retired. Number 33 now hangs in Sojka Pavilion.
