CITY CARJACKING SUSPECT ARRESTED IN CARBON COUNTY

The man seen on surveillance cameras carjacking a victim in Williamsport Sunday afternoon was arrested for another carjacking Monday September 23rd.  According to the Sun Gazette, 27 year old Tiler Martin Wood, a homeless man formerly of Muncy, was identified and charged with numerous felonies in Lycoming County Sunday, but was then taken into custody by state troopers in Carbon County Monday for another robbery of a motor vehicle.  Wood has been incarcerated there in lieu of 100 thousand dollars bail and was arraigned for the Williamsport carjacking via video.  An additional 150 thousand dollars bail was added.  Wood had been on parole since August for a simple assault charge from 2023.

SECOND ACCIDENT IN TWO WEEKS INVOLVING A CITY BUS

A second instance where a motorist ran a stop sign in downtown Williamsport and hit a River Valley Transit bus happened Thursday and police report an injury.  According to the Sun Gazette, one woman passenger was injured at about 1:50pm when a Jeep collided with the bus at Park Avenue and Rose Street.  She was transported to UPMC Williamsport.  The Jeep was heading south on Rose street when the accident occurred.  No word if any charges were filed in the incident.

TRUMP TO RALLY IN BUTLER, PA AGAIN

The Trump-Vance campaign will be in Butler, PA for a rally next week in the same place where a would-be assassin tried to strike the former president in July.  According to the Daily Item, the Republican presidential nominee will visit the Butler Farm Show grounds October 5^th which will include a tribute for the man who lost his life in the prior shooting, 50 year old Corey Comperatore, a former Butler Township fire chief.  Two others were injured that day, but have since recovered from their injuries.

ART AND ESSAY COMPETITION FOR SENIORS IN LYCOMING COUNTY

High school seniors from Lycoming County are invited to submit photographs, mixed media, digital art, essays, poetry or other entries for The League of Women Voters of Lycoming County art and writing competition titled “The Power of Every Vote”.  The League of women voters encourages informed and active participation through research and advocacy of government, taking positions on governmental, social, and environmental issues.  The deadline for submissions is October 29^th and the two top entries will win a $400 prize.  Get details online at palwv.org.

PENN COLLEGE STUDENT ARRESTED FOR CHECK SCAM

A 19 year old man from Penn College was taken into custody after an investigation showed him involved in a check cashing scam and forcibly involving a classmate.  According to North Central PA dot com, Kahsan Tahir Youk of Spring City advertised a fraudulent money making opportunity that a classmate responded to and eventually tried to back out of when he realized the scam.  The victim did relent bank information after receiving threats over the matter, but the transactions beginning September 16^th were flagged by M&T Bank.  Youk is being charged with robbery, kidnapping, terroristic threats, harassment and more. He is being held at the Lycoming County Prison on $50,000 monetary bail with an upcoming preliminary hearing.

MAN JAILED AFTER REFUSING TO TALK TO POLICE, JUDGE

A Williamsport man stopped by police for an expired license plate and window tint on September 12^th, is in custody after refusing to answer questions or cooperate with officers when they found his suspended license and car’s obliterated VIN number on his 2017 Cadillac XTS.  According to the Sun Gazette, 62 year old George Henry Whaley, Jr. refused to identify himself or allow himself to be fingerprinted at the state police barracks.  Whaley, facing misdemeanor obstruction, a felony altering a VIN, plus two summary violations, also refused to answer questions during his arraignment in front of Judge Denise Dieter.  He was sent to county lock-up on no bail.

PENNDOT WORK CONTINUES MONDAY

Work continues in two spots in Lycoming County next week.  According to PennDOT, embankment and shoulder repairs will continue again Monday at various locations on Route 287 in Pine and Cummings townships.  In addition, reconstruction and bridge replacement will continues again starting Monday on Lycoming Mall Drive and Fairfield Road in Fairfield Township working on the new structure over Bennett’s Run.  Watch for periodic flagging and single lane conditions as work is being performed.

ALZHEIMER’S WALK IN MONTOURSVILLE SATURDAY

Indian Park in Montoursville will be host of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s event this Saturday.  According to the Alzheimer’s Association, they invite all Lycoming County residents to join the fight against Alzheimer’s disease by participating in the walk.  Go online to act.alz.org to join a team or get information for tomorrow’s walk that starts at 10am with a ceremony to honor those lost to Alzheimer’s with the walk beginning at 10:30.   Nearly 7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and it is a leading cause of death in the United States.

WILLIAMSPORT STUDENT FOUND WITH GUN IN BACKPACK

A student at Williamsport area high school was taken into custody Wednesday by state police after school officials conducted a drug search based on reasonable suspicion and discovered a handgun in the student’s backpack.  According to an email from superintendent, Dr. Timothy S. Bowers, there were never any threats made to students or staff, and the student did not display the weapon.  Bowers said there will be increased police presence at the school for the next several days, and that the student will face the most aggressive disciplinary actions allowed by the Pennsylvania School Code and applicable laws. 

POLICE SEEK HUGHESVILLE GUN THIEF

State police are seeking information about a burglary at a Hughesville gun shop last weekend.  According to the Sun Gazette, a theft occurred early Saturday September 21^st at the Blued Barrel Gun Shop on Railroad Street.  Police say person of interest may have inquired about several of the guns that were taken in the incident a few days before the burglary.  Call Montoursville state police if you have information 570-368-5700 or the toll-free tips line 1-800-4PA TIPS.

PAJAMA FACTORY FACING CODES VIOLATIONS

Tenants at the Pajama Factory 1307 Park Avenue in Williamsport could face an order to vacate after a July report from the City of Williamsport Bureau of Codes that assessed violations at the building that constitute an unsafe space.  According to North Central PA dot com, Williamsport Bureau of Fire Chief Sam Aungst said they have met with the owner of the Pajama Factory Mark Winkelman addressing concerns about the building in the past, but recent concerns are at the forefront now.  Winkleman says the buildings are safer now than they have been in the past with automatic fire protection in the building.   The matter will go before the city Board of Appeals at a hearing scheduled for Tuesday, October 1.

SUICIDE PREVENTION AWARENESS VIGIL RESCHEDULED

September isNational Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and UPMC announced that their candlelight vigil this week will now be tonight after inclement weather yesterday. SEWER REPAIRS IN SNYDER COUNTY COMPLETE

Repairs were completed on the broken sewer line at the Eastern Snyder County Authority treatment plant in Penn Township yesterday afternoon.  According to the Daily Item, a break in a 20 inch pipe at the treatment facility near Selinsgrove Sunday caused a spill of raw sewage into the Susquehanna River, which authorities quickly attempted to contain but still advised residents to avoid contact with the water 20 miles down stream from Middle Creek.  The drinking water supply was not affected.  The new pipe replaced a 50 year old one that had sustained a 2-inch break at about 6am Sunday morning when the alarm sounded at the Isle of Que alerting officials to the emergency.

MAN JAILED FOR FIGHTING WITH MINOR

A 39 year old man from Williamsport who tried to get a juvenile to fight him at the 800 block of Wilson Street on September 17^th was jailed on assault charges and more.  According to the Sun Gazette, police say Jonathan Pace threatened the juvenile and family members, and was seen throwing rocks at their home.  Pace was charged with simple assault, loitering, corrupting the morals of a minor and more.  He was arraigned and released on 20 thousand dollars bail.

MAN FOUND GUILTY OF TWO ARMED ROBBERIES

After a two day trial in Williamsport this week, a Lycoming County man was found guilty for two armed robberies committed in November of 2020.  According to the Sun Gazette, court records say 36 year old Jesse Derick Giddings robbed the Boost Mobile at 620 Hepburn St with a black and silver handgun threatening the female manager and taking money from the register along with 14 new iPhones worth over 7 thousand dollars.  Giddings was also charged for thefts of cash and merchandise at the West Fourth Street Family Dollar in the city.  The man also allegedly threatened that female clerk with the same gun.  He was implicated as a suspect in the robberies after family and friends of his sold the stolen iPhones with serial numbers matching the stolen phones at kiosks at Wal-Mart and the former Lycoming Mall as well as the proximity to the thefts as reported by his ankle monitor from being on parole at the time of the thefts.  

ANTI CAMPUS HAZING ACT PASSES IN SENATE

Federal legislation has passed in the U.S. House of Representatives this week as a result of the work done by a family who lost their son in an on-campus hazing incident at Penn State University in February of 2017.  According to North Central PA dot com, the parents of the victim, Timothy Piazza, inspired the bipartisan legislation – the “Stop Campus Hazing Act” – and began the Timothy J. Piazza Center for Fraternity and Sorority Research and Reform at Penn State.  The Stop Campus Hazing Act now heads to the US Senate.  Tim Piazza would have turned 27 on September 25.

*Kramer revealed his diagnosis in a social media post on Wednesday soon after Brett Favre announced he has Parkinson’s disease

*A standout at Rice University, Kramer was drafted in the first round of the 1977 NFL draft by the Vikings, set to be the heir to Fran Tarkenton. His best season came in 1986 when he threw for 3,000 yards and 24 touchdowns.
