Little League CEO and President Stephen D Keener announced yesterday that Little League International has made the difficult and disappointing decision to cancel the 2020 Little League World Series.  He also said that the expected travel restrictions for international players and families will be complicated to manage and restricts many from coming to the U.S. to play .  This year was to be the 75th Little League Baseball World Series, that celebration will now take place in 2022. The 2020 MLB Little League Classic originally scheduled for August 23 has also been canceled, but the Major League Baseball Players Association have committed to playing in 2021. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health there are 1, 397 new cases of COVID-19 in the commonwealth as of yesterday at midnight, bringing to the statewide total to 45,763 in all 67 counties.  98 new deaths were reported as well totalling 2,292 fatalities in Pennsylvania.  Lycoming County has 7 more positive cases reported getting up to 68 cases and no deaths.  Northumberland adds one case getting to 93, Union has 33,  Montour 47.  Columbia County checks in with 283 postive cases and 13 deaths.  Tioga County has 16 cases today with 1 death reported.

According to the National Weather Service, there is a flood watch in effect until 2pm today after up to 3 inches of rain fell yesterday through the Williamsport area According to the Sun Gazette, meteorologists say the West Branch Susquehanna River was at 7.73 feet at 7pm last night and that below 10 feet is normal with flooding at 20 feet.  14.9 feet is forecasted today.  The rainfall total for April was 5.7 inches 2.33 inches more than average.

The public is invited to get up to 2 gallons of free milk – drive thru style – in Shamokin dam next Monday from 2-4pm.  According to the Sun Gazette, Dairy Farmers of America and the Greater Susquehanna United Way will provide over 4,000 gallons of free milk at the “Pop Your Trunk” event at the former K-mart Parking lot in Shamokin Dam.  The United Way will also be handing out fabric masks, anyone arriving before 1:45 will be asked to leave and return.

An audit into how Governor Tom Wolf and the state Department of Community and Economic Development managed the waiver process for businesses that appealed to the recent COVID-19 shutdown order was announced by Pennsylvania Auditor General Eugene DePasquale Thursday.   He will launch an audit into how the state Department of Community and Economic Development has managed the waiver process for businesses that appealed Gov. Tom Wolf’s COVID-19 shutdown order.  According to Penn Live, DePasquale said some business owners thought the waiver process was too slow and not transparent enough.  Businesses that were not life sustaining were closed March 19th and more than 40,000 businesses sought a waiver during the application period that ended April 3.

Traffic was detoured for more than 7 hours along Route 45 in Union County yesterday around 11am  according to Penn Dot after wires and a utility pole came down on the roadway.  The lane closures of Route 45 in Hartley Township was west of Bear Run Road.  Penn Dot announced the road reopened around 6:45pm.

The 2020 Laurel Festival in Wellsboro, PA has been cancelled.  All Laurel Festival activities scheduled for the Tioga County tradition, including the 2020 Family Day and Children’s Health Fair scheduled for June 13th on the Green in Wellsboro has been cancelled due to concerns over the coronavirus.  According to Julie VanNess of the Wellsboro Area Chamber of Commerce all Laurel Queen candidates and their schools have been notified of the decision to cancel all the Laurel Festival activities in 2020.

NFL

The NFL is looking into playing games on Saturday if college football season is delayed this year. According to NFL officials and their broadcast partners, most games would be played Sunday, but if there was no college football at all on a Saturday, it could be an option.

Wil Ferrell crashed the Seattle Seahawks virtual meeting held by head coach Pete Carroll Thursday pretending to be new teammate Greg Olsen the foremer Carolina Panther who signed a 1-year deal with the team February 18th.  Will Ferrell Attended USC and is an acquaintance of the coach

MLB
The Tampa Bay Rays are the first MLB team to furlough employees.  A number of full timers will be furloughed starting tomorrow – reported to be only half of the up to 500 employees on the payroll.

NBA
The NBA is in talks with Disney World about resuming play there – since they have enough room to house quarantined players there – Las Vegas is also a location option

FOOD SUPPLY CONCERNS ADDRESSED BY GOVERNOR
Governor Wolf yesterday addressed food production efforts during his daily press conference, reassuring Pennsylvanians that food production is a top priority and life sustaining business.  Governor Wolf said the state department of agriculture has asked the federal government and PEMA for food production funding through the Federal Families First Act with an additional 16 million is coming through the Federal Cares Act. SECRETARY OF AGRICULTURE THANKS GOVERNOR FOR MAKING FOOD SUPPLY PRIORITY
Russel Redding was included during the daily video conference with Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf yesterday, addressing the food insecurities many Pennsylvanians now face due to the coronavirus.  Redding says that many people never expected to see themselves needing this kind of help and wants to provide the community with resources.  He also thanked Governor Wolf for keeping food production as a top priority. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH UPDATE
The Pennsylvania Department of Health  confirmed yesterday that there are 1,102 additional positive cases of COVID-19, bringing the statewide total to 44,366.  There are 2,195 total confirmed deaths in the state adding 479 new deaths as of yesterday.  Lycoming County has gone up 3 to 61 positive cases, Northumberland has 92, Clinton has 30, Montour County has 47, Sullivan one, and Tioga County reports 14 cases and one confirmed death,

JERSEY SHORE GIVES ELEMENTARY PARENTS CHOICES
Jersey Shore School District  voted Monday to allow parents of students in the elementary grades to either stay in the school they were in during the current school year or to return to their home school for the 2020-21 school year. According to the Sun Gazette, Dr. Ken Dady, assistant superintendent said the school choice policy was instituted by the district several years ago, but no guidelines were ever put in place to establish such things as class sizes at the elementary buildings. The district recently decided that elementary schools at Avis and Salladasburg would not be closed.

PLAYHOUSE SHIFTS SHOWS TO NEXT YEAR
Three musicals planned by the Millbrook Playhouse for the summer as well as four summer stock Downstairs Cabaret productions for 2020 have been all shifted to the 2021 season due to the concern and safety of the theater-going community during the coronavirus pandemic.  According to the Sun Gazette, artistic director David Leidholdt said  a one man show called “Grand Legends” is still booked for August 27 to August 30th and a summer and fall children’s musical and adult fall show will be announced during the upcoming “Fall in Mill Hall” event.  Millbrook has tickets available for September and October shows with details at ,illbrokk playhouse .org

MASKING WILL CONTINUE EVEN WHEN THE STATE IS AT YELLOW
During the daily Department of Health Press briefing yesterday, in a forwarded question they addressed community members not wearing masks as is mandated by the state department of health and that it is a concern for state officials.  Press Secretary of the Department says it is a concern and that some Pennsylvanians are being dishonest saying they have a medical condition to not wear the masks when it is often not the case.  As Lycoming county may be included in the north-central region that can transition from red to yellow in the Wolf administration’s reopening plan for the state, Secretary of Health Dr Rachel Levine says wearing masks will still be required in this time of transitional caution expected after May 8th.

ROTARY CLUB DONATES TO COVID-19 NON-PROFITS
The Milton Rotary Club has donated a total of $1400 to seven organizations helping people with the coronavirus. The funds came from the overage after the inability to hold the clubs luncheon happened due to Covid-19. The beneficiaries of the money were the Evangelical Community Hospital, Hand-Up foundation, Ronald McDonald house, Milton Panther Pantry, Greater Susquehanna YMCA, The Salvation Army of Milton and Panther Packs.

BUCKNELL KEEPS TUITION AS IS
An announced tuition increase has been cancelled at Bucknell University to help relieve students during challenging times according to President John Bravman in an announcement Sunday.  According to PennLive, tuition will remain unchanged for the 2020-21 academic year because they are committed to helping students complete their education.The roll back does not apply to room and board fees, which will remain at their announced levels, he said.

NFL
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and other league employees will take pay cuts or furloughs throughout the coronavirus pandemic.  Goodell voluntarily reducedhis o salary from over 30 million a year to zero yesterday. The league is also implementing reductions in base salaries for workers, vice presidents,  and directors.

Ex-Jaguars linebacker Telvin Smith has been charged with unlawful sexual activity with minor.  A law enforcement source told ESPN that Smith is accused of being involved with a 17-year-old girl last August and September.

HS Wrestling
According to the Sun Gazette, the PIAA Wrestling Steering Committee approved a recommendation Wednesday to reduce the number of weight classes from 14 to 13. The decision won’t be made until May 20th when the board of directors meet, but wrestling chairmen David Campbell expects it to pass.

The NCAA is closer to allowing college athletes to make money from endorsements. The Board of Governors yesterday approved recommendations that will allow athletes to earn income through social media and endorsements that will go into effect for the 2122 academic year,
TENNIS
Tennis legends Serena Williams will join Maria Sharapova playing video game tennis for charity. Sunday’s event will feature top tennis players teamed with celebrities playing the “Stay at Home Slam”. The competitors will each play in their homes for $25,000 that they can donate to the charity of their choice, but the winning team will receive an additional $1 million to donate.
MLB
Major league baseball says that Derek Jeter’s induction ceremony into the baseball Hall of Fame will wait until 2021 since the class ceremony inductees from 2020 will be combined in 2021 next year. The event was scheduled for July 26 but next year will be on July 25th.

Minor league baseball has issued a statement in conjunction with Major Legue Baseball  that there is no truth to the rumor that minor-league baseball season has been canceled. No official decision has been made as to when Minor League teams will begin their 2020 season.

LYCOMING COUNTY REPORTS ONE MORE COVID-19 CASE
There is one more positive case of COVID-19 reported in Lycoming County as of Tuesday 58 cases and no deaths, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.  Statewide, there are 1,214 additional positive cases of COVID-19, bringing that total to 43,264.  119 new deaths in the commonwealth makes 1, 716 confirmed fatalities due to the coronavirus.  Local case counts include Northumberland with 92, Union has 33 Montour has 47 – with no deaths in those counties, Columbia has 279 cases and reports 8 deaths.

GOVERNOR TO REVEAL FRIDAY THE COUNTIES CHANGING DESIGNATION
Gov. Tom Wolf will announce this Friday who will officially feel the relaxing of the coronavirus-related shutdown directives first.  Some regions or counties may move from a “red” designation to a “yellow” designation, taking effect the following Friday, May 8. Under yellow, a ban on gatherings of over 25 people will remain, and gyms, casinos, theaters and other indoor recreational, wellness and entertainment venues will stay closed. Restaurants and bars will still be limited to carry-out or delivery, and businesses must follow federal and state guidance for social distancing and cleaning.

WEST FOURTH STREET CONSTRUCTION TO START FRIDAY
Construction work is set to begin on West Fourth Street in the Newberry section of the City of Williamsport,  On Friday, May 1, the contractor, will begin installing base repairs in preparation for milling and paving of a fiber reinforcement layer as well as a new wearing course on West Fourth Street between Arch Street and Oliver Avenue.  Motorist should expect single lane closures using daylight flagging.

COURTS WILL REMAIN CLOSED INTO MAY
The Lycoming County Court of Common Pleas and all Magisterial District Courts of the 29th Judicial District have announced that they will remain closed to the public through May 15, 2020, except for essential functions. The latest Lycoming County Administrative Order Monday, extends the court closure until May 15th.    This also confirms that jury selection in Lycoming County scheduled for June 1st -5th is cancelled with all jury trials scheduled for June through July being continued. CROSSCUTTERS TO HELP CENTRAL PA FOOD BANK
The Williamsport Crosscutters have joined a new initiative with “MiLB CommUNITY First” in conjunction with Feeding America to raise funds in response to  COVID-19 and honor those working on the front line of the pandemic.  According to the Sun Gazette, if fans visit the online site, www.milb.com/communityfirst they can choose a donation amount and designate it for the Crosscutters.  Those direct funds will benefit the Central PA Food Bank and for every $10 donated, the Cutters will donate a ticket for a future home game in this season or 2021 to a local hearo during the pandemic.

MAYOR SLAUGHTER ANTICIPATES WILLIAMSPORT BE AMONG THE FIRST TO REOPEN
Williamsport may be in the first of the locations the state Health Department classifies to reopen since shelter in place orders went into effect March 15th.  According to the Sun Gazette, Mayor Derek Slaughter said to the City’s finance committee that as he monitors the health information from the state and works with local and state health officials, if the city is authorized to move forward, we will hopefully become a model for other cities in the commonwealth who open back up in a measured way.

PENN STATE WILL DECIDE ABOUT FALL SEMESTER IN JUNE
Penn State University is giving themselves until June 15th to decide on their plans for the fall semester, trying to determine whether students will be returning to campus or continue remote learning, like the summer class schedule is at this time.  According to WPSU, Provost Nick Jones said in  Tuesday’s remote Faculty Senate meeting they are trying to juggle the need to inform their students of future plans, making sure to use the most up-to-date information about COVID-19.  All outcomes and decisions are based on student enrollment and some out of state and international students may take other options if students cannot return to the Centre County campus in the fall.


MLB

Major league baseball is planning to start the season in late June. Sources at MLB say they’ll start no later than July 2, playing at least 100 regular season games.  They are also considering a three division 10-team plan in which teams play only within their division based on geography.

Major league baseball is now allowing teams to offer refunds to fans for games currently not being played because of the coronavirus.  Each team sets its own policy with many likely offering credit for 2021 as an option.

In NASCAR the Governor of North Carolina says the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway will likely go on a scheduled May 24.  Gov. Roy Cooper says NASCAR and the officials at the speedway submitted a plan to implement social distancing and have no fans in the speedway for the race.

HS Wrestling
Some minor rule changes in high school wrestling were handed down by the National Federation of High Schools yesterday which addressed hair length, weigh-in procedures and scoring, but not the pilot program announced last year by the PIAA reducing the number of weight classes from 14 to 12.

GOVERNOR WOLF LIFTS SOME RESTRICTIONS ON OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
Governor Wolf has lifted restrictions as of May 1st  for golf courses, marinas and guided fishing, and private campgrounds , as long as they follow COVID-19 guidelines to operate safely.  He says state parks will remain closed until mid-May.  In other Wolf administration business, a proposal to force the opening of lawn and garden retail stores passed in the House with unanimous Republican support and a bill was approved by the Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee to allow pet groomers to operate. Both actions will require the governor’s signature.

DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH REPORT
The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 885 new cases of the virus with 42,050 positive tests reported in Pennsylvania.  There are 1, 597 total deaths in the commonwealth.  Lycoming County has 57 cases, Northumberland County 90 cases, Montour 48, Clinton county has 25, Union 31, and Sullivan, 1 case – with no deaths reported in those counties. However, there are 277 positive cases in Montour County with 7 deaths reported, in Bradford County where there have been 28 cases, there are 2 deaths and Tioga County reports 14 cases and 1 patient dying from COVID-19

MURDER FOR HIRE SCHEME FOILED
Two Lycoming County teens have been charged with criminal solicitation after planning what police are calling a murder-for-hire scheme.  According to Penn Live, 19 year old Dillian Mikel Weaver, of Williamsport, and 16 year oldAngelina Grace Peluso, 16, of Trout Run have been accused of wanting to kill Peluso’s stepfather, Howard Blackburn, after he caught them in bed together.  Police say after Paluso allegedly lied to Weaver saying that Blackburn sexually assaulted her in their Cascade Township home, Weaver and Paluso allegedly went through steps to plan a way for someone to kill Blackburn, resulting in an undercover trooper arresting Weaver Thursday night.  Investigators later said Peluso told police that it was Weavers idea to kill her stepfather – and she went along with it.  Both were charged Friday with bail set at $1 million each.

LARGE GRADUATION GATHERINGS CANCELLED BY THE GOVERNOR
Gov. Tom Wolf released a statement of hope to the High School Classes of 2020, offering his apologies for the drastic change to their lives, announcing that it will not be possible for any class to celebrate with large celebrations this year.  he said in a prepared statement that many may feel angry about the circumstances and he understands that they’ve been dealt a bad hand… <<< Wolf Grads>>>Governor Wolf’s reopening plan bans large gatherings even in regions where restrictions are being eased May 8th and he offers his Congratulations to the class of 2020 across the state.

ELECTIVE SURGERY CAN RESUME
The Pennsylvania Department of Health has announced that elective surgical procedures at hospitals and outpatient centers may resume.  According to Dr Rachel Levine these procedures can take place now under the guidance and recommendation of the American Hospital Association, College of Surgeons and other hospital entities.  According to the Sun Gazette, the cancellation of elective surgeries, where a hospital makes most of its’ income, cause the industry to lose about $1 billion in revenue in March.  The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 885 new cases of the virus with 42,050 positive tests reported in Pennsylvania.  There are 1, 597 total deaths in the commonwealth.

HOSPITAL ASKING COVID-19 PATIENTS WHO TEST NEGATIVE TO DONATE PLASMA
Geisinger Medical Center said in a news release yesterday that they are partnering with Miller-Keystone Blood Center so that those who have recovered from COVID-19 can donate plasma that contains antibodies that may help patients still fighting the virus symptoms.  According to the system director of Geisinger’s transfusion services, the results are encouraging and that they are contacting patients who are eligible to voluntarily donate blood and plasma in a process that takes about 45 minutes.  People who have been  diagnosed with COVID-19 and have been symptom free for 28 days are eligible to donate.  The release said that Geisinger is working to develop its own reliable antibody testing technology.

POP UP RECYCLING IN JERSEY SHORE AND MUNCY
Recycling will take place for Jersey Shore and Muncy Township next with Lycoming Resource Management Services announced two new locations yesterday for deposal of recycling materials this Thursday through Saturday from 8-4.  Staff will direct traffic this week at the Lycoming Mall Parking lot at 300 Lycoming Mall Circle in Muncy Township and Jersey Shire Area High School Parking lot at 701 Cemetery St in Jersey Shore.

PENNDOT WORKING ON ROUTE15 WEDNESDAY
PennDOT says they will be working tomorrow along Route 15 south in Lewis Township to restore the soil and shoulder after a tractor trailer accident around mile marker 148  last weekend.  Motorists are advised that a contractor will be blocking the left lane about a quarter of a mile before Trout Run Exit Wednesday, April 29 between 8 and 5, weather permitting.

NBA
The Los Angeles Lakers returned a $4.6 million loan from the government meant for small businesses.  The Lakers said when they found out the funds from the Payroll Protection Program had been depleted they wanted to give financial support back to those most in need.

The NBA has pushed back its plan to allow players to re-enter team facilities this Friday May 1st.  According to officials with the Hawks they are now waiting to see how loosening the stay-at home orders in Georgia impact their  region. The facilities may open now May 8th.

The NFL has designed several versions of the 2020 season, some which include a Super Bowl February 28 with a season starting as late as October 15, plus a season without bye weeks or a pro bowl. The NFL usually begins its regular season following Labor Day

NASCAR
Matt Kenseth is coming out of retirement to race for Chip Ganassi in the #42 car for the rest of the 2020 season.  Kenseth last competed in 2018, running a partial schedule for Roush Fenway. His last full-time season was 2017 for Joe Gibbs.

NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin finished last in Sunday’s virtual race last week when his seven-year-old daughter turned off the monitor with a remote control causing him to crash. Hamlin posted a video on Twitter saying his daughter admitted she had the remote and ended the day. eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational series has replace real life NASCAR while it remain suspended due to the coronavirus.

BACKYARD BROADCASTING LOCAL NEWS APRIL 27, 2020

The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported Sunday at noon that 1,116 additional cases of COVID-19 were reported in the Commonwealth bringing the statewide total to 41, 165.  There have been 1, 550 deaths due to the coronavirus. The department continues to mandate Pennsylvania residents to wear cloth masks and most stores will require the use of a mask to enter .  Governor Wolf said that construction that was previously deemed non-essential can begin on May 1, even though the phased plan to start lifting the statewide stay at home order on a county-by-county basis won’t begin until at least May 8.

Police are investigating a drive-by shooting that occurred Saturday night in the area of Pine Street at 7th Street in Williamsport  around 5pm which sent one male victim to the hospital.  According to the Williamsport Bureau of Police, the Criminal investigation unit is following various leads and the name of the 21 year old victim has not been released.  According to the Sun Gazette, witnesses said shots were fired over the heads of kids waiting to cross the street and that the suspect allegedly fled along Louisa Street in a jeep.  If you have information about the shooting please call Agent Brittany Alexander at 570-327-7586..

The PA Liquor Control Board is planning to expand curbside pickup at liquor stores to 389 more Fine Wine & Good Spirits locations across the commonwealth today Most stores will support curbside service Monday through Saturday – taking a limited number of orders on a first-call, first-served basis beginning at 9a each day and scheduling pickup appointments between 9a and 6p. At pickup, customers will be required to present identification before the order is delivered with a limit of up to six bottles per order, and credit cards are the only accepted form of payment. Orders will also be limited to one order per caller, per store, per day, and all curbside pickup sales are final. The Williamsport Soap Box Derby the Steering Committee is didappointed to announced that they have canceled  the 2020 local race scheduled for Saturday, June 13, 2020.  According to their social media pages,  , the timing of the race falls within the guidelines limiting the size and number of people to attend any event in our area due to COVID 19. These guidelines will be changing at some point, but more than likely not soon enough to allow the soap box derby to take place.  If you have a child registered for this year’s race, you are automatically guaranteed a place in the 2021 event. And officials will be in touch with you to confirm.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health,  Lycoming County now reports 55 cases of COVID-19, but no deaths have remained official after clarification last week of two people who died from the virus did not live in the county.  According to the CDC, records they receive of people who die from the coronavirus count in the county where they lived, not where they passed away.  Sunday the state reported 1,550 deaths across Pennsylvania.  Out of our total deaths, 952 have occurred in residents from nursing or personal care facilities.

A young woman from Oakmont, Pennsylvania  near Pittsburgh , died Sunday after a crash along i-80 East involving her 2010 Kia Rio and a 2018 Freightliner Truck.  Pennsylvania State police at Milton report that around 2pm yesterday the vehicle 28 year old Brianna M Kimmel was driving began to spin out of control for an unknown reason near mile marker 200 and left the roadway striking the berm –she re-entered the interstate, making contact with 36 year old Adam Brown’s truck.  Both vehicles went off the roadway and the accident closed I-80 east until after 7pm.  Kimmel was pronounced dead at the scene.  Brown was not injured.

 

A 29 year old suspect has been arrested following a  hit and run accident that occurred in Union County last Tuesday.  Police were seeking the driver of a white Ford Explorer with front end damage after they said 23 year old Abigail Martin and an11 month old girl in a carrier were struck while riding a bike along Red Ridge Road in Limestone Township.  State police in Milton say Tyler Bean-Dowell of Mifflinburg, who drives a 2006 Ford Explorer,  was responsible for the crash and arraigned in district court.  Bean-Dowell is in the Union County Jail in lieu of $100,000 straight bail.

Out of an abundance of caution and to keep in line with COVID-19 social distancing guidance, the Lycoming County Veterans Council and the Lycoming County Veterans Memorial Park Commission have decided to cancel the annual Memorial Day ceremony originally scheduled for May 23 at Lycoming County Veterans Memorial Park.

The Williamsport Soap Box Derby the Steering Committee is didappointed to announced that they have canceled  the 2020 local race scheduled for Saturday, June 13, 2020.  According to their social media pages,  , the timing of the race falls within the guidelines limiting the size and number of people to attend any event in our area due to COVID 19. These guidelines will be changing at some point, but more than likely not soon enough to allow the soap box derby to take place.  If you have a child registered for this year’s race, you are automatically guaranteed a place in the 2021 event. And officials will be in touch with you to confirm.

The NBA is allowing some team practice facilities to reopen Friday as some states relax stay-at-home orders during the coronavirus outbreak.  No group workouts or team activities can occur.  Players can practice this week in Georgia, but where states still have stay-at-home orders, alternative arrangements are being made.

After 3 months since the death of Kobe Bryant, the largest collection of Kobe Bryant memorabilia is to be auctioned off soon . On the block are his game worn sneakers and his championship ring originally belonging to his mother, Pam Bryant, with nearly 100 more items included.  Bidding will be hosted online and ends May 16th.

NEW DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH COVID-19 NUMBERS

The Pennsylvania Department of Health confirmed Friday that there are 1,599 additional positive cases of COVID-19, bringing the statewide total to 38,652.  The state reported Lycoming County with 48 positive cases, and no deaths here.  Today, the state is reporting 1,492 confirmed deaths in Pennsylvania. The two deaths previously reported in Lycoming County were removed meaning no deaths were reported in the county.

ANOTHER CRISIS LOAN OPPORTUNITY

CURBSIDE LIQUOR PICKUP EXPANDS TO MOST STORES
The PA Liquor Control Board is planning to expand curbside pickup at liquor stores to all loactions in the state on Monday. Governor Wolf announced a modified opening of a few local fine Wine and Good Spirit stores earlier this week in Lycoming County  to  assist with online ordering that was overwhelming the states system . Customers are limited to one order per day and only a certain amount of orders will be taken from 9am to 1pm, with a 6 bottle limit. PENNSYLVANIA PLANNING A CAUTIOUS REOPENING MAY 8
Governor wolf has announced on Wednesday that may 8th will be the target for the the beginning of the reopening of business’.  PA DOH will be classifying counties with a color coded document indicating how serious COVID-19 is in the region. Red being the most serious, yellow being in the middle and green being well off. All construction business in the commonwealth will resume limited operations beginning may 1st.

Several groups were disappointed to announce the cancellation of their events this summer due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Colonel Robert Evanchick of the Pennsylvania State Police cancelled the 2020 the Camp Cadet season, a 27 week camp staffed by police officer volunteers, Penn State and Special Olympics officials canceled the Summer Games, as well as the popular Torch Run. The much loved Turbotville Community carnival and pet parade scheduled to be June first through 6th is also rescheduled for 2021.

DEATH COUNT IN LYCOMING COUNTY CHANGES
Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine explained why the death count in Pennsylvania decreased yesterday and also how collecting data on probable and confirmed cases can change the COVID-19 numbers, like it did yesterday in Lycoming County, from two to zero deaths. According to Dr Levine, out of the 37, 053 total cases of COVID-19 in the state 388 are now considered probable. According to the Sun Gazette, Lycoming County Coroner, Charles E Kiessling Jr. remains concerned about how the numbers are being recorded in such unprecedented times.  The total number of deaths decreased to 1,421 from 1,622 due to the change in the count of probable cases, but there were still 69 death cases reported confirmed by positive tests for COVID-19.

A THIRD BUSINESS PORTAL CREATED TO CONNECT BUSINESSES TO COVID-19 SUPPLIES

URGENT CARE FACILITY TO OFFER COVID-19 TESTING
If residents meet CDC-based COVID-19 screening criteria, a local urgent care will provide testing in Lycoming County.  According to a press release, Med Express Urgent Care will screen patients at designated locations – from their cars if necessary. MedExpress centers are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. Officials ask that you call a local center to determine next steps if the CDC criteria applied to you, you can review those details online at medexpress.com/covid19tests

SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGN FOR THE HELPERS IN WILLIAMSPORT
“Help the Helpers,” a joint initiative of UPMC, City of Williamsport, Lycoming County United Way, and Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce encourages the community to recognize and look for ways to support “the helpers” and each other, such as running simples errands or providing helpful supplies to our neighbors, health care workers,  first responders grocery clerks, custodians and other essential workers you know.  Community members are asked to show their signs of support with window signs, social media frames, or share their “help the helpers” stories with the hashtag #HELPTHEHELPERS. GIRL FLEES ABDUCTION ATTEMPT
State police in Montoursville say a juvenile girl was approached earlier this month in an abduction attempt in Woodward Township.  According to the Sun Gazette, a suspect in a red Subaru sedan came to the Harvest Moon Park trailer court on April 10thj around 7pm and offered a young girl candy to come with them.  Police say the girl did not get in the vehicle and instead fled the sceen and called police.  If you have any information about this incident, please call Pennsylvania State police  at 570-368-5700.

PENN STATE TO FREEZE TUITION
Due to the economic challenges facing Pennsylvania and the nation, Penn State administrators said yesterday they will freeze tuition rates for all students University-wide for the 2020-21 academic year. The plan will need the University’s Board of Trustees final approval in July.  This is the third consecutive year that Penn State has held tuition rates flat for Pennsylvania resident students. The school will also adjust tuition rates for the upcoming summer 2020 semester, using a pre-existing tuition structure and also subject to Board of Trustees approval at is regularly scheduled May meeting.

LOCAL GROCERY TO START FOOD DRIVE CAMPAIGN
Weis Markets is working with their local communities starting next week and will launch their Fight Hunger campaign on April 30th.  Each Weis store will partner with a local food pantry, and when customers generously donate or round up their grocery order, the proceeds will go to those local recipients.  Weis customers can also place a anon-perishable food donation in barrels provided by the stores starting next Thursday.

COLOR CODED REOPENING FOR THE COMMONEWEALTH
Governor Tom Wolf last night addressed Pennsylvanians with more details and guidelines about reopening the state on a region by region basis with north central and northwestern segments first to be considered.  A color coded red-yellow-green phase system has been implemented with the commonwealth currently at red meaning all residents will follow stay-at-home orders and only essential business operates. Wolf says the yellow and green phases will come as we hit certain benchmarks.  A primary benchmark is that a county must average fewer than 50 new positive cases of the virus per 100,000 residents for 14 days.  Wolf says if there are flare ups of COVID-19 cases, it’s possible to shut down back to the red phase again if necessary.

DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH COVID-19 NUMBERS
The Pennsylvania Department of Health confirmed yesterday that there are 1,156 additional positive cases of COVID-19, bringing the statewide total to 35,684. Officially, Lycoming County has 43 cases and two deaths. Clinton County 13 cases, Sullivan one case, Tioga 15 and two deaths. Among positive and probable cases of COVID-19 in the state, as of yesterday 58 new deaths were reported bringing the statewide total to 1,622.  Sec. of Health Dr. Rachel Levine continues to urge Pennsylvanians to stay home making as few trips as possible to shop  and wear a mask to protect not only yourself, but others. There are 136,272 patients who have tested negative to date.

EVAN GETS FASTER TESTING KITS FOR CERTAIN PATIENTS
Evangelical Community Hospital reports that they have started using a limited supply of COVID-19 RNA testing kits that provide faster results than were previously available. Administrators from Evan  says the kits will be prioritized for patients at the hospital,  Emergency  patients to be admitted, and patients being discharged to skilled nursing facilities. Accoridng to the Sun Gazette, some test kits at Evan are still conducted use of an off site commercial or state lab.  They say 614 patients tested for the virus, 65 of them positive and one death.

FARMER WHO EMPLOY SEASONAL WORKERS MUST FOLLOW COVID-19 GUIDELINES
The state department of Agriculture has set standards for farmers who provide housing for seasonal workers on their properties called the Seasonal Farm Labor Act.  According to the department, farm labor camps must be modified to ensure social distancing in living quarters, as well as standards for sanitation, food facilities and fire protection.  There are also requirements to follow if a worker is diagnosed  with COVID-19.  A complete list of guidelines is available at agriculture.pa.gov.

TURBOTVILLE CANCELS PET PARADE AND CARNIVAL
The Turbotville Area Community Carnival Committee has announced that they have regrettably made the decision to cancel the 2020 Community Carnival and Pet Parade, originally scheduled for June 1st thru the 6th. According to their social media reports, the cancellation comes due to an abundance of caution due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  They are looking forward to the carnival in 2021.

A Tiger Woods-Phil Mickelson golf match involving football legends Peyton Manning and Tom Brady is planned for May, according to Turner Sports. “The Match: Champions for Charity” will benefit coronavirus relief. The event will air live on TNT — possibly Memorial Day weekend — at an undisclosed location without spectators.

The NFL draft could be the most bet on sports event ever tonight, as all sports are shut down due to the corona virus.  Sources involved in the The gambling industry say online betting sites are taking in 3 times the amount of bets and money on this year’s draft compared to last year.  Wagers across the industry could total $5 million IN the US.

Watkins without pay through the 2020 postseason and stripped the team of its second-round draft pick this year after completing an investigation into allegations that the Red Sox stole signs during the 2018 season.  Former Red Sox manager Alex Cora, is suspended through the 2020 postseason as well — but only for his previous conduct as Houston’s bench coach,

NHL greats Wayne Gretzky and Alex Ovechkin might not be the greatest when it comes to virtual hockey, but their online games Wednesday helped raise more than $40,000 for relief efforts related to the coronavirus pandemic. More than 300,000 fans watched their EA Sports NHL 20 showdown via a livestream on the Washington Capitals’ Twitch channel.  Gretzky and Ovechkin matched donations so the money will be split between 2 Canadian food bank funds.

COVID-19 COUNT NOW DETERMINED BY CONFIRMED AND PROBABLE CASES
The Pa Department of Health has reported a total of 34, 528 total coronavirus cases in the state with 1,296 new positive cases.  Health Department Secretary Dr Rachel Levine has reported in recent days they are reconciling data from various sources to get accurate numbers, and announced yesterday how they define cases of the virus; as confirmed or probable.  “Confirmed”, being those who have had a positive test result and “probable” being those who have been in contact with those infected and who have symptoms.  There are 360 new deaths reported bringing that total to 1,564.  Deaths are also being counted as confirmed and probable. Statewide there are now 1,264 confirmed covid-19 deaths and 300 probable, with coronavirus as a secondary cause of death.

LYCOMING COUNTY CORONER UNSATISFIED WITH DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH REPORTING
As the Pennsylvania Department of Health reconciles data from various state sources and reports deaths of COVID-19, the Lycoming County Coroner told the Sun Gazette that he, along with other coroners in the commonwealth are frustrated with the way the Pennsylvania Health Department has been compiling data and not involving area coroners at all.  County Coroner Charles E. Kiessling Jr., who is head of the state’s PA State Coroners Association, says it’s flawed to classify the death of person on where they lived, not where they died.  According to a coroners law in place since 1933, a county coroner or medical examiner has jurisdiction and must be notified of deaths in their county.  Kiessling said that the health department did not notify him of the two deaths now reported in Lycoming County.

HIT AND RUN ACCIDENT INJURES WOMAN AND CHILD ON A BIKE
A woman riding a bike with an 11 month old child in a carrier on the back was struck in a hit and run Tuesday morning in Mifflinburg.  According to North Central PA dot com, 23 year old Abigail Martin  was operating the bike heading west on the 1100 block of Red Limestone Ridge Road.  Police report a person driving a white sport utility vehicle hit Martin and the baby and fled the scene on Red Ridge Road.  Life Flight responded to the scene.  Police are asking if you have information about the incident or know of a white Ford Explorer model year between 2005 and 2010 with front end damage, call state police at Milton.  Officials at Geisinger said Martin was in fair condition but no word on the condition of the child.

RECYCLING LOCATIONS TO OPEN IN COUNTY
Lycoming County Commissioners said in their meeting yesterday that they are preparing for two recycling locations to open in the county.  According to the Sun Gazette, Lycoming County Resource Management Services will collect recycling from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday until Saturday. At the  Pennsylvania College of Technology parking lot on W. Third St., next to the Transfer Station), and the Kmart parking lot, on E. Third St. in Loyalsock Township. Residents are asked to wear masks while being at these sites.

LOW COVID NUMBERS MAKE ELECTIVE SURGERY POSSIBLE AT UPMC
UPMC announced yesterday they will resume some elective surgeries amid the absence of a predicted surge of COVID-19 patients in Central and Western Pennsylvania. Dr. Donald Yealy, UPMC’s chair of emergency medicine, said during a virtual press conference that coronavirus cases are on the decline in the communities the system serves. And that UPMC, has what they need as far as needed basic supplies. According to the Sun Gazette, the decision goes against the current recommendation of the Department of Health Secretary who said the state has begun talking to hospitals about resuming some surgeries but “we’re not there yet. Dr Yealy said The COVID-19 caseload remains at levels that are low, consistent and manageable at the UPMC  facilities.

LOCYALSOCK SCHOOL BOARD TO MEET VIRTUALLY OVER BUDGET

COMMS WANT ALL RESIDENTS TO HAVE FOOD DURING EMERGENCY
At the Lycoming County Commissioners meeting yesterday, they discussed working with the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank so that families stay fed as unemployment claims in the state surge.  According to the Sun Gazette, Commissioner Rick Mirabito is seeking to hear from any other agencies or groups who can make sure community members have food.  Anyone who is facing food insecurities at this time is encouraged to call 211 and get help and advice from the Lycoming County United Way.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS CANCELLED FOR 2020
Special Olympics of Pennsylvania and Penn State University have announced that the 2020 Summer Games in State College that was to be in June, has been cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns.  The “Be a Fan” Torch Run is also cancelled according to the news release, but they say a “Virtual Summer Games” is being planned so that the spirit of the athletes and volunteers can still be felt.  Organizers at Penn State, where they’ve been holding the Special Olympics for 33 years say they are committed to a Summer Games in 2021.

SOIL REMEDIATION TODAY ON ROUTE 15 SOUTH
PennDOT will   be working on Route 15 southbound in Lewis Township, Lycoming County to replace soil and fix the shoulder after a tractor trailer accident from the weekend.  The wreck occurred at around 2am and blocked traffic and causing a detour through steam valley to trout run last Saturday morning.  Crews will be at  mile marker 144, today between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM, weather permitting. Motorists should expect the left lane to be closed while the work is being completed.

The New England Patriots have agreed to trade Rob Gronkowski to the Buccaneers in a deal that reunites the retired tight end with Tom Brady in Tampa Bay. Gronkowski’s agent, said yesterday on SportsCenter that the five-time Pro Bowler has been feeling great physically since he retired from football nearly 13 months ago.

The Los Angeles Chargers on Tuesday became the latest NFL team to reveal new uniforms this offseason. The look includes a signature powder blue, gold and white color scheme. The design features a simplified bolt on the jersey and pants, and numbers have been added to helmets

Milwaukee Bucks guard George Hill says his wife’s 85-year-old grandmother recently battled the coronavirus and beat it. Hill has been in San Antonio during the NBA’s pandemic-imposed hiatus.

 

Without any enforceable restrictions against large gatherings in place in the state over the coronavirus pandemic, Park Jefferson International Speedway — a dirt track in North Sioux City, South Dakota — is planning to hold the Open Wheel Nationals on Saturday with ticket sales capped at 700 for a track with a seating capacity of 4,000.

WOLF ANNOUNCES PLANS TO OPEN THE PA ECONOMY
Governor Tom Wolf announced yesterday that May 8th will be the target date for a reopening of businesses in Pennsylvania. He said that the state has made sufficient progress against COVID-19 and in addition to allowing curb side liquor sales this week, he will allow more building construction which using social distancing guidelines as well as car sales online.  The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 950 new people testing positive for the virus, bringing the statewide total to more than 33,200.  According to the Sun Gazette, this is the first time the new cases reported have been fewer than 1,000 since April 1st signifying that the pandemic may be easing.  The death toll in the commonwealth went up yesterday by 92 for a total of 1,204.  Lycoming County has reported it’s first death from the coronavirus with 40 cases reported.

SOME ELECTRICITY CUSTOMERS MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR ASSISTANCE
As a result of the economic difficulties many area utility customers face during the covid-19 pandemic, STEP Utilities Assistance will broaden eligibility requirements for PPL customers using different fuel sources for heat and increasing the maximum allowable household income for those who receive assistance.  Customers can make up to 250% of the federal poverty rate to be eligible for Operation HELP: an annual income of up to $43,100 for a family of two, and $65,500 for a family of four. Your options are listed on the STEP website, in the Housing Options section of www.stepcorp.org. These programs are possible due to partnerships with PPL and UGI.

CABIN FIRE BURNS IN RURAL LOCATION, FIREFIGHTERS STRUGGLE TO GET TO THE SCENE
No information has been released about the owner of a cabin located just off Gamble Run Road that was damaged Saturday morning from a chimney fire that burned out of control for about 45 minutes.  According to the Sun Gazette, volunteer firefighters were challenged with getting to the structure on Route 414 in bad road conditions after 6 inches of snow fell in the area Friday night.  Volunteers from Brown Township, Black Forest, Wellsboro, Liberty and Waterville were on the scene.  Fire officials say the two-story cabin was damaged but repairs can be made.

CAMP CADET 2020 SEASON CANCELLED
The Pennsylvania State police have announced they will be cancelling upcoming Camp Cadet youth camps traditionally held in the spring and summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Colonel Robert Evanchick, commissioner of the state police said the decision has been made with everyone’s safety in mind and look forward to the programs in 2021.  Each year, state police volunteers coordinate youth camps for 27 weeks of sleep-away camps and day programs

MONTGOMERY BOROUGH IS 2ND AMENDMENT SANCTUARY
Montgomery Borough Council has adopted a unanimous resolution to support the Constitution and has approved Montgomery Borough as a  2nd Amendment Sanctuary.  During a recent Zoom teleconference, the council agreed on an ordinance that the borough will not spend money to enforce laws determined to be illegal and it affirms the support of  citizens’ Constitutional rights, including the right to bear arms.  According to the Sun Gazette, the activist group Gun Owners of America is advocating ordinances and resolutions throughout Pennsylvania.  Buffalo township has done the same in Union County and Bradford County has adopted a similar resolution at the county level .

There’s a new color coded map put online by the Pennsylvania Department of Health showing the concentration of people who have tested positive for coronavirus cases in every ZIP code.  Users can click on the map and see the latest number of positive test results from people in each region along with the number of who tested negative. WASD SCHOOL BOARD WILL MEET ONLINE
The Williamsport Area School Board will meet tonight at 6pm online and the public is welcome to watch the live feed.  A district spokesperson told the Sun Gazette that information on how to connect to the meeting will be on the Williamsport Area School District website at wasd.org before the meeting.  Williamsport School board meetings  are usually the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month.

Miami Marlins CEO Derek Jeter will indefinitely forego his $5 million salary during the coronavirus outbreak.  He also made an announcement that all members of his baseball ops will be paid through May 31st.

MLB Comissioner Rob Manfred said starting May 1st he will suspend  uniform employee contracts which will allow teams to lay off or cut the pay of major and minor league coaches, managers, fullt-time scouts and trainers.

The first two episodes of the Michael Jordan documentary series “Last Dance”  gave ESPN big ratings .  The series chronicles Jordan and the Chicago Bulls when  they went to their 6th NBA Championship in 8 years.  6.1 million viewers tuned in.

The New England Patriots will used their Thursday night “color rush” uniforms as their home uniform. It’s the first time in 20 years the team has changed the primary uniform.

The 51st World Series of Poker has been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Organizers are now targeting this fall to hold te World Series of Poker which was slated to begin May 26 at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.  In March,  Casinos in the state were to cease operations until at least April 30th.
