MAN HOSPITALIZED AFTER ACCIDENT INTO FENCE AT WIREROPE

Police are investigating after a security guard discovered a 68 year old man trapped in a vehicle that was entangled in a fence after 8am Sunday morning on the property of Bethlehem Wire Rope off of Locust Street in Williamsport.  According to the Sun Gazette, police say it’s not clear whether the man had been trapped most of the night, for there was no report of an accident on the private property.  City fire officials had to cut the fence to free the red Mazda Protégé, allowing the man to be extricated and taken to an area hospital.  An investigation continues into the accident by Williamsport City police.

CONVICTED MURDERER DIES IN PRISON

The woman serving a life sentence for the 2018 murder of her third husband, has died in prison.  According to the Standard Journal, 79 year old Myrle Miller was convicted in Union County by a jury in April 2023 for poisoning and defrauding her husband 77-year-old  John Nichols.  Miller’s attorney filed a notice to discontinue Miller’s appeal in the Pennsylvania Superior Court January 8th due to her death, but did not release a cause of death.  Miller had been an inmate at the State Correctional Institute-Muncy.

STATE FUNDING APPROVED FOR LOW-INCOME NEIGHBORHOODS

Senator Yaw announced over 3 million dollars in funding to assist low-income individuals and improve distressed areas throughout Lycoming and Sullivan counties yesterday through the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development’s (DCED) Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP). Penn College is set to receive $1,154,998.80 in partnership with Coterra Energy to upgrade lab spaces for automation, electrical and HVAC students. The money also provides scholarships to students from low-income families, rural areas and active military and veteran students. Legislation to expand the NAP was sponsored by Senator Gene Yaw and Senator Nick Miller.

BUTTER SCULPTURE TO BE RECYCLED

In a process that creates bio-diesel fuel, the butter from the 2025 Pennsylvania Farm Show Annual Butter Sculpture is heading to Mifflintown to be recycled this week.  According to the PA Agriculture Department, the sculpture that featured a large dairy cow and entitled “From Moo to Marvel:  Dairy Cows Power PA” was deconstructed Sunday in Harrisburg and will be taken to Reinford Farms in Juniata County.  The sculpture is crafted from 1,000 pounds of butter donated by the Land O’Lakes plant in Carlisle and was sculpted each year for the last 23 years by Jim Victor and Marie Pelton.

DRIVER WHO SHOT AT ANOTHER CAR SENTENCED

A woman from Williamsport, who was found guilty of reckless endangerment by a jury last May, had her delayed sentencing hearing Friday, during which she was given six to 23 months in state prison.  According to the Sun Gazette, court records say 31 year old Alexa McDevitt fired three shots from her car at the victim’s car after she said she was cut off on I-180 in Montoursville, shattering his car window, but causing no injury.  McDevitt was also sentenced to 18 months of supervised probation after release.  She was given a deferred date of January 27th to arrive to begin serving her sentence so that she has time to file motions for appeal and bail.

FOURTH SUSPECT CHARGED WITH MURDER IN COUDERSPORT

After three suspects were charged, tried, found guilty and incarcerated for their participation in the murder of a 19 year old from man whose body was found in the woods near Coudersport, a fourth suspect who had previously tipped off police as to where the body was left,  recently had homicide charges also filed against him.  According to North Central PA dot com, 65 year old Varley William Fuller was arrested in New York state and was charged January 10th with  several counts, including first, second and third-degree murder charges for the beating, torture and death of Joshua Ramos in July of 2020.

SUNBURY TO CHANGE FEE SCHEDULE FOR SKILL GAMES

Sunbury City Council and Mayor Josh Brosius met with business interests who operate Pennsylvania Skill games  yesterday afternoon to discuss a proposed fee schedule set to collect a percentage of earnings from each gaming machine in addition to the prior $100 dollars per machine per year. City officials say fees collected on the machines will also help council to not have to raise taxes and provide more citywide events, help the fire departments, and save money. According to the Sunbury Codes department, there are more than 200 machines in the city currently.

PENNDOT PHOTO CENTERS CLOSED FOR MLK JR. DAY

PennDOT announced that that all driver license and photo centers, including the full-service center in Harrisburg, will be closed Saturday, January 18, through Monday, January 20, 2025, in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. Customers may still obtain a variety of driver and vehicle products and services, including all forms, publications, and driver training manuals online.  PennDOT also reminds you that if you’re traveling after May 7th 2025, you’ll need a REAL ID or other federally-accepted form of identification to board the flight. Men’s  –  Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz took their first step toward a potential quarterfinal showdown at the Australian Open, with both winning their opening matches Monday.

It was his first match with former rival Andy Murray as his coach. Murray retired as a player at the Paris Olympics in August.

Women’s   – No. 8 Emma Navarro needed to play the longest WTA-level match of her career — 3 hours and 20 minutes — and rallied from 5-3 down in the third set to beat fellow American Peyton Stearns in the first round of the Australian Open today.

A semifinalist at the US Open last year, Navarro was seeded in the top eight at a major for the first time.

LYCO CONTROLLER SUBMITTED RESIGNATION

Lycoming County’s Controller who over the past few years mounted a legal battle against the county commissioners over who should have control over county functions like general ledger, payroll and accounts payable, has resigned as of Friday afternoon.  According to the Sun Gazette, Krista Rogers who had been in the Lycoming County Controller position since 2004 which was set to expire in 2027 had recently settled the department function and control case that went in her favor in which the county is required to pay Rogers’ legal fees.  The County deputy Controller Nikki Gottshall, will serve as acting controller until a new person is appointed and approved by the Pennsylvania Senate.

JEWELRY THEFT INVESTIGATION IN SNYDER COUNTY

A burglary investigation is ongoing after thousands of dollars-worth of jewelry was stolen from a home in Mt Pleasant Mills.  According to state police at Selinsgrove, two individuals said that from between November 20th to December 23rd, twenty one pieces of jewelry, including high school rings and wedding bands, some cash and gift cards,  all went missing from their home.  If you have information about the Snyder County theft or know about any suspects, call state police at 570-374-8145.

VANDALIZED FUR FARM IN SUNBURY UP FOR SALE

The fur farm in Sunbury that has been targeted by animal rights activists, leading to recent break-ins and release of mink from the property, is up for sale.  According to North Central PA dot com, Stahl Mink Farm’s land and facilities along Route 890 in Rockefeller Township have been posted for sale through a real estate agency based in Lemoyne.  Two suspects who were caught in 2024 vandalizing the farm and releasing hundreds of animals into the wild, are now free after posting bail, but will face their yet to be scheduled  formal arraignment soon.

REAL ID DAY IN TOWANDA

The Monroeton Driver’s License Center in Towanda is planning a REAL ID day today so that residents can comply with the new federal requirement that all U.S. residents have a REAL ID by this spring.  According to PennDOT, more than 2.5 million Pennsylvanians have already opted in to the REAL ID program, but anyone who wants to board domestic commercial flights, enter military bases, and enter certain federal facilities won’t be able to after the May 7th deadline without the REAL ID.   The event is from 10 til 2pm – hours the facility isn’t normally open. Those who received their first Pennsylvania driver’s license, learner’s permit, or photo ID card after Sept. 1, 2003, may already have their REAL ID.  Get details about the requirements to get a REAL ID at pa.gov.

MAN FACES CHARGES FOR DAMAGE DONE TO ATV FACILITY

A man driving an ATV in Coal Township repeatedly rammed a metal gate at an ATM riding facility, causing over 25 hundred dollars-worth of damage on December 28th. According to State police at Stonington,   30 year old Steven Schaefer of Penndel was charged with criminal mischief after witnesses saw he did damage to the gate with his vehicle at Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area.  One hundred sixty five dollars worth of damage was also done to the gate’s locking mechanism. No word if any fines or other charges were imposed on Schaefer.

ANIMALS SEIZED FROM HOMELESS WOMAN

Police removed two dogs and a cat from the care of a homeless Union County woman living in her car December 18th and charged her with animal cruelty.  According to State Police at Milton, they were called to AJK Boulevard Kelly Township to do a welfare check on 47 year old Summer Renee Gehrer, who is from New Columbia, on a day when it was 34 degrees and raining.  After obtaining search warrants for the woman’s car, they seized the animals and took them to a shelter for proper care.  Gehrer has a summary trial coming up on January 22nd.

YAW REAPPOINTED AS ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITTEE CHAIR

State Senator Gene Yaw has been reappointed to serve as chairman of the Senate Environmental Resources and Energy Committee for the new legislative session in 2025 through 2026.  Yaw has served as chairman of the committee since 2013 and was reappointed to the post by Senate President Pro Tempore Kim Ward. The Environmental Resources and Energy Committee oversees the state’s energy resources and development, including regulations and conservation effort, policies impacting surface mining, coal, oil, gas and mineral leasing and broad oversight of air and water resources.

COGAN STATION FARM NAMED CENTURY FARM

A Cogan Station family farm has been named a Century Farm, at the final days of the Farm Show in Harrisburg Friday.  A Century farm is one in which it is owned by the same family for at least 100 consecutive years, with a family member living on the property and earning a certain amount annually from farm products. According to the department of Agriculture, Adam and Shannan Kinley work the Kinley family which has been in operation since 1904 and is now a beef and row crop operation. WILLIAMSPORT MAN LEAD POLICE ON HIGH SPEED CHASE

A Williamsport man who had faced drug charges for allegedly selling fentanyl to an informant last year, led city police on a  high speed chase early Wednesday from Memorial Avenue to Route 15 near the Hepburnville exit.  According to the Sun Gazette, Sean Patrick Ford began the pursuit with police when he was seen fleeing an area at a high rate of speed where police were investigating a shots-fired call, about 12:05am.  Ford was apprehended in the neighborhood moments after he ran from his GMC SUV that had crashed near Marshall Avenue just off of Lycoming Creek Road.  Police say Ford was impaired while he led the pursuit.  He was arrested on multiple charges including resisting arrest and DUI.  He was incarcerated in  lieu of 25 thousand dollars bail.

MORE CHARGES FOR IMPRISONED DRUG SUSPECT

A man from Williamsport has been recommitted to Lycoming County Prison after an arraignment last week for more drug charges stemming from allegedly selling cocaine to an informant in 2023.  According to the Sun Gazette, inmate Niklas David Keller was already in jail for charges filed by the Lycoming County Narcotics Unit for his involvement in a drug deal November 21st on Lloyd Street in Newberry, but now he faces three felony counts each of delivery of a controlled substance, and illegal use of a cellphone recently filed by state police.  He remains incarcerated in lieu of an additional 100 thousand dollars bail.

NEW LEADERSHIP AT LYCOMING REGIUONAL POLICE DEPARTMENT

There is a new Lycoming Regional Police Chief after Chief Nathan DeRemer recently resigned from the position.  According to a press release, Captain Christopher Kriner was named to the post by the Lycoming Regional Police Commission effective Thursday.  LRPD commissioners say Kriner has over 24 years of experience and brings leadership and a dedication to public service with him to the position.  The Lycoming Regional Police Commission meets the 2nd Wednesday of each month alternating between the borough building in Jersey Shore and the Municipal building in Williamsport.  Details at LRPD.org.

PUBLIC MEETING ABOUT SHAMOKIN ROAD UPGRADE

As part of the recent GoShamokin initiative, the city of Shamokin and SEDA-COG will hold a public information session 6 p.m. Jan. 30 in the Shamokin-Coal Township Public Library.  According to the News Item, the session will address the discussion surrounding the Independence Street makeover.  Two point seven million dollars of federal funding was made available for the remodel.  The city has applied for a $2 million multimodal state grant to complete the project.

WILLIAMSPORT WOMAN FACES CHILD ENDANGERMENT CHARGES

A Williamsport woman was recently in court answering to child endangerment charges after she called child services to say she couldn’t handle her 2 year old son.  According to the Sun Gazette,  police say that on July 9th, 22 year old Teanna Elizabeth Brennan allegedly told a caseworker that she had stopped her 2-year old from suffocating his younger sister then kicked him in the stomach.  Brennan was told to take the children to UPMC Williamsport.  She was charged with felony endangerment and simple assault and was taken into custody, but has since been released on 150 thousand dollars bail.  During the same proceedings, Brennan waived her hearing on previous felony access device fraud charges from 2023 and posted 15 thousand dollars bail in that case.

WOMAN CHARGED WITH DUI AND ASSAULT ON AN OFFICER

A woman from Williamsport is free on ten thousand dollars bail after she was arrested for hit and run DUI and assaulting a police officer, after she was apprehended at her home following the crash on December 1st.  According to the Sun Gazette, 58 year old Yvonne Fredin allegedly struck a parked car on the 27-hundred block of West Fourth Street in the city and kept driving to her home on Dove Street.  Authorities say Fredin was followed home by the victim after which Fredin admitted to police her involvement in the DUI but then kicked and injured a female officer. Police say Fredin was lethargic and struggling to speak and stand up from her alleged impairment.

RIBBON CUTTING AT THE NEW WAWA

There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Maynard Street Wawa convenience store opening January 23rd.  According to North Central PA dot com, the 6,049 square-foot store will open that morning at 8 with the ceremony at 8:30.  The grand-opening day will feature free coffee and a hoagie building competition honoring first responders.  The new store will be a part of Maynard Commons which just across from the campus of Pennsylvania College of Technology.  Wawa is planning 13 more stores in the region by the end of 2025.

SO. COLUMBIA GRADUATE GETS TEACHING AWARD IN ALASKA

A native Pennsylvania woman who graduated from Southern Columbia Area High School in 2010 has been awarded a national teaching accolade for her teaching skills in an Alaska elementary classroom.  According to the News Item, Emily Snyder, a first- and second-grade teacher at Nenana City School was given the Milken Award for increasing her students’ literacy scores by representatives from the  Alaska Board of Education, and the Milken Family Foundation. Snyder receives an unrestricted check for 25 thousand dollars as the 74th recipient of the award since Alaska joined the Milken Educator Awards in 1990.

LINDEN MAN ARRESTED FOR STRANGULATION

A Linden man was taken into custody for allegedly strangling a victim January 2nd after she told him how he should use the cash he had won at a local VFW.  According to North Central PA dot com, 43 year old Dustin Dewaine Keller and the female victim argued inside a car outside their residence about whether to share lottery winnings.  Police say Keller then attacked the victim before they were called in for a domestic dispute.  When officers arrived they observed red marks on the victims neck before attempting to take Keller into custody.  He allegedly resisted arrest before he was subdued and arrested.  Keller faces strangulation, simple assault , resisting arrest charges and more.  He is in Lycoming County Prison in lieu of 50 thousand dollars monetary.

THIEVES HACK ATM IN LEWISBURG

Twenty nine thousand dollars was stolen a couple of months ago from an ATM in Lewisburg.  According to State Police, unidentified suspects hacked the ATM machine at the Service First Federal Credit Union on Walter Drive in Kelly Township on November 6th.  If you have information about the suspects or the theft, call state police at Milton (570) 524-2662.

TOLLS INCREASE ON THE TURNPIKE

Tolls on the Pennsylvania Turnpike went up five percent last weekend and open tolling has begun in some areas of the state-wide roadway.  According to the Keystone, prices went up after bond borrowing requirements require the Turnpike commission to continue to raise the costs over the next 14 years.  Toll booths have been removed and there are overhead gantries installed in the eastern part of the state.  The process uses EZ pass or Toll-by-Plate transactions for cars traveling on the Turnpike there.  The western section will see Gantry construction completed by January 2027.

“OPERATION WARM” HAS COATS AND SHOES FOR SELINSGROVE KIDS

Pre-registered children are able to take advantage of free coats, shoes and socks this month at the Operation Warm event in Selinsgrove.  According to the Union-Snyder Community Action Agency they are partnering with W&L Subaru to provide coats in sizes ranging from 2T to adult medium and shoe sizes from children’s 11 to youth 7.  Families can email [email protected] or call 570-374-0181 for more information about registering for the give-away that will take place at the CVAC office on Bridge Street in Selinsgrove on January 23rd.

FIGHT AT LOYALSOCK NAIL SALON

Two women got into an argument that escalated to a physical altercation at a Loyalsock Township nail salon December 30th.  According to police reports, they were called to New Summer Nails for a noise complaint.  Forty year old Limeng Yang allegedly had grabbed a woman’s arm to keep her from walking out the door at about 4pm.  That person punched Yang in the face.  Yang faces harassment charges.

NY MAN ARRESTED FOR SELLING DRUGS TO PATIENT IN SAYRE

A man from Binghamton New York was arrested outside a hospital in Sayre for allegedly selling drugs to a patient admitted there.  According to North Central PA dot com, 36 year old Christopher Arnold, was seen on surveillance video by hospital staff who said they saw a drug transaction take place December 28th saying they were visiting the patient.  Arnold and another man were questioned when they were sitting outside the facility and then police say they took Arnold  into custody after investigators said there was fentanyl inside a baggie found inside the hospital with the patient they said they visited – however, they could not tell the police the patient’s last name.  Arnold was charged with conspiracy to deliver and delivery of a controlled substance.  He is free on 65 thousand dollars bail.

CLOSURES FOR NATIONAL DAY OF MOURNING TODAY

Today is a National Day of Mourning after President Biden declared the day when Former President Jimmy Carter died December 29th.  According to media outlets, our longest living president will be laid to rest today at Washington National Cathedral.  As a result of the federal holiday, all post offices will be closed and regular mail will not be delivered, and the daily paper will not be printed.  The New York Times says the Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will close U.S. markets. The Supreme Court, federal courts, and the Library of Congress will also be closed.  State offices, schools, banks and private businesses are not required to close for a National Day of Mourning, but are still encouraged to fly flags at half-staff until January 29th.

DANVILLE MOOSE AND OTHERS RAISE FUNDS FOR FAMILY

The Danville Moose and Liberty Township Volunteer Fire Company are holding a fundraiser for the woman who lost her home to a fire on Christmas Eve in Danville.  According to organizers, a spaghetti and meatball dinner will take place Saturday January 18th to assist Anne Dewald and her family who lost almost everything in the blaze.  The event will happen at the Danville Moose at 458 Mill Street in DanvillE with food, raffles, entertainment and more.  Call 570 274-1121 for information.

MUNCY MAN CHARGED WITH ARESON FROM 2020 INCIDENT

A man from Muncy is facing arson charges after police say he set fire to his mother’s home in South Williamsport several months after she died.  According to the Sun Gazette, an affidavit was filed this week that alleges 43 year old Peter Allen Zielewicz, who had previously involved himself with the South Williamsport Fire Department, had access at the time to road flares and materials that were found to be the origin of a fire that was intentionally set at the vacant Hastings Street home in October 2020.  Investigators say Zielewicz committed arson to collect insurance money.  He faces several felony charges including arson, possession of explosive materials, failure to prevent a catastrophe and more.  He was released on 50 thousand dollars bail.

MILLERSBURG MAN ATTEMPTS TO CASH FALSE CHECKS

A man from Millersburg is in custody after he tried to cash fraudulent checks in Mount Pleasant Mills.  According to state police, 35-year-old Brian Lauver allegedly wrote a check to himself for 900 dollars and attempted to cash it at a local bank.  State police responded to a call from the bank officials who were told that Lauver had attempted to cash check that were not legitimate at he bank before.  He was arrested and charged in Snyder County with forgery and counterfeiting.  He is in custody in lieu of 15 thousand dollars. 

CHESTNUT FESTIVAL COMING TO LOCK HAVEN

Lock Haven will host the inaugural Pennsylvania Chestnut Festival this month, a festival will be held to honor the heritage of chestnut trees that are the inspiration for the name of Castanea Township.  According to the Clinton County Economic Partnership and Visitor’s Bureau, the event is January 25th 2-7pm and will be at the Castanea Fireman’s Picnic Grounds Building, at the Piper Memorial Airport on Lower Creek Road in Lock Haven.  There will be chestnut inspired foods as well as live polka music and an appearance by Lock Haven’s Private Stock Trio.  The PA Chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation will be on site promoting the comeback of the chestnut tree in Pennsylvania.  Get details at www.castaneatownshippa.gov.

PENN STATE GAME ON THE BIG SCREEN

Penn State vs Notre Dame will be available to watch at District Cinema Thursday night at 7:30.  According to The District Cinema at Lycoming Valley they will offer tickets for the Capital One Orange Bowl  – the College Football Playoff semifinal for 14 dollars plus fees.  The game is presented by ESPN and Theater Sports Network, at District Cinema, 965 Lycoming Mall Circle. DEWART FIRE DESTRTOYS HOME ALONG ROUTE 405

Firefighters from 3 counties battled a vacant house fire along Route 405 in Delaware Township early Tuesday morning.  According to the Sun Gazette, crews responded to the fire at about 3am which had engulfed the home and affected utility wires nearby.  Warrior Run Area Fire crews said the fire took about an hour to get under control as they had to shuttle water from a hydrant in the township.  Officials have not determined the cost of the damage, a state police fire marshal was expected to investigate this week.  Internet access was cut from the area due to the damaged wires, but no injuries were reported. 

ENDANGERMENT CHARGES FOR MAN WHO  KICKED CHILD

A man from Sunbury was arrested for with misdemeanor endangering the welfare of children after police were called in response to him kicking a 12 year old special needs child on December 26th.  According to North Central PA dot com, police say the child’s mother said 37 year old Timothy David Graefe was upset with the child for not  listening to him and allegedly kicked him in the ankle and knee before twisting his arm to make him comply.  When the child’s mother told Graefe to stop he threw a glass of water on her.  Graefe is also facing misdemeanor simple assault and summary harassment in Northumberland County Court.  His bail was set at 10 thousand dollars unsecured.

SENATOR GENE YAW SWORN IN AT THE CAPITOL THIS WEEK

Senator Gene Yaw was sworn into his fifth term in the Pennsylvania Senate yesterday in Harrisburg.  According to a press release, the Senator, who represents Bradford, Lycoming, Sullivan, Tioga and Union counties, and the other members of the Pennsylvania Senate Republican Caucus  were part of the ceremony at the Capitol.  Senator Yaw has served as chairman of the Senate Environmental Resources and Energy Committee, and currently is chairman of the Pennsylvania College of Technology Board of Directors, chairman of the Center for Rural Pennsylvania and vice chairman of the Chesapeake Bay Commission.  He was named to the City and State Pennsylvania Energy and Environment Power 100 list in 2023.

FLY TYING CLASS IN WILLIAMSPORT

A low cost fly tying class will be offered through this month and next by the Susquehanna Chapter of Trout Unlimited in Williamsport.  According to the Sun Gazette, the weekly course is 20 dollars for adults and 10 for chaperoned youth between 12 and 18, will be held Tuesday evenings at the Covenant Central Presbyterian Church at 807 West Fourth Street in Williamsport and runs through February 25.  Tools and materials will be provided.  Register by emailing [email protected] or calling or texting Walt Nicholson at 570-447-3600.

PEDESTRIAN STRUCK BY VEHICLE ON WASHINGTON BLVD

 A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle on Washington Blvd Sunday and his identitiy has been released.  According to the Lycoming County Coroner, 52 year old Gerald Miles was under the influence of alcohol at about 10pm as he crossed to the north side of the street, and was hit by a 19 year old driver  who told police he didn’t see Miles before he hit him since he was wearing dark clothing.  The man was taken to UPMC Williamsport immediately after the accident but died of  traumatic head and chest  injuries about 2:30 Monday morning.  Police are investigating and have impounded the car that hit Miles.  

SCHOOL BUS ACCIDENT BROUGHT LIVE WIRES DOWN

A school bus with students aboard struck a utility pole yesterday in Clinton Township that brought down utility wires onto the bus and trapped the occupants on board until PPL arrived and de-energized the wires.  According to the Sun Gazette, the accident occurred on Brouse Road near Route 405 at about 3:10pm and authorities commended the driver and 26 students who remained calm for the entire ordeal until they were able to exit the bus safely and leave the scene on another bus – about 4pm.  PPL shut down a power grid removing the live wire threat.  The driver was in contact with officials via cellphone during the entire incident and there were no injuries reported.

FISH AND BOAT COMMISSION HOLDING ZOOM MEETINGS

A slate of virtual meetings with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat commission is happening today.  According to the Sun Gazette, a fisheries and hatcheries committee meeting starts at 10 which is expected to include discussion on  the Stretegic plan for management of Trout fisheries in PA and brook trout conservation efforts, among other topics.  Other meetings today also include a law enforcement committee meeting at 2:30pm.  The PA Fish and Boat commission’s quarterly meeting will also be held online but it comes about January 27th.

WILLIAMSPORT MAN BRAVES THE COLD FOR HOMELESS VETS

A local man will spend 2 days in the brutally cold weather this weekend to raise awareness for homeless veterans in Williamsport.  According to the Sun Gazette, Paul Mills, sergeant-at-arms for the Sons of the American Legion Post 1, will camp out in front of the Legion on January 10th through the 12th to kick off Operation Help, a way to raise funds and bring awareness about Lycoming County veterans who face homelessness .  Mills will also be joined by the local Blue Star Mothers who will support him.  Mills will be in front of the American Legion Post 1, 10 E. Third St., Williamsport beginning noon on Friday.

DELIVERY DRIVER PEPPER SPRAYS STOPPED MOTORIST

An Amazon driver from Allenwood is facing harassment charges after pepper-spraying a motorist who stopped to speak to her along Tower Road in Union County.  According to the News Item, 30 year old Alisha Molino is a delivery driver who had pulled to the side of the road after going through a stop sign December 19th.  Milton State police say Amber Traver stopped to advise Molino that she had run the stop sign.  After driving away, Travers said she was followed by an angry Molino who got out of the truck and sprayed Travers through her open car window with pepper spray along the roadside in Limestone Township.  Molino was located nearby and was charged with simple assault, harassment and disorderly conduct and has a preliminary hearing today in Union County Court.

SENIOR FACILITY NEEDS SUPPLIES FOR EVACUEES

In the aftermath of the fire that displaced residents at the Mount Carmel Senior Living Community, the facility which is west of Mahanoy City, who took them in, is seeking support from the public.  According to media outlets, the Birches at Shenandoah Manor said they are in need of essential items since taking in the residents; including men’s and women’s clothing in various sizes, from small to 3X as well as Depends and other personal care products. NO SPAY/NEUTER VOUCHERS IN 2025

The Lycoming County SPCA has announced that will not be able to provide spay/neuter vouchers for low- to moderate-income eligible pet owners this year. According to the Sun Gazette, the LyCo SPCA posted on their social media pages, that due to grant restrictions, they are unable to offer a reduced rate incentive this year.  Upon hearing of the program cancellation, Mayor Slaughter said he wants to address the budget issue with city council members.  In Snyder, Northumberland, or Union Counties, residents can go online to sunpets.org for spay/neuter assistance in their communities.

CITIZEN’S POLICE ACADEMY COMING IN MARCH

Members of the public who want a greater understanding of law enforcement are invited to sign up for Citizen’s police academy – a 7 week weekly program that is designed to expose selected citizens to training officers receive and general law enforcement concepts and responsibilities.  The Wednesday evening sessions are taught by members of the Pennsylvania State Police and local departments and give an overview of multiple police procedures, techniques, and topics such as use of force, crash reconstruction, forensics, criminal investigation, DUI enforcement, and more.  Classes begin March 5th and those who are 18 years or older with no criminal history should submit an application before February 2nd.  Email sbarrett @pa.gov for more information.

MAN MAKING VIDEOS CHARGED WITH TRESSPASSING

A man from Mill Hall is facing possible charges after police say he was seen trespassing on land in Clinton County and the owners called police.  According to North Central PA dot com, 45 year old Steven Eoute was confronted by the couple while he sat in his truck with his wife allegedly making adult content TikTok videos.  He then fired multiple shots from a handgun after he was asked to leave the wooded area in Bald Eagle Township.  Police have charged Eoute with reckless endangerment with more charges potentially pending. 

MAN CHARGED WITH CRUELTY TO ANIMALS

The incarcerated suspect who allegedly shot a man several times November 8th at a home on Wither Hollow Road in Woodward Township, is facing additional charges of animal cruelty for shooting another man’s dog while it was in his care.  According to the Sun Gazette, Tyler Scott Whyte shot and killed Shawn Reid’s dog, just before Shawn Shipton, who was on the property to repair a vehicle, was shot and wounded.  Whyte now faces felony aggravated cruelty to animal charges and was recently recommitted to Lycoming County Prison in lieu of an additional 15 thousand dollars bail.  Whyte had been jailed without bail since last November for attempted homicide and related offenses.  Shipton is recovering from his injuries. 

GRANT FOR MONTGOMERY WATER INFRASTRUCTURE

About 800 customers in Montgomery Borough will benefit from almost one million dollars in grant money meant to upgrade the water line infrastructure.  According to the Sun  Gazette, State Representative Jamie Flick announced the funding made available through the Local Share Account Statewide program.  The upgrade will ensure that residents and emergency responders have access to reliable water service.  Montgomery Water Authority officials said the grant money will help replace infrastructure of a large part of Wagner Avenue and Broad Street.

FARM SHOW STARTS SATURDAY

The 109th Farm Show starts tomorrow in Harrisburg, but there is a food-court preview available starting at noon today until 9pm.  According to the farmshow.pa.gov website, the PA Preferred reception takes place this afternoon for farm show producers and Ag supporters and opening ceremonies will be broadcast live on social media tomorrow morning at 10am from the Main Hall.  Admission is free to the PA Farm Show Complex and Expo Center in Harrisburg, but parking is $15, and may be paid by credit card, at all Farm Show Complex-operated lots.

SHAMOKIN MAN ARRESTED FOR STRANGULATION

A man from Shamokin was taken into custody after police say he strangled his girlfriend for saying he drinks too much.  According to Shamokin Police witnesses called them December 14th after 50 year old Tracy Sperlbaum was seen choking the victim several times, once until she turned blue.  Sperlbaum had a small cut on his arm and said the victim used a knife to cut him, but police didn’t find a weapon.  He was charged with a felony count of strangulation, misdemeanor simple assault, and summary harassment with set bail at $5,000.

DEWART MAN BREAKS INTO WOMAN’S HOME

A man from Dewart was facing charges after he forcefully broke into a woman’s home in West Chillisquaque Township, stole a 5 dollar glass pig and left the property.  According to North Central PA dot com, 46 year old Paul McClintock kicked in the victim’s front door November 17th and shoved the woman into a wall before he stole the pig and fled.  Most charges were withdrawn against McClintock, who police say has a long criminal history.  He did plead guilty to a summary harassment charge in December 11th.

GUTTER WORK IN MIFFLINBURG NEXT WEEK

Work to install gutters is expected in Mifflinburg next week and there will be road restrictions as a result.  According to PennDOT, a contractor will be installing gutters this coming Wednesday on a property along Chestnut Street  which is Route 45 between Fifth and Sixth Streets in Mifflinburg Borough.  Work is expected to take place between 9am  and 11am with flaggers in place weather permitting.

FARM SHOW BUTTER SCULPTURE UNVEILED

The 2025 Butter sculpture at the 109th annual Pennsylvania Farm Show was unveiled last night and features a dairy cow set against a Pennsylvania farm backdrop, with a vibrant cityscape nestled in the distance. The latest sculpture was presented by the American Dairy Association North East and Pennsylvania Dairy Promotion Program, in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. The sculpture will be on display in the Main Hall of the Pennsylvania Farm Show through January 11th, after which the butter will be recycled at Reinford Farms in Juniata County.

MUNCY MAN FACES CHARGES FOR ROBBERY AND ASSAULT

A 20 year old Muncy man is facing charges of robbery, criminal mischief and more after he broke into the house of an acquaintance and took items last year with two other juvenile males.  According to the Sun Gazette, police say Marshall Joseph Rothrock was at the home along Route 220 in Shrewsbury Township with the two other suspects earlier in the evening of June 10th and returned around 10pm.  The juveniles allegedly assaulted the victim, and Rothrock recorded the incident.  He waived his preliminary hearing and is free on 50 thousand dollars bail.

DEFENDANT IN WILLIAMSPORT CASE WAIVES PRELIM HEARING

A defendant who is being held in connection with the fatal shooting of a Williamsport teenager March 2nd on East 3rd Street, had three charges against him withdrawn this week, including reckless endangerment and simple assault.  According to PennLive, 20-year-old Ibn Hakim Hunter of New Jersey waived his hearing Monday on charges of lying to police, obstruction of justice, and engaging in a riot, and a local judge declined to adjust Hunter’s 75 thousand dollars bail.  Police say Hunter gave false information about the night when Ahmeen Palmer was shot in the parking lot of the TGI Friday’s in Williamsport.  The suspect in the case Ja’hsir Legare who allegedly shot Palmer, remains at large.

MIDD-WEST WILL HAVE A DIRECTOR POSITION OPEN

A Midd-West School Board director has announced she will leave the position by February and a new appointment is expected to take her place for the year left on her term.  According to the Daily Item, Erica Hood told the board President about her plans, and Superintendent Joe Stroup says he awaits an official departure date from Hood, after which candidates will be sought and interviewed by the remaining eight board directors.

DISCUSSIONS POSSIBLE ABOUT BIKE LANES IN WILLIAMSPORT

A pilot bicycle lane project is getting attention in Williamsport.  According to the Sun Gazette, city authorities are exploring the possibility of a six mile loop that might connect riders to and from the future pump track at Shaw Place Park, with a safe corridor linking Brandon Park and the Susquehanna Riverwalk.  City officials say if a loop path would be considered a safety aspect to the city, it could qualify for a portion of fund from the Community Development Block Grant.  The pump track at Shaw Place Park is expected to be finished in 2025.

MAN ARRESTED FOR BEATING EIGHT YEAR OLD SON

A Mill Hall man who was seen allegedly slapping and punching his 8 year old son, causing him to bleed, was arrested in early December.  According to North Central PA dot com, witnesses at the Lowe’s in Mill Hall called in a report of child endangerment after they say they saw 40 year old Clint Dorman beat his son in his car.  Court records show that Dorman was arrested by State police and charged with child endangerment, simple assault, and harassment and that he had a bail hearing December 16th that changed from 45 thousand dollars monetary to unsecured.  Dorman’s arraignment is coming up January 28th

Police have issued a warrant for a New York man who claimed he lived in South Williamsport on a voter application, after an investigation began in July.  According to North Central PA dot com, the Lycoming District Attorney’s Office was notified by the Lycoming County Director of Elections and Registration about suspicious information on the application 49 year old Bryan Franklin Browne previously filled out.  Authorities say as they attempt to contact Browne he continues to evade them and refuse to answer questions, hanging up when they do make brief contact.  Browne is being charged unsworn falsification to authorities, statement under penalty, perjury and more.

GRANTS FOR MEDICAL EQUIPMENT IN OLD LYCO TOWNSHIP

The Old Lycoming Township Vol. fire company has received a grant to purchase life-saving equipment. According to North Central PA dot com, the grant, which was provided by the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania will allow the fire company to purchase new AED supplies, CPR training supplies and Stop the Bleed kits. Old Lycoming Assistant Chief Charles Kiessling said he was “extremely thankful to FCFP for…choosing to support [their] life saving efforts.”

FAMILY FUN NIGHTS AT THE LIBRARY

The James V. Brown Library in Williamsport is teaming up with STEP Head Start to host Family Fun Nights in 2025. According to NorthCentralPA.com, these events are designed to engage families with the library’s resources through storytelling and interactive activities. Family Fun Nights will be held in the Blue Program Room on the first floor of the Welch Children’s Wing. With the first event January 7th with registration required as space is limited. The College Football Playoff quarterfinal at the Allstate Sugar Bowl between Georgia and Notre Dame was not played Wednesday after a deadly pickup truck attack in New Orleans that killed 15 people and injured dozens more.  The game is today at 4pm Thursday. The winner advances to the January 9th Orange Bowl against Penn State.

LYCO CORONER RELEASES SCI MUNCY INMATE CAUSE OF DEATH

A woman from NJ who was serving a sentence for a 3rd degree murder conviction was found dead in her prison cell Sunday at SCI Muncy.  According to Penn Live, Lycoming County Coroner Charles E. Kiessling Jr. ruled that 41 year old Lisa Marie Stavish died by asphyxiation due to hanging at 6:07am.  It was three days after she was recommitted to the State Correction Institution at Muncy for allegedly violating her parole.  Stavish had been convicted of murder in 2005, she admitted to injecting a man with a fatal mix of cocaine and bleach and burying his remains. 

MAXIMUM SENTENCE FOR DUI FELON

A Columbia Crossroads man has been given the maximum penalty, 10 to 20 years in state prison, for being found guilty of killing a Towanda man while DUI in July.  According to North Central PA dot com, 39 year old Charles Fred Scott was already facing a DUI charge last summer when he struck and killed 39 year old Travis Delamater who was putting his child in a car seat just a few yards from the  local bar where Scott had been drinking.    Delamater’s wife and child sustained minor injuries.  Scott’s charges include DUI homicide, reckless endangerment, and two other separate DUI charges.

PENNDOT CLOSED FOR SEVERAL HOLIDAY DAYS

PennDOT has announced that all driver license and photo centers in the state, including the full-service center in Harrisburg, will be closed tomorrow for Christmas as well as be closed next Wednesday January 1, 2025, in observance of the New Year’s holiday.  Customers may still obtain a variety of driver and vehicle products and services, including  a complete listing of PennDOT driver and photo license center closings in 2025.

ARW TO SERVE DRIVE THRU CHRISTMAS DINNER

The American Rescue Workers’ annual Christmas Distribution served 1,200 families last Friday. The event is designed to address the need of families in the region who are struggling with food insecurity. In addition, the American Rescue Workers are offering a drive-thru on Christmas Day between 11am and 2pm where anyone can pick up a hot meal to-go.

MAN JAILED AFTER TRAFFIC STOP FOR WARRANTS

A 59 year old man from Lock Haven has been jailed for outstanding warrants after he was stopped for a traffic violation December 7th and Woodward Township police discovered his record. He was found to have two 10-year-old outstanding criminal warrants from Centre County.  According to the Daily Item, 59 year old Larry Halterman who is classified as an habitual offender due to several prior DUI convictions, was driving an unregistered, uninsured vehicle with a revoked and suspended license since 1998.  He faces new charges.  The owner of the vehicle he driving will also be cited for allowing Halterman to drive the unregistered car without insurance.

THIEF STEALS MONEY FROM LOGANTON DINER

A thief broke into a diner in Loganton and made off with almost 4 thousand dollars earlier this month.  According to North Central pa dot com, police say an unknown suspect broke a window of the Twilight Diner in Loganton and then used a grinder to cut open a safe and took the cash.  Authorities say the suspect was wearing a white Tyvek style suit and fled the scene in what some said was possibly a light-colored, Chrysler/dodge.  State policed at Lamar ask anyone with information about the burglary or the suspect to call the barracks, 570-726-6000.

FLORIDA MAN STEALS IDENTITY FROM SUNBURY VICTIM

A man from Florida stole the identity of a man from Sunbury and used a fake ID to withdraw money from the victim’s account in November.  According to North Central PA dot com, 56 year old Nathaniel McBride successfully withdrew over 19 hundred dollars from a credit union in Upper Augusta Township in Sunbury by answering all the security questions for the account and signing the receipt forging the victim’s name.  The man was caught in Delaware a few days later for the same crime. McBride was charged with a felony count of forgery, misdemeanor counts of theft, receiving stolen property, and identity theft and has a preliminary hearing January 7th.

CHRISTMAS EVENT AT UNION COUNTY LIBRARY TODAY

The Union County Public library will have a program today featuring Christmas traditions from around the world with their  Holiday Yule Festival.  Accordin got the Daily Item, children can enjoy learning about the magic of different holidays and festivals that happen worldwide including Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa and Diwali.  The program for elementray aged children begins at 11 a.m. until noon at the library on Reitz Boulevard.  The drop in event  is free and open to the public. MOTHER OF THREE CHARGED WITH CHILD ENDANGERMENT

A Williamsport mother of three children was charged last Wednesday with child endangerment and a misdemeanor drug charge after probation officers arrived at her West 4th Street home unannounced.  According to the Sun Gazette, authorities said that 24 year old Deionne Morton and her children who range in age from 3 to 5 were found at the home, living in deplorable conditions with human feces strewn around the residence and no furniture or beds for the children.  Officers searched and found a baggie with alleged drug residue in it in Morton’s room and arrested her.  The woman is on probation at this time for leaving children home alone in October of 2021.  Morton was incarcerated in lieu of 75 thousand dollars bail.

NEW JOBS COMING IN CLEAN HYDROGEN INDUSTRY

New jobs are coming to Lycoming County after Governor Josh Shapiro made an announcement to expand an existing Williamsport business with state funding to enter the clean hydrogen market, a growing Pennsylvania industry.  According to the Sun Gazette, Lycoming County-based PMF Industries will use a DCED investment of 4.6 million dollars to construct a 16,000-square-foot addition in the city that will house a new hot spinning machine and aluminum heat treating and tempering furnace. The company plans to create 20 jobs and retain 78 existing jobs with the expansion.

GREEK LIFE TO RETURN TO CU BLOOMSBURG

Commonwealth University is slated to revive Fraternities and Sororities at Bloomsburg. According to North Central PA dot com, the University conducted a study in 2023 assessing the benefits of returning Greek Life to Bloomsburg’s campus. The administration involved alumni from prior campus fraternities and sororities in the study and the relaunch of the program which is set for 2025. Faculty and staff advisors are set to be appointed as well as a hazing prevention and training program created. Formal affiliation with existing chapters will begin in the fall of 2025.

DAIRYMEN PREPARE FOR THE 109TH FARM SHOW

The Pennsylvania Dairymen’s Association will kick off the 2025 “Fill a Glass with Hope” 10th Anniversary celebration at the 109th Farm Show this January with an endorsement from the two-time Super Bowl champ Charlie Batch of the Pittsburgh Steelers.  There will also be a new menu at the Farm Show Food Court and free milkshakes on Military Appreciation Day January 9th.  The association revealed a few weeks ago that the 2025 milkshake flavor is mint this year. PORNOGRPHY SUSPECT FACES NEW CHARGES

A Hughesville man who was arrested for possessing child pornography has been charged with additional offenses. According to the Sun Gazette, 48 year-old Christopher M. Scott of 205 S. 2nd St. Hughesville, was arrested this September and charged with over 100 counts of child pornography. Since then, police have discovered new material on Stout’s devices. They also found he was in several group chats sending videos of minors performing explicit acts. Following his recent arraignment, Stout was recommitted to the Lycoming County Prison in lieu of an additional $95,000 bail.

DUI PATROLS IN PLACE FOR THE HOLIDAY

State Troopers will be on the roads this week making sure impaired drivers are not.  According to the Sun gazette, between Christmas and New Year’s Day state  troopers throughout the region will be conducting roving DUI patrols as well as conducting  DUI checkpoints at various locations during the holiday season.  Areas chosen for the patrols are where there has been a high number of DUI-related crashes in recent months.  Drivers are reminded to move over into an open lane when a police cruiser or other emergency vehicle that is stopped along the roadway with its emergency lights activated.

NEW TRAIL GIFTING BEER AGAIN THIS YEAR

A Williamsport brewery gifted their products this year again in appreciation of teachers, first responders and healthcare workers. According to North Central PA dot com, New Trail Brewing Company on Arch Street, started the tradition 3 years ago as a thanks to teachers at the end of their semester and offered free draft beer to educators in the area. Since COVID, New Trail has extended the giveaway to first responders and healthcare workers and switched from draft to packaged beer. This year the company gave out 1,500 cases of their products.

TOYS FOR TOTS WRAP UP FOR 2024

Backyard Broadcasting was a drop-off for the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program again this year. Toys were donated from before Thanksgiving through to this past Friday and ranged from dolls and kitchen play sets to Nerf blasters and bikes. According to Marine Corps Foundation officials, Backyard Broadcasting listeners contributed 1090 gifts. Of that total there were 922 toys, 135 stocking stuffers, 30 books, and a number of bicycles. Everyone at Backyard Broadcasting would like to thank our listeners for their generous donations throughout the holiday season.

In PIAA HS Wrestling this weekend, despite not having a champion, Montoursville won the team title at the King Of The Mountain tournament and host Central Mountain took runner-up.  The Wildcats’ Dalton Perry racked up 5 pins in less than 5 minutes.  Warrior Run’s Reagan Millheim claimed the 160 pound title.

In women’s volleyball, Penn State defeated Louisville 3-1 to capture their eighth national championship and first in 10 years.  Katie Schumacher-Cawley is the first woman to claim the Division I title as a head coach.
