SCHOOL SHOOTING IN STATE COLLEGE THWARTED
A 20 year old man who was planning a school shooting on the State College High School campus on the 26th anniversary of the Columbine shooting has been arrested. According to the Centre Daily Times, police were informed by a concerned citizen who knew Braeden Phillips, of Milroy along with an unnamed juvenile were planning a shooting event next Monday at the school building, including planting bombs in school bathrooms. Phillips was taken into custody Friday and has been charged with conspiracy to commit murder and carrying a handgun without a license. His first court appearance is Wednesday. THEFT AT COAL TOWNSHIP WALMART
A man who was formerly from Florida has been arrested for stealing items from a local Walmart. According to the News Item, Coal Township police charged Michael Scott Patterson Thursday on two felony theft charges for allegedly stealing more than 2500 dollars-worth of merchandise from the Coal Township store. He was sent to the Columbia County Prison in Bloomsburg on $30,000 cash bail.
POLICE TO RENEW SEARCH FOR DETAILS ON DECEASED MISSING MAN
State police have renewed efforts to solve the mystery of the disappearance of former Centre County District Attorney Ray Gricar, who was declared deceased in 2011, but whose remains were never found. According to state police, Gricar was last seen on April 15, 2005, in Bellefonte before he told his girlfriend he was headed to Lewisburg but never arrived. His red Mini Cooper was found near the Street of Shops in Lewisburg and his laptop and hard drive were found in the water nearby. Anyone with information should call 1-800-4PA-TIPS.
CITY TO PAY BACK MISAPPROPRIATED GRANT FUNDS
An installment plan has been approved so that the City of Williamsport can pay back misappropriated grant funds owed to the Federal Transit Administration. According to the Sun Gazette, the 71 year old former city finance director and former general manager of the former River Valley Transit, William E. Nichols Jr., is accused of misusing more than $500,000 in city, state and federal funds. The Attorney General has charged Nichols, who remains free at this time, with felony theft and tampering with records. He has not entered a plea in Dauphin County Court but is expected to appear in court May 5 with a Dauphin County judge on a motions hearing. $35,000 will be paid as a first installment of the 1.4 million owed from legislative contingency and each installment payment will be paid on the 15th day of each month thereafter.
MAN CHARGED AFTER STABBING IN SUNBURY
A stabbing Saturday in Shamokin has sent one man to the Northumberland County Jail. According to city police, 43 year old Raheem Seawright of Marienville, Forest County allegedly stabbed Brandon Ballous in the back inside an apartment at 319 N. Shamokin St and fled the scene. Police located Seawright and took him into custody. He faces several felonies of aggravated assault causing injury and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, as well as several misdemeanors including stalking. Seawright is being held in lieu of $250,000 bail.
TEEN IN CUSTODY OVER THREATS AT JUVENILE FACILITY
An 18 year old in juvenile residential care in Muncy Township is facing charges of terroristic threats after authorities there say she threatened two other youths at the facility. According to the Sun Gazette, police say 18 year old Amale Gaffga was involved in two incidents April 10th and 11th , one in which she attempted to damage property and lunged at staff members in a threatening manner, and another in which she provided marijuana and drug paraphernalia to juvenile female residents, Gaffga was arraigned on the terroristic threat charge along with corrupting the morals of a minor and disorderly conduct charges. She is in Lycoming County Prison in lieu of 15 thousand dollars bail.
SHAMOKIN MAYOR STEPPING DOWN OVER HEALTH CONCERNS
The Mayor of Shamokin has announced he will resign from his position to focus on his health. According to the Standard Journal, Rich Ulrich made the decision after serving as mayor for one term with a year left saying that COVID has affected him enough to struggle with his lung function. Ulrich said Councilwoman Barbara Moyer will take over as acting mayor until Council nominates someone and votes to accept them as mayor. The process should take place within 30 days. At this time, Councilman Mike McLaughlin is the only candidate running for mayor in May.
TROUT RUN STREAM CLEAN UP SATURDAY
A stream clean-up will be hosted by the Susquehanna Chapter of Trout Unlimited this Saturday April 19th at 9am. According to the Sun Gazette, general public volunteers are welcome to meet at the Trout Run Park Pavilion, which is just south of Trout Run and is accessed from old Route 15. Those who want to participate should bring their own gloves – but trash bags will be provided. Hot dogs will be served for lunch after the cleanup for volunteers at the Trout Run Park pavilion.
