CHARGES DROPPED IN FATAL WRECK, HEADS TO JUVENILE COURT
The adult charges against the teen from Reading who was involved in a fatal crash that killed a woman and seriously injured her husband, have been dropped and will be refiled in juvenile court. The head-on accident occurred on Route 87 north of Montoursville July 6th of last year which killed Kathleen McFadden and seriously injured her husband, who was driving. According to PennLive, Lycoming County District Attorney Thomas A. Marino said the driver, Stephen Andrew Yuhasz who turned 18 after the accident, is unable to be tried as an adult due to restrictions in the law allowing prosecutors to only try juveniles as adults for certain crimes – of which vehicular homicide is not included. Yuhasz has been free on supervised bail, and if tried in juvenile court, the outcome of the charges will be private.
SUNBURY MAN CHARGED WITH DUI
A man from Sunbury was arrested March 13th for allegedly causing a crash while under the influence of drugs in Snyder County. The crash took place in Monroe Township at Susquehanna Trail and Marketplace Boulevard. According to state police, they investigated and charged 41-year-old Zachery Grove with driving under the influence of drugs for the crash that also involved 39-year-old Deven Martin from Wellsboro. No major injuries were reported.
LOYALSOCK VALLEY ELEMENTARY TO CLOSE
The fate of an elementary school in the Montoursville School District was decided this week at the most recent school board meeting. According to the Sun Gazette, at last night’s meeting, the board voted 6 – 2 to close Loyalsock Valley Elementary School. The closure would come at the end of the 2026-2027 school year. Officials said the Loyalsock Valley students will consolidate with Lyter Elementary after a renovation to the building. The combined school would open at the beginning of the 2027-2028 school year.
HALF PRICE ADMISSION FOR NATIONAL TRAIN DAY
National Train Day is coming in May and the Taber Museum will offer discounted admission for all train enthusiasts who want to attend. According to a press release, the guest only needs to express or say “It’s National Train Day” to the attendant for half price admission on May 10th. The collection of 300 model trains provided by LaRue C. Shempp is on permanent display at the Taber and Lycoming County Historical Society at 858 West Fourth Street in Williamsport. . CHARGES FILED AGAINST WOMAN WHO CAUSED WRONG WAY ACCIDENT
The woman who caused a fatal wrong way crash on Route 220 in Porter Township in February, is being held without bail after being formally charged with third-degree murder, accident involving death, homicide by vehicle, three counts of reckless endangerment. According to North Central PA dot com, police say 53 year old Kari Lisa Greenaway told them she was suffering from a schizophrenic episode when she entered the highway going the wrong direction. Her Mercedes Benz SUV struck 38-year-old Michael Kurelja of Illinois who police say unsuccessfully attempted to steer out of the path of the accident. Witnesses said they tried to keep Greenaway at the scene as she walked down the center of Route 220 away from the accident before Lycoming Regional Police arrived. Greenaway is incarcerated after being deemed a risk to her own, and others’ health.
THOSE WITH WARRANTS HAVE TODAY TO TAKE CARE OF THEM
Sunbury police say a few hundred people who still have outstanding fines or warrants and have not responded to the two-week amnesty period provided to settle them this month, only have until the end of day today to take care of it. According to the Daily Item, officers are prepared to conduct a warrant roundup and bring anyone who hasn’t taken care of the outstanding legal issues in front of District Judge Rachel-Wiest Benner. Those on the list can either set up a payment plan, pay off the fine or get the warrant cleared. Anyone wanting to take care of their business today can go to the judge’s office at 399 Stadium Drive, in Sunbury.
MORE HELP AVAILABLE FOR TROPICAL STORM DEBBY DAMAGE
Survivors of Tropical Storm Debby with ongoing, unmet needs, can now receive more assistance through the state Department of Human Services. According to DHS’s Division of Emergency Planning and Response, they will continue to provide disaster response by coordinating direct case management services through the Community Action Association of Pennsylvania. Residents from Lycoming, Potter, Tioga, or Union counties can call 211 to be connected to a case manager who will assist them as they continue to navigate the state assistance process and fully recover from the disaster.
DONATIONS FOR SHELTERS TO HELP FAMILIES
WellSpan Evangelical Community Hospital has recently provided a 10 thousand dollar donation for cribettes and safety equipment to be given to local shelters. According to a press release, the hospital supports families in need through its Spotlight on Children’s Health initiative. The donation benefits Haven to Home Ministry in Sunbury, Transitions of PA Safe House in Lewisburg, and By Grace Transitional Home in Middleburg. WellSpan also provides safe sleep information to caregivers.
