GARBAGE TRUCK FIRE IN WILLIAMSPORT
There was a garbage truck fire yesterday in Williamsport. According to the Sun Gazette, Williamsport fire crews reported to West Third and Arch streets around 8am Tueday after a call came in about the fire discovered at the Harvest Moon parking lot. In order to put out the fire, firefighters had to remove all the garbage from the back of the truck to a portable dumpster so the fire could be extinguished and the trash be hauled away. The fire was in the trash itself. The truck was not damaged and there were no injuries reported.
POLICE INVESTIGATE THEFT AT SELINSGROVE MALL
Two teenagers were arrested after police discovered them with stolen items from the Boscov’s Susquehanna Valley Mall. According to state police at Selinsgrove, they were called to apprehend two male suspects, a 17-year-old from McAlisterville and an 18-year-old from Richfield who allgedly took 200 dollars-worth of high end items from the store. They face retail theft charges in Monroe Township.
MAIL-IN BALLOTS LEGAL WITHOUT WRITTEN DATE
Legislation was announced this week that Pennsylvania election boards cannot discard mail-in ballots solely for lacking accurate, handwritten dates on return envelopes. According to media outlets, a federal judge said the dating mandate violates the U.S. Constitution, impairing the right to vote. Officials in Berks County are considering an appeal and the state Supreme Court is also reviewing the issue. The judge noted that more than 10,000 ballots were rejected in 2022 due to the requirement.
MONTGOMERY BRIDGE WORK CONSIDERS FALCONS NESTING THERE Residents can expect a closure of the Montgomery River Bridge while crews work on a rehabilitation project, but work will not go on while peregrine falcons are nesting in the area. According to PennDOT, the construction schedule of was determined around the schedule of the birds who have been observed nesting near the Montgomery River Bridge since the 1990s in the cliffs lining the river. No work is be performed there between February 15 through July 31st. The bridge that carries Route 54 over the West Branch Susquehanna River in Montgomery and Muncy Creek Township will be closed from the late summer of 2026 to the fall of 2026. A public meeting featuring the full project presentation will take place at the Montgomery Borough Council Meeting on April 8 at 35 South Main St., Montgomery.
ARRESTS AFTER DOMESTIC INCIDENT IN COAL TOWNSHIP
Coal Township police have made a series of arrests after they were called to a domestic incident at 1016 W. Spruce Street in the Township. According to the Standard Journal, police responded to a complaint where 41 year old Kevin Kiernan, and 29 year old Payge Bennetch were allegedly causing a disturbance last Thursday. Police say Bennetch agreed to be interviewed by police at the Coal Township Police Department before Keirnan fled the scene. Bennetch also then ran from officers. They were both arrested later on Friday by Coal Township and Shamokin police at their home and incarcerated. Keirnan also faces felony burglary charges in a breaking and entering and stabbing incident from December 7th where with co-defendant 33 year old Justin Clark, of Shamokin.
HIGH SPEED CHASE LEADS TO DUI ARREST
A Williamsport woman is free on bail after she led police on a chase at speeds of up to 90 miles per hour while allegedly DUI on March 8th. According to the Sun Gazette, state police say they witnessed Samiyah Kramer run a red light at West Fourth and Walnut streets and pursued her until she ultimately crashed into a home on Campbell Street and fled her vehicle, attempting to run from authorities. An officer who ran after Kramer was injured, but she was soon apprehended and taken to UPMC for treatment. She has been charged with felony fleeing, evading arrest, DUI and hit and run. She posted 15 thousand dollars bail.
LEGISLATION PASSED IN HOUSE ABOUT FALSE THREATS AT SCHOOLS
Lawmakers in the Pennsylvania Senate have voted in favor of legislation that would make it a third-degree felony to make false threats of violence against schools. According to media outlets, Senator Michele Brooks, a Republican who represents Crawford, Lawrence and Mercer counties, reintroduced the measure which would create a third-degree felony charge of terroristic threats against school entities and higher education facilities. The Senate approved the measure 37-12 with all 27 Republicans joined by 10 Democrats in support. The bill now moves to the state House.
GRANT FOR UNION COUNTY 4TH OF JULY COMMITTEE
America250PA’s first Semiquincentennial Grant Round has been awarded to the Union County Veterans’ 4th of July Committee. According to media outlets, 200 thousand dollars in funds will be used to enhance next year’s milestone celebration. The event is traditionally on the last weekend of June as a pep rally before the 4th of July week. The public is invited to come and commemorate the 250th Birthday of our Nation.
