NATURAL GAS LEAK IN WATSONTOWN CLOSES ROUTE 405
A natural gas rupture yesterday in Watsontown caused an evacuation of several homes and a closure of Route 405 between West Brimmer Avenue and Susquehanna Trail. According to the Daily Item, the emergency response brought in crews from UGI to close off the damaged pipe at 4:50pm and crews from Watsontown Fire and Northumberland County EMA were also on the scene. Officals near the leak went to nearby homes as a precaution. According to PennDOT, Route 405 reopened after 6pm.
LYCOMING COUNTY ADMIN POSITION ELIMINATED
The Director of Administration and Chief Clerk position in Lycoming County was eliminated last Friday by the county commissioners, and the man who has been in the position since 2015, Matthew A. McDermott was let go. According to Penn Live, Commissioner Scott L. Metzger, said the move is about restructuring. The elimination of the combined position could possibly bring about three new positions, with a lower pay grade. McDermott’s current duties will be split between human relations director Michael Hagen and fiscal services director Mya Toon as they work to fill the new position. This is the second restructuring the commissioners have announced in the last two months.
TRAVELING MEMORIAL PLANNED FOR KULPMONT THIS SUMMER
The Vietnam Veterans and 9/11 traveling memorial walls are scheduled to come to Kulpmont this summer. According to the Standard Journal, as part of the borough’s 150th anniversary celebration, the Sons of the American Legion in Kulpmont will host the event. According to the Standard Journal, the monuments will arrive in the area around noon on July 3, with an escort from Lewisburg through Sunbury and Mount Carmel before reaching Kulpmont volunteers are needed to help set up, stand guard, and assist visitors. The Vietnam Veterans Traveling Memorial Wall is a three-fifths scale of the original in Washington, D.C.
BUCKTAIL STUDENTS HOPE TO CHANGE THE STATE FOSSIL
The Bucktail High School ecology class and student government club are looking to change the state fossil from the Trilobite to the Hynerpeton Bassetti meaning “Crawling monster from Hyner”, a unique and rare fossil actually discovered in Pennsylvania. According to the students, a petition is being distributed through a QR code on the Harry the Hynerpeton’s Facebook page and an official proposal will be presented to state legislators, 10am on April 15th at the Bucktail High School to attempt to persuade lawmakers to change the state fossil. The group is looking to change the designation for the state’s 250th birthday in 2026.
WOMAN ARRESTED FOR SETTING FIRE, ENDANGERING OTHERS
A Northumberland woman was taken into custody for charges over allegedly starting a fire in her E. Fourth St apartment last Thursday. According to the News Item, police were called for a fire at the address and they found that 56 year old Tina Marie Green had bricks and plastic on fire on her bedroom floor with a smoldering frying pan on top. Police removed the burning items and said other occupants of the building escaped the smoke and fire without injury. Green faces charges from a similar incident on March 21st. She was arraigned Friday and is in Northumberland county jail in lieu of $75,000 cash bail. Her preliminary hearing is April 9th.
LOGANTON MAN ARRESTED FOR DUI
A man from Loganton was arrested for DUI and fleeing the scene March 19th in the 2500 block of Rauchtown Road in Crawford Township. According to State police at Lamar, 58 year old Robert Furl allegedly fled from the Clinton County accident that occurred around 10:30pm but he was found by state police in the area a short time later. Furl refused a blood test and was taken into custody.
PHONE JAMMING BILL FOR PRISON CONTRABAND INTRODUCED IN CONGRESS
A bipartisan coalition to deploy phone jamming systems in prisons was recently introduced in Congress after 26 state attorneys general signed a letter urging the change. According to a press release, a study about contraband phone use in prisons shows that incarcerated individuals continue their criminal activities while behind bars and that a federal law currently bans states from using cell phone jamming technology. A 2020 survey of 20 state corrections departments uncovered 25,840 contraband cell phones in a single year. The legislation would not impact individuals’ usage of landline phones at prisons.
SENIOR FILM SCREENING AT COMMUNITY ARTS CENTER
Lycoming College is holding their annual Senior Film Screening at the Community Arts Center in downtown Williamsport on April 10th starting at 7pm According to North Central PA dot com, the free event will show student-made thesis films with no reservations or tickets necessary. Four films by local film and video arts seniors will be screened for the event. Featured work is by students from Williamsport, Bellefonte, Danville and Broadheadsville.
