MAN IN CUSTODY FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, RESISTING ARREST
A Lock Haven man is in custody after a domestic incident led to him resisting arrest last week at a home on East Water Street. According to officers who responded to the scene, 35 year old Charles Eugene Berry Jr allegedly threatened his mother outside the residence about 8:30am on March 16th where a neighbor witnessed the exchange. When officers attempted to take Berry into custody, he headbutted an officer and allegedly grabbed their gun from the holster while they tried to secure and handcuff him. Berry faces aggravated assault, disarming law enforcement, and resisting arrest charges and is in Clinton County in lieu of 15 thousand dollars monetary bail.
10 YEAR OLD VICTIM IN FATAL ATV ACCIDENT
Pennsylvania State police have not yet released the identity of the 10 year old who died in an ATV accident in Union County Saturday. According to State police at Milton, the child was from Racine, Wisconsin and was riding along Red Bank Road, West Buffalo Township at about 2:30pm before the deadly crash. Authorities have not released information on what led to the crash. The Montour County Coroner was on the scene along with Mifflinburg Ambulance, Reliance Ambulance, William Cameron Ambulance and Geisinger Life Flight.
YAW ADDRESSES FLOOD CLEAN-UP PERMITTING
Two bills addressing stream maintenance and giving counties and municipalities greater flexibility in handling obstructions and flood-related hazards in local waterways, have been approved by the State Senate. According to Sen. Gene Yaw who sponsored the measures, Senate Bill 403 and 404 allows for local government organizations to apply for a permit for continuing maintenance for a period of at least 10 years for local streams, and would allow counties to opt-in to address hazards by allowing for emergency maintenance permits. Yaw said Tropical Storm Debby was hindered by an inefficient permitting process by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. The bills now move to the House of Representatives for consideration.
EARTH DAY IN SUNBURY
An inaugural Earth Day celebration is planned for April 19th in Sunbury. According to the Daily Item, volunteers from the Climate Reality Project: Susquehanna Valley PA chapter and the Save our Susquehanna group, invite the public to experience educational activities, and learn about local conservation initiatives at Cameron Park from 10am til 2pm. There will be environmental vendors, family friendly games and earth day activities including an interactive photo booth to bring the beauty of the Susquehanna River to the Park. Sunbury Mayor Josh Brosious said he will issue a proclamation to ensure the event will become a staple in the city.
DOG ALERTS FAMILY TO FIRE PROMPTING THEIR ESCAPE
A family in Eldred Township escaped a fire safely Tuesday night after their dog alerted them to the fire that broke out in their home. According to the Sun Gazette, the fire of unknown origin erupted after 11pm and Murphy, the family dog made sure the five people got out of the blaze, the embers of which allegedly started some small brush fires across the street that were quickly put out. Firefighters from Eldred, Loyalsock, Hepburn, Old Lycoming and Woodward, Plunketts Creek responded and were assisted by crews from Montoursville, and DuBoistown, Jersey Shore and Nisbet. The displaced family have relatives who are assisting them.
MONTGOMERY COUNCIL MEMBER WILL NOT FACE JAILTIME
An attorney for Joshua Geiger, a Montgomery Borough Council member, reached a deal with the Lycoming County District Attorney’s office for alleged child sex crimes for which he was arrested in December of 2023. According to the Sun Gazette, the victim said Geiger was intoxicated when he touched her inappropriately but told the court she thinks his eyes were closed and didn’t know who he was touching before she left the room. The defense said the incident was an unfortunate event not a crime. District Judge Kirsten Garden agreed to withdraw unlawful contact with a minor and corruption of minors charges and put Geiger on accelerated rehabilitative disposition for disorderly conduct, serve probation for 24 months and make payments of fees and court costs. Charges can be refiled if Geiger breaches the agreement.
30-DAY BURN BAN FOR MONTOUR COUNTY
An official burn ban has been put into effect in Montour County for 30 days. According to Commissioner Trevor Finn, they have imposed a restriction on outdoor burning despite the recent rain and hope within the 30 day period the area will green up with less dry leaves and grass as fuel for wildfires. State police have been asked to more stringently enforce the burning restriction which is in place to save lives and property.
MIDD-WEST STUDENTS WIN REGIONALLY IN PENNDOT CONTEST
A four member team at Midd-West High school will compete in the Regional Innovations Challenge, a PennDOT competition aimed at creating solutions for real-world transportation challenges. According to a press release at pa.gov, James Devine, Keaton Kreider, Jasmine Williams, and Kylie Brown led by mentors Matt Dietz and Kathy Shellenberger created a regional coloring contest featuring a seat belt superhero character named “Captain Buckles”. The regional Challenge winners will present their solutions to a panel of judges in April, who will then determine a statewide winner. Get more details at penndot.pa.gov/District3.
