CLINTON TOWNSHIP FIRE WEDNESDAY EVENING
A large fire in Clinton Township destroyed a two-story 40×60 barn yesterday afternoon just after 5pm. According to the Sun Gazette, the fire could be seen over 5 miles from the property near Muncy at 5680 Route 405. According to Township Fire Chief Todd Winder there were explosions within the barn caused by propane tanks and tires, but that the origin of the fire was open burning in windy conditions that caused the fire to spread to the structure. A quarter acre of brush, two cars and a farm tractor were also engulfed by the flames that a dozen fire companies on the scene worked to control. They used 3000 feet of hose to use water from a branch of the Susquehanna River, ands continued to fight hot spots through the evening.
FATAL ACCIDENT ON I-80 NEAR BLOOMSBURG
A man from Nescopeck died in a car crash last Friday along I-80 west at the Lightstreet exit. According to the Montour County Coroner’s Office 62 year old David Fuller who may have had an underlying medical condition, was transported after the accident to Geisinger Danville where he died the next day as a result of his injuries. State police at Bloomsburg say Fuller attempted to pass a box truck but struck it with the rear of his vehicle, and he spun out from the impact. The victim’s daughter was his passenger, but only suffered minor injuries
BURN BAN IN SUNBURY
City officials have announced a burn ban in Sunbury through at least April 1st due to the current dry conditions and recent incidents involving burning within the city. According to the Daily Item, after a request from fire department Chief Jay Long says there have been multiple close calls with open burning and asked council to reevaluate the existing burn ban ordinance. Fire officials say that in a typical year, the department averages 20-25 incidents involving residential burning.
STUDENTS WIN AT ODYSSEY OF THE MIND REGIONALS
A team of fourth- and fifth-grade Montoursville students recently secured a place in the Odyssey of the Mind state competition which is coming up next month at Pocono Mountain School District’s East Campus. According to North Central PA dot com, the team, nicknamed “Fast & Curious” are a group of problem-solvers who earned a first-place finish during the North Central PA Odyssey of the Mind Regional Competition March 1st. The team spent this year designing a solution to their selected “problem” which they then present at competitions. They now have a chance to qualify for the World Finals at Michigan State University in late May. More information at ncpaodyssey.org.
MAN CHARGED WITH ANIMAL CRUELTY
Police are seeking the whereabouts of a Millheim man who allegedly killed his dog with a shotgun March 6th. According to North Central PA dot com, 38 year old Nicholas Richart who lived in a camper with several dogs, told the landowner that he shot the dog because people were after him, before he packed his car and left. Police who investigated at the scene found the deceased animal with a gunshot to its eye with blood and shotgun shells nearby. Richart was charged with aggravated cruelty to animals causing death, but has not yet been taken into custody.
WOMAN IN COURT OVER 2023 THEFT
A former Lycoming County woman was in court this week in Williamsport facing charges that she stole from a disabled city woman when she was her care-giver in February of 2023. According ot the Sun Gazette, Ashley Sherrece Thompson who now resides in Philadelphia, allegedly used the Paypal account of her client and stole over 500 dollars along with 200 dollars in cash from the home. Thomson was arraigned this week on five counts of access device fraud and one count of theft. She posted 15 thousand dollars bail.
FOSTER CARE INFORMATIONAL ZOOM CALL A virtual information session is taking place today for families interested in learning more about foster care. NEW LOCK HAVEN BENCHES INSTALLED THIS WEEK
As part of a fundraising initiative created by Lock Haven’s planning department, public works employees began placing 27 new benches at various locations up and down East Main Street from Jay Street to Triangle Park this week. According to the Lock Haven Express, the Central Mountain High School Construction Trades class have assisted with building a portion of the benches and the city’s public works staff have created the remainder. Plaques recognizing the donor were also created by Central Mountain’s Precision Machining Class. City Planner Abbey Roberts said that before summer of 2026, the benches will be completed, after the wood dries out properly to absorb the paint and stain planned for the benches. Pinch-N-Poke Tattoo Studio; the Clinton County Arts Council; and Downtown Lock Haven, Inc. are developing a painting program for a select number of benches. Benches can be sponsored for $350 and include the cost of a custom plaque.
