DNA EVIDENCE LEADS TO ARREST OF MILLVILLE MAN
DNA from a cigarette butt led police to arrest a Millville man suspected of stealing a truck, and burglarizing a home and another nearby vehicle. According to North Central PA dot com, police say a victim reported that his Ford Ranger pickup truck was missing from his driveway on Red Haven Drive in Monroe Township during the overnight hours of March 31st of last year. Two other victims came forward reporting thefts in that same timeframe. After the truck was recovered in the Bloomsburg area and searched, police tested the cigarette found in the cab and determined 29 year old Collyn James Drake is the suspect who police say was also seen on surveillance video on the Snyder County property where the crimes took place. Drake was charged with felony theft, burglary, identity theft and more and awaits a preliminary hearing April 21st. His bail was set at 50 thousand dollars.
MAN CHARGED FOR RAPE OF NINE YEAR OLD
A man from Mifflinburg was charged with 6 felony counts of rape of a child under the age of 16 and other sexual assault charges along with child endangerment after Milton State Police received a ChildLine Referral from the Union County District Attorney’s office. According to the Daily Item, 52 year old Melvin Casey Ross allegedly assaulted the 9 year old victim in August of 2024 at his residence on Dice Road in Limestone Township last summer in Sunbury. Ross said he knew the girl’s mother and picked the girl up but denied any sexual contact. He was jailed in lieu of 50 thousand dollars bail and has a preliminary hearing at 9:30 a.m. March 25th.
OPIOID DEATHS DECLINE IN PENNSYLVANIA
Opioid related deaths have declined in Pennsylvania. According to a new analysis from data collected by the CDC, opioid fatalities in the state dropped 16% between mid-2023 and mid-2024. Officials say Pennsylvania reports the second-largest decline in the United States behind North Carolina. Overall, Pennsylvania’s opioid death rate fell from 31.1 deaths per 100,000 residents to 22.1, marking a nearly 29% decrease.
HUNTING BILL REINTRODUCED IN HARRISBURG
A Sunday hunting bill has been reintroduced in Harrisburg that might repeal the ban that drives hunters from the commonwealth to other states some weekends. According to the Sun Gazette, Senate Bill 67 was reintroduced by lawmakers after it gained preliminary approval in the House of Representatives before time ran out in the legislative session last year. Support for the measure comes from the Pa Farm bureau and officials from the PA Game Commission which could allow them to include Sundays when establishing hunting seasons annually going forward.
FEDERAL PRISON FOR POSSESSING, SENDING CHILD PORN
A Clinton County man was sentenced to nine years in federal prison after his indictment for receipt and possession of child pornography. According to the Sun Gazette, FBI agents served a warrant for 24 year old Felix Trepanowski last May, seizing his cell phone and computer where they found over 2 thousand pornographic images received between 20022 and 2024. The case was brought about as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
GARAGE FIRE IN SUBURY SUNDAY
There was a garage fire in Sunbury that brought multiple firefighters to the scene on Sunday afternoon. According to the Daily Item, a motorist called in the fire after witnessing smoke from the burning building in the 500 block of Line Street while driving along 6th Street. Fire departments from Sunbury, Northumberland, Point Township, Shamokin Dam, Selinsgrove and Mahoning Township arrived at the scene just after 1:30pm and officials said there were no occupants of the two-story garage and no injuries were reported. The fire was determined to be accidental and the structrure reportedly has heavy smoke and water damage.
VOTERS GUIDE DEADLINE APPROACHING
The deadline is approaching for candidates who want to be included in the Union County Voters Guide for the May 20th Municipal primary. According to the Standard Journal all candidates whose names appear on the ballot are automatically included in the guide with write-in candidates considered for inclusion if they meet certain legal qualifications; as well as have a funding base or the endorsement of a major party with written documentation. ALCOHOL FREE EVENT FOR THOSE IN RECOVERY
An alcohol free trivia night for the month of March will be hosted by Susquehanna Valley Mediation’s Families in Recovery program. According to North Central PA dot com, Recovery Trivia Night will be Sunday evening March 29th at the CommUnity Zone in Lewisburg. Form teams with other individuals at the venue or bring friends and family members to compete for prizes. Program administrators say the fun event fun helps connect those in recovery with other people on the same journey.
