FORMER WASD PRINCIPAL ACQUITTED
After an initial deadlock, a Lycoming County jury found former Williamsport High School principal, Roger Weaver Freed not guilty of 25 counts of institutional sexual assault, and one count of corruption of minors. According to the Sun Gazette, after a four day trial the jury received instructions from Judge Eric Linhardt that they could not find Freed guilty of corruption of minors if they did not find him guilty of institutional sex assault and around 9pm the not guilty verdict was returned. Freed did not take the stand during the trial.
COUPLE CHARGED WITH ENDANGERMENT
Two people from Kulpmont were charged with child endangerment from an incident Christmas Eve in which an autistic 8 year old allegedly pushed his 4 year old brother from a second floor window. According to the News Item 32 year old Ann Marie Travitz, and her boyfriend 57 year old Joseph David Bowers were in the home at1049 Pine St around 8:30am December 24th but were accused of not supervising the 4 year-old. Trawitz told police that the 8 year old came to her to tell her the boy fell. The victim was injured and transported to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.
NEW VOTER DATABASE COMING FOR PA
Pennsylvania is set to replace its electronic voter registration database, replacing the existing Statewide Uniform Registry of Electors, or SURE system. According to WTAE in Pittsburgh, the Civix system is an election management system that will also provide election night results and handle campaign finance filings and lobbyist registration. State lawmakers said the Civix system should be fully in use by the time of the next presidential election in 2028, and will provide the public with information about voter registration, coming elections and voting data
NEW PRESIDENT AT LYCOMING COLLEGE
After a National search, The Lycoming College Board of Trustees have named Dr. of Education Charles “Chip” Edmonds to the presidency of the college following the recent announcement that current president, Kent Trachte, will retire in June. College officials say they considered 107 applicants for the position, but that Dr. Edmonds who is the current executive vice president at Lycoming College is the right candidate, who possesses a unique combination of experience, commitment to tradition and a vision for the future. His role as president begins July 1st.
WOMAN CHARGED ARFTER THREATENING STUDENT
Charges against a Williamsport woman accused of threatening a student and their friends have been waived for court this week after her preliminary hearing. According to the Sun Gazette, police say 44 year old Rhonesia S. Brooks sent threatening messages to a student involved in a fight with her young relative whose parent then contacted police on February 27th. Brooks was jailed before she posted 30 thousand dollars bail using surety bonds. Her formal arraignment is March 24th, but is also facing separate charges including possession of firearm prohibited , terroristic threats and more with a pre-trial hearing for those charges coming up March 17th.
NISBET WOMAN FOUND NOT GUILTY
A Nisbet woman was acquitted by a jury of embezzling over 180 thousand dollars from the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 145 following a three-day trial in Lycoming County Court. According to the Sun Gazette, Tammy Lynne Harris was charged with several theft and receiving stolen property charges in November of 2021, after a forensic audit showed she had misappropriated funds between December of 2016, through June of 2017 while she was both the lodge’s social quarters manager and administrative clerk. The former governor of the lodge, John Dunkelberger testified for the prosecution that Harris, held the keys to the skill games and made large purchases during the dates in question. The defense said the charges were based in speculation.
PENNDOT REVEALS 2025 SCHEDULE
PennDOT administrators revealed their schedule for 2025 infrastructure road upgrades and replacement projects in District 3 yesterday in an online presentation. According to Eric High, district executive for District 3, the costs are projected at 302 million dollars for projects in nine counties including Lycoming, Northumberland, Snyder and Union including funding for the CSVT Project. Of the 109 projects planned, 51 are bridge projects, including upgrades and replacements. They also reported that that prior traffic counts on the new river bridge are at 16,000 vehicles a day, with roughly 30 percent less traffic on Route 15 just south of Lewisburg.
BINGO FUNDRAISER FOR CAMP VICTORY
