FUGITIVE WANTED FOR MURDER OF 15 YEAR-OLD IN CUSTODY
The young man wanted by state police for his alleged role in murdering a 15-year-old at a Loyalsock restaurant a year ago was taken into custody yesterday around 11am in Milton. According to North Central PA dot com, 18 year old Ja’hsir Legare was apprehended by the U.S. Marshals Middle District of Pennsylvania Violent Crimes Fugitive Task Force and was handed over to the Pennsylvania State Police in Montoursville. Legare had a warrant out for his arrest after he allegedly fled the scene March 2, 2024 after the incident at E 3rd Street restaurant in Loyalsock Township. Legare was in court to be arraigned on his charges; homicide, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm by a minor.
CRITICALLY INJURED INMATE IDENTIFIED
The inmate who was seriously injured after a fall from a bunk bed at the Clinton County Prison has been identified as Travis Short, a 34 year old man from Beavertown. According to the Daily item, Short suffered a brain hemorrhage when he fell from his bed while being housed as an inmate. Prison officials say they are investigating the incident, but no foul play is suspected. Clinton County agreed last year to house 40 Snyder County inmates as a cost saving move.
DOGE CLOSING OFFICES IN PA TO SAVE LEASE MONEY
The Department of Government Efficiency is slated to close 24 offices in Pennsylvania including Williamsport’s Geological Survey and the Employment Standards administration Wage and Hour division and US Fish and wildlife Service in State College. According to the DOGE website, the closures are part of cost cutting measures in Real Estate by terminating leases across the country adding up to $468M in lease savings. A Philadelphian DHS United States Secret Service office. Centre County officials say they are awaiting news on what employees should do, whether they will be laid off, transferred, or work from home offices.
REAL ID HELP IN SELINSGORVE NEXT WEEK
A REAL ID event will be held in Selinsgrove next week for residents to get help before the federal deadline May 7th. According to PennDOT, REAL ID or another federally accepted form of identification will be required for domestic flights and certain federal facilities, however, no REAL ID is necessary for jury duty entry or appointments at Social Security offices. PennDOT will open select centers Monday including the Selinsgrove Driver License Center next week from 10a to 2pm. Applicants should bring specific documents, and a one-time fee applies.
MAN IN CUSTODY OVER DOMESTIC DISTURBANCE
A Williamsport man remains in custody after his preliminary hearing this week over a domestic disturbance in which he dragged and kicked a woman inside his home on Dewey Avenue on February 24th. According to the Sun Gazette, 42 year old James Harer threatened to kill the victim and injured her by allegedly kicking her in the face before he fled from the home prior to police arriving at the scene. The woman was taken to UPMC Williamsport and was treated for her injuries. Police arrested Harer the next day and charged him with terroristic threats, endangerment, simple assault and harassment. Harer has been held for court on all charges with his bail is set at 20 thousand dollars
SOME ASSAULT CHARGES DROPPED AGAINST WILLIAMSPORT MAN
Some sexual assault charges were dismissed yesterday against 22-year-old Nicholas Peterson who was jailed in December who still faces 19 charges, including aggravated indecent assault, corrupting the morals of a minor and more. Police allege the minor victim says Peterson provided her with alcohol and marijuana for sexual favors over several months. Peterson will have his formal arraignment next week in Williamsport and remains jailed on no bail.
LOCAL HOSPITAL UPGRADES SECURITY IN WAKE OF YORK SHOOTING
After a shooting at at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York on February 22nd, WellSpan campuses and facilities, including WellSpan Evangelical Community Hospital in Lewisburg have upgraded its security protocols. According to the Daily Item, administrators from WellSpan say the health system’s Strongline program was implemented last week, which is a notification system connecting security officers and teams so they can quickly diffuse potential harmful scenarios and help improve workplace safety. Last month officers shot and killed the armed suspect who held hostages at the York facility where 30 year old West York Patrolman Andrew Duarte was fatally shot.
RESPASZ BAND BUILDING AN ENDOWMENT FUND
A new endowment fund to help support Williamsport’s world-famous Repasz Band was recently established to help cover expenses to the group can continue to share their music during free local concerts. According to North Central PA dot com, Repasz director Jeff Dent says expenses have increased so the endowment fund is to establish a strong base for future projects, enabling them to expand programming and develop new levels of musical performances. Local music enthusiasts and donors have already added over 100 thousand dollars to the fund. Tax deductible contributions can be sent to 117 West Hills Drive in Williamsport.
