PA WOMAN IN CUSTODY FOR ARSON IN NEW JERSEY
A Montgomery woman has been charged with eluding police and aggravated arson in New Jersey from several incidents on February 19th. According to a Surf City police, 29 year old Juliette Tournier was stopped by police about 8:20pm of February 19th for having a stolen license plate, but fled the scene. Aftrer an investigation, police determined Tournier was a suspect in a residence fire in Surf City that was suspected to be arson. She surrendered herself to the Surf City Police Department last Wednesday and is incarcerated in the Ocean County Jail.
ANOTHER TRIAL FOT FORMER WASD PRINCIPAL
Another jury has been chosen this week for former Williamsport Area High School principal Roger Freed who is accused of having a sexual relationship with a former student. According to the Sun Gazette, Freed was originally charged in 2022 with 30 counts of indecent sexual contact with a student, assault charges and other misdemeanors with some charges now dropped over the expiration of the statute of limitations. The victim in the case was on the stand yesterday and cross examinations is schedule to continue today.
SOME PA CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS TARGETED BY DOGE
The Department of Government Efficiency has requested the employees at Lewisburg and Allenwood penitentiaries to provide examples of job accomplishments or risk losing their jobs according to a directive. According to the Daily Item, the Bureau of Prisons has recommended employees not respond, however, union officials of LSCI Allenwood Local 306 advised employees to comply with the directive. Correctional institutions in the region have been plagued working under difficult conditions, including low pay and short-staffing. New York Prisons just returned to work last week after an unauthorized strike. Allenwood’s staffing at 71 percent, with 118 vacant officer positions
TROUT UNLIMITED HOSTS FORMER PFBC DIRECTOR FOR TALK
The former PA Fish and Boat Commission executive director, John Arway will be the speaker at the next meeting of the Trout Unlimited Susquehanna Chapter on March 12th. According to the Sun Gazette, Arway will talk on his 30 year career with the commission that began as a fisheries biologist. IN addition, the meeting will feature PA Fish and Boat Commissioner Eric Hussar and Lycoming County waterways conservation officer Hunter Shoemaker will provide updates and take questions at the Covenant Central Presbyterian Church on West 4th Street in Williamsport next Wednesday at 7pm. FUNERAL EMPLOYEE ARRESTED FOR TOMBSTONE SCAM
A Johnstown man who was working for a Snyder County funeral home has been jailed for illegally selling tombstones to customers in 2023 and never installing them. According to the Daily Item, 50 year old Rodney B. Gressley was an employee of George P. Garman Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant Mills when he allegedly charged multiple victims thousands of dollars for tombstones that were not delivered. Gressley’s employer terminated him after they found out about the scam and reimbursed two victims. Gressely faces four counts each of felony theft by deception and deceptive business practices and is incarcerated in lieu of 20 thousand dollars bail.
SOME CHARGES DROPPED FOR WOMAN WHO LEFT CHILD IN CAR
Felony charges were dropped against a Lewisburg woman who left her 5 year old child sleeping in a car seat in December while she attended a concert at Bucknell University. According to the Daily Item , the court withdrew the felony count of endangering the welfare of a child for 41 year old Qing Jiang, but bound a misdemeanor count of reckless endangerment and a summary account of leaving an unattended child in a motor vehicle over in Union County Court. A Bucknell Public Safety Officer filed the original charges. Jiang is scheduled for a formal arraignment on May 5th.
MARCH IS GAMBLING AWARNESS MONTH
A kick-off for National Problem Gambling Awareness Month for March was last week in Harrisburg. According to the Secretary for the Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs, this kick-off celebrates the event’s 22nd anniversary designed to increase public awareness of the availability of treatment and recovery services and encourage health care providers to screen their service recipients for gambling addictions. Officials from Pennsylvania Lottery say they provide funding for the helpline, 1-800-GAMBLER, to promote responsible play and proved relief from problem gambling.
