HOUSEFIRE IN AVIS
Multiple fire companies assisted at the scene of a house fire in Avis Wednesday morning. According to the Sun Gazette, the residents at 307 Grove Street, a man and woman, were displaced, but were not home at the time the blaze broke out in the basement area of the home. Firefighters arrived to smoke pouring from the house and entered the structure, containing the blaze within about 20 minutes. Crews from Jersey Shore, Lock Haven, Dunnstown, Woolrich and Antes Forte were on the scene. A state fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
COUNTY MAY NOT MANAGE LANDFILL IN THE FUTURE
Lycoming County commissioners are considering a move away from managing the Lycoming County Landfill located south of Williamsport, PA on Route 15 in Brady Township. According to Penn Live, county commissioners are considering an exit from the facility by hiring a management firm to improve its profitability, creating an authority or selling it altogether. Financial directors from the county say the landfill has been running a cash deficit since 2022 and that the recycling program has not been successful. No word on a timeline for a decision.
HEART HEALTH SCREENING FOR TEENS SATURDAY IN DANVILLE
Youth ages 12 to 19 are able to get a free potentially life-saving heart screening on February 15 at Danville High School. According to media outlets, the event is sponsored by the Alyssa Dressler Foundation, a non-profit that honors the memory of a Selinsgrove 14 year old student who passed away from Sudden Cardiac arrest in 2015. The screening is for youth who are not under a cardiologists care presently can get a vitals check, heart murmur check, and an EKG this Saturday starting at 9am. SPEED LIMIT IS RESTORED AFTER STORM
PennDOT has lifted the speed limit and right-lane-only commercial vehicle restrictions that were in place on several roadways in the region. Due to the winter storm impacting the region, speed limits were reduced to 45 mph on Interstates 80 and 180 in the region. All speeds are restored to their usual posted limits. PennDOT is continuing to treat roadways in the area and will continue until roads are clear.
CAR CRASH INJURED TWO IN STRONG
Two people were injured in a two car crash Wednesday in Strong at the intersection of state Route 61 and South School Street just before 5pm. According to the News Item, Mount Carmel Township Fire officials responded to the crash and found two adults in a Jeep that had sustained moderate front-end damage along with a white GMC Acadia that had extensive damage from the wreck. AREA Services transported the two victims to Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital. Crews cleaned up the fuel spill while Rt 61 traffic was detoured. Mount Carmel Township police are investigating the wreck.
THREE FOUND GUILTY FOR DECADES LONG MUSEUM HEISTS
Three men from Eastern PA have been found guilty in a 20 year string of museum heists following a four-week jury trial in US District Court. According to the US Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, Nicholas Dombek, Damien Boland, and Joseph Atsus, of Thornhurst, Moscow, and Roaring Brook respectively, broke into multiple museums in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and North Dakota over the past 20 years and stole priceless works of art, sports memorabilia, and other objects, destroying them by melting down gold and other precious metals or selling items to fences in New York. Gems minerals, artwork and sports rings were among the items taken. Court records say Dombek also burned the painting “Upper Hudson” by Jasper Cropsey worth 500 thousand dollars to avoid it being found. Sentencing has yet to be scheduled.
NO HORSEBACK RIDING IN TURTLE CREEK PARK
After a public meeting with township supervisors, it has been determined that horseback riding is now prohibited at Turtle Creek Park in East Buffalo Township. According to the Daily Item, after local riders used the trails at the township-owned property west of Route 15 near Supplee Mill and Furnace Roads, there was damage detected and manure left on the walking trails that caused issues for other guests at the park. The supervisors said that the prohibition of riding will be in place until they can come up with a specific trail plan for that purpose. Prior agreements to use Turtle Creek Park for riding called for township approval for parties who wanted to use the facilities – but that was not happening. Signs reflecting the new policy will be placed in the park.
BEWARE OF FAKE PA TURNPIKE EMAILS
There are reports of another email and text scam to worry about – this time, through the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission. According to the Sun Gazette, residents are warned about emails being sent that demand tolls be paid that contain links to a fraudulent collection agency seemingly working for the PA Turnpike . If you receive an unsolicited text or email about toll payment, you can file a complaint online at ic3.gov and check your EZ pass account during business hours by calling 1-877-736-6727.
