RESTAURANT FIRE IN LOYALSOCK TOWNSHIP
A fire broke out at the Long John Silver’s on East Third Street in Loyalsock Township last night just 15 minutes after the restaurant closed for the night. According to the Sun Gazette, firefighters from Loyalsock Township, Montoursville, South Williamsport, Old Lycoming Township and others were called to the scene and arrived to smoke pouring from the eaves of the building. The Golden Strip was shut down while crews worked to control the fire by about 10pm. No word on the cause of the fire at this time
FATAL ACCIDENT IN VALLEY TOWNSHIP
A Bloomsburg woman died in a car crash on I-80 yesterday in Valley Township. According to State police at Milton, Marlene Butters was traveling westbound on the interstate when her car left the roadway for an unknown reason in Montour County and crossed the median, striking a tractor trailer in the highway’s eastbound lane. Police say Butters was ejected from her Dodge Ram and dies at the scene. No word on any injuries suffered by the truck driver.
MONTGOMERY COACH WAS NOT FIRED
A recent social media uproar over the speculation that Montgomery Area School District head varsity football coach, Cory Tice, was fired, has been debunked after the school Superintendent Daphne Bowers commented publicly on the matter. According to the Sun Gazette, Montgomery school officials say that Tice, who coached winning seasons from 2023 through 2025 was not fired, but completed his contract and was paid. Bowers says the board decided to open the positions to new applicants this year and that the policy of the process of personnel matters is not public material. A resident who submitted a right to know request over the meeting minutes about handling coaching contracts was denied since there were no documents about the matter in question according to a request denial notice.
MONTOUR REC LOOKING FOR SUMMER INTERN
An intern is being sought and interviews are being scheduled for interested persons looking to work with the Montour Area Recreation Commission this summer. According to the Daily Item, duties for the internship include park and trail maintenance, project and event management, project design and permitting as well as project field research, mapping and promotion. The job is May 12th through August 10th and a stipend is available at the completion of the internship. COUPLE FROM COGAN HOUSE TOWNSHIP FOUND DECEASED
Two elderly people from Cogan House Township were found deceased on Wednesday afternoon and police are investigating. According to Pennsylvania State police at Montoursville, they were called about 3:30pm February 5th to a location along Post Road in Lycoming County where the bodies of a 68 year old woman and a 72 year old man were found. Following an initial investigation, troopers say there is no threat to the public and when more information is available they will provide it.
MAN ON MUSHROOMS SLAPS PARAMEDIC
A man who had taken hallucinogenic mushrooms and was having a bad reaction assaulted a paramedic after they were called to the Dove Street residence on January 26th. According to North Central PA dot com, witnesses say Zade Michael Short ate 3 grams of the drug and was unaware of the date or where he was. Zade’s girlfriend gave police the remainder of the mushrooms that Short had at the home. Police say he yelled and swore at officers who were there to evaluate him and then slapped the Susquehanna Regional EMS paramedic across the face
MEETING TO DISCUSS BLIGHT IN SUNBURY
In a process to gather input from local officials and experts to help develop new legislation aimed at fighting blight in Sunbury, the state senate’s Majority Policy Committee will visit Sunbury next week to discuss new strategies. According to Sen. Lynda Schlegel Culver, they will host the hearing taking place Monday 10 til noon at the Northumberland County Administration Center. Property owner Meghan Black, along with Pat Mack of the Northumberland County Housing Authority and others involved in housing and economic development will testify at the event that will be livestreamed.
RENT REBATE PROGRAM OPEN FOR APPLICANTS
Eligible individuals ages 65 and over; widows and widowers age 50 and over; and people with disabilities age 18 and over can apply for Pennsylvania’s 2024 Property Tax/Rent Rebate program. According to North Central PA dot com, the income limit for this year is $46,520 for homeowners and renters, with 50% of Social Security or railroad retirement income excluded from the amount. State Rep. Martin Causer is offering free onsite assistance at the Bradford, Coudersport, and Kane offices and will host a series of clinics to help people apply throughout February and March.
