CLINTON TOWNSHIP FIRE TUESDAY
Fire officials in Clinton Township extinguished a mobile home fire around 7pm Tuesday night and rescued three cats from the smoke filled structure. According to the Sun Gazette, fire officials say a space heater placed too close to flammable items was the cause of the fire, but they put it out within minutes of arriving at the Route 53 residence. The victim of the fire, Sharonda Hartford, escaped the blaze and was not injured, but she is temporarily displaced from her home.
SUNBURY VAN DRIVER CITED FOR LEAVING A CHILD BEHIND
A Sunbury school van driver is facing charges after a child was left inside his parked vehicle on October 3rd in 75 degree weather. According to police, 66 year-old Joshua Donald Stutzman said he checked the van for students after dropping off school children for the day, but the child was left behind and pounded on the windows in an attempt to get someone’s attention so he could exit. The boy did get out of the vehicle and contacted his mother with the phone of the person who helped him. Stutzman has been charged with misdemeanor endangering the welfare of children and his preliminary hearing is February 11.
GOVERNOR VISITS POLICE HEADQUARTERS IN LOCK HAVEN
Pennsylvania Governor, Josh Shapiro, was in Lock Haven Wednesday as part of a statewide tour about public safety and supporting law enforcement. According to the Sun Gazette, Shapiro met with officials from Lock Haven, including the police chief and mayor at the Lock Haven Police Headquarters and discussed the funds made available that support the Lock Haven Police Department. About 14 thousand dollars of funding came from the Pennsylvania Crime and Delinquency Commission; other grants allowed the hiring of 800 new Pennsylvania state troopers and 500 new municipal police – filling 1,500 vacant law enforcement positions in local communities.
PHOTO CONTEST TO FOCUS ON LITTER
A “Lens on Litter” Photo Contest has been announced for 2025. It’s a way for amateur photographers to be recognized for unusual or eye-catching images of litter across the Commonwealth. According to the PA Environment Digest, the Pennsylvania Resources Council began the photo contest to raise awareness to how litter threatens public health and safety, scenic beauty, property values, the environment and wildlife. Photos will be judged on their anti-litter message, originality, photographic technique and more, with a top prize of 500 dollars will be awarded in each category for adults and students. A before and after photo category has been added, sponsored by Keep PA Beautiful. The deadline for submission is October 2025. Get details at prc.org.
COUPLE CHARGED AFTER TODDLER SICKENED BY THC
Two people are facing felony counts of child endangerment after a 2 year old in their care overdosed on THC. According to the Standard Journal 26-year-old Caleb Kessler of Mifflinburg, and 25-year-old Alexis Clinger of Middleburg are being sought by police this week after police and first responders arrived at the couple’s home where the toddler was found with a low body temperature, bruises, and swelling around his eye. Kessler admitted to police that he gave the child a melatonin gummy before he became unresponsive. Hospital officials say the boy was found to be suffering from acute encephalopathy caused by a THC overdose.
CAR THIEVES SMASH WINDOW AT DEALERSHIP
More than one thief was seen on surveillance cameras damaging a car window in order to steal it from a Kelly Township dealership. According to North Central PA dot com, unknown suspects smashed the sunroof of a 2025 Dodge Durango before they allegedly used software to mimic the key fob, so they could start the car and drive it off the Blaise Alexander lot on January 4th. Police say the incident occurred around 11pm at the dealership on Westbranch Highway. If you have information about the theft or the suspects, call state police at Milton at 570-524-2662.
RECREATION GRANT APPLICATIONS OPEN JANUARY 21
Thanks to the Community Conservation Partnerships Program, eligible organizations interested in applying for conservation, recreation, trail and riparian buffer grants can do so starting January 21st. According to Senator Gene Yaw, the funding is in place to help improve and preserve local recreational areas for future generations. Applications will be accepted through April 2nd. There are online tutorials are available at DCNR dot pa dot gov that provides information about the application process.
PERCUSSION LOW BRASS NEEDED FOR SELINSGROVE BAND
Musicians are being sought for the Selinsgrove Adult Band as they prepare for a spring concert coming in March at the Selinsgrove Middle School to benefit the American Cancer Society. According to the Daily Item, the band’s new director Liza Smith is looking for percussionists and low brass players, including those who play the tuba, trombone and baritone. The group hasn’t had a concert for several years, but has been practicing as a group for decades. Smith says the weekly practices are Tuesday nights and those interested can email her lsmith@seal-pa.org
