WILLIAMSPORT COUPLE FACING DRUG CHARGES
Two people from Williamsport are facing jail time after they are accused of selling cocaine to confidential informants over several months. According to North Central PA dot com, John Allen and Vanessa Jo Snyder were recorded by informants performing the drug transactions with surveillance devices at several locations around Lycoming county including the dollar store on West 4th Street, a gas station and at their home, where police investigated and allegedly found illegal firearms on the premises. Allen is being charged with delivery of a controlled substance, possession of a firearm and more and is free on $75,000 unsecured bail. Snyder is being charged with delivery of a controlled substance and conspiracy to deliver a controlled substance with no bail listed.
WOMAN IN COURT THIS WEEK FOR 2019 THEFT IN WILLIAMSPORT
An illegal immigrant from Chile who was part of a crime ring, waived her preliminary hearing this week on felony charges of theft by deception and access device fraud from 2019 after she allegedly stole a woman’s purse from a Basin Street shop in Williamsport and tried to use the stolen credit cards at the Best Buy in Muncy. According to the Sun Gazette 32 year old Constanza Baltra Moreno remains in custody in lieu of 15 thousand dollars bail in Lancaster County on other criminal charges against her.
GRANT MONEY FOR AI GUN DETECTIOJN SYSTEM AT SWASD
South Williamsport Area School Board has approved a plan to use grant money that will begin a one year pilot program using AI firearm detection in the school building. According to the Sun Gazette, a Pennsylvania-based company called Zero Eyes will provide software that links to existing cameras in the district which will spot firearms that are held by potential perpetrators within fractions of a second, and then notify law enforcement. The fee for the year of Zero Eyes is 82,000 dollars which will be provided by a grant from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD). The program is already in 500 school districts across the country and was developed in 2018 following the February 14th shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, which killed 17 people. The installation will start February 1st.
GRANT TO PROVIDE HYGEINE PRODUCTS FOR THREE COUNTIES
A grant from International Paper in Mount Carmel will allow the distribution of essential hygiene products to low-income individuals and families in Northumberland, Union and Snyder counties. According to the Daily Item, Central Susquehanna Opportunities Inc. says with the 22 hundred dollar grant they can provide the needed products and help alleviate a financial burden for families as well as promote well-being and dignity among the most vulnerable. CSO’s broader mission is to empower individuals and families to achieve self-sufficiency.
CONVICTED RAPIST FACING NEW ASSAULT CHARGES
A man from Williamsport who was charged and plead guilty to raping a child and served prison time, is now accused of sexually assaulting a woman with whom he worked. According to North Central PA dot com, sexual assault, indecent assault without the consent of others, and simple assault charges against Shaun Maurice Cormier have been bound over for trial. After the alleged attack Cormier’s accuser was hospitalized at UPMC Williamsport with a sprained shoulder and several broken bones. He is being held at the Lycoming County Prison on $100,000 monetary bail.
WOMAN SCAMMED OUT OF 50 THOUSAND DOLLARS
A woman from Selinsgrove was scammed out of 50 thousand dollars after she was deceived into thinking her PayPal account was compromised and that she needed to pay cash to get it straightened out. According to the Daily Item, the woman received an email about the breach to her account and when she called the number for what she thought was the Federal Trade Commission, who advised her on how to withdraw money from several of her accounts. Police say an individual came to the victim’s house January 10th and collected 35 thousand dollars and three days later came back for 15 thousand dollars. PENN STATE PROFESSOR AWARDED NATIONAL ACCOLADES
An Evan Pugh University professor of Geosciences at Penn State was recently awarded the 2025 National Medals of Science and National Medals of Technology and Innovation during a ceremony at the White House on January 3rd. The award gives special recognition for outstanding contributions in the physical, biological, mathematical, engineering, or social and behavioral sciences. According to North Central PA dot com, Richard Alley was one of 23 individuals and two organizations were awarded the honor which was established by the U.S. Congress in 1959.
SPCA LEGACY FAMILY TO PROVIDE MATCHING FUNDS
Lycoming County pet owners will benefit from the generosity of a local family who are pledging to match community donations, dollar for dollar, up to $20,000 to restore funding for the SPCA’s low cost spay and neuter vouchers. According to North Central PA dot com, Pamela Jensen the daughter of the late Joyce Simpson Hershberger, a respected community leader, longstanding animal welfare advocate and former president of the SPCA in Lycoming County, says she hopes other animals lovers will step up for this worthy cause and help bridge the funding gap we’re facing this year.
