BARN FIRE IN HEPBURN TOWNSHIP

Fifty cattle were rescued from a four alarm barn fire by a regional patrolman who came upon the blaze Friday morning around 2:45 am.  According to the Sun Gazette, the large barn at 2525 Route 973 East in Hepburn Township contained hay and farm machinery and was completely destroyed. The fire was under control by 4:30am, with volunteers dousing hotspots throughout the day Saturday.  Property owner Kenneth Snyder also owns two properties nearby on Rose Valley Road where there were two barn fires eight days apart this past October and fires remain under investigation.

JUDGE VOTES AGAIN IN FAVOR OF LYCO CONTROLLER

Returning the control of the financial functions of Lycoming County to Lycoming County Controller Krista Rogers, not to the Lycoming County Commissioners, was the ruling handed down by visiting Potter County Senior Judge John B. Leete. As reported by PennLive, the commissioners are divided on their decision of whether to appeal. The dispute of responsibility for the general ledger, accounts payable and payroll has been an issue for over a year and this has been the third occurrence where Leete has ruled in the favor of Rogers.

WILLIAMSPORT POLICE GET GRANT FOR CRIME FIGHTING PROGRAMS

The City of Williamsport’s Bureau of Police was awarded $1.5 million from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency for programs designed to improve community safety and support local law enforcement. The program offers resources to address information technology, equipment, training, and recruitment and retention needs. The Bureau can now establish a Community Relations and Recruitment Specialist position to assist with public relations, diversity and recruitment efforts. The requested improvements will be implemented throughout 2023 and 2024.

FORMER PA REPRESENTATIVE DIES

Former Representative Garth Everett who served the 84th district passed away Saturday from unknown causes.  It was his 69th birthday.  According to North Central PA dot com, there was no cause of death listed for Everett, who was a seven-term state representative, and chose not to seek reelection in 2020.  Everett was an Air Force veteran, born in Montoursville and graduated from the High School there in 1972.  Everett was a graduate of the Pennsylvania University Dickenson School of Law.

POLICE INVESTIGATE DEATH OF 22 YEAR OLD WOMAN

Toxicology tests are pending over in the death of an unidentified 22-year-old woman who was found in her home around 9:30 a.m. January 15 on Summit Road in Washington Township, Snyder County. The state police are continuing the investigation and say details will be released as they become available.  There is no reason to believe the public is in danger related to the death of the Washington Township woman according to Selinsgrove State Police.

JURY SELECTION FOR WIFE WHO POISONED, DEFRAUDED HUSBAND

Jury selection is set to begin  today in Lewisburg for the case of accused murderer Myrtle Miller. Miller is the 77-year-old woman who allegedly poisoned and defrauded her 77 year old husband John Nichols in 2018. Police say in addition to fatally overdosing Nichols with her own prescription medication, she is also accused of stealing over $87,000 from his bank accounts and opening two loans against his life insurance. The trial is scheduled to begin an April 18th in Union County Court.

TOOL THEFT IN LINDEN

There was a theft of power tools from a workshop in Linden and State police in Montoursville are investigating.  According to North Central PA dot com, a burglary occurred between 5:30pm January 5th and 3pm on Janaury 6th at a property in Limestone Township along Little League Road. Police say the door was damaged when it was forced open and a power drill, chainsaw, socket set, skill saw, and 20 volt batteries collectively worth about14 hundred dollars were all reported missing.  If you have information call Pennsylvania state police 570-368-5700 (incident number PA23-26061).

ICE SCULPTING AT WINTER FEST NEXT MONTH IN WELLSBORO

There will be professional ice sculpting featured during a winter celebration in downtown Wellsboro in Tioga County on Saturday February 11th.  According to the Wellsboro Area Chamber of Commerce, ice sculptors will be working outside of four Main Street businesses between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Spectators are invited to watch the artist create the carvings.  There will be an introduction to cross country skiing for youth in the green at noon with tubing races at 2pm.  there will be music with Velveeta, the Penn State party band, and other events.  Find out more at wellsboropa dot com.
