WEATHER ALLOWED LITTLE LEAGUE CELEBRATION TO GO ON
The weather cleared just in time for the unveiling event of the newest installation of the Bases Loaded Statue in downtown Williamsport Sunday where Former President George W. Bush was an honored guest. The streets were closed and buses blocked the area surrounding Market and Third Streets. Joining the former president were other dignitaries including Rachel Robinson, the widow of Jackie Robinson, Baseball Commissioner Robert D. Manfred Jr. and Governor Tom Wolf. The designer of the sculptures, Matt Glenn, was also there. The likenesses of the statues looking on at Home plate are of Bush, Robinson and the late Cy Young. According to North Central PA dot com, Kobe Johnson of West End Little League was one of the youth asked to pull the cover off the statues for the reveal.
MAN SENTENCED FOR CONTRABAND
A Maryland man who attempted to throw contraband over the fence for inmates to retrieve at Allenwood Federal Correctional Center in 2016 and was caught, was sentenced last week to 18 months in prison. According to North Central PA dot com, Michael Dwight Smith snuck onto the prison grounds and had a backpack with cellphones, tobacco and synthetic marijuana. After Smith was arrested, he plead guilty in court in February of 2022.
NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY DRUG DEALER INCARCERATED
A 40 year old man from Paxinos was arrested and jailed for allegedly trying to sell drugs in Northumberland County. According to court records, John Kisner was charged with multiple offenses, including felony possession with intent, false identification, hindering apprehension, and other charges. Kisner’s bail was set at $35,000, at his preliminary hearing; but, was transported to the Northumberland County Jail, for failure to post bail.
NEW CONNECTOR FOR PINE CREEK RAIL TRAIL
Clinton County officials, along with DCNR have announced the unveiling of a new trail option for visitors in the PA Wilds. The 11.5 mile trail was dedicated earlier this week, at Falcon Bridge, and intersects the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, between Lock Haven and Jersey Shore. According to a press release, DCNR awarded $334,700 in funding for the project, that also includes other improvements to help make the trail ADA accessible. It will now connect with the 62 mile Pine Creek Rail Trail.
JUVENILE SHOT IN WILLIAMSPORT
A 16 year old is in custody after a Friday night shootout around 9:50pm in Williamsport. According to the Sun Gazette, police say the incident occurred when a man who was walking along West Edwin Street, engaged in conversation with two juveniles. One juvenile pulled out a firearm and fired a shot at the man who returned fire. Only one youth was injured by the gunshots and police found him injured behind a nearby house when he was transported to UPMC Williamsport. The man who was approached had a permit to carry a concealed weapon and was questioned by police, but was later released. The juvenile suspect was later arrested and placed into custody. Two of the bullets from the shootout struck a nearby home.
MAN JAILED FOR DEFENDING DAUGHTER
A man from Bloomsburg was charged with assault, after allegedly defending his daughter’s honor, at a park near Bloomsburg. According to North Central PA dot com, 42 year old Kasey Unger went to Columbia Park and punched another male and broke a tooth, after the victim allegedly made inappropriate comments to Unger’s 16 year old daughter. Unger awaits a September 12th preliminary hearing before Judge Richard Cashman.
RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE TO HOLD FUNDRAISIER
Plans are underway for a benefit to help the Ronald McDonald House in Danville. A masquerade ball will take place on September 16th, at the Bush House Estate in Muncy. The black tie event, will feature dancing, dinner under the stars, a silent auction and LIVE music, and more. This year’s event is sponsored by Pennsylvania Skill and tickets for the event, can be obtained by visiting rmhdanville.org.
LITTLE LEAGUERS MEET ORIOLES, RED SOX AT AIRPORT
There was a contingency of players and fans from the Great Lakes and Panama Teams at the Williamsport Regional Airport yesterday for when the Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox arrived in Montoursville for the Annual Little league Classic that was played Sunday at Historic Bowman Field in Williamsport. According to media outlets, there were cheers and applause from the little league players and families who gathered for autographs and some time to meet the players. Richie Martin of the Baltimore Orioles said it made him feel like a kid again to meet the players since he played little league when he was a kid but didn’t make it to Williamsport.
